Effects Of Dissipation And Temperature On Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, R. F. Voss, S. M. Faris

Faculty Publications

Measurements of the tunneling rate Γ out of the zero-voltage state for several Nb edge junctions with differing shunt capacitances are described. At zero temperature, increasing the shunt capacitance lowers Γ in agreement with dissipative calculations of the macroscopic-quantum-tunneling rate. As temperature increases, ln[Γ(T)/Γ(0)]∝T2 as recently predicted.

Experimental Study Of Spin-Exchange Effects In Elastic And Ionizing Collisions Of Polarized Electrons With Polarized Hydrogen Atoms, G. D. Fletcher, M. J. Alguard, Timothy J. Gay, V. W. Hughes, P.F. Wainwright, M. S. Lubell, W. Raith May 1985

Experimental Study Of Spin-Exchange Effects In Elastic And Ionizing Collisions Of Polarized Electrons With Polarized Hydrogen Atoms, G. D. Fletcher, M. J. Alguard, Timothy J. Gay, V. W. Hughes, P.F. Wainwright, M. S. Lubell, W. Raith

Timothy J. Gay Publications

Using crossed beams of polarized electrons and polarized hydrogen atoms we have investigated the effect of spin exchange on 90° elastic scattering from 4.4 to 30.3 eV and impact ionization from 14.1 to 197.0 eV. Our results suggest that the range of validity of various theoretical approximation methods is more restricted than had been assumed previously.

Measuring R And D Productivity, Richard A. Pappas, Donald S. Remer May 1985

Measuring R And D Productivity, Richard A. Pappas, Donald S. Remer

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Measuring the productivity of an R&D organization is extremely tricky. Productivity is usually defined as a ratio of an output, like number of cars produced on an assembly line, to an input, like the wages paid the workers. While R&D may have a measurable input, the output is often intangible and difficult to quantify. This is further complicated because the return from an R&D department may not be realized for one or two decades, which means the time lag is much higher than in factory measurements. Furthermore, many researchers believe that this kind of measurement may be counterproductive, since the mere act …

Analysis Of A Rocket-Borne Resonant Scatter System For Measurement Of Atomic Oxygen, Neil B. Myers May 1985

Analysis Of A Rocket-Borne Resonant Scatter System For Measurement Of Atomic Oxygen, Neil B. Myers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A computer model has been developed at Utah State University for interpreting the results of a rocket-borne resonant scatter measurement system using 1304 A radiation. Atomic oxygen densities are obtained from 65 to 140 km from three rocket flights. The resolution of the system is < 0.1 km, and considerable structure has been observed. The variety of shapes exhibited by the three profiles suggest a dynamic nature to atomic oxygen density profiles in the lower ionosphere. Maximum densities between 2.6 x 1011 and 1.2 x 1012 cm-3 were observed at altitudes between 92 and 95 km.

Feasibility Studies Of Conversion Electron Mossbauer Spectroscopy (Cems) Of Iron-Doped Inp, Edward Agyekum May 1985

Feasibility Studies Of Conversion Electron Mossbauer Spectroscopy (Cems) Of Iron-Doped Inp, Edward Agyekum

Physics Theses & Dissertations

An electron detector for conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) has been designed and built. Tests have been performed to study the effects on the electron detector resolution with respect to high anode voltage, He/CH4 gas flow rate, and counting rate. These parameters have been optimized to detect the 7.3 keV conversion electrons emitted following resonant absorption of the 14.4 keV source gamma-rays associated with the Mossbauer effect using 57Fe nuclei. CEMS spectra have been obtained using standard 57Fe enriched and natural iron samples. CEMS spectra and Mossbauer transmission spectra have also been obtained for iron-compensated InP (InP:Fe) …

Origin Of The Peaked Structure In The Conductance Of One-Dimensional Silicon Accumulation Layers, Richard A. Webb, A. Hartstein, J. J. Wainer, A. B. Fowler Apr 1985

Origin Of The Peaked Structure In The Conductance Of One-Dimensional Silicon Accumulation Layers, Richard A. Webb, A. Hartstein, J. J. Wainer, A. B. Fowler

Faculty Publications

We have made extensive studies of the temperature, gate voltage, and electric field dependences of the conductance peaks in small silicon inversion layers in order to distinguish between resonant-tunneling models and a hopping model. We find that many of the peaks are consistent only with a hopping model, whereas some could be consistent with an early resonant-tunneling model. None of our structure is consistent with resonant tunneling if the recent formulation of Stone and Lee is correct.

