Wavefront Sensor Based On Angle Selectivity Of An Optical Filter, Andreas Zepp, Emma Branigan, Julien Garnier, Kevin Murphy, Raphael Bellossi, Karin Stein, Szymon Gladysz
Conference Papers
The effectiveness of free-space laser communications is limited due to wavefront deformations caused by atmospheric optical turbulence. To determine these deformations, we propose a wavefront sensor that utilizes the angular selectivity of an optical transmission filter to measure the first derivative of the wavefront. The transmission filter converts the gradients of the incident wavefront into an intensity distribution. For each direction (x and y) this distribution is captured twice, with different angles between filter and optical axis for each measurement. The contrast of both measurements (calculated for each pixel of the used detector) and the local gradients of the wavefront …

We present a sample of 1165 extreme emission-line galaxies (EELGs) at 4 < z < 9 selected using James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam photometry in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) program. We use a simple method to photometrically identify EELGs with Hβ + [O iii] (combined) or Hα emission of observed-frame equivalent width (EW) > 5000 Å. JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopic observations of a subset (34) of the photometrically selected EELGs validate our selection method: All spectroscopically observed EELGs confirm our photometric identification of extreme emission, including some cases where the spectral-energy-distribution-derived photometric redshifts are incorrect. We find that the medium-band F410M filter in CEERS is particularly efficient at identifying EELGs, both in terms of including emission lines in the filter and in correctly identifying the continuum between Hβ + [O iii] and Hα in the neighboring broadband filters. We present examples of EELGs that …
Modeling Permittivity Measurements Of Thin Film Materials Versus Film Thickness, Jr Dennison, Cameron Eggleston
Modeling Permittivity Measurements Of Thin Film Materials Versus Film Thickness, Jr Dennison, Cameron Eggleston
Journal Articles
Measured permittivity of thin film polymeric samples were substantially less for thin samples, asymptotically approaching bulk values above ~500 μm. For ~25 μm samples the observed permittivities were as much as 50% less than for bulk measurements. This behavior has been studied for four common homogeneous polymeric materials for sample thickness in the range of ~10 μm to > 1000 μm. To quantify these observations, an empirical single-parameter model was developed to correct measured permittivity of thin samples based on an effective stray capacitance in series with the samples to compensate for effects attributed to instrumentation.

Quantum Many-Body Scars From Unstable Periodic Orbits, Bertrand Evrard, Andrea Pizzi, Simeon I. Mistakidis, Ceren B. Dag
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) play a key role in the theory of chaos, constituting the "skeleton" of classical chaotic systems and "scarring" the eigenstates of the corresponding quantum system. Recently, nonthermal many-body eigenstates embedded in an otherwise thermal spectrum have been identified as a many-body generalization of quantum scars. The latter, however, are not clearly associated to a chaotic phase space, and the connection between the single- and many-body notions of quantum scars remains therefore incomplete. Here, we find the first quantum many-body scars originating from UPOs of a chaotic phase space. Remarkably, these states verify the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, …

We present the most precise measurements to date for the spatial extension and energy spectrum of the γ-ray region between a pulsar's wind nebula and the interstellar medium, better known as the halo, present around Geminga and PSR B0656+14 (Monogem) using ∼2398 days of >1 TeV data collected by the HAWC observatory. We interpret the data using a physically motivated model for the diffuse γ-ray emission generated from positrons and electrons (e±) injected by the pulsar wind nebula and inverse Compton scattering with interstellar radiation fields. We find the morphologies of the regions inside these halos are characterized …

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation long- baseline neutrino experiment aimed at resolving mass hierarchy and the CP violation puzzle in the neutrino sector. Although neutrinos are the most abundant particles in the universe, their study is challenging due to their extremely low interaction cross sections. DUNE aims to overcome these challenges by sending a beam of muon (anti)neutrinos from Fermilab, located near Chicago, to the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota.
The experiment consists of a near detector (ND) complex at Fermilab, which mea- sures the composition of the unoscillated neutrino beam, and a …

CURCI Student Research
In the summer of 2024, I participated in research under Dr. Wolfgang Kerzendorf, a professor at Michigan State University, and Dr. Joshua Shields, a postdoctoral researcher who works with Dr. Kerzendorf. Dr. Shields developed the open-source code STARDIS, which used photosphere models from databases such as MARCS to generate stellar spectra; within STARDIS, the elemental abundance of these stars can be adjusted. My objective was to use STARDIS to adjust generated spectra and compare the results to observed absorption spectrum from Galactic Center Stars to verify if certain stars contained an abnormal amount of certain heavy elements, such as Scandium. …

