Cation Production And Reactions Induced By Electron Impact On Tetraethoxysilane, Jeremy C. Holtgrave Dec 1992

Cation Production And Reactions Induced By Electron Impact On Tetraethoxysilane, Jeremy C. Holtgrave

Theses and Dissertations

The production of cations by electron impact on tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) is studied with a Fourier Transform mass spectrometer (FTMS). The operating principles of FTMS are reviewed and the experimental approach to the mass calibration and cross-section measurement is discussed. The cross-sections for total and partial ionization of Si(OC2H5)4 from threshold to 50 eV are measured. Also, the ion chemistry resulting from interactions between ions and neutral TEOS is examined.

Laser Phase Front Measurements Using A Phase Conjugate Twyman-Green Interferometer, William J. Mandeville Dec 1992

Laser Phase Front Measurements Using A Phase Conjugate Twyman-Green Interferometer, William J. Mandeville

Theses and Dissertations

This study demonstrated the use of a phase conjugate TwymanGreen interferometer for measuring the phase fronts of beams emitted by infrared diode lasers operating at 830 nm. This interferometer successfully measured the phase front of a single element diode laser, providing better resolution than its conventional counterpart. The phase conjugate mirror compensated for aberrations introduced by imperfect optics in the phase conjugating arm of the interferometer. This interferometer was unable to measure the phase front of a diode array due to the array's inability to create a phase conjugate return. The array's short coherence length is believed to be the …

Collisional Detachment Of Anions Using Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry, Kevin B. Riehl Dec 1992

Collisional Detachment Of Anions Using Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry, Kevin B. Riehl

Theses and Dissertations

Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry (FTMS) is used to make energy resolved ion-neutral reaction measurements at high translational energies (up to several hundred eV). The technique is demonstrated for collisional detachment of anions, and should be easily applied to other inelastic reactions. Collisional detachment cross sections of iodine anions onto gas phase targets of neon, xenon, and trifluoromethyl iodide are measured for 1-300 eV (lab frame). Peak detachment cross sections are roughly 2, 8.5, and 7 Å2, respectively. Ion kinetic measurements show the iodine anion is unreactive in trifluoromethyl iodide at thermal energies. Positive ion chemistry is consistent with …

Modeling Sio Maser Emission From Late-Type Stars, Philip B. Lockett, Moshe Elitzur Nov 1992

Modeling Sio Maser Emission From Late-Type Stars, Philip B. Lockett, Moshe Elitzur

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We have performed a thorough study of both radiative and collisional pumping of the SiO masers around late-type stars, carefully considering the combined and separate actions of each type of pump in order to gauge its effectiveness. We find that collisional pumping is severely underestimated when the model calculations use a small number (less than about 18) of rotational levels in each vibrational state. We have developed a procedure that corrects this problem and gives results that are nearly independent of the number of levels utilized in the calculations. We recognize, but do not solve, an important problem that afflicts …

Non-Relativistic Qcd For Heavy Quark Systems, Simon Catterall, F. R. Devlin, I. T. Drummond, R. R. Horgan, A. D. Simpson Nov 1992

Non-Relativistic Qcd For Heavy Quark Systems, Simon Catterall, F. R. Devlin, I. T. Drummond, R. R. Horgan, A. D. Simpson

Physics - All Scholarship

We employ a nonrelativistic version of QCD (NRQCD) to study heavy quark-antiquark bound states in the lowest approximation without fine structure. We use gluon configurations on a 16^3 by 48 lattice at beta=6.2 from the UKQCD collaboration. For quark masses in the vicinity of the b we obtain bound state masses for S, P and both types of D wave. We also detect signals for two types of hybrids (quark, antiquark, gluon states). The results are sufficiently accurate to confirm that the values of the D wave mass from both lattice D waves coincide indicating that the cubical invariance of the lattice …

Dielectric Properties And Ferroelectricity In Main-Chain Nematic Polymers, Eugene Terentjev, Rolfe G. Petschek Nov 1992

Dielectric Properties And Ferroelectricity In Main-Chain Nematic Polymers, Eugene Terentjev, Rolfe G. Petschek

Faculty Scholarship

The longitudinal dielectric susceptibility of a polar (directed) thermotropic main-chain nematic polymer is derived in the mean-field approximation, accounting for long-range interaction forces and the local-field effects in the media. It is shown that this susceptibility exponentially increases for some range of orientational order and then either diverges or saturates at some characteristic degree of order. This is expected in some circumstances to result in a true ferroelectric phase. A simple calculation of this transition is given, assuming that long-range dipolar interactions are the only relevant polar interactions. Other relevant effects and the limitations of our approximation are discussed briefly.