Problems Of Channel Correlation And Statistical Bias In Photon-Correlation Spectroscopy, Richard C. Haskell, Gary L. Pisciotta Apr 1985

Problems Of Channel Correlation And Statistical Bias In Photon-Correlation Spectroscopy, Richard C. Haskell, Gary L. Pisciotta

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Correlation between channels of the normalized photocount-rate correlation function g(2)(τ) becomes significant at high count rates and leads to a number of data-analysis problems. We derive an expression for channel correlation that is valid for a detector area of arbitrary extent and compare the theoretical predictions with measured values. A data-analysis procedure is demonstrated that employs the theoretical expression for channel correlation and provides a rigorous test of an assumed fitting function. The procedure facilitates the use of the cumulant method in determining the polydispersity of scatterers. An expression for the statistical bias of g(2) …

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Of (Er₀.₈Ho₀.₂)Rh₄B₄, Oran Allan Pringle, Herbert A. Mook, M. Brian Maple Apr 1985

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Of (Er₀.₈Ho₀.₂)Rh₄B₄, Oran Allan Pringle, Herbert A. Mook, M. Brian Maple

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The (Er1-xHox)Rh4B4 pseudoternary alloy system has a minimum in the phase boundary between the superconducting and ferromagnetic phases near x=0.3. This minimum has been identified as due to the competing magnetic anisotropies of Er and Ho. It has also been suggested that there could be a Lifschitz point near the minimum. Using the 30-m SANS camera at the National Center for Small-Angle Scattering Research at ORNL, we have observed a peak in the SANS pattern for (Er 0.8Ho0.2)Rh4B4 at Q=0.065 Å-1. This peak appears for …

Construction And Testing Of A New Atomic Physics Beam Line At The Western Michigan University Accelerator Laboratory, William Andrew Hollerman

Masters Theses

A new beam line containing a differentially-pumped gas cell and charge state analyzing magnet was constructed for the purpose of measuring a wide variety of atomic inner-shell processes, such as excitation, ionization, and charge transfer. The completed system will be able to measure these individual atomic processes using coincidence techniques. Initial testing of the beam line was performed using 40MeV S+7+Ar collisions to determine the effect of the collimating slit size on the measured x-ray cross sections. These measurements showed that the slip size on the measured x-ray cross sections. These measurements showed that the slit size affects …

The Pauli Operator Correction In The Effective Λn Interaction, Jaleh Owliaei Apr 1985

The Pauli Operator Correction In The Effective Λn Interaction, Jaleh Owliaei

Masters Theses

Hypernuclear structure calculations performed for 6ΛLi, 7ΛLi, and 16Λ0 have reproduced the 1Λ=1 levels inferred from the recent (k, Π) reactions. However the 1Λ=0, groundstate of 16Λ0 is overbound by 6 MeV in these calculations, indicating a density dependence in the effective ΛN interaction in the interior of the heavier system. In this work corrections to the 16Λ0 effective interaction are introduced in terms of a Brueckner-Goldstone G-matrix with a modified Pauli operator. The G-matrix of 16Λ0 derived from that of 6ΛLi …

Self-Consistent Phases In Topological Particle Theory, Paul Finkler, C. Edward Jones Mar 1985

Self-Consistent Phases In Topological Particle Theory, Paul Finkler, C. Edward Jones

Paul Finkler Papers

To be a self-contained theory, topological particle theory should explain from the basis of its own stated framework of assumptions (nonlinear self-consistency equations, pole factorization, crossing symmetry, and Hermitian analyticity} all the mathematical properties and numerical values of scattering amplitudes. This paper attempts to move the theory in this direction by showing that the phases of the zero-entropy amplitudes in the theory are, in fact, determined by the above framework of assumptions except for trivial ambiguities that appear to have no physical consequences. This extends previous work on this subject and removes the need for certain extra assumptions. Once the …

Derivation Of Discrete Invariances (T, C, And P) And The Connection Between Spin And Statistics In Topological Particle Theory, C. E. Jones, Paul Finkler

Paul Finkler Papers

For purely hadronic processes, the standard connection between spin and statistics as well as separate invariances under charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal are shown to be consequences of self-consistency in topological particle theory.