Nonlinear optical materials of atomic thickness, such as non-centrosymmetric 2H transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, have a second-order nonlinear susceptibility (χ(2)) whose intensity can be tuned by strain. However, whether χ(2) is enhanced or reduced by tensile strain is a subject of conflicting reports. Here, we grow high-quality MoSe2 monolayers under controlled biaxial strain created by two different substrates and study their linear and nonlinear optical responses with a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. Up to a 15-fold overall enhancement in second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensity is observed from MoSe2 monolayers grown on SiO2 when …

This paper investigates the origin of the γ-ray emission from MGRO J1908+06 in the GeV-TeV energy band. By analyzing the data collected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, and High-Altitude Water Cherenkov, with the addition of spectral data previously reported by LHAASO, a multiwavelength study of the morphological and spectral features of MGRO J1908+06 provides insight into the origin of the γ-ray emission. The mechanism behind the bright TeV emission is studied by constraining the magnetic field strength, the source age, and the distance through detailed broadband modeling. Both spectral shape and …
Measuring The Ion Temperature Of A Plasma Jet Undergoing Instability-Driven Heating, Mario Avila
Measuring The Ion Temperature Of A Plasma Jet Undergoing Instability-Driven Heating, Mario Avila
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Outlined are arrangements to measure the ion temperature of a plasma jet undergoing instabilities and an examination of experiment findings. The jet, formed by puffing a controlled amount of Nitrogen or Argon gas into Embry-Riddle's cylindrical vacuum chamber and then ionizing it via high-voltage electronically switched capacitor banks, is regulated to undergo three distinct instability regimes, stable, current-driven, and pinched (or detached), dependent on the voltage of an externally applied bias field and initial conditions. Ion temperature measurements of plasma are inferred through analysis of the Doppler-broadening observed spectroscopically at relevant wavelengths. To improve measurements, this arrangement implements a unique …
Voltage-Controlled Spintronics And Fundamentals Of Magnetoelectricity In Magnetoelectric Antiferromagnetic Chromia, Syed Qamar Abbas Shah
Voltage-Controlled Spintronics And Fundamentals Of Magnetoelectricity In Magnetoelectric Antiferromagnetic Chromia, Syed Qamar Abbas Shah
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Spintronics, which exploits both the spin and charge of electrons, offers a path to more energy-efficient and functionally enhanced devices compared to traditional CMOS electronics. A significant development in this field is voltage-controlled spintronics, where electric fields manipulate magnetic and spin states without the large power dissipation seen in current-based technologies. Among the materials explored for this purpose, magnetoelectric (ME) antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials show promise for energy-efficient, non-volatile memory technologies. Controlling AFM ordering via voltage application is essential for realizing these devices.
This dissertation focuses on ME AFM materials, specifically chromia (Cr2O3), to advance voltage-controlled spintronics. …

Physics Theses & Dissertations
An energy upgrade design for the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) is under development, using fixed field alternating gradient (FFA) return arcs to recirculate electron beam up to an additional five times through the accelerating structures at CEBAF. A necessary component of any large accelerator is a beam steering and optical correction system. Small environmental changes and system errors can lower beam quality or even shut down the machine; and in pursuit of the scientific mission of JLab, high quality electron beams must be delivered to the experimental halls on a predictable schedule. Correction in the novel FFA arcs …

We design, build, and validate an optical system for generating light beams with complex spatial coherence properties in real time. Beams of this type self-focus and are resistant to turbulence degradation, making them potentially useful in applications such as optical communications. We begin with a general theoretical analysis of our proposed design. Our approach starts by generating a Schell-model (uniformly correlated or shift-invariant) source by spatially filtering incoherent light. We then pass this light through an optical coordinate transformer, which converts the Schell-model source into a nonuniformly correlated field. After the general analysis, we discuss system engineering, including trade-offs among …

Nonlinear Optical Studies Of Complex Materials, Govinda Kharal
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents an in-depth exploration of nonlinear optical investigations into complex material systems, employing second harmonic generation (SHG) and complementary bulk measurement techniques. The first project focuses on surface symmetries and phase transitions in IrTe2. Using SHG and electrical resistance measurements, we systematically investigate temperature-induced symmetry changes and reveal significant shifts in transition temperatures due to thermal cycling. Comparison with bulk X-ray diffraction confirms that these shifts are surface-related, providing a new interpretation of inconsistencies in reported transition temperatures. Our findings emphasize the effectiveness of SHG in capturing subtle surface phenomena, with future directions involving straincontrolled studies to manipulate …