Characterization Of Boron Carbide Thin Films Fabricated By Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition From Boranes, Sunwoo Lee, John Mazurowski, G. Ramseyer, Peter A. Dowben Nov 1992

Characterization Of Boron Carbide Thin Films Fabricated By Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition From Boranes, Sunwoo Lee, John Mazurowski, G. Ramseyer, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We have fabricated boron carbide thin films on Si(111) and other substrates by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition (PECVD). The PECVD of boron carbides from nido-cage boranes, specially nido-pentaborane(9) (B5H9), and methane ( CH4) is demonstrated. The band gap is closely correlated with the boron to carbon ratio and can range from 0.77 to 1.80 eV and is consistent with the thermal activation barrier of 1.25 eV for conductivity. We have made boron carbide by PECVD from pentaborane and methane that is sufficiently isotropic to obtain resistivities as large as 1010 Ω cm …

Classical Description And Calculation Of Ionization In Collisions Of 100 Ev Electrons And Positrons With He And H2, D. R. Schultz, L. Meng, Ronald E. Olson Nov 1992

Classical Description And Calculation Of Ionization In Collisions Of 100 Ev Electrons And Positrons With He And H2, D. R. Schultz, L. Meng, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to explore the range of applicability of the classical trajectory Monte Carlo technique concerning the phenomena associated with light-particle impact of atoms and molecules we present calculations of the singly and doubly differential cross sections for 100 eV electron and positron impact of He and H2 Through comparison with experimental measurements it is noted in what regimes of ejection energy and angle the classical model describes reasonably the process of ionization by electrons. We find that reasonable agreement is obtained regarding the integrated (singly differential and total) cross sections while the features of the doubly differential cross …

Novel Results For Quasiclassical Linear Transport In Metallic Multilayers, Horacio E. Camblong Nov 1992

Novel Results For Quasiclassical Linear Transport In Metallic Multilayers, Horacio E. Camblong

Physics and Astronomy

We analyze the linear transport behavior of metallic multilayers via the Kubo formula for a Hamiltonian with zero-range spin-dependent potentials. We find a direct connection between the Boltzmann and the Kubo approaches. Our two-point transport theory validates the quasiclassical approach for multilayered structures and introduces a new treatment of interfaces via angle-dependent coherent transmission coefficients.

Exact Enumeration And Scaling For Fragmentation Of Percolation Clusters, Boyd F. Edwards, M. F. Gyure, M. V. Ferer Nov 1992

Exact Enumeration And Scaling For Fragmentation Of Percolation Clusters, Boyd F. Edwards, M. F. Gyure, M. V. Ferer

All Physics Faculty Publications

The fragmentation properties of percolation clusters yield information about their structure. Monte Carlo simulations and exact cluster enumeration for a square bond lattice and exact calculations for the Bethe lattice are used to study the fragmentation probability as(p) of clusters of mass s at an occupation probability p and the likelihood bs′s(p) that fragmentation of an s cluster will result in a daughter cluster of mass s′. Evidence is presented to support the scaling laws as(pc)∼s and bs′s(pc)=s-φg(s′/s), with φ=2-σ given by the standard cluster-number scaling …

A Technique For The Evaluation Of Double Excitation Of Atoms By Fast Protons And Antiprotons, Jack C. Straton, James H. Mcguire, Zheng Chen Nov 1992

A Technique For The Evaluation Of Double Excitation Of Atoms By Fast Protons And Antiprotons, Jack C. Straton, James H. Mcguire, Zheng Chen

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A technique for evaluating cross sections for two-electron excitation in collisions of atoms with fast particles of charge ZP is presented. The atomic wave function is approximated by a sum of pair products of one-electron wave functions, with the coefficients chosen by diagonalizing the fully correlated twoelectron Hamiltonian. Thus spatial correlation is included in both the asymptotic and scattering regions by using these configuration-interaction (Cl) wave functions for initial, intermediate, and final states. Use of CI wave function also allows the first-order contributions to be expressed in closed, analytical form. Both the energy-conserving and energy-nonconserving parts of the second-order amplitude …

Quantitative Measurement Of Pyrolysis And Combustion Species Concentration By Molecular-Beam-Sampling-Mass-Spectrometry, Xian Zhong Oct 1992

Quantitative Measurement Of Pyrolysis And Combustion Species Concentration By Molecular-Beam-Sampling-Mass-Spectrometry, Xian Zhong

