Eldad And Medad’S Effusive And Momentous Worlds: A Diachronic View, David J. Zucker Jan 2026

Eldad And Medad’S Effusive And Momentous Worlds: A Diachronic View, David J. Zucker

The Asbury Journal

In Numbers 11, Eldad and Medad, two of the seventy chosen elders of the people of Israel remain in camp, while their counterparts join Moses at the Tent of Meeting. At the Tent, God takes some of the divine spirit that is on Moses and puts it on the elders, who then speak in ecstasy (others: prophesy, have a vision). Suddenly and simultaneously Eldad and Medad also speak in ecstasy (others: prophesy, have a vision). This article addresses how the text has been received and interpreted in the postbiblical world, largely in rabbinic writings, but also in religiously based homilies …

Hunters Of Men: A Tribal Reading Of The Missiological Motif In Luke 5:1-11, Themshang Horam Jan 2026

Hunters Of Men: A Tribal Reading Of The Missiological Motif In Luke 5:1-11, Themshang Horam

The Asbury Journal

This article presents an intercultural and contextual reading of Luke 5:1–11 from the perspective of the Naga tribes of Northeast India, proposing a reinterpretation of the traditional “fishers of men” motif as “hunters of men.” Grounded in the author’s cultural context—where, owing to the absence of large water bodies, fishing serves as a secondary means of subsistence while hunting remains central to social and spiritual life— this study contends that biblical metaphors risk losing their theological depth and communicative efficacy when removed from the ecological and cultural frameworks of the receiving community. Through exegetical analysis and intercultural hermeneutics, the paper …

The Flow Of Ink: A Journey Through Calligraphy, Culture, And The Self, Reng Zhao Jan 2026

The Flow Of Ink: A Journey Through Calligraphy, Culture, And The Self, Reng Zhao

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The Flow of Ink: A Journey Through Calligraphy, Culture, and the Self, a non-fiction narrative that combines memoir and the world of Chinese calligraphy, focuses on my experiences learning the art starting at age seven. The combination of personal reflection and historical research, enhanced by ethnographic fieldwork, opens the way to one of China’s most culturally significant traditions, not merely as an artistic practice but also as a fundamental vessel of historical legacy. Most centrally, it traces my educational and personal evolution over eight years of practice that have fostered my growth and cultivated a deep sense of …

Toil And Quietus, Dylan Mitchell Jan 2026

Toil And Quietus, Dylan Mitchell

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The United States of America is haunted by its past. Be it the institution of slavery, the lack of gender equality, or the violent annexation of Native land, its ghosts are plentiful and undeniable. Still, though, questions of whether to venerate our nation’s history or condemn it pervade society. Now, then, is the time for the gothic.

For all of its existence, the gothic has served to shed light on the past, often casting on its dusty visage an ambivalence that weighs its good with its bad. Nowhere is this land more fertile than with American history, which is simultaneously …

The State Of Funding For Curriculum Materials Centers And Collections, Caitlin Stewart, Jenelle Johnson Jan 2026

The State Of Funding For Curriculum Materials Centers And Collections, Caitlin Stewart, Jenelle Johnson

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, researchers analyzed whether there was a correlation between education student enrollment and curriculum materials center/collection (CMC) budget across eighty universities in the United States. Findings indicate that there is a positive correlation between those variables, although the relationship is weak. Universities with large education programs tend to have better-funded CMCs; however, variability across institutions is still significant. Findings suggest that many university CMCs may be comparatively underfunded based on student enrollment in education and historical trends.