Measurement Of Single Differential Cross Sections, Polarization Observables, And Beam-Spin Asymmetry In Charged Two-Pion Electroproduction Off The Proton, Christopher Andrew Mclauchlin
Theses and Dissertations
Emergent phenomena are described as such due to functional differences in paradigms based on observation scale, one of the most fundamental being the emergence of hadronic structure from bare quarks and gluons, as dictated by the strong interaction. Measurement of charged two-pion electroproduction off the proton with CLAS in run group E1-6 and the extraction of single differential cross sections, polarization observables, and beam-spin asymmetries was performed as a necessary step in illuminating the length scale currently dark to Quantum Chromodynamics within the structure of the proton. Understanding the scale-dependent nature of this hadronic structure is integral to understanding nature …

Theses and Dissertations
Standard Model and General relativity are two pillars of modern physics, and their reconciliation would bring a long-sought harmony in physics along with insights into the secrets of the universe. It is then natural to try and modify these theories by searching for the fundamental symmetry describing our world. In this work, I work on the implication of breaking of Lorentz symmetry and the existence of topological objects called solitons. In chapter 3, I show how a cosmologically generated Lorentz- Violating model has instability issues. I then show how the quantum corrections on Lorentz-Violating models can produce ambiguity in β-function …

Despite the growing number of binary black hole coalescences confidently observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include the effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that have already been identified with searches focusing on …

The density functional theory (DFT) and experimental data presented in this paper refer to the research article “Computational and experimental study on undoped and Er-doped lithium tantalate nano fluorescent probes”. The DFT data contain electronic and optical properties for both LiTaO3 and LiTaO3:Er+3, with Er+3 occupying either Li or Ta sites at 4.167 mol. %. All these properties were calculated at the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) limit. Additionally, electronic information was calculated using the hybrid functional by Heyd, Scuseria, and Ernzerho (HSE06), which accurately predicts the location in energy for all Er-4f orbitals. We also include simulated X-ray near edge …

Symbolic Regression (SR) is a cutting-edge machine learning technique that discovers mathematical expressions representing the underlying patterns in data. Unlike traditional regression, SR explores a wide range of mathematical models, allowing for flexible and interpretable solutions. We utilize PySR, a highly customizable symbolic regression package, which combines genetic programming and modern optimization methods to efficiently search for interpretable equations. PySR balances model complexity with performance by penalizing overly complex expressions while optimizing accuracy. In this thesis, we apply Physics-informed Symbolic Regression through PySR to model the x and t dependence of the flavor isovector combination Hu − d( …

An increasing interest in high quality and high current electron beams necessitates a thorough understanding and prediction of coherent synchrotron radiation effects. The self-interaction of charged particles in a beam undergoing synchrotron motion is a physically significant process that is all too often computationally intensive with very little analytical results to rely on for the general case. The coherent spectrum of this interaction is of utmost importance to the design of free electron lasers (FELs) and an accurate assessment is imperative for their design. Optical Investigation Of A Low-Pressure Plasma In A Superconducting Radio-Frequency Cavity, Zachary A. Caudell
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The state-of-the-art cryomodules for particle accelerators use superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. It is known that accumulation of hydrocarbon impurities reduces the cavity surface work function, decreasing cryomodule performance metrics such as field emission, thermal stability, and accelerating gradients. An in-situ method of plasma processing has recently been developed to clean the cavities and restore cryomodule performance [1]. This study is to understand the properties of the low-pressure plasmas generated in a C100 SRF cavity and ultimately to improve the performance of plasma surface cleaning using optical emission spectroscopy. Using a 500 mm focal length Czerny-Turner monochromator coupled with a photomultiplier …

Measuring Clas12 D(E, E′Π±) Cross Sections For E4nu, Caleb Fogler
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Neutrino experiments need neutrino event generators such as GENIE to simulate neutrino-nucleus (νA) interactions in order to measure neutrino oscillations. We need eA data to validate GENIE. GENIE d(e, e′ ) cross sections do not match data in the pion production region. Further analysis of this region can help constrain GENIE models. The goal of this project was to compare 4.244 GeV CLAS12 d(e, e′π±) cross sections to GENIE predictions. We analyzed data from the Fall 2019 run period of Run Group B (RG-B). We applied particle identification, fiducial, and vertex …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
At Swarthmore College, we began developing an Introductory Physics for Life Sciences (IPLS) course nearly 20 years ago. The electricity, magnetism and optics semester was launched in 2008 and both semesters have been offered regularly since Fall 2015. Two primary goals of this curriculum are (1) to prepare students to effectively use physical models and quantitative reasoning in biological and biomedical contexts, and (2) for students to come to view physics as relevant to the life sciences. To evaluate whether these goals are achieved, we conducted a longitudinal interdisciplinary study assessing students' abilities to use what they learned from IPLS …
