Horse Pasture, Garry D. Lacefield, J. Kenneth Evans, John P. Baker Jan 1980

Horse Pasture, Garry D. Lacefield, J. Kenneth Evans, John P. Baker

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Pastures for horses should be more than mere exercise lots. High quality pasture can supply enough protein, vitamins, and minerals to meet the nutritional needs of most pleasure horses at relatively low cost. Although pastures furnish substantial amounts of energy, working horses will likely need additional energy supplementation. In addition, pasture will help to maintain healthy animals by furnishing the bulk needed in horse rations, as well as exercise areas, sunshine, and fresh air.

The pasture should be enclosed by a safe, strong fence. Fresh water and shade should also be provided. The pasture should be large enough to encourage …

Growth And Performance Of Growing-Finishing Lambs Exposed To Long Or Short Photoperiods, B. D. Schanbacher, J. D. Crouse Jan 1980

Growth And Performance Of Growing-Finishing Lambs Exposed To Long Or Short Photoperiods, B. D. Schanbacher, J. D. Crouse

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The effects of photoperiod (8 hr light: 16 hr dark [8L:16D] or 16L:8D) on performance of growing-finishing lambs were evaluated in an experiment with 24 rams and 24 wethers. All lambs were caged in groups of two in a controlled environment and fed a pelleted diet ad libitum for the duration of the study (10 to 22 weeks of age). Performance and carcass data showed that both photoperiod and sex of lamb affected growth rate (P<.01) and feed efficiency (P<.05) but that only sex of lamb affected carcass quality (P<.05) and yield (P<.10). A sex by photoperiod interaction was not observed for any of the traits measured. Average daily gain (grams/per day) and feed efficiency (feed/gain) for lambs in the four treatment groups tested were: rams (16L:8D), 410 and 4.3; rams (8L:16D), 340 and 4.5; wethers (16L:8D), 345 and 4.6, and wethers (8L:16D), 300 and 4.8, respectively. Carcass weight, like slaughter weight, was affected by photoperiod (P<.01) and sex of lamb (P<.05); both rams and wethers exposed to long photoperiods had the heaviest carcasses. Ram carcasses were leaner, had better yield grades and were heavier than wether carcasses, yet both ram and wether carcasses graded Choice. Testosterone concentrations in serum were undetectable (<.2 ng/ml) at 22 weeks of age in wethers but were elevated (P<.O1) in ram lambs exposed to short (3.4 ± 1.4 ng/ml) or long (.8 ± .2 ng/ml) photoperiods. Prolactin concentrations, on the other hand, were not influenced by sex of lamb but were influenced (P<.01) by photoperiod; i.e., prolactin concentrations were high in rams (190 ± 34 ng/ml) and wethers (178 ± 28 ng/ml) exposed to long photoperiods and low in rams (43 ± 9 ng/ml) and wethers (27 ± 11 ng/ml) exposed to short photoperiods. These results suggest that testosterone and prolactin may independently affect growth and performance of growing-finishing lambs.

Ecotypic Differentiation Of Andropogon Virginicus L. In Relation To Strip Mine Spoil Banks, Valina Kay Hurt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Reciprocal plantings of populations of broomsedge, taken from an abandoned strip mine and from an abandoned farm plot in south central Kentucky, on strip mine spoil and abandoned field soil resulted in patterns of populations differentiation. Clonal plantings of populations from strip mine habitats and old field development appeared equal in height and biomass when grown on old field soils in both field trials and growth chamber studies. Populations when planted in strip mine soils in field trials and controlled growth experiments. Later flowering in strip mine populations may be a key to survival strategy in the harsh microclimates of …

Some Effects Of A Grazer, Hyalella Azteca On Ecosystem Level Properties In Aquatic Microcosms, Martin D. Werner May 1979

Some Effects Of A Grazer, Hyalella Azteca On Ecosystem Level Properties In Aquatic Microcosms, Martin D. Werner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study to determine some ecosystem level effects of an aquatic invertebrate grazer, Hyalella azteca, was performed in aquatic ix microcosms. Impact of the grazer was assessed in three general areas: 1) inorganic nutrient levels of the microcosm water column, 2) productivity and respiration of the biotic community, and 3) plant community composition in the microcosms.

The grazing amphipod caused inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen (except ammonia) levels to be elevated in the microcosms. The increase was due, at least partially, to excretion of nutrients into the water by the amphipod. The presence of H. azteca did not significantly …

Comparison Of Tolerance To High Moisture Conditions Of The Soil Among Crop Plants: Studies On The Comparative Plant Nutrition [English Translation], Toshiaki Tadano, Kiyokazu Kirimoto, Isao Aoyama, Arika Tanaka

Publications

Tolerance to high moisture conditions in the soil was compared for eighteen crop species, and factors causing differences among species were studied: 1) When the moisture content of a soil was kept high, the soil air contained 10.5 - 17.5% of O2 and 5.0 - 9.8% of CO2, and the soil solution was not very high in Fe, Mn or NO2-N. 2) Cruciferae, Solanaceae, sugar beet, field bean, pea, cucumber and Chrysanthemum coronarium were very susceptible to this condition, but maize, soybean, and onion were tolerant. Rice grew better under this condition than under ordinary upland conditions. 3) Tolerance to …

The Place For Annual Brome Grass, G W. Anderson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Grasses in the anual pastures of southern Australia are particularly important early in the growing season.

