Performance differences between native and exotic invasive plants are often considered static, but invasive grasses may achieve growth advantages in western North America shrublands and steppe under only optimal growing conditions. We examine differences in N uptake and several morphological variables that influence uptake at temperatures between 5 and 25 C. We contrast two native perennial grasses in western North America: Elymus elymoides and Pseudoroegneria spicata; two invasive annual grasses: Bromus tectorum and Taeniatherum caputmedusae; and one highly selected non-native perennial grass: Agropyron cristatum. The influence of temperature on N uptake is poorly characterized, yet these invasive annual grasses are …

Effects Of Short-Term Dewatering On Grazer Abundance And Algal Biomass In A Wastewater Treatment Algal Turf Scrubber, Emily Husted
Theses and Dissertations
Finding a new, clean, and sustainable energy source to replace fossil fuels is one of society’s most daunting challenges. Algae biomass is a promising renewable resource for biofuel production due to its efficient conversion of solar energy into chemical energy. Algal turf scrubbers (ATS™) systems mimic natural streams, flowing wastewater over hard substrates designed to encourage attached algae growth. This study focuses on the use of replicated ATS™ systems, because they are low maintenance, are effective for removing nutrient pollutants, model natural stream ecosystems, and can produce large volumes of harvestable algal feedstock for biofuel production. A challenge that occurs …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Current wet chemical methods for biomass composition analysis using two-step sulfuric acid hydrolysis are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and unable to provide structural information about biomass. Infrared techniques provide fast, low-cost analysis, are non-destructive, and have shown promising results. Chemometric analysis has allowed researchers to perform qualitative and quantitative study of biomass with both near-infrared and mid-infrared spectroscopy. This review summarizes the progress and applications of infrared techniques in biomass study, and compares the infrared and the wet chemical methods for composition analysis. In addition to reviewing recent studies of biomass structure and composition, we also discuss the progress and prospects for …

Thorns serve as mechanical defenses of plants against herbivory. However, plant thorns harbor microorganisms that are potentially pathogenic. These pathogens may be transferred to herbivores and other animals and provide an additional defense for the plants. Thorns from 5 plant species native to the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas were collected and used to isolate bacteria colonizing the thorn surface. Thorns, leaves and stems of plants were visualized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to observe any bacteria on the plant surface. Isolated bacteria were tested for their ability to grow in aerobic versus anaerobic environments, to produce hemolysis, carbon …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Morphological revision and phylogenetic analysis of Stachys L. sect. Eriostomum (Hoffmanns. & Link) Dumort. (Lamiaceae) based on nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) sequences were conducted. Morphological analysis confirmed the previous arrangements of 3 subsections, i.e. Germanicae R.Bhattacharjee, Creticae R.Bhattacharjee, and Spectabiles R.Bhattacharjee, while suggesting some status changes and new records that were also confirmed by the phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic analysis suggested, however, some arrangements different from those indicated by morphology. Two subsections, i.e. Creticae and Germanicae-Spectabiles, instead of 3 were observed in the phylogenetic tree. The tree also suggested that 9 Stachys cretica L. subspecies form a polyphyletic …

Various evaluations like organoleptic and microscopic characteristics, preliminary phytochemical screening, and fluorescence analysis were carried out on the pulp, husk, leaves, and seeds of both plants in powdered form to establish appropriate data that can aid rapid and easy differentiation between them. The results showed that these 2 species can be differentiated macroscopically and microscopically but tests of phytochemical analysis were not absolutely felicitous for this aim. In …

In this study, we researched the main aquatic vegetation (AV) species and their orthophosphate and turbidity removal efficiencies in the Lower Kelkit Basin of Turkey. We chose an experimental area (1650 m^2) in the field and determined orthophosphate (mg/L) and turbidity (NTU) variables at the charging and discharging points between November 2005 and March 2006. We also applied an experimental design including 9 treatments and 3 replications in aquarium conditions. Orthophosphate (mg/L) contents of each aquarium were measured at 6 time periods (initial measurement and days 1, 4, 9, 16, and 25). Ceratophyllum demersum L., Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kützing, Lemna …
