Petroleum As A Political Weapon In International Affairs: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Momodou Abdou Rahman Jallow Jan 1978

Petroleum As A Political Weapon In International Affairs: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Momodou Abdou Rahman Jallow

Masters Theses

This study seeks to analyze the role of oil in Saudi Arabia's foreign policy. In 1973 Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations successfully used their oil resources to apply pressure on the United States of America to modify her strong support of the State of Israel. Saudi Arabia played a significant role in the 1973 oil embargo. This thesis will examine Saudi Arabia's role in the 1973-74 Arab oil embargo, and what prompted her participation, considering the fact that she is less radical than most of her Arab neighbors. The 1973 oil embargo was more successful than for example the …

Forward To Our Origins: Social Work Skills And Political Action In The Current Crisis, Bertram A. Weinert Mar 1977

Forward To Our Origins: Social Work Skills And Political Action In The Current Crisis, Bertram A. Weinert

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The last decade of the 19th century and the years prior to World War I was an exciting and fruitful period in United States history. It was a time of unrest, but characterized by vigorous discontent, not cynicism or despair. There was an aggressive optimism that fostered confidence in social action, even to the belief that poverty could be abolished. The failure to achieve that goal remains our burden today, but to have begun the struggle then was a significant step. It was the developing profession of social work that initiated that battle against poverty.

The Soft Spot: How To Attack The Pentagon, Marion Anderson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Have you been wondering why al I the ideas you learned in Economics I haven't been working? Why the forecasts made at summit meetings of economists seem to go wrong? Why the U.S. economy, in utter disregard of all the rules of classical economics, suffers rising inflation and rising unemployment at the same time?

Well, there are reasons. Reasons that establishment economists have not wanted to face, and sti I I refuse to face, because the great myth of the last three decades would then be exposed. The myth is that we are so rich, so productive and so favored …

Expatriate Business And The African Response In Ghana: 1886-1939, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Jun 1976

Expatriate Business And The African Response In Ghana: 1886-1939, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

This thesis discusses the integration of' colonial Ghana into the world trading network between 1886 and 1939. It attempts to explain the underdevelopment of Ghana's economy as a result of her subjection to a system of economic and political imperialism. Ghana's contact with Britain resulted in a situation in which, although her trade economy "developed," her economic potential, as well as the potential for development of her trading and entrepreneurial classes, was thwarted. While three groups, namely the expatriate businessmen, the expatriate Government, and the African elite, interacted in the setting of economic policies, generally speaking the policies were set …

D. J. "Joe" Saia: The Padrone Of Crawford County Politics, Steven K. Baden Jan 1975

D. J. "Joe" Saia: The Padrone Of Crawford County Politics, Steven K. Baden

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

D. J. "Joe" Saia, of Frontenac, Kansas, has been county commissioner and the leader of the Democratic Party in Crawford County, Kansas, for the past three decades. An unemployed coal miner with an eighth-grade education, the county commissioner from Frontenac came from the bottom of the social pyramid. He was able, through his adaptability, tenacity, basic understanding of human nature, and undying concern for those in need, to fight his way to the position of chairman of the Crawford County Board of Commissioners and the leader of a successful political organization.

The road to power was not an easy path, …

The Labyrinth Of Otherness : An Essay On Authoritarian Acquiescence In Mexico, Mary Elizabeth Scott Jan 1975

The Labyrinth Of Otherness : An Essay On Authoritarian Acquiescence In Mexico, Mary Elizabeth Scott

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In this inquiry, the attempt is made first to see Mexico through the eyes of Octavio Paz, who in his essay, The Other Mexico: Critique of the Pyramid, considers the development of modern Mexico from a cultural, historical and political perspective and secondly to interface a universal archetype with the Mexican experience. Regarding the first endeavor, it is Paz’s intention to bring his nation to a better understanding of its own peculiar dilemmas and to indicate changes of attitudes essential for salutary future progress. It is true that as Mexico’s renowned poet, essayist, playwright, editor and diplomat, Paz treats the …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

SHORTHANDED for many months, this journal heartily welcomes a new member to its Editorial Board, CALVIN H. MERRIFIELD. A member of the Kansas State College faculty since 1961, he is a professor in the department of psychology and counselor education, has bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Missouri, a Ph. D. from the University of Wyoming, and has published articles in a number of professional journals. We were amused to learn, however, that he began teaching, somewhat informally, in a very different field. During a stint in the U.S. Marine Corps his obvious …
