Passage Recall: Schema Change And Cognitive Flexibility, Paula T. Hertel, M. Codsen, P. J. Johnson Jan 1980

Passage Recall: Schema Change And Cognitive Flexibility, Paula T. Hertel, M. Codsen, P. J. Johnson

Psychology Faculty Research

Investigated the effects of subsequent related information and individual differences in cognitive flexibility on prose recall. 70 undergraduates read a passage and then were given either consistent or contradictory incidental information. Errors in cued recall, reflecting the nature of the subsequent information, were more frequently produced after a 3-wk delay than after 2 days. These results were consistent with R. J. Spiro's (1975) findings with free recall. In addition, 3-wk Ss were more confident about correct recall than errors, indicating that errors resulted, in part, from retrieval processes. The negative relationship of spontaneous flexibility and the positive relationship of adaptive …

The Development And Validation Of A Sentence-Completion Method: A Semi-Structured Projective Technique Designed For Personality Study, Esdon N. Bacchus Jan 1980

The Development And Validation Of A Sentence-Completion Method: A Semi-Structured Projective Technique Designed For Personality Study, Esdon N. Bacchus

Dissertations

Problem. There are very few objective instruments available for use in the psychological diagnosis of emotional impairment at the elementary-school level. The determination of emotional impairment has often been based on clinical judgment and subjectivity. In addition, psychological instruments have been attacked from the standpoint of reliability and validity. Major concerns relate to the seriousness of misclassification and the limited success-rate of rehabilitation efforts. The sentence-completion method is popularly used by clinicians. However, the available incomplete-sentence blanks used at the elementary-school level rely almost entirely on face validity. Public Legislation 94-142 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 specifically require that …

Autonomic Responses Of Normals And Depressives To Stress Inducing Stimuli, Dennis Donat Jan 1980

Autonomic Responses Of Normals And Depressives To Stress Inducing Stimuli, Dennis Donat

Theses and Dissertations

A group of depressed (N=10) and a group of normal (N=10) were presented a series of stressor stimuli to assess several parameters of their physiological responses to these stimuli. The results indicated that the groups did not differ in their relative tendency to show maximal response specificity (consistently responding to stress with a maximum response in the same channel) or pattern stereotypy (the tendency to respond consistently in all physiological channels relative to each other). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), of the levels of the physiological channels under conditions of rest, anticipation, and stress revealed a significant group effect. …

Androgyny And Attribution: Effects Of Sex Role Adoption, Sex-Linkage Of Task, And Outcome On Causal Attributions For Success And Failure, Vally M. Sharpe Jan 1980

Androgyny And Attribution: Effects Of Sex Role Adoption, Sex-Linkage Of Task, And Outcome On Causal Attributions For Success And Failure, Vally M. Sharpe

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Thirty androgynous females, 30 androgynous males, 30 feminine females, and 30 masculine males participated at either a masculine-linked task (wiring a telephone), a feminine-linked task (doing needlepoint), or a neutral task (doing anagrams). Half of the subjects were given success feedback; half were given failure feedback. Each subject, after receiving feedback, completed a post-task questionnaire from which causal attribution ratings for four factors: ability, effort, task difficulty, and luck, were obtained. Scores were analyzed by means of 4x3x2 multivariate analyses of variance."Success" subjects attributed success to ability (F=18.007, df=1/96, p

Generalization Of Learned Helplessness : A Test Of The Attribution Theory Models, Jean Griffin Jan 1980

Generalization Of Learned Helplessness : A Test Of The Attribution Theory Models, Jean Griffin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between global/specific and stable/unstable dimensions of attributions and the generalization of helplessness across tasks and situations. Four groups of subjects were given instructions suggesting that their performance on a Venn diagram task could be attributed to (a) global or specific and (b) staple or unstable factors. Then, during performance of this task, these subjects were given noncontingent correctness feedback on their responses. A control group given the same task received no attribution instructions or feedback on their performance. Generalization of helplessness was assessed by examining the magnitude of performance deficits displayed on an anagram task …

Rules Of Order: Or So To Speak, Arthur Emanuel Blank Jan 1980

Rules Of Order: Or So To Speak, Arthur Emanuel Blank

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

How members of a social unit acquire their shared knowledge about the social world was approached in Sherif's (1935, 1936) writings on norm formation and in the phenomenological descriptions of Schutz (1971, 1973) and Berger and Luckmann (1967). Both traditions presume that shared understandings originate in face-to-face encounters, but they diverge in that the phenomenologists argue that talk, and the construction of "typifications," plays a prominent role in the acquisition of shared knowledge. For the phenomenologists, a "typification" enables members to categorize behavior as a known event and permits individuals to consider disparate behaviors as belonging to the same class …

Adjustment To Psycho-Social Stress, John William Carnes Dec 1979

Adjustment To Psycho-Social Stress, John William Carnes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between adjustment to life-event stressors and selected psycho-social variables. Recent research has consistently identified an etiological link between stressful life-events and physical and/or emotional disorders. It has often been noted, however, that exposure to seemingly identical stressors results in varying levels of adjustment among individuals. Lazarus (1966, 1967, 1971, 1974) has proposed that variations in stress responses are attributable to differences relative to the implicated individual's appraised threat from the stressor. Based on this conceptualization, adjustment to stressful life-events was selected as the dependent variable for the study. Five independent …

The Traditional Sex-Stereotype Of A Job As A Moderator Variable For The Directionality Of Sex Biases In Performance Evaluation, Bernard Bena Dec 1979

The Traditional Sex-Stereotype Of A Job As A Moderator Variable For The Directionality Of Sex Biases In Performance Evaluation, Bernard Bena

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Accurate and objective performance appraisals are absolutely necessary due to their utility in important personnel decisions such as promotion, demotion and training. This study examines the contaminating effects of sex bias on performance evaluations and it's relationship to the sex-stereotype of the job and levels of performance. Unlike previous studies, this study not only examines these effects at the extremes of performance, but at average levels as well. Also, unlike previous studies, the subjects empirically determined the sex-typed nature of the jobs and the levels of performance within those jobs rather than the experimenter having made a priori decisions. Hypothetical …
