All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study was conducted to investigate the effects of an introduction to psychology course on college students' superstitions and beliefs which have some scientific sanction. The test used was selected from H. K. Nixon's 1925 study on answers to psychological questions and considers 30 statements to be marked true or false.
Subjects used for this study were 100 men and 100 women students in a beginning psychology course at Utah State University, Logan, Utah. The first administration of the questionnaire was given during the first week of the class with a follow-up administration given during the final week of class. …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between The Bender-Gestalt, Draw-A-Man, And Wechsler Preschool And Primary Scale Of Intelligence, G. Edward Allen
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between The Bender-Gestalt, Draw-A-Man, And Wechsler Preschool And Primary Scale Of Intelligence, G. Edward Allen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study investigated the relationship between the Bender-Gestalt, Draw-a-Man, and the Wexler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. Twenty-two children enrolled in the Logan, Utah Head-Start Program comprised the sample. Product-moment correlations indicated a significant relationship between these instruments.
The following tentative conclusions were drawn:
-
The Wexler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence bears a relationship to the Draw-a-Man and Bender-Gestalt tests similar to that between the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and these instruments.
-
The Bender-Gestalt test, using the Koppitz scoring system, and the Draw-a-Man test can serve a similar checking function with the Wexler Preschool and Primary Scale …
The Influence Of Color And/Or Movement Added To Thematic Apperception Test To Evoke Need Achievement, Justin Fred Hurst
The Influence Of Color And/Or Movement Added To Thematic Apperception Test To Evoke Need Achievement, Justin Fred Hurst
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study utilized the theories of David C. McClelland and associates regarding affective arousal, concept of cues arousing motives, and neutral testing procedures. The problem was to study the influence of color and/ or movement, as cues added to the McClelland four-picture Thematic Apperception Test, to evoke need achievement responses to determine whether or not the added stimuli of color and/or movement might evoke increased need achievement responses.
Four treatment variations of the test were made: Treatment A, consisted of the standard McClelland test, in black and white pictures. This treatment served as the control. Treatment B used the black …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It is possible to determine the degree of intelligence of an individual by use of the M (human movement) response of the Group Rorschach Blank arranged by M. R. Harrower.
Is there a significant difference between the correlation of summed human movement Rorschach scores and intelligence test scores earned in a sixth grade elementary school population.
The writer is attempting to determine further whether or not it is possible to predict the intelligence of an individual by use of the M (human movement) response of the Group Rorschach Blank.

Concept Identification As A Function Of Three Semantic Dimensions, Richard Eugene Edwards
Concept Identification As A Function Of Three Semantic Dimensions, Richard Eugene Edwards
All Master's Theses
It is the purpose of the present study to determine the differential effects of the three primary semantic dimensions on the ability of Ss to solve a concept identification problem. It was hypothesized that the performance level, as measured by a criterion of learning ten successive responses containing no more than one error, time to completion, and the total number of errors, will be higher for Ss working on the evaluative dimension than for Ss working on the potency or activity dimensions. Two additional hypotheses were formulated in an attempt to answer the following questions: 1) Is the ability to …
Verbal Conditioning With Vicarious Reinforcement As Related To Peer Attitudes In Grade-School Children, Margaret Mccutcheon Lauterbach
Verbal Conditioning With Vicarious Reinforcement As Related To Peer Attitudes In Grade-School Children, Margaret Mccutcheon Lauterbach
All Master's Theses
The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of peer attitudes toward performers in a verbal conditioning experiment using vicarious reinforcement, and to determine whether birth order or need for social approval had any effect on conditioning. Fifth grade and sixth grade students served as subjects, with performers (those to be directly reinforced) from the same grades as the observers.
Play Preparation For The Adeno-Tonsillectomy Patient, Carol Brown, Harriet Hecker
Play Preparation For The Adeno-Tonsillectomy Patient, Carol Brown, Harriet Hecker
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Hospitalization and surgery have been recognized as being psychologically stressful for the majority of children. Hospital personnel have attempted to reduce some of the unnecessary psychological stress incurred by children by the use of many different methods. This study attempted to evaluate the use of preoperative play preparation sessions for minimizing this stress. The method was experimental with one variable. The subjects were forty-one children aged three and one-half to seven and one-half who had adeno-tonsillectomies. Twenty-one children comprising Group E were involved in a play session by the researchers. Twenty children were not prepared in this way. The tools …

