A Study Of The Effect Of An Equal Energy Spectrum Upon Metallic Selenium In Vacuo, George Butler Scott Jul 1939

A Study Of The Effect Of An Equal Energy Spectrum Upon Metallic Selenium In Vacuo, George Butler Scott

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Since little has been found in the literature, on the effect of a actinic properties on the conductivity of metallic selenium and on its spectral response when possessing these properties, it was thought noteworthy to construct several selenium cells having low and medium dark resistances and to study them with a view of seeking some correlation between their conductivity characteristics and their prismatic response in vacuo.

The Propagation Of Ten Meter Radio Waves By Vertical And By Horizontal Dipole Antennas, James William Haddock Jul 1939

The Propagation Of Ten Meter Radio Waves By Vertical And By Horizontal Dipole Antennas, James William Haddock

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Radio communication is made possible by means of energy that travels through space from the transmitter to the receiver in the form of electromagnetic waves. These waves move with the velocity of light and differ from visible light only in wave length or frequency. This radiant energy consists of a magnetic field and of an electrostatic field, at right angles to each other and also at right angles to the direction of propagation. Questions explored in this thesis include: 1. Is there a relation between the amount of reflected radio energy and the angle of polarization. 2. If so, which …

The Tesla Coil, Willard H. Schultz May 1938

The Tesla Coil, Willard H. Schultz

Bachelors’ Theses

The following paper is an attempt to gather together and present in some order a few of the facts concerning the design, theory, and operation of the Tesla Coil. The writer's interest was first directed to the production of high frequency, high potential current by an article appearing on page 594 of the October, 1933 issue of the Popular Mechanics Magazine. Here the construction of a small coil was described. The writer built such a coil and was greatly disappointed with the results obtained from it. As is so frequently the case, this failure only intensified the desire to construct …

Educative Value And Construction Of Laboratory Equipment For Physics, With Emphasis On An Optical Screen, Warren D. Conrad Mar 1937

Educative Value And Construction Of Laboratory Equipment For Physics, With Emphasis On An Optical Screen, Warren D. Conrad

Bachelors’ Theses

In the preparation of this thesis the writer has constantly kept in mind three distinct purposes: a) to show the place and importance of the lecture-demonstration in the teaching of physics; b) to provide the teacher of physics in the small high school a means whereby he may equip a laboratory at the smallest possible cost; and c) to describe in detail the construction of an optical screen for purposes of demonstration, indicating what can be done. in the building of home-made physics apparatus.

A Short Study Of Laplace's Equation, Sidney Teweles Jr. Feb 1936

A Short Study Of Laplace's Equation, Sidney Teweles Jr.

Bachelors’ Theses

Perhaps if I set forth my original inspiration for this thesis, the reader will be better able to understand the reason for the apparent limitations of treatment. In my study of differential equations, I had the task set before me of presenting a discussion of Laplace's equation to the class. A seemingly easy matter turned out to be quite difficult for the reason that most texts make but brief use of Laplace's equation. Thus in a mathematics book reference will be made to Laplace's equation simply as example of a mathematical process. Some of these processes are the change of …

Piezo-Electricity, Glen S. Sunderland Apr 1933

Piezo-Electricity, Glen S. Sunderland

Bachelors’ Theses

The term "piezo" was derived from the Greek word "piezein", meaning "to press".

Piezo-electricity relates to the peculiar electric effect of pres.sure on some. crystals. The particular crystals evincing this phenomenon are of the class of hemihedral or hemimorphous, possessing the asymmetric arrangement of either the atoms or molecules.

A Study Of The Acoustics Of Some Stockton Auditoriums And Rooms, Glen Halik Jan 1933

A Study Of The Acoustics Of Some Stockton Auditoriums And Rooms, Glen Halik

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Though the original purpose of this thesis was to investigate the cause for criticisms of the acoustical properties of the College Auditorium, it has been enlarged to a study of other Stockton Auditoriums and rooms with the idea of securing a technique of acoustical analysis similar to that of acoustical engineers in the industries. It was planned at first to set up an oscillator and reverberation meter, but it was found that the apparatus expense would be quite prohibitive. This research was therefore confined to noise meter measurements and reverberation calculations, and includes much of architectural and engineering branches. However, …