Theses

A molecular-beam-sampling apparatus utilizing both a time-of-flight mass spectrometer with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization and a quadrupole mass spectrometer with electron impact ionization is described. These systems are used to analyze reactants and products, as well as reactive intermediates, from flow tube experiments at reduced pressures and elevated temperatures. It is shown that the quadrupole signal sensitivity can be predicted using literature cross sections which are based upon the atom hybridization within the various molecules. Measurements of the VUV photoionization sensitivity for stable species led to development of a group additivity approach to predict cross sections. This approach was extended …

A Theoretical Study Of The Subband Structures And Tunneling In Polytype Heterostructures, Hong Chen Oct 1992

A Theoretical Study Of The Subband Structures And Tunneling In Polytype Heterostructures, Hong Chen

Theses

A theoretical study of the electronic and optical properties in polytype heterostructures is presented in this thesis.

In the first part of the thesis (Chap. 2 and Chap. 3), an explicit expression for calculating the subband structure and tunneling is formulated by the incorporation of the envelope function approximations and the transfer matrix technique. It is based on the k*p theory as done to date, but contains two significant improvements: a more realistic treatment of the spatial and energetic dependance of effective masses and band edges; the availability of the calculations, in favor of direct numerical evaluation, to various quantum …

Use Of Raman Spectroscopy In Characterizing Soft X-Ray Multilayers: Tools In Understanding Structure And Interfaces, Ming Cai, Qi Wang, David D. Allred, Larry V. Knight, Dorian M. Hatch, A. Reyes-Mena, Guizhong Zhang Oct 1992

Use Of Raman Spectroscopy In Characterizing Soft X-Ray Multilayers: Tools In Understanding Structure And Interfaces, Ming Cai, Qi Wang, David D. Allred, Larry V. Knight, Dorian M. Hatch, A. Reyes-Mena, Guizhong Zhang

Faculty Publications

Our group is studying the structure and interfaces of soft x-ray multilayers by various techniques including x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy is particularly useful since it is sensitive to the identity of individual bonds and thus can potentially characterize the abruptness of interfaces in multilayers. Blocking interfacial mixing is very important in achieving and maintaining high reflectivity. We report our studies of the as-deposited and postannealed structure of Mo/Si and W/C multilayers. The Mo/Si system is probably the most widely studied multilayer currently because of its potential applications for soft x-ray projection lithography for the range of 13 …

Line Emission From C⁶⁺, O8+ + Li Electron Capture Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, J. Pascale, R. Hoekstra Oct 1992

Line Emission From C⁶⁺, O8+ + Li Electron Capture Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, J. Pascale, R. Hoekstra

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electron capture cross sections to nl sublevels have been calculated for 1-10keVu−1 collisions of C6+ and O8+ projectiles on a Li target. The classical trajectory Monte Carlo method has been employed with the initial phase distributions for the Li(2s) target obtained from Hartree-Fock calculations. The cross sections are found to maximize at π = 7 for C6+ and n = 8−9 for O8+. The nl cross sections were used to calculate Δ n = 1 line emission cross sections. Comparison of these cross sections with the experimental results of Wolfruni et al indïoitçs good …

Symmetry Breaking In A Generalized Skyrme Model, Joseph Schechter Oct 1992

Symmetry Breaking In A Generalized Skyrme Model, Joseph Schechter

Physics - All Scholarship

We first outline the calculations of the neutron-proton mass difference and of the axial singlet matrix element (relevant to the "proton spin" puzzle) in a generalized Skyrme model of pseudoscalars and vectors. These two calculations are, perhaps surprisingly, linked to each other and furthermore are sensitive to some fine details of symmetry breaking in the effective meson Lagrangian. This provides a motivation for us to examine these symmetry breaking terms more closely. We find a qualitatively new feature in the symmetry breaking pattern of the vector meson system and discuss its significance. (Talk at Workshop on "Baryons as Skyrme Solitons," …

Effective Hadron Dynamics: From Meson Masses To The Proton Spin Puzzle, Joseph Schechter, A Subbaraman, H. Weigel Oct 1992

Effective Hadron Dynamics: From Meson Masses To The Proton Spin Puzzle, Joseph Schechter, A Subbaraman, H. Weigel