Effect Of Increasing Potency Of Steroidal Implants In Beef Steers At Weaning From Dry-Lot To Finish, Weston Joseph Peschel Jan 2026

Effect Of Increasing Potency Of Steroidal Implants In Beef Steers At Weaning From Dry-Lot To Finish, Weston Joseph Peschel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The receiving phase is a stressful transition period in beef production. Newly weaned cattle are offered low-energy, high-forage diets promoting lean tissue and bone development prior to the finishing phase. Steroidal implants containing trenbolone acetate (TBA) and estradiol benzoate (EB) enhance lean gain. Aggressive early implant exposure has been shown to negatively impact intramuscular fat deposition. This two-part study evaluated the initial and carryover effects of increasing doses of combined TBA and EB weaning implants on growth performance, serum metabolites, and carcass traits. In Exp. 1, newly weaned Charolais × Red Angus crossbred beef steers [n = 240 initially; body …

Effect Of Corn Processing Methods On Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics, And Gastrointestinal Health In Ruminants Fed Finishing Diets, Reanna Rae Byrnes-Schoen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this work was to evaluate different feed processing techniques and their impacts on growth performance, carcass traits, and gastrointestinal health in ruminant animals fed in confinement during the finishing phase. Two studies were conducted. The first study evaluated the effect of kernel processing high moisture ear corn (HMEC) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of finishing beef steers. The second study used feeder lambs to evaluate the effect of steam-flaking corn in a finishing diet on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) health. The results from the first study using steers demonstrated that feeding kernel …

Strip-Till Adoption For Soybean Production In Eastern South Dakota: Plant Development, Seed Quality, And Economic Analysis, Nicolas Passone Jan 2026

Strip-Till Adoption For Soybean Production In Eastern South Dakota: Plant Development, Seed Quality, And Economic Analysis, Nicolas Passone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soybean production in eastern South Dakota faces a persistent challenge: cool, wet spring conditions combined with heavy soils limit the adoption of conservation tillage despite its soil health and environmental benefits. Strip-tillage has been proposed as a middle-ground practice capable of providing conservation benefits while maintaining the seedbed quality advantages of conventional tillage. However, its performance in soybean production in South Dakota had not been evaluated prior to this work. This research examined the effects of tillage systems and fertilizer placement-timing, fertilizer rate, and seeding rate on soybean plant development, nutrient uptake, seed yield, chemical composition, and partial net economic …

Impacts Of Management Practices And Soil Properties On Free-Living Nitrogen Fixation In Eastern South Dakota, Laura Galvan Nuevo Jan 2026

Impacts Of Management Practices And Soil Properties On Free-Living Nitrogen Fixation In Eastern South Dakota, Laura Galvan Nuevo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Free-living nitrogen (N) fixation (FLNF) may represent a sustainable pathway to supplement crop N demand in agroecosystems, yet edaphic and management factors regulating this process under field conditions remain poorly understood in the Northern Great Plains. Using 15N2 direct method to quantify potential FLNF (pFLNF) and baseline FLNF (bFLNF), this thesis investigates how crop rotations (2-, 3-, and 4-year systems), tillage management (conventional vs. no-till), cover cropping, and soil properties affect the potential of free-living diazotrophs to supply N via FLNF in a long-term no-till corn-based system in Southeastern South Dakota. A two-year field study evaluated pFLNF across four growing …

Advancing Cns Tumor Management: Novel Modalities In Surgery, Radiation, And Chemotherapy, Armin David Tavakkoli Jan 2026

Advancing Cns Tumor Management: Novel Modalities In Surgery, Radiation, And Chemotherapy, Armin David Tavakkoli

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Most tumors affecting the brain and spine are managed through a combination of surgical resection, radiation, and chemotherapy; however, operative morbidity from invasive surgery, the narrow therapeutic window of conventional radiotherapy, and poor blood-brain barrier penetration of systemic agents are critical barriers that hinder long term tumor control. This thesis presents three complementary strategies to advance brain and spine tumor therapy. First, we investigate laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) in the treatment of spinal tumors with metastatic epidural spinal cord compression, replacing “separation surgery” with a minimally invasive, image-guided approach that maximizes tumor ablation while preserving neurologic function. Second, we …

The Influence, Dependency, And Targeting Of Fatty Acid Uptake In Er+ Breast Cancer, Abigail E. Goen Jan 2026

The Influence, Dependency, And Targeting Of Fatty Acid Uptake In Er+ Breast Cancer, Abigail E. Goen