Crossover From The O(2) To O(1) Universality Class In Equilibrium Polymerization, Rolfe G. Petschek Mar 1985

Crossover From The O(2) To O(1) Universality Class In Equilibrium Polymerization, Rolfe G. Petschek

Faculty Scholarship

Equilibrium polymerization systems in which directed rings are formed correspond to O(2) vector models of magnetism and ones in which undirected rings form correspond to O(1) models. In this paper it is shown that a system in which polymers tend to form directed rings but there is a finite free energy for misdirected bonds corresponds to an O(2) model with a uniaxial anisotropy which causes it to crossover to an O(1) model.

Antireflecting And Polarizing Transparent Bilayer Coatings On Absorbing Substrates At Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily Feb 1985

Antireflecting And Polarizing Transparent Bilayer Coatings On Absorbing Substrates At Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The condition of zero reflection of p- and s-polarized light by a transparent bilayer on an absorbing substrate is derived in the form |gν(ø,Ni)| ≤ 1, where gν is a function of the angle of incidence ø, the refractive indices Ni(i = 0,1,2,3) of the system, and the polarization state ν (= p or s). As an application, the air-Si3N4-SiO2-Si system is considered at two laser wavelengths λ = 6328 and 3250 Å. The thicknesses of the two films of the bilayer and the …

Schottky-Barrier Profiling Techniques In Semiconductors - Gate Current And Parasitic Resistance Effects, David C. Look Jan 1985

Schottky-Barrier Profiling Techniques In Semiconductors - Gate Current And Parasitic Resistance Effects, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

The theory for obtaining mobility and carrier concentration profiles by the Hall-effect, magnetoresistance, and capacitance-conductance methods is developed in the relaxation-time approximation. This theory is then applied to semiconductors in which a Schottky barrier is used to control a depletion region. Particular emphasis is given to field-effect transistor structures which are ideally suited for geometric magnetoresistance measurements. A unique feature of the present model is the correction for finite gate (Schottky-barrier) current, which can be very important under forward-gate-bias conditions. The ability to use forward-bias makes the near-surface region more accessible. Also, parasitic resistance effects are treated. We apply these …

Qcd Vacuum As A Chromomagnetic Superconductor: Microscopic Physics, V. Parameswaran Nair, C. Rosenzweig Jan 1985

Qcd Vacuum As A Chromomagnetic Superconductor: Microscopic Physics, V. Parameswaran Nair, C. Rosenzweig

Publications and Research

The compactness of the QCD gauge group leads to the existence of chromomagnetic monopole configurations. The interactions of these monopoles are studied using electric-magnetic duality as a guide. It is shown that the gluon-monopole interaction acquires an extra minus sign which tends to destabilize the monopole configurations. A model is presented which exploits this observation. We present a scenario where the monopoles condense, giving chromomagnetic superconductivity, via a first-order phase transition at a scale where the electric and magnetic charges are equal, i.e., α = 1/2 . In this vacuum medium gluons propagate like 1/k4 which is now seen …

Response Of Lithographic Mask Structures To Repetitively Pulsed X-Rays: Thermal Stress Analysis, A. Ballantyne, H.A. Hyman, Clive L. Dym, R.C. Southworth Jan 1985

Response Of Lithographic Mask Structures To Repetitively Pulsed X-Rays: Thermal Stress Analysis, A. Ballantyne, H.A. Hyman, Clive L. Dym, R.C. Southworth

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper examines the effects of thermal loading and time history upon the thermal stresses developed in lithographic mask structures as would be expected under irradiation by intense soft x rays. The objective of this work was to examine the phenomenology of the interaction and to evaluate the limits placed upon mask dosage. The mechanics of mask failure are examined in terms of single pulse and cumulative, or fatigue, effects. A number of prototypical mask structures are investigated, which show that the application of intense pulsed sources to x‐ray lithography does not reduce the potential utility of the techique. However, …

Response Of Lithographic Mask Structures To Repetitively Pulsed X-Rays: Dynamic Response, Clive L. Dym, A. Ballantyne

