The Energy Expenditure Of Heifers Grazing Crested Wheatgrass Rangeland In West-Central Utah, Kris M. Havstad
The Energy Expenditure Of Heifers Grazing Crested Wheatgrass Rangeland In West-Central Utah, Kris M. Havstad
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The free-roaming ruminant requires energy for the demands of vii grazing, traveling and thermoregulation that are not required by its confined counterpart. Literature estimates of these additional costs range from 10 to 170 percent above maintenance. The uncertain magnitude of this increased demand and the factors that contribute to it impede the ability of the rangeland ruminant nutritionist to establish guidelines for the energy requirements of the free-roaming herbivore. This study was designed to estimate the energy expenditure of yearling Angus heifers while grazing a declining supply of available crested wheatgrass forage (Agropyron cristatum) on rangeland in west-central …

Some Morphological And Chemical Responses Of Blackbrush (Coleogyne Ramosissima) To Goat Browsing: Influences On Dietary Blackbrush Selection By Goats And Cattle, Frederick D. Provenza
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Domestic goats were used to modify the growth form of blackbrush, a spinescent shrub occurring in nearly monospecific stands on several million hectares of rangeland in the southwestern United States. The objective of this research was to evaluate goat browsing as a means of improving these rangelands for cattle. Winter goat browsing stimulated spring twig growth from basal and axillary buds which resulted in increased production.
Twig production by heavily browsed plants (>95 percent removal of current season's twigs) was a function of precipitation, soil depth, branch location on the plant, and period of rest after browsing. As precipitation …
Natural Pastures Of The Macquarie Region Of New South Wales: Their Origin, Composition And Management, David Leslie Michaelk
Natural Pastures Of The Macquarie Region Of New South Wales: Their Origin, Composition And Management, David Leslie Michaelk
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Two experiments were conducted in the semi-arid (400 millimeter annual rainfall) Macquarie region of New South Wales, Australia, at the Trangie Agricultural Research Station (31° 59'S; 147° S7'E), to examine (a) the way botanical parameters can be used to separate grazing and climatic impacts on range vegetation, and (b) how this delineation affects application of range science tenets (site, condition and trend) to different pasture types.
Two range sites were studied: Site 1, a light soil type, was dominated by annual grasses, legumes and forbs, whereas perennial grasses (mainly Chloris acieularis and Chloris truncata) dominated the heavy soils of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the interactive effects of water salinity, volume of water applied at each irrigation, sodium adsorption ratio and rhizobial strain upon 15 plant growth parameters of Phaseolus vulgaris L. Four levels of water salinity (ECW 0.4, 3.0, 6.0, or 9.0 mmho/cm), three levels of water volume (200, 400, or 800 ml per pot), three levels of SAR (4, 16, or 64) and three strains of Rhizobium phaseoli (K-17, K-47, or K-52) were used. The treatments were replicated with all possible combinations. Data were subjected to analysis of variance, multiple comparisons, and path coefficient …
Fertility And Saline Water Management Interactions On Plant Growth And Nitrogen Fixation In Phaseolus, Robin R. Drysdale Rodriguez
Fertility And Saline Water Management Interactions On Plant Growth And Nitrogen Fixation In Phaseolus, Robin R. Drysdale Rodriguez
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A greenhouse study was conducted involving interactive effects on bean yield of three levels of irrigation water salinity, three frequencies of irrigation water app li cation, two level s of nitrogen, and seven levels of phosphorus fertilization to determine if the effects of adverse saline conditions or water stress could be overcome by fertility and/or saline water management.
Dry matter and bean yields were reduced with decreasing irrigation frequency (2 days to 8 days) and increasing salinity of irrigation water (0.5 mmho/cm to 8.0 mmho/cm). At low salinity levels (0.5 mmho/cm) dry matter production and the number of pods per …
Efficient Pasture Systems, J. Kenneth Evans, Garry D. Lacefield
Efficient Pasture Systems, J. Kenneth Evans, Garry D. Lacefield
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
The manner in which a pasture is grazed will have a marked influence on pasture productivity. persistence. quality and animal performance. Very light grazing pressure (few animals per unit area) results in high production per animal because animals can graze selectively. Low production per acre will be obtained because forage is wasted. Very heavy grazing pressure {many animals per unit area) may force animals to consume low quality plants or plant parts. If this occurs for very long. production per animal will be low. but production per acre may be increased because little forage is wasted. Also. persistence of desirable …
Nutritional Preferences Exhibited By Plants In Ad Libitum Feed Systems, L. A. Errede
Nutritional Preferences Exhibited By Plants In Ad Libitum Feed Systems, L. A. Errede
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Ad libitum feeding plant systems fitted with two reservoirs were used to monitor daily aqueous uptake by plants from paired reservoirs. When the reservoirs contained aqueous solutions of the same chemical composition, a plant accepted nourishment from alternate sources without bias; but when the reservoirs contained different aqueous solutions, i.e. either tap water or standard nutrient solution, a sharp bias was exhibited, depending on the plant's need for mineral nutrient, which changed with time. Eventually a "stable-end-state" was attained, favoring water over the standard nutrient solution in the ratio of 3 to 1. When the plant was pruned severely, however, …