Physics - All Scholarship

We construct a three flavor chiral Lagrangian of pseudoscalars and vectors with special emphasis on the symmetry breaking terms. Comparing tree level two and three point functions with experiment allows us to first, fix the parameters of the model (including the light quark mass ratios) and second, to predict m(K^{*+})-m(K^{*\circ}),\, \Gamma(K^*\rightarrow K\pi) and \Gamma(\phi\rightarrow K {\overline K}). The last mentioned quantities come out reasonably well, in contrast to an ``ordinary" SU(3) treatment. For this purpose we need ``second order" symmetry breakers involving the vector fields analogous to those needed for the chiral perturbation theory program with only pseudoscalars. An improved …

Hydrodynamic Instability Of Chemical Waves, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards Oct 1992

Hydrodynamic Instability Of Chemical Waves, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

We present a theory for the transition to convection for flat chemical wave fronts propagating upward. The theory is based on the hydrodynamic equations and the one‐variable reaction‐diffusion equation that describes the chemical front for the iodate–arsenous acid reaction. The reaction term involves the reaction rate constants and the chemical composition of the mixture. This allows the discussion of the effects of the different chemical variables on the transition to convection. We have studied perturbations of different wavelengths on an unbounded flat chemical front and found that for wavelengths larger than a critical wavelength (λ≳λc) the perturbations grow …

State-Selective Capture In Collisions Of Protons With Noble Gases, Michael Schulz, D. M. Blankenship, S. W. Bross, A. D. Gaus, Timothy Gay, W. T. Htwe, John T. Park, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have measured coincidences between neutral H atoms and Lyman-α photons for collisions between 50-keV protons and noble gases as a function of the projectile scattering angle. The coincidences are dominated by capture to the 2p state of the projectile. While the total cross sections depend strongly on the target, the shape of the angular distribution of the differential cross sections was found to depend only weakly on that parameter. The data indicate that electrons are captured predominantly from the outermost shell of the target atom for the collision systems studied here.

The Effect Of Contacts On The Performance Of Electron-Beam Controlled Gaas And Diamond Switches, Michael Kevin Kennedy Oct 1992

The Effect Of Contacts On The Performance Of Electron-Beam Controlled Gaas And Diamond Switches, Michael Kevin Kennedy

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The performance of GaAs and diamond as electron-beam controlled closing and opening switches has been studied. An emphasis has been placed on the effect of contacts on the current-voltage characteristics. The two materials studied were GaAs and diamond. Using the same semi-insulating GaAs wafer as a source of material, a bulk device and a p-i-n device have been fabricated and compared. The asymmetry of the pin diode allows operation at higher voltage because of the ability to suppress the lock-on effect. Whereas GaAs was ionized through cathodoluminescence; diamond, in the form of thin films, has been directly ionized by the …

Shifted X-Ray Photoelectron Peak In Molecular-Beam Epitaxial Gaas Grown At 200 Degrees C, David C. Look, J. T. Grant, J. R. Sizelove Sep 1992

Shifted X-Ray Photoelectron Peak In Molecular-Beam Epitaxial Gaas Grown At 200 Degrees C, David C. Look, J. T. Grant, J. R. Sizelove

Physics Faculty Publications

X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopic results show that molecular beam epitaxial GaAs grown at 200 °C has a reduced effective surface potential energy, about 0.5 eV, compared with the usual 0.7 eV. A Poisson analysis of the data, using parameters from Hall effect and absorption measurements, requires that the Fermi‐level‐controlling defect in this material must have a significantly lower activation energy than that of EL2, an unexpected result.

Absolute Triple Differential Cross Section For Ionization Of Helium Near Threshold, T. Rösel, Jochen Röder, Leslie S. Frost, Kurt Jung, Hendrik Ehrhardt, Stephenie J. Jones, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Absolute measurements with an accuracy of 22% and theoretical results in a distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) are reported for the triple-differential cross section for 26.6-eV electron-impact ionization of helium. An apparatus is used that allows all scattering angles to be independently varied for both coplanar and noncoplanar geometries. The measurements are compared with a DWBA calculation that includes exchange distortion in the calculation of the distorted waves, as well as with earlier calculations by Crothers [J. Phys. B 19, 463 (1986)] and Pan and Starace [Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 185 (1991)]. Emphasis is placed on understanding the mechanisms for near-threshold …

Construction Of A Lithium Vapor Oven For Electron Capture And Multiple Ionization Experiments, Oliver Woitke Aug 1992

Construction Of A Lithium Vapor Oven For Electron Capture And Multiple Ionization Experiments, Oliver Woitke