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper addresses the issue of the dynamic response of thin lithographic mask structures to thermally induced stress fields. In particular, the impact of repetitively pulsed x‐ray sources are examined: the short duration (1–100 nsec) pulses induce large step changes in mask temperatures, which can, in turn, induce a dynamic response. The impact of conductive cooling of the mask is to reduce the repetitively pulsed problem to a series of isolated nearly identical thermal impulses of duration approximately equal to the cooling time. The importance of self‐weight and prestress is examined, and an analysis of the nonlinear dynamic response to …

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Quantitative characterization of the intensity pulsations from an inhomogeneously broadened laser confirm that observed irregular pulsing has its origins in deterministic chaos corresponding to motion on a strange attractor of low fractal dimensionality. The pointwise information dimension and the Grassberger-Procaccia K2 (estimators from below of the fractal dimensionality of the attractor and the Kolmogorov entropy, respectively) have been determined for digitized time series from parameter regions identified qualitatively by power spectra as representing periodic, period-doubled, quasi-periodic, and chaotic behavior. Some amount of chaos seems present for almost all operating conditions.

Laser-Assisted Charge-Transfer Collisions: K++Na, Y. P. Hsu, M. Kimura, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1985

Laser-Assisted Charge-Transfer Collisions: K++Na, Y. P. Hsu, M. Kimura, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A theory has been formulated to characterize charge-transfer collisions in the presence of an external laser field. The molecular-state-expansion method is used to describe the scattering process within the impact-parameter formalism. Electron translation factors are included in the molecular-state expansion so that the scattering wave function satisfies the correct boundary conditions. The theory is applied to the process K++NaK+Na+. In addition, we have made a detailed analysis of laser-assisted charge transfer for low-energy collisions. In this case, a Landau-Zener formula can be derived which shows that the cross section increases with decreasing incident energy. In general the laser coupling is …

Spin-Exchange Cross Sections For Hydrogen-Atomalkali-Metal-Atom Collisions, H. R. Cole, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The pseudopotential molecular-structure method has been used to calculate the X1 and a3 interaction potentials for the alkali-metal-atom hydrogen-atom systems. These potentials were then used in a quantum-mechanical calculation to determine the spin-exchange cross sections in the energy range from 2.5x10-4 eV to 2.5 eV. The cross sections follow the general form Q1/2=a-b lnv. However, abundant structure on the cross sections is present due to orbiting resonances induced by the deeply bound well of the X1 molecular state. The spin-exchange cross sections range from 17x10-16 to 25x10-16 cm2 at room temperature for H(F=1) transferring to H(F=0) in collision with unpolarized …

Interaction Of Electric And Magnetic Charges: Addendum, I. Adawi Jan 1985

Interaction Of Electric And Magnetic Charges: Addendum, I. Adawi

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of a head-on collision between a spherically symmetric electric and magnetic charge is reconsidered. The assumption of the equality of the electric and magnetic forces made earlier is abandoned as it does not follow from the model. It is shown that the rotational angular momentum a charge acquires is determined by the amount of the angular momentum which the charge removes from the field by virtue of its extension. The interaction energy of each charge with the dipole it induces in the other charge is equal to the rotational energy of the charge itself. This results in simple …

Recent advances in experimental spectroscopy offer the promise of yielding much detailed information about molecular potentials and collisional interactions from a study of the light emitted or absorbed in the far wings of atomic lines. However, readily manipulable, accurate theoretical expressions and methods are needed to extract such knowledge. Straightforward formulas, based on the distorted-wave approximation, for the normalized emission intensity in the far wing of a pumped atomic line are given here. By normalizing theoretical spectra with respect to the strength of the atomic line, one obtains a convenient form for the analysis of experimental differential spectra that are …

Satellite Structure In Laser-Assisted Charge-Transfer Cross Sections, Y. P. Hsu, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1985

Satellite Structure In Laser-Assisted Charge-Transfer Cross Sections, Y. P. Hsu, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A six-state coupled-channel calculation has been performed on the laser-assisted charge-transfer collision H++Na+Latin small letter h with stroke. A greatly enhanced charge-transfer cross section is observed for low-energy collisions if the photon energy is matched to the classical satellite frequency. This frequency is determined by the location of an extremum in the difference of potential energies between the laser-pumped initial and final molecular states. The stationary-phase method has been used to reproduce the general features and the magnitude of the cross-section structure. © 1985 The American Physical Society.