Dielectric Constant Of Absorbed Water, Reiji Funabiki Jan 1932

Dielectric Constant Of Absorbed Water, Reiji Funabiki

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

That the dielectric constant of a substance is one of its important properties is a fact that has been very commonly taken into consideration by electrical engineers in design of apparatus and transmission lines. The importance of the dielectric constant is equally evident to the chemist working in the field of nonaqueous solutions, and Walden and others have spent a great deal of time and energy in attempting to measure the relationship of the dielectric constant of a solvent to its solvent ability, the degree of ionization of a solute dissolved in it, etc. Indeed it has become very common …

Radio And A Public Address System For The High School, Kenneth H. Westlake

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

All the findings and knowledge of electricity and magnetism are not new; even the Greeks as far back as 600 B. C. knew something about these forces. As time went on the facts increased.

After the experiments of Faraday, Maxwell, Hertz and such men as these, electricity and magnetism became a vital part of human life and endeavor. Within the last twenty-five years the advances in electricity have been very rapid. The action of the electric current is a vital part of many developments and is helping to make human life more enjoyable and interesting.

Almost all schools today are …

A Study Of An Objective Placement Examination For Sectioning College Physics Classes, John Milton Willson

Masters Theses

"For several years the Department of Physics of the Missouri School of Mines has practiced sectioning of its classes in general physics. The aim has been to segregate in one section the students of superior ability, giving them a course including both the fundamentals of physics and their applications in engineering. The remainder are given a course in fundamentals without placing so much stress upon the applications...Another criterion used to supplement the first-year grade record is the student's score on the Iowa Placement Examinations. The physics examination consists of two parts, the Training Series and the Aptitude Series. These examinations …

Studies In The Magnetic Rotation Of The Plane Of Polarized Light, Charles J. Glass Jun 1930

Studies In The Magnetic Rotation Of The Plane Of Polarized Light, Charles J. Glass

Bachelors’ Theses

As an introduction to the phenomenon of magnetic rotation it is well to offer a brief explanation of the phenomenon of optical activity. According to the ’’wave theory” of light the rays from any ordinary light vibrate in every conceivable plane. If the light is reflected from a glass surface or passed through a Nicol prism it undergoes a change. If an attempt is made to pass the beam through a second Nicol prism is found that the optical axes of the two prisms must be parallel to one another or the beam will not penetrate the second one.

Faraday's Laws Of Electrolysis, M. Aquinas Dec 1929

Faraday's Laws Of Electrolysis, M. Aquinas

Bachelors’ Theses

Physics has no equal, perhaps, in bringing the student to an appreciation of the beauty, the order and the harmony or the universe, and thus drawing the heart and the mind to God whose unbounded powers executed the eternal and marvelous wonders that are all about us.

It is intensely fascinating to take peeps into the "laboratories of God" and wonder what will be the next secret that He will let man in on. It seems as the ages roll by He gradually allows us to share more and more in His secrets or nature; He appears to be slowly …

Studies In The Magnetic Rotation Of The Plane Of Polarized Light, Richard J. Stollenwerk, Clifford R. Haymaker Jun 1929

Studies In The Magnetic Rotation Of The Plane Of Polarized Light, Richard J. Stollenwerk, Clifford R. Haymaker

Bachelors’ Theses

Before entering upon a discussion of the historical development of the subject of magnetic rotation, it may be well to explain briefly the nature of the phenomenon under investigation. According to the wave theory of light, the rays from any ordinary light source vibrate in every conceivable plane. If now the light is reflected from a glass surface or passed through a Nicol prism, it undergoes a change. If an attempt is made to pass the beam through a second Nicol prism, it is found that the optical axes of the two prisms must be parallel to one another or …

Theories Of Color And Color Vision, M. Regina Wallesch Aug 1928

Theories Of Color And Color Vision, M. Regina Wallesch

Bachelors’ Theses

Theories of color have occupied the human mind since an early date even to the present. According to Professor Frank Allen there are from sixty to seventy different theories. Plato considered color to be due to flame-like particles projected from the pores of matter into the eye. Aristotle thought colors arose from various combinations of white and black.

