Age-Related Dendritic Changes In Human Occipital And Prefrontal Cortices: A Quantitative Golgi Study, Kelly A. Courns, Bob Jacobs Jan 1996

Age-Related Dendritic Changes In Human Occipital And Prefrontal Cortices: A Quantitative Golgi Study, Kelly A. Courns, Bob Jacobs

Modern Psychological Studies

Qualitative (Scheibe!, 1992) and quantitative (Jacobs & Scheibel, 1993) research indicates a general decline in dendritic neuropil with increasing age. The present study extends previous human dendritic research by examining quantitatively age-related changes in 2 cortical areas: prefrontal cortex (area 10) and occipital cortex (area 18). Tissue blocks were obtained from the left hemisphere of 10 neurologically normal subjects, ranging in age from 23 to 81 years. Blocks were stained with a modified rapid Golgi technique. Supragranular pyramidal cells were quantified on a Neurolucida computer/microscope interface system (Microbrightfield, Inc.). Dendritic system complexity was determined by several dependent measures: total dendritic …

Effect Of Music Speed On Latency Of A Motor Task, Margaret M. Schneider Jan 1996

Effect Of Music Speed On Latency Of A Motor Task, Margaret M. Schneider

Modern Psychological Studies

To investigate the effect of music on the latency of a motor task, 36 participants were randomly assigned to three groups: the fast music group, the slow music group, and the no music group. Participants separated 200 colored beads by color while they listened to Preludium in E major played at 208 beats per minute, Air from orchestra suite No.3 played at 58 beats per minute, or music. The latency to complete the task was measured by recording time in units o f seconds. Participants in the slow music group took significantly more time to complete the motor task (M …

The Cyclical-Interaction Model: How Phobia Onset Disrupts Normal Cognitive Processing, Maryl Barton Jan 1996

The Cyclical-Interaction Model: How Phobia Onset Disrupts Normal Cognitive Processing, Maryl Barton

Modern Psychological Studies

A growing body o f cognitive research indicates that there is likely to be a cognitive basis for the onset, development, and maintenance of phobias. This possibility is examined relative to the potential for phobias to disrupt normal cognitive processing. Both the behavioral and cognitive approaches to the understanding and treatment o f phobias are explored. A hypothetical model is presented in which areas of cognitive disruption via phobia onset are explored, and a hypothetical case is presented to illustrate the new model. Implications of the new model for pursuing better phobia treatments, and the possible application of this model …

Mothers' Parenting Styles And Their Daughters' Eating Disorders, Tania D. Little, Ruth H. Lindow-Cook, Ramona E. Tolliver, Tamela L. Sise Jan 1996

Mothers' Parenting Styles And Their Daughters' Eating Disorders, Tania D. Little, Ruth H. Lindow-Cook, Ramona E. Tolliver, Tamela L. Sise

Modern Psychological Studies

Past research concerning the mother-daughter relationship and eating disorders provided compelling evidence that such a relationship exists. This study used Baumrind's three styles of parenting: authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive (Buri, 1991; Benokraitus, 1993). Sixty female college students, ages 18 to 22, were assessed using Buri's (1991) Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), and assigned to groups, either authoritative, authoritarian, or permissive, depending on their mothers' parent- ing styles. The Eating Disorder Questionnaire (EDQ; Little, Lindow-Cook, Tolliver, & Sise, 1996) was administered to all groups. Analysis using multiple regression, R = .373, (R2 = .139), and ANOVA found significance (F [2,60] = 4.607, …

Parents' Consideration Of The Preschool Child's Perspective Prior To Discipline, Cindy Fritchley-Griffith Jan 1996

Parents' Consideration Of The Preschool Child's Perspective Prior To Discipline, Cindy Fritchley-Griffith

Masters Theses

This study begins to develop a measure assessing parents' willingness to consider their preschool child's perspective, and the parents use of this information when considering appropriate disciplinary strategies. The literature on parenting includes this construct among the skills parents could use to increase the relationship and communication between themselves and their children; however, no research prior to this study shows empirical support for this construct. Thirty-two participants, all mothers of children between the ages to two and four, completed three measures: the Parent Behavior Checklist (PBC; Fox, 1994) and two measures developed for this study: vignettes (PCCV) and a direct …

A Study Of Inclusion, Kelly L. Cook Jan 1996

A Study Of Inclusion, Kelly L. Cook

Masters Theses

Attitudes of 79 educators toward inclusion were investigated in relation to specific job titles, years experience, and knowledge level. Knowledge level was determined by performance on an inclusion quiz. Questionnaires were completed by subjects to determine attitude. The results indicated that performance on the quiz was related to responses on some questions. Those with more knowledge appeared to be in favor of inclusion. This is consistent with past studies. Attitudes were similar across educational disciplines. Years of experience may have some impact on attitude if coupled with other variables. Further investigation of this topic is warranted as it continues to …

Subliminal Advertising: The Commercial Appropriation Of The Unconscious, Brian D. Williams

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Subliminal advertising refers to the use of subliminal techniques by mass media and what these media messages are doing to society. A secret technology has existed and been in widespread use for decades which modifies consumer's behavior invisibly, channels basic value systems, and manages to drive much bigger segments of the population into certain pathological behaviors.
