Radical Perspectives On The Rise Of Fascism In Germany, 1919-1945, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann Jan 1989

Radical Perspectives On The Rise Of Fascism In Germany, 1919-1945, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann

Books

The rise of National Socialism in Germany and the resulting Holocaust has proven to be one of the most engaging subjects of historical reflection. Rather than presenting the Weimar Republic as a failed democracy, flawed in both its political culture and its democratic institutional tradition, and undermined by an economic collapse, the emphasis here will be on seeing it as a developed capitalist society with distinct structural deficiencies and contradictions that weakened it from the outset.

The Search For Voice: Ideology And Perspective In The Black Community, Phillip L. Clay Sep 1987

The Search For Voice: Ideology And Perspective In The Black Community, Phillip L. Clay

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

During the last seven years there has been a significant shift to the right in the ideological perspectives of American political institutions and behavior. Despite some inconsistencies, the direction is clear. The term "moderate" has acquired a conservative meaning, and liberals have been split into neo-liberal and neoconservative camps. At this moment American society is informally declaring that it is not committed to achieving the goal of equal outcomes long espoused by a mainly liberal national political and institutional system.

The shift to the right is working changes on traditional black ideological perspectives, both among blacks and between black and …

Shift Rotation Among Correctional Officers As A Source Of Perceived Job Related Stress, Phyllis Ingram Jan 1986

Shift Rotation Among Correctional Officers As A Source Of Perceived Job Related Stress, Phyllis Ingram

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My formal hypothesis for this study is that shift rotation among correctional officers has an effect on correctional officer stress. Although there are many definitions of stress, for the purpose of this study stress is defined as conscious nervous tension. Many authors believe that stress develops from a person's reactions to certain situations that are threatening or exert pressure on them. It is felt that whatever the cause, stress depends not on the outside event but on how one reacts to it. For the purpose of this study, stress was not formally defined to the correctional officers because I was …

The Midwest Quarterly; Vol. 26 No. 3, Paul J. Muenzer, Hugh Fox, Ernest Gallo, Charles Guzzetta, Thomas D. Isern, Francis Edward Devine, Michael Heffernan, Lex Runciman, Midwest Quarterly Editors

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

PAUL J. MUENZER presents a translation of the Minoan Phaistos Disk--a supplication for oracular wisdom from the prophet-king. Turning from a career as an electronics engineer, Muenzer became first a technical writer and for the last decade an archaeologist specializing in deciphering Linear A and Linear B texts. He lives and writes in Munich.

HUGH FOX conjures up a living, mythic, unified world of our cultural past in which Old World and New coexist and share a common reality. Author of over fifty books of poetry, criticism, fiction, plays, and Latin American scholarship, among …

Legal Informality And Redistributive Politics, William H. Simon Jan 1985

Legal Informality And Redistributive Politics, William H. Simon

Faculty Scholarship

Until recently, one of the most consistent themes in both right and left critiques of the legal system has been the repudiation of procedural formality, that is, of specialized, rule-bound procedures. The left critique portrayed formality as facilitating the manipulation of the legal system by the privileged to the disadvantage of others. Both right and left critiques portrayed formality as expressing and fostering alienation and antagonism.

In recent years, however, attitudes toward formality on the left have become increasingly complex and ambivalent. This development may be partly a reaction to the rising prominence of a conservative rhetoric that links proposals …

The Need For Compensating Victims Of Violent Crime, Alan Roger Phelps Dec 1983

The Need For Compensating Victims Of Violent Crime, Alan Roger Phelps

Masters Theses

This paper identifies how the victim of violent crime in the United States receives little attention from his or her government. A review of the historical developments which highlight how civilized society has taken the right to punish, negotiate, and receive direct compensation away from the methods of compensating crime victims are examined. Finally, this paper demonstrates how, by utilizing victim compensation programs, the criminal justice system will be improved and the amount of crime and number of victimizations in our society will be reduced.

Policy Traditions In American State Politics, Robert L. Savage May 1983

Policy Traditions In American State Politics, Robert L. Savage

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

An examination of the states across a wide range of policy innovations during three historical periods reveals policy traditions having distinctive geographic limits roughly conforming to major regions commonly recognized in American politics. Only two of these traditions, the "Southern Parochial" and the "Northeastern Bureaucratic," persist across time and even these have been weakened. This provides some evidence that while multilinear evolution along regional lines will continue to contribute to differences in policy values among the American states in the foreseeable future, sociocultural integration is the stronger dynamic in American political development, especially since about 1930.
