Social Democracy In North America: A Canadian Example, Rodney Lavern Johnson Jan 1982

Social Democracy In North America: A Canadian Example, Rodney Lavern Johnson

Masters Theses

This thesis attempts to discuss a unique political phenomenon in North America - successful Canadian socialism. The first part discusses a workable definition of ideology and a theoretical approach to the explanation of legitimate ideological diversity. The second part of the paper explains the socio-economic and political milieu of Western Canadian society in the early twentieth century and the evolution of a consequent Anglophone socialist movement in response to this environment. The African Foreign Policy Of The German Democratic Republic, Heide R. Kersey Aug 1981

The African Foreign Policy Of The German Democratic Republic, Heide R. Kersey

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes the different activities sponsored by the German Democratic Republic to achieve its foreign policy goals in Africa from the late 1950s to the present. The GDR's foreign policy goals and their interaction with each other are examined. Types of GDR activities covered include solidarity assistance, contact building in Africa, United Nations diplomacy, propaganda, cultural foreign policy, trade policy, and military aid. This thesis demonstrates that the role of the GDR in Africa must be understood in the context of the Soviet Union's and the Warsaw Pact states' support of proletarian internationalism and solidarity. However, through its activities …

Mining The Deep Seabed Implications For International Law And American Foreign Policy, Steven H. Fitzgerald May 1981

Mining The Deep Seabed Implications For International Law And American Foreign Policy, Steven H. Fitzgerald

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Whether or not the United States may someday face a mineral shortage, the need for a coherent, unified minerals policy is critical to national objectives and national security. Deep-sea mining may be the answer to American (and world) mineral needs in the twenty-first century. However, there are numerous problems which must be dealt with and resolved in the near future, in order to enable the U.S. (and the world community) to take advantage of vast undersea resources. Deep-sea mining requires the development of technology, tremendous capital investments, and years of labor before production can begin. U.S. policy makers must decide …

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank Jan 1980

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank

Theses and Dissertations

In the struggle for self-government which occupied the Mormon population of Utah between their entry into the Great Basin in 1847 and statehood in 1896, the issue of polygamy dominated public discussion. The non-Mormon population of the United States generally objected to the practice of polygamy, in large part because of Victorian attitudes towards sexual activity and the presumed physical and mental results of violating Victorian sexual norms. It was assumed by most Americans that polygamy, by violating those norms, caused real physical damage to the Latter-day Saints in Utah; damage that disqualified them from holding full and equal political …

Maintenance Of An Empire: Soviet Foreign Behaviour In The ’80s, Pierre Eugene Lacompte Jan 1980

Maintenance Of An Empire: Soviet Foreign Behaviour In The ’80s, Pierre Eugene Lacompte

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The thesis undertakes an examination of certain Soviet problems which upon analysis serve to support the views of publicists such as Richard Nixon, Richard Pipes, Edward Luttwak, Paul Nitze, and Eugene Rostow. These experts argue that the Soviet Union is bent on a course of world hegemony. The objective of the thesis is to determine if the Soviet leadership is under lateral pressure to expand. Two proportions underline the broad theme of the thesis: that the Soviet Union is the de facto Russian empire, with the same concerns, i.e. stability and Russian domination; that real arms restraint on the part …

The United States And China: From Noncommunication To Diplomatic Relations, Mary Jeanne Patrick Dec 1979

The United States And China: From Noncommunication To Diplomatic Relations, Mary Jeanne Patrick

Masters Theses

After more than two decades of fundamental differences due to lack of direct diplomatic relations, the People's Republic of China and the United States are developing a harmonious working relationship. Friendly relations between these two major nations began to improve in 1972 during President Richard Nixon's visit to China that had been arranged by Henry Kissinger, Assistant for National Security Affairs.

The purpose of this thesis is to show that nations can overcome their negative stereotyped images with one another when their leaders will enter into effective communication.

Chapter I considers the historical aspects of the Sino-American relationship.

Chapter II …

Problems Of Political Development In Bangladesh, Haroon-Ar-Rashid Khan