A Study Of The Temperature Behavior Of Various Liquids When Subjected To Pressures Ranging Between One And One Hundred Pounds Absolute, Jerome John Van De Kamp Jun 1928

A Study Of The Temperature Behavior Of Various Liquids When Subjected To Pressures Ranging Between One And One Hundred Pounds Absolute, Jerome John Van De Kamp

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is submitted as a partial requirement for the degree of bachelor of science. The problem is one which dates back as far as the science which claims its authorship. It is a problem of which very little is known and one is justified in calling this old problem a youthful one, youthful, of course, in the sense that it is immature and as yet undeveloped. The problem by the very fact that it is in its infancy makes it one of Infinite length. It is a problem which has no greater practical application. Its ultimate value extends into …

A Method Of Measuring The Velocity Of Gravitation, Percy Martin Roope Jun 1927

A Method Of Measuring The Velocity Of Gravitation, Percy Martin Roope

Historical Dissertations & Theses

For many years the velocity of gravitation, or more properly, the velocity of propagation of gravitational potential, has been the subject of much theoretical discussion. The magnitude of this velocity according to proposed theories varies from the velocity of light to infinity. According to the theory of relativity, the velocity of gravitation should be equal to that of light, and the success which experimental tests of the theory have met justify this assumption. No previous work has been done, however, which would form the basis of a direct measurement. During the past three years, experiments relating to the velocity of …

March 16, 1926: The First Liquid-Propellant Rocket Launch

A newly digitized scan of Robert Goddard's 1926 diary, the year he achieved the world's first liquid-fuel rocket launch. Goddard kept one diary for each year, from 1898 until his death in 1945. Transcriptions of key dates can be found in the section of The Papers of Robert H. Goddard titled '1925-1930: Liquid Propellant Rockets Fly'.

Please note that this is a daily diary, which only leaves a few lines to write about each day. Goddard wrote at more length about March 16th on March 17th but wrote that extra writing in a 'Memoranda' section towards the end of …

A Study Of Light Metals And Alloys At Low Temperatures, Donald E. Higgins Jun 1924

A Study Of Light Metals And Alloys At Low Temperatures, Donald E. Higgins

Historical Dissertations & Theses

Although the determination of the strength of metals and alloys at ordinary temperatures is an everyday matter, very little work has been done to determine their strength and elasticity at very low temperatures. Mallock and Schaefer have investigated certain metals at the temperature of liquid air, and have deduced formulae to express the relation between elasticity and temperature, while Andrade has given an expression for the flow of metals under large constant stress. This work was intended in part to find out if their formulae would apply to the very light alloys used here. Another object was to find, if …

Alternating-Current Resistance And Inductance Of Single Layer Coils, Clarence N. Hickman Dec 1923

Alternating-Current Resistance And Inductance Of Single Layer Coils, Clarence N. Hickman

Historical Dissertations & Theses

An integral equation method is used to develop formulas for the alternating-current resistance and inductance of a system of parallel "go and return" circuits. It is shown how these formulas may be applied to single-layer coils. The formulas are applied to several coils in which the "skin effect" is quite pronounced. These coils are measured at several frequencies and the results compared with the computed values. The methods of measurements are explained and a discussion is given pertaining to the distribution of the effective resistance in a coil. The eddy current losses due to dead ends are measured and discussed. …

An Experimental Study Of The Cathode Fall In Helium And Argon With Wire Cathodes, L. G. Raub Jan 1921

An Experimental Study Of The Cathode Fall In Helium And Argon With Wire Cathodes, L. G. Raub

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

It was recognized rather early in the study of the phenomena of discharge of electricity through gases that the ordinary laws of conduction as found in solid and liquid conductors are not applicable to gases. It was shown by Zeleny and independently by Child that Ohm's law by no means represents the distribution of potential between electrodes in an ionized gas, but that the potential gradient is large in the vicinity of the electrodes, and not uniform throughout the space between them. When the pressure of the gas surrounding the electrodes is reduced to one or two millimeters and a …

The Graphical Representation Of Magnetic Theories, Harold N. Allen Jan 1904

The Graphical Representation Of Magnetic Theories, Harold N. Allen

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The induction theory of magnetism, introduced by Faraday, is now looked upon by all physicists as correct. The older theory which assumes the existence of magnetic fluids covering the ends of the magnet is in some cases mathematically simpler, and is for this reason often made use of. This, however, is apt to breed confusion as to the true nature of the induction or polarization in any given case. The difficulty Tyndall experienced in accepting Faraday's views as to diamagnetism, is accounted for by the fact that he was thinking in terms of the fluid theory, while Faraday was considering …