Timidity, Emotionality, And Activity In Rats Deprived Of Grooming, Josiah B. Henneberger
Timidity, Emotionality, And Activity In Rats Deprived Of Grooming, Josiah B. Henneberger
Master's Theses
The purpose of this current study was to investigate the effect of restriction of grooming, by means of collars, on activity, emotionality, and timidity. On the basis of the common occurrence of grooming when under stress some relationship between licking and emotionality was assumed to exist by the author. it was therefore expected that differences would be found among the treatment group.
The current study made use of a three factor design. One factor was the treatment factor, another factor was the replications factor, and the third was the days factor. The days factor has repeated measures and the replications …

An Experimental Analysis Of Superstitious Behavior In College Males, Nancy Alice Metzler
An Experimental Analysis Of Superstitious Behavior In College Males, Nancy Alice Metzler
All Master's Theses
The possibility that superstitious responses would occur when aversive stimulation was randomly presented was investigated. There were three groups of 20 male introductory psychology students each. The Shock Group (SG) was given 45 unavoidable shocks. The Reinforcement Shock Group {RSG) was given 100 positive reinforcements and then 45 unavoidable shocks. The Reinforcement Punishment Group received 100 positive reinforcements and then 45 response contingent shocks and served to test the effectiveness of the shock as a punishing stimulus. Superstitious responses seemed to occur, but Ss of SG showed response patterns typical of punishment, while Ss of RSG showed increases in rates …

The Value Of Mixed Fixed-Interval Schedules With And Without Informative Stimuli, Phillip B. Wootton
The Value Of Mixed Fixed-Interval Schedules With And Without Informative Stimuli, Phillip B. Wootton
Psychology ETDs
A number of observing response experiments indicate animals prefer informative over noninformative response alternatives. This preference is exhibited even though there is no objective difference in reward conditions to favor one alternative over the other. In the present experiment, an equivalent mixture of short and long fixed-interval schedules was programmed in informative and noninformative response alternatives. The present approach sought to determine whether preference for the informative alternative could be rationalized from an estimation of the relative values of the fixed-interval schedules and mixtures. In conjunction with this purpose, preferences were evaluated over a broad range of short and long …
Hippocampal Eeg Correlates Of Behavior, Thomas Leroy Bennett Jr.
Hippocampal Eeg Correlates Of Behavior, Thomas Leroy Bennett Jr.
Psychology ETDs
Implications that the hippocampus plays a major role in mediating behavior have been described by animal lesion and human clinical studies. The exact function of this structure is, however, in dispute. This is particularly true with regard to orienting, learning and decision making as reflected by electrical activity (theta) recorded from this structure. Contrary evidence concerning these functions has been obtained by Grastyán, Adey and their associates. In the present research, three task variables which may have accounted for their different findings were examined. These methodological variations included the modality of the stimuli presented to the animal, the presence of …
Interest As A Factor In Vocational Choice, Leland J. Smith
Interest As A Factor In Vocational Choice, Leland J. Smith
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
As the complexities of modern life increase, greater caution has to be exercised in the selection of an appropriate vocational choice. Norris, Zeran and Hatch (1960, p. 5) state, "The dramatic changes which have taken place in the world during the past twenty-five years have created new demands on the training programs which furnish the skilled leaders in all vocational pursuits." The foregoing statement certainly points out the vocational implications of our changing society. Mortensen and Schmuller (1951, p. 199) report, "The entire area of interests is today receiving added emphasis." The study of interest continues to occupy an important …
Learning Theory As Applied To The Counseling Process, Melvin H. Larsen
Learning Theory As Applied To The Counseling Process, Melvin H. Larsen
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The literature contains much about learning. But, what do we mean by learning?
Learning is the process by which an activity originates or is changed through reacting to an encountered situation, provided that the characteristics of the change in activity cannot be explained on the basis of native response tendencies, maturation, or temporary states of the organism (e.g., fatigue, drugs, etc.). (Hilgard, 1966, p. 2)
Effective counseling requires that the client learn. Even though client learning is essential to effective counseling, relatively little has been done to relate learning theory to the counseling process. Significant work in this direction has …
