Variation In Leaf Macronutrients Of Overstory Trees As Influenced By Species Season And Soil Type In The Great Dismal Swamp Of Virginia, Bruce J. Bandle

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Leaf macronutrient variation was studied in four plant communities in the Dismal Swamp of Virginia. composition differed markedly between these sites. Soils and species Eight important overstory trees were studied in August 1980; whereas red maple (Acer rubrum L.} and black gum (Nyssa sylvatica Marsh.}, which occurred on all four sites, were sampled seasonally. Significant differences (p .05) were found in the nutrient concentrations of the leaves between species, seasons, and sites. These differences may be attributed to inherent species characteristics, leaf expansion, nutrient translocation, and differences in soil organic matter content, pH, and degree of …

Respiration, Carbohydrate Content, And Leaf Growth Of Tall Fescue, Lowell E. Moser, J. J. Volenec, C. J. Nelson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) was grown in controlled environment chambers with a 14-hour photoperiod, and then kept in darkness for 8 days in one experiment and 20 days in another. The objectives were to determine concentrations of total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) and relate them to leaf elongation rates (LER) and to rates of dark respiration (R,). After various times in darkness, leaf terminal meristems in vegetative tillers, root tips, and center-sections of collared leaf blades were excised, and oxygen consumption was measured.

Oxygen consumption was generally highest in terminal meristerns, intermediate in root tips, and lowest in mature …

Innovations In Hay Harvesting And Storing, V. L. Lectenberg, D. A. Holt Apr 1982

Innovations In Hay Harvesting And Storing, V. L. Lectenberg, D. A. Holt

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Haymaking in the humid parts of the U.S. is the most risky operation that farmers engage in. Standing hay is extremely high in moisture and must be dried to at least 25% moisture less before it can be stored without spoilage. Most farmers rely on natural field drying processes to cure their hay. Natural drying is often slowed by high relative humidity. Rainfall frequently occurs before the hay has dried which further slows the drying process and can result in serious nutrient and yield losses. Haymaking is also a labor-intensive farming operation and, until recently, involved a large amount of …

Performance Of Blends Of Short, Medium, And Tall Sorghum For Forage, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to evaluate a wider range of plant types and agronomic and quality traits than had been previously reported for blends of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]. Three groups of sorghum cultivars and hybrids, each including a i-dwarf (tall), a 2-dwarf (medium), and a 3-dwarf (short) sorghum, were used in a 2-year study. Within each group the following seven blends were compared: tall (T), medium (M), and short (S); T and M; T and S; M and S; T alone; M alone; and S alone. Principal emphasis was given to total dry matter (DM) production (sum …

Legume Distribution And Nodulation In Arapaho Prairie, Arthur County, Nebraska, L. A. Kapustka, J. D. Dubois Mar 1982

Legume Distribution And Nodulation In Arapaho Prairie, Arthur County, Nebraska, L. A. Kapustka, J. D. Dubois

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Vegetational sampling of the legumes of Arapaho Prairie, located in the southwest portion of the Sand Hills of Nebraska, was conducted in June 1980. Lathyrus polymorphus, Petalostemon purpureum, Psoralea digitata and Amorpha canescens were the leading dominants. The overall density of legumes was 0.309 plants m-2.

Of eight examined, only Petalostemon villosum and Glycyrrhiza lepidota supported large numbers of nodules. The others including the dominant legumes were unnodulated or had only a few, usually degenerate nodules.