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Estrogen Receptor-positive/ Human Epidermal Growth Factor 2-negative, breast cancer (ER+/HER2- BC) is the most prevalent subtype of BC, impacting millions of individuals. Although early screening and treatment with endocrine therapy has greatly enhanced survival, this subtype sustains a steady increase of risk for recurrent disease for decades after diagnosis, indicating the persistence of residual cancer cells that are capable of maintaining dormancy for >20 years prior to metastatic outgrowth. Dormant cells reprogram metabolic pathways which can be profoundly influenced by the tumor microenvironment in promoting quiescence or proliferation. Fatty acid oxidation dependency has been noted as a hallmark of drug …

Colorectal Cancers With Distinct Metastatic Potential Trigger Divergent Early T Cell Responses, Marwa Ahmed Saad Jan 2026

Colorectal Cancers With Distinct Metastatic Potential Trigger Divergent Early T Cell Responses, Marwa Ahmed Saad

Student Theses and Dissertations

The intestinal mucosa harbors the largest immune compartment in the mammalianbody, where resident and recruited immune cells must maintain tolerance to commensal and dietary antigens while preserving their ability to mount effective responses against pathogens and malignant transformation. Uncontrolled epithelial proliferation leads to colorectal cancer (CRC), the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. More than 85% of human CRC cases arise from accumulating sporadic or hereditary mutations in the tumor suppressor genes Apc, Tp53, Smad4, and the oncogene Kras. Although immune checkpoint blockade has transformed the treatment of certain solid tumors, most CRCs, particularly those with a proficient mismatch …

Investigating Primary Motor Cortex Involvement In Mouse Vocal Communication, Elena N. Duryea Waidmann Jan 2026

Investigating Primary Motor Cortex Involvement In Mouse Vocal Communication, Elena N. Duryea Waidmann

Student Theses and Dissertations

Vocal communication is used to transmit a range of information to other individuals. While many vocalizations are innate, some species can learn to change their vocal output. This is termed vocal-learning, and it is a rare trait and a necessary building block for human spoken language and songbird song. Comparative work in humans and songbirds suggests that convergent genetic and neural specializations may drive these learned vocal behaviors. Two key features of these advanced vocal learners are: i) specialized primary motor regions in the forebrain with activity tied to vocalization; and ii) dense monosynaptic projections from the primary motor cortex …

Noncanonical Roles Of Hepatitis B Virus Precore Rna In Reverse, Mengyin Zhang Jan 2026

Noncanonical Roles Of Hepatitis B Virus Precore Rna In Reverse, Mengyin Zhang

Student Theses and Dissertations

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a partially double-stranded DNA virus that replicates through reverse transcription. Transcription from the HBV core promoter generates two genome-length RNAs: pregenomic RNA (pgRNA) and precore RNA (pcRNA). pcRNA contains the entire pgRNA sequence plus an additional 32 nucleotides at its 5’ end that include the precore start codon, enabling translation of the precore protein, the precursor of the secreted HBV e antigen (HBeAg). Whereas pgRNA is translated to produce core and polymerase and serves as the template for reverse transcription by cis-acting HBV polymerase, pcRNA has long been considered unable to support HBV DNA synthesis. …

Accountability For Lawyers And Lawyer-Bashers: Reflections On Wendel's Canceling Lawyers, David Luban Jan 2026

Accountability For Lawyers And Lawyer-Bashers: Reflections On Wendel's Canceling Lawyers, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article is part of a symposium on W. Bradley Wendel’s Canceling Lawyers: Case Studies of Accountability, Toleration, and Regret. I agree with Wendel’s two fundamental claims: first, and contrary to the reigning conception, lawyers can be held accountable for choosing to represent a particular client (assuming they have a choice), and therefore that they cannot use their professional role as a “magic shield or force field” (Wendel’s term) to deflect all criticism. Second, however, there is also an ethics of blaming, and critics who blame lawyers irresponsibly can themselves be blamed. One of Wendel’s examples is lawyers who …