The main grass sown, has been annual rygrass, but concerns are emerging with 'annual ryegrass toxicity' and and 'in crop' competition.

This work looks at the role of annual brome grass in pastures.

Wheat Potential Yield Trials - 79ka17 D. Hall, Beaufort River - 79wh32 Wongan Hills Research Station, R N. Weir, D Tennant, A. G. P. Brown, M. W. Perry

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

COMMENTS 1. No insect problems experienced and broadleaf weeds effectively controlled by spraying. Septoria· leaf spot incidence insufficient to affect yields. 2. Little effect of time of planting on either total dry matter or grain yield. Crop received about 70% of the average May-October rainfall with a very dry September-October. Perhaps the distribution of rainfall allowed a similar pattern of water use, and total water use by each planting time. 3. There is probably a significant effect of Nitrogen regime on grain yield. Osmocote (N3) consistently yielded more than either single (N1) or repeated (N2) dressings of Agran 34:0. The …

Control Of Partitioning And Export Of Carbon In Leaves Of Higher-Plants, Donald R. Geiger Jan 1979

Control Of Partitioning And Export Of Carbon In Leaves Of Higher-Plants, Donald R. Geiger

Biology Faculty Publications

Within source leaves, partition of assimilated carbon and export are regulated to both leaf and plant ontogeny and to environmental conditions. System goals, adaptive responses, control mechanisms, and information flow are developed from the viewpoint that a well-adapted plant is an integrated system. Regulation of partitioning and export involves both feedforward control and feedback homeostasis. Export is controlled by regulation of metabolism which supplies assimilated material to be translocated, by control of efflux into the free space of material destined for export, and by regulation of phloem loading. Control of export by the latter two processes depends on responsive metabolic …

Growth Analysis Of Tall Fescue Genotypes Differing In Yield And Leaf Photosynthesis, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson Nov 1978

Growth Analysis Of Tall Fescue Genotypes Differing In Yield And Leaf Photosynthesis, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Relationships between leaf photosynthesis and yield have not been well defined in forage grasses. Therefore, leaf growth, dry matter distribution, carbohydrate concentration, and growth analysis of four genotypes of tall fescue (Festuca mundinacea Schreb.) were examined. Genotypes, selected in the field for high and low CO2 exchange rate (CER) in combination with high and low yield, were compared in an attempt to study the relationship between photosynthesis and yield.

In the vegetative growth stage, high yielding genotypes produced greater amounts of all plant parts (leaves, stem bases, and roots) than did low yielding genotypes; however, low yielding genotypes …

Leaf Growth, Leaf Aging, And Photosynthetic Rate Of Tall Fescue Genotypes, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson Sep 1978

Leaf Growth, Leaf Aging, And Photosynthetic Rate Of Tall Fescue Genotypes, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Leaf growth and leaf aging both influence the total amount of CO, fixed by a particular leaf in the canopy during its photosynthetically productive life. Four genotypes of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) were selected for all combinations of high and low COB exchange rates (CER) and yield. The purpose of this study was to determine CER during aging and leaf growth rates of tall fescue genotypes in growth chambers and in the field on a Mexico silt loam (Udollic Ochraqualfs; fine, montmarillonitic, mesic). Leaf growth of vegetative tillers in controlled environments was continuous throughout the day for all …

Irradiance Response Of Tall Fescue Genotypes With Contrasting Levels Of Photosynthesis And Yield, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson May 1978

Irradiance Response Of Tall Fescue Genotypes With Contrasting Levels Of Photosynthesis And Yield, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine if genotype by irradiance interactions or genetic variation in diurnal trends of CO, exchange rate (CER) influenced the CER-yield relationship in tall fescue (Festuca mundinucea Schreb.). Genotypes were selected in the field for high CER-high yield, high CER-low yield, low CER-high yield, and low CER-low yield. Responses of CER to photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of these genotypes were determined using both growth chamber- and field-grown material. The shapes of the PPFD response curves were similar for all genotypes, and saturation occurred at approximately 1,200 μE m-2 sec-1 (400 …

The Potential For Avocados In Western Australia, Michael Gregory Hawson Jan 1978

The Potential For Avocados In Western Australia, Michael Gregory Hawson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

"The flesh of the ripe fruit is ivory yellow, framed in a surround of exquisite green"

There is only one fruit to which this comment can apply and that is the avocado.

While now regarded as a luxury, avocados have met ready demand on major markets indicating that limited expansion of avocado growing in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australiacouldmprovide quite profitable returns.