Heat Tolerance Of Kentucky Bluegrasses, Perennial Ryegrasses, And Annual Bluegrass, David J. Wehner, T. L. Watschke
Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship
Use of cool-season turfgrasses in transitional environments is limited, in part, by their heat tolerance. Development of a rapid heat tolerance screening technique would be of value in determining the potential of turf•grasses for use in warmer areas.
The heat tolerance of 22 Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cultivars, Poa annua L., and four perennial ryegrass cultivars (Lolium perenne L.) was evaluated by exposing plants for 30 min to temperatures ranging from 41 to 49 C in single degree intervals. Ten-week-old plants, which had been grown under a low level of N fertilization and watered infrequently to maximize …

Influence Of Phosphate Source On Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Of Bouteloua Gracilis, Michael F. Allen, James C. Sexton, Thomas S. Moore Jr., Martha Christensen
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Non-mycorrhizal and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis infected with Glomus fasciculatus were grown in defined media containing different phosphate sources and compared with respect to phosphate content and form, biomass, chlorophyll concentration, and root phosphatase activity. The phosphate sources were sodium monobasic phosphate, a mixture of sodium monobasic phosphate and calcium phytate, and calcium phytate. Inositol and inositol plus calcium were added to the sodium phosphate medium as additional treatments. Mycorrhizal infection was highest in roots of plants grown in the presence of phytate (75%). Lower root infection levels were noted in plants from the sodium phosphate (19%) and mixed phosphate …

Effects Of Reduced Tillage And Multiple Cropping On Plant Diseases, Donald R. Sumner, Ben Doupnik Jr., M. G. Boosalis
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
In the past, tillage research on plant diseases was concerned primarily with practices that buried plant residues in single-crop production systems. The burial of plant debris to destroy pathogens is an ancient agricultural prac tice (34). Each crop was tested as a single entity, and most crop rotations were based on one crop per year. Interest in notill and conservation tillage systems and mUltiple cropping has increased in the past two decades be cause of the scarcity and increased cost of fossil fuels, periodic world food shortages, and the concern over soil erosion (73,110). These concerns are of such paramount …

Insecticides And Pheromones Used In The Midwest. A Short Review, Evelyn Osbourne, Paul Schwartz
Insecticides And Pheromones Used In The Midwest. A Short Review, Evelyn Osbourne, Paul Schwartz
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The Midwest produces most of the food and feed grains and oilseeds grown in the US. as well as a substantial proportion of a variety of other crops, but corn accounts for at least 75% of insecticide use in the region. The total amount of insecticides used on crops could be greatly reduced if economic losses from insects could be predicted accurately. We will examine the current status of chemical controls for insects of economic importance to this region, indicating some areas where new developments are needed or are likely to occur.

Housing And Management To Reduce Climactic Impacts On Livestock, G. Leroy Hahn
Housing And Management To Reduce Climactic Impacts On Livestock, G. Leroy Hahn
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Weather is a constraint on efficient livestock production systems. Evaluation of the degree of constraint is a difficult, but necessary task before selection of appropriate modifications in management or environments can be made. The basis for rational selection from available alternatives for the limitation of climatic stress in livestock has continued to improve, particularly with the development of rudimentary functional relationships between animal performance and weather parameters. Such relationships, when combined with probabilistic knowledge of the weather parameters, permit prediction of the reduction in animal performance under natural conditions, or of the benefits to be derived from proposed housing or …

Comparative Water Relations And Photosynthesis Of Mycorrhizal And Non-Mycorrhizal Bouteloua Gracilis H.B.K. Lag Ex Steud., Michael F. Allen, William K. Smith, Thomas S. Moore Jr., Martha Christensen
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The rangeland grass, Bouteloua gracilis was inoculated with its mycorrhizal symbiont, Glomus fasciculatus, to determine the influence of vesicular-arhuscular mycorrhizae on water status, stomatal behaviour and photosynthesis as well as gross plant morphology, biomass and phosphorus content. Mycorrhizal infection increased transpiration rates by over 100% with 50 to 70% lower leaf resistances to water vapour diffusion. Leaf xylem pressure was not different between mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants indicating that whole-plant resistance to water transport was reduced by more than 50%. Photosynthetic rates under saturating light conditions increased 68% with infection as a consequence of a 33% reduction in stomatal …

Ultrastructural Localization Of Solanidine In Potato Tubers, Shau-Ron Han
Ultrastructural Localization Of Solanidine In Potato Tubers, Shau-Ron Han
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Solanine, the green substance in potato, Solanum tuberosum L., tubers, is a toxic glycoalkaloid that is a potential human health hazard. To control the formation of this glycoalkaloid a greater understanding of its site of synthesis is needed. Labelling of solanidine, a direct precursor in the biosynthesis of solanine, with digitonin may indirectly locate the site of solanine synthesis in tubers. A study using ultrastructural cytochemical techniques was initiated to explore this possibility.
Sprouted tips and peridermal complex (periderm and cortex) tissue were fixed three different ways: (1) glutaraldehyde only, (2) osmium tetroxide and glutaraldehyde, and (3) glutaraldehyde-osmium tetroxide-digitonin mixture. …