Removal And Monitoring Of Ammophila Arenaria In A Previously Restored Foredune Site In Humboldt Coastal Nature Center, Lucas Benjamin Griffin, Haylee Lynn Kimball, Maya Contreras, Ava Christenson

Environmental Science & Management Senior Capstones

Coastal dunes are important ecosystems that provide vital habitat for rare and endangered species as well as vital ecosystem services. However, since the late nineteenth century, coastal dune ecosystems have been invaded and altered by Ammophila arenaria, which is a beach grass species native to Europe. The dunes within the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center are one such example of this. This property is currently managed by the non-profit organization Friends of the Dunes, which has been working to restore the dunes' ecology and topography. Our project focuses on the monitoring and maintenance of a 2021 restoration project within a 17,794 …

Monitoring, Oversight, And Learning In Medical Ai, W. Nicholson Price Ii Jan 2026

Monitoring, Oversight, And Learning In Medical Ai, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Articles

When medical AI errs, it often goes unnoticed. If there’s a specific patient injury, and the link to AI is obvious, that problem might be reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but not always. And many other types of problems, like worse performance on specific groups or ineffective integration into health system workflows, simply don’t fall within the contours of regularized reporting. Even if they are noticed by the health system—far from a given—there’s no obvious way to share that information more broadly. Against this backdrop, there are justified calls for better oversight and reporting. But there’s the …

The Basis Of The Labor Exemption Reconsidered, Sanjukta Paul Jan 2026

The Basis Of The Labor Exemption Reconsidered, Sanjukta Paul

Articles

Broadly speaking, this symposium queries the question of expanding some actors’ coordination rights under antitrust law as a way of effectuating legal goals relating to “power relations.” I commend the organizers of the symposium for opening this conversation, for asking about the use of “collective bargaining” beyond the traditional labor domain, and for taking on the question in a creative way. These broader questions are essential, and yet my own article will (paradoxically, perhaps) try to contribute to this effort by going back to the core domain of the labor exemption itself—where, it turns

Cold Comfort: Japan’S “Comfort Women” Litigation Under Transnational Law, Timothy Webster Jan 2026

Cold Comfort: Japan’S “Comfort Women” Litigation Under Transnational Law, Timothy Webster

Faculty Scholarship

Transnational human rights litigation has emerged as a powerful tool to remediate state and corporate abuses. Courts, however, rarely evince the same enthusiasm for these lawsuits as practitioners, scholars, and activists. For the past thirty-five years, “comfort women,” or survivors of wartime sexual exploitation, have used transnational litigation to seek redress from the Japanese government. Yet they have lost nearly all their cases. This Article uses ten “comfort women” lawsuits from Japan to test the limits of transnational human rights litigation. While judges rarely found for the comfort women, their verdicts nonetheless advanced the redress issue by showing the illegality …

This survey presents a comprehensive analysis of recent advances in FEG, organized into six key paradigms: speech-driven expression generation, facial reaction generation, face video generation, facial animation, avatar-based generation, and text-driven expression generation. We review a wide range of model architectures, including VQ-VAEs, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), 3D Morphable Models (3DMMs), Transformers, and diffusion-based approaches, and compare their performance using commonly adopted evaluation metrics such as Fréchet Distance (FD), Peak …

Evaluation Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Thermal Tolerance And Projected Climate Change Effects On Headwater Brook Trout Population Persistence, Cory Bauerlien Jan 2026

Evaluation Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Thermal Tolerance And Projected Climate Change Effects On Headwater Brook Trout Population Persistence, Cory Bauerlien

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Climate change has been identified as one of the greatest threats to global biota in recorded human history. Consequences are expected to be more pronounced in ectotherms because most of their physiology is controlled by external temperature conditions. Predicting how ectotherms may respond to increasing global temperatures necessitates information about thermal limits of thermal sensitive species and how increasing temperatures may affect individual and population-level fitness. Therefore, the objectives of this research were aimed at gaining a better understanding of the mechanisms that underpin thermal tolerance limits of fish and how those mechanisms may affect fitness and population persistence under …