Masters Theses

A Li vapor oven, to be used as a source of Li target atoms in electron capture and multiple ionization experiments, was designed and installed in the beamline of the Van de Graaff accelerator at Western Michigan University. The oven was tested using two different projectile beams, protons and He+. The test results indicate that Li evaporated from the oven in the form of a cloud rather than as a jet spray. For He+ colliding with Li it was found that the projectile single-electron loss yield is about three orders of magnitude larger than the single-electron capture yield, as expected …

A Study Of The Transfer Matrix Method For The Classical Statistical Mechanics Of One Dimensional Systems, Dietmar R.A. Johlen Aug 1992

A Study Of The Transfer Matrix Method For The Classical Statistical Mechanics Of One Dimensional Systems, Dietmar R.A. Johlen

Masters Theses

Two formalisms using the transfer matrix technique, the first one by Gupta and Sutherland (1976) and the second one by Guyer and Miller (1979), are investigated and a proof is given for their equivalence.

Furthermore, it is pointed out that previous studies neglected the difficulties that arise from nonhermitian pseudo Hamiltonian. This work proves that the same results are obtained by taking into account the nonhermiticity of the pseudo Hamiltonian.

Thus, the transfer integral technique is extended to nonhermitian pseudo Hamiltonians.

Review: 'Theory Of Dielectric Optical Waveguides,' 2nd Edition, By Dietrich Marcuse, Bradley D. Duncan

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

I suppose I ought to say up front that while preparing this review I often found myself feeling very much like a student evaluating his teacher. After all, it was, in part, the first edition of Dietrich Marcuse's Theory of Dielectric Optical Waveguides (among a handful of other similar texts) from which I first studied the principles of optical waveguide theory under the demanding, yet patient and graceful guidance of Dr. Ahmad Safaai-Jazi. Thus with the utmost respect for a teacher whom I have never met, I shall try to faithfully share my thoughts and feelings regarding the second edition …

Critical Behavior Of Charge Density Waves Below Threshold: Numerical And Scaling Analysis, Alan Middleton, Daniel S. Fisher Jul 1992

Critical Behavior Of Charge Density Waves Below Threshold: Numerical And Scaling Analysis, Alan Middleton, Daniel S. Fisher

Physics - All Scholarship

The critical behavior of pinned charge density waves (CDW's) is studied as the threshold for sliding is approached. Using the Fukuyama-Lee-Rice Hamiltonian with relaxational dynamics, the polarization and linear response are calculated numerically. ... On the irreversible approach to threshold, the response due to avalanches triggered by local instabilities dominates the polarizability, which diverges in one and two dimensions. Characteristic diverging length scales are studied using finite-size scaling of the sample-to-sample variations of the threshold field in finite systems and finite-size effects in the linear polarizability and the irreversible polarization. A dominant diverging correlation length is found which controls the …

Measurement Of The Λ→N+Γ Branching Ratio, William J. Fickinger, D. K. Robinson Jul 1992

Measurement Of The Λ→N+Γ Branching Ratio, William J. Fickinger, D. K. Robinson

Faculty Scholarship

The branching ratio for the Λ weak radiative decay has been measured to be B(Λ→n+γ)/(Λ→anything) =[1.78±0.24(stat)±0.160.14(syst)]×10-3. A low-energy kaon beam was used to produce the Λ hyperons via the reaction K-+p→Λ+π0 at rest. Photons from the signal channel and π0 decay were detected with a NaI(Tl) array. The final spectrum contains 287 events after background subtraction, an order of magnitude more events than from the only previous measurement.

Photoemission data in which the signal from the first atomic layer is well resolved from that of the bulk are used to determine accurately the kinetic-energy dependence of the inelastic-electron mean free path in the alkali metals. At the higher kinetic energies, the data are in very good agreement with the theory of Penn. Below about 10 eV, the mean free path in the heavier alkali metals drops markedly below the theoretical values. This is attributed to electron decay processes involving the unoccupied d bands.

Modification Of The Magnetic Flux-Line Interaction At A Superconductor's Surface, M. Cristina Marchetti Jul 1992

Modification Of The Magnetic Flux-Line Interaction At A Superconductor's Surface, M. Cristina Marchetti

Physics - All Scholarship

The pair interaction between magnetic flux lines in a semi-infinite slab of an anisotropic type-II superconductor in an external field is derived in the London limit. The case where the applied field is normal to the superconductor/vacuum interface is considered. The presence of stray fields near the surface leads to an additional contribution to the repulsive interaction between flux lines that vanishes exponentially with the distance from the interface. The pair interaction is used to obtain the continuum elastic energy of a distorted semi-infinite flux-line array. The presence of the superconductor/vacuum interface yields surface contributions to the compressional and tilt …
