Are Pschological Principles Useful?(A Guid To The Study Of Human Learning), David R. Stone Nov 1969

Are Pschological Principles Useful?(A Guid To The Study Of Human Learning), David R. Stone

Faculty Honor Lectures

To some extent, each person is his own doctor, his own economist, his own historian, his own counselor, his own psychologist, and his own teacher.

It is said that a man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client. Can the same be said of a man's other roles? At least for learning (which professionally intersects education and psychology) any person may have the goal of helping himself to appreciate and evaluate the role of the learning professional.

A knowledge explosion has taken place in the area of learning, as in the many fields of science in …

A Methodological Approach To Shifts In Drive Simuli., Peggy A. Keilman Oct 1969

A Methodological Approach To Shifts In Drive Simuli., Peggy A. Keilman

Psychology ETDs

A study employing different and equal strengths of the hunger and thirst drive stimuli was conducted in an 8-ft. modified T-maze in an attempt to provide a somewhat more methodologically sound approach to the experimental analysis of the construct drive. The 11 rats used in the experiment underwent a pretraining phase that used a titration procedure to equate the strength of hunger and thirst for each animal by varying the conditions rather than the schedules of feeding and -watering the animals. The only restriction was that each animal's daily intake must sum to 24 (e.g., 13 g. food and 11 …

Conditioned Helplessness And Human Escape Behavior, Robert E. Gabbard Jr. Aug 1969

Conditioned Helplessness And Human Escape Behavior, Robert E. Gabbard Jr.

All Master's Theses

The present study was undertaken to determine, first, whether or not "helplessness" can be conditioned in human subjects, and, secondly, the amount of behavioral variability that can be accounted for in terms of locus of control as measured by Rotter's Internal-External control scale (I-E scale).

Semantic Differential Relationships As A Determinant Of Clustering, Burr R. Beckwith Aug 1969

Semantic Differential Relationships As A Determinant Of Clustering, Burr R. Beckwith

All Master's Theses

In the past, clustering research has focused primarily on the effect of pre-experimental associations and/or conceptual relationships on clustering in free recall. The present study marks a departure from this trend in that it was designed to determine under what conditions SD relationships among task-items would mediate clustering.

An Analysis Of Incentive And Behavioral Contrast, Amado M. Padilla May 1969

An Analysis Of Incentive And Behavioral Contrast, Amado M. Padilla

Psychology ETDs

In 1942 Crespi reported the results of an experiment in which rats were given runway training with one magnitude of reward and then shifted to another magnitude of reward. He found that animals shifted from a small to large reward showed an abrupt increase in performance, while Ss shifted from a large to small reward showed an immediate decrease in running speed. These changes in performance were found to exceed the performance levels expected from the absolute postshift magnitude of reinforcement. Crespi called these effects "elation" and "depression," respectively. Later, Zeaman (1949) conducted an experiment which closely paralleled Crespi's and …

Effects Of Gold Compounds On Rat Behavior, Jonas Kaye May 1969

Effects Of Gold Compounds On Rat Behavior, Jonas Kaye

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Seven rats were trained on Fixed Ratio 20 and two on Fixed Ratio 12 Escape Schedules until a stable baseline was established. Five of the subjects were administered gold thioglucose, three received gold thiomalate, and one was injected with gold, gold thioglucose, and gold thiomalate, allowing for an intrasubject comparison. Colloidal gold appeared to suppress response rate for one or two sessions, while gold thioglucose and gold thiomalate suppressed normal response rates from several to a number of sessions. This response rate suppression was often followed by gradual recovery, although in several subjects recovery of response rate could not be …

Retention Of Conservation Acquired By Instructional Methods, Eight Months After Termination Of Instruction, Wenden W. Waite May 1969

Retention Of Conservation Acquired By Instructional Methods, Eight Months After Termination Of Instruction, Wenden W. Waite

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study attempted to determine if subjects that had been instructed in the principle of conservation, maintained conservation after termination of instructions. Using subjects from kindergarten to third grade that had received instructions by use of both concrete example and mental imagery methods. Those S's that received instructions were compared with S's that had received no instructions. A test of conservation was administered to a total of 96 S's approximately eight months after termination of instructions to determine if the scores received on a test of those students that had received instructions exceeded those S's that had not received instructions. …

A Study Of The Difference In Short-Term Memory Between Seventh Grade Students Rated High And Low In The Ability To Acquire Sport Skills, Vera Jeppesen Watkins May 1969

A Study Of The Difference In Short-Term Memory Between Seventh Grade Students Rated High And Low In The Ability To Acquire Sport Skills, Vera Jeppesen Watkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the possibility that the short-term memory factor may be one of the variables involved in the learning of motor skills.

The subjects of the study were all of the seventh grade gym students at Logan Junior High School who were rated by their teachers as being in the upper or lower one-fourth of their class in respect to their abilities in sport skills. After a short-term memory (STM) test developed by the researcher was administered to this group, their scores were compared to determine whether there was a significant difference between the upper and lower one-fourth.

Spatial Reasoning As Related To Solving "Story Type" Problems, James R. Holder May 1969

Spatial Reasoning As Related To Solving "Story Type" Problems, James R. Holder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this study it was hypothesized that the ability to mentally solve II story type" problems, those presented in the form of sentences, is significantly related to one's spatial reasoning ability and that a weakness in this ability, when tested by the "story type" problems, could be compensated for by training in and utilization of overt "paper and pencil" manipulations.

To test the hypothesis, three measures were used. These were the DAT Verbal Reasoning test--used to control the factor of verbal reasoning, the DAT Space Relations test--used to measure spatial reasoning ability, and two forms of a test composed of …

A Psychological Investigation Of Seven Hermaphroditic Children, Peter Lewis Kranz May 1969

A Psychological Investigation Of Seven Hermaphroditic Children, Peter Lewis Kranz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An in-depth personality and intellectual evaluation of a group of hermaphroditic children residing in the state of Oklahoma was undertaken in this study. The following techniques were utilized in order to extensively study the impact of this anomaly on the families of these children: psychological tests, parental interviews by a social worker, and diagnostic play interviews conducted by the investigator. It was the purpose of this study to examine the psychological impact of sexual ambiguity on the child and his parents.

There were no significant differences between the two groups on any of the tests given. This may be attributed …