It appears that the legumes are of minor importance in the overall N economy of Arapaho Prairie. Nevertheless since many …

Phosphorus Nutrition On Leaching Sands., D. M. Deeley, S. M. Mason, B. G. Barker

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The excessive amounts of nutrients entering the Peel-Harvey Estuarine system have resulted in a marked increase in the abundance of algal species .within the estuary and reduced production on the sandy coastal soils of the catchment from which the nutrients are being leached. Recent stream samplings by D.C.E have shown that the deep grey Bassendean sands may be contributing up to 40 per cent of the total P loading in the Harvey River. Agriculture Department trials around Albany on similar sands have shown that up to 80 per cent of the bicarb extractable P may be lost after only 150 …

Influence Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Water Movement Through Bouteloua Gracilis (H.B.K.) Lag Ex Steud, Michael F. Allen Jan 1982

Influence Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Water Movement Through Bouteloua Gracilis (H.B.K.) Lag Ex Steud, Michael F. Allen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Root growth characteristics and water transport were compared between non-mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis infected with Glomus fasciculatus. Mycorrhizal plants did not have significantly different leaf area or root length from non-mycorrhizal plants, hut did have significantly fewer and shorter root hairs. Mycorrhizal plants had 50% lower leaf resistance with no change in leaf or root water potentials; thus transpiration was increased 100% with a 50% reduction in whole-plant, soil-to-root and root-to-leaf resistance. Assuming that the difference in water uptake was due to transport via the mycorrhizal hyphae, estimated fungus-to-root transport was 2◦8 x 10-5 …

Diospyros Virginiana: The American Persimmon, Michael P. Quinnett Jan 1982

Diospyros Virginiana: The American Persimmon, Michael P. Quinnett

Masters Theses

The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.) is a deciduous tree native to the Southeastern United States, and is the only genus of the Ebenaceae that is indigenous. This study is a complete reveiw of what is known about this species concerning taxonomy, ecology, morphology, history, distribution, anatomy, cytology, propagation, diseases, and pests, toxicity, chemical composition, and economic values.

The sexuality and fruit production of the persimmon is variable and not well understood. The small bell shaped flowers are usually dioecious, but they may also be monoecious, or monoecious in one year and dioecious in another. In rarer instances they …

Utilization Of The Intact Male For Red Meat Production: A Review, S. C. Seideman, H. R. Cross, R. R. Oltjen, B. D. Schanbacher Jan 1982

Utilization Of The Intact Male For Red Meat Production: A Review, S. C. Seideman, H. R. Cross, R. R. Oltjen, B. D. Schanbacher

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Castration has long been a traditional practice in the United States. Research studies indicate that intact males grow more rapidly, utilize feed more efficiently and produce a higher-yielding carcass with less fat and more edible product. The disadvantages of the intact male include aggressive behavior (bull and boar); undesirable odors and flavors (boar and ram); lower quality grade (bull); lower meat tenderness (bull and ram) and undesirable meat color (bull and ram). Research is needed to develop antemortem and(or) postmortem handling procedures that offset the disadvantages of the intact male so that the meat and livestock industry can take advantage …

Effects Of Contrasting Photoperiods And Temperatures On Performance Traits Of Confinement-Reared Ewe Lambs, B. D. Schanbacher, G. L. Hahn, J. A. Nienaber

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The effects of contrasting photoperiods (16L:8D vs 8L: 16D) and ambient temperatures (5 C vs 18 C vs 31 C) on performance traits of ewe lambs have been evaluated. Seventy-two lambs were paired and allotted to one of six treatment groups in a 2 • 3 factorial experiment. The lambs were fed a pelleted diet ad libitum. throughout the 14-wk study (i.e., as Iambs progressed from 12 to 26 wk of age). "Analysis of performance and carcass data showed that both photoperiod and temperature affected growth rate (P.05) by treatment. Whereas serum prolactin concentrations were elevated in lambs exposed to …

The Plant Pathogenic Corynebacteria, Anne K. Vidaver Jan 1982

The Plant Pathogenic Corynebacteria, Anne K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The plant pathogenic corynebacteria are a fascinating group of bacteria that produce effects as diverse as any in the microbial world, ranging from wilts to abnormal growths. Several new pathogens have been discovered since this group was reviewed by Jensen (75), Starr (157), and Lelliott (96). Most subsequent reviews have dealt with taxonomy. The areas covered in this review necessarily reflect my biases and limitations. However, this review attempts to be comprehensive in some areas, and it calls attention to other areas that would benefit from more detailed investigation.
