The near edge structure of ISEELS provides a good "fingerprint" …
Convective Instability Of Autocatalytic Reaction Fronts In Vertical Cylinders, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards
Convective Instability Of Autocatalytic Reaction Fronts In Vertical Cylinders, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards
All Physics Faculty Publications
Linear stability analysis predicts that the onset of convection for an ascending autocatalytic reaction front in a vertical cylinder corresponds to a nonaxisymmetric mode. This mode consists of a single convective roll confined to the region near the reaction front, with fluid rising in half of the cylinder and falling in the other half. Experiments show a flat front below the onset of convection and an axisymmetric front well above the onset of convection. New experiments are called for to closely examine the onset of convection in order to test this prediction.

Defect Models In Electron-Irradiated N-Type Gaas, B. Ziebro, Joseph W. Hemsky, David C. Look
Physics Faculty Publications
1 MeV electron irradiation has been performed in degenerate, n‐type (n≂2×1017 cm-3), molecular beam epitaxial GaAs layers, and Hall effect measurements have been carried out during the irradiation in order to get accurate defect production data. The results have been fitted with statistical models, and are most consistent with the usual E1 (EC-0.045 eV) and E2 (EC-0.15 eV) levels being the (-/0) and (0/+) transitions of the As vacancy, respectively. Also, an acceptor well below EC-0.15 eV is produced at a much higher rate than that of E1 and E2.

The problem of the imitation of CP violation in neutron scattering is discussed. The thermal motion of nuclei cannot contribute to symmetry-violating effects. The influence of the nuclear depolarization due to neutron scattering is estimated.
Photoluminescence Study Of Si1-XGeX/Si And Si/Ge Strained Layer Superlattices, Todd D. Steiner
Photoluminescence Study Of Si1-XGeX/Si And Si/Ge Strained Layer Superlattices, Todd D. Steiner
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, there has been interest in obtaining efficient photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence from Si1-xGex/Si or Si/Ge superlattices. In this dissertation, longperiod c/Si superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy at 500°C and annealed post-growth using rapid thermal annealing were investigated using photoluminescence (PL). The as-grown samples have broad PL bands from isoelectronic centers related to Ge complexes as well as sharp near-edge bound exciton lines. The broad PL band was found to be 120 meV below the band gap, after accounting for the effects of confinement of holes. Post-growth annealing resulted in a reduction in …

We have measured relative doubly differential cross sections for electron emission in collisions of 0.6 MeV u−1 Au11+ projectile ions with He, Ne and Ar targets for laboratory electron-detection angles between 17' and 80' and electron energies from 100 eV to well above the classical binary encounter region. The authors observe that, independent of the target Zt, the electron spectra display three characteristic peak-line structures whose energies are nearly invariant with observation angle. These structures are attributed to the diffraction of quasi-free target electrons in the potential of the projectile. © 1992 IOP Publishing Ltd.

We study a quenching reaction occurring at sinks within a spherical cavity and at the cavity surface. One may think of reactions at these two, distinct locations as two, coupled reactive channels. Reactions of the type D* + A-->D + A are studied in the limit of nondilute A, present at both locations, and dilute D, present within the cavity. We use a Monte Carlo algorithm to compute mean rates, pseudo-first-order rates and branching ratios, and compare with results obtained by assuming that the two reactive channels operate in parallel. The ratio of activities of the two channels are …

Absorption measurements at 1.1 and 1.2 μm were used along with the known electron and hole photoionization cross sections for EL2 to determine deep donor (EL2‐like) and acceptor concentrations ND=9.9×1019 and NA=7.9×1018 cm−3, respectively, in a 2‐μm‐thick molecular‐beam epitaxial GaAs layer grown at 200 °C on a 2‐in.‐diam semi‐insulating wafer. Both lateral and depth uniformities of ND over the wafer were excellent as was also the case for the conductivity. Band conduction was negligible compared to hopping conduction at 296 K as evidenced by the lack of a measurable Hall coefficient.

Double Differential Cross Sections For State-Selective Electron Capture By Low-Energy Ar4+ And Ar5+ Ions From He And Ar, Serefettin Yaltkaya
Masters Theses
Doubly differential cross sections, in angle and energy, for state-selective single-electron capture from He and Ar by Ar4+ and Ar5+ ions have been studied experimentally at laboratory impact energies of 25q, 50q, and lOOq eV (q = 4 and 5, where q is the ion charge state) and at laboratory scattering angles between 0° and 5.5°, by means of translational energy spectroscopy. The translational energy-gain spectra show that only a few final states are selectively populated. Final-state transition probabilities were found to depend strongly on the charge state of the projectile ion and the ionization potential of the …

A thin, undoped, molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) GaAs cap layer grown on top of an n‐type conductive layer significantly reduces the free‐electron depletion from the latter. By analyzing electron transfer to surface, interface, and bulk acceptor states in the cap, as a function of cap thickness, we show that either (1) the usual EC−0.7 eV surface states are absent, (2) a dense donor near EC−0.4 eV exists or (3) a high donor interface charge (∼5×1012 cm−2) is present. Any of these conclusions constitutes an important new aspect of low‐temperature MBE GaAs.

Three Dimensional Quantum Gravity Coupled To Ising Matter, Simon Catterall, Ray L. Renken, John B. Kogut
Physics - All Scholarship
We establish the phase diagram of three--dimensional quantum gravity coupled to Ising matter. We find that in the negative curvature phase of the quantum gravity there is no disordered phase for ferromagnetic Ising matter because the coordination number of the sites diverges. In the positive curvature phase of the quantum gravity there is evidence for two spin phases with a first order transition between them.

Prediction Of Paper Color: A Process Simulation Approach, Mayank Chaturvedi
Masters Theses
A simulation model was developed for a dye mixing process and for the prediction of the optical properties of the paper. The model was integrated with the MAPPS (Modular Analysis of Pulp and Paper Systems) simulation software package. The model was validated using dyed handsheets made in a laboratory and dyed paper made on a pilot papermachine. Validation comprised of prediction of the optical properties of the handsheets and the machine-made paper which contained various combinations of three non-fluorescent dyes. Sheet reflectances were predicted at 20 nanometer intervals for discrete light wavelength range of 400 to 700 nanometers and verified …

The authors have measured by laser spectroscopy the energy of interaction between a sodium atom and its images in the walls of a micron-sized cavity. This cavity-QED study is the first direct quantitative test of the Lennard-Jones van der Waals interaction as a function of controlled atom-surface separation and mean-square electric dipole moment.

In this study the instability of droplets and cylindrical jets is investigated. The understanding of these processes has both academic and practical value. Instability of cylindrical jets is theoretically investigated for infinitesimal and finite, but small initial amplitudes (linear and nonlinear stability). For droplets, only linear theory is presented. It is assumed that the capillary force play a dominant role. It is determined that the viscosity exerts a damping effect. In the first section we give an introduction, after which the linear stability theory of cylindrical liquid jets is presented. In the third section the nonlinear jet stability theory is …

Spectral diffusion decay is calculated for a glass modeled by two level systems which are strongly coupled to phonons. The spin-phonon interaction induces an effective spin-spin interaction which dominates the energy scale. We show that spectral diffusion is a property of macroscopic local fields which fluctuate on time scales that are much longer than the spin-phonon relaxation time T1. We assume for the spectral diffusion a Gaussian distribution and derive a self-consistent equation for its variance which is nonlocal in time. At high temperatures, the variance grows linearly with time while at low temperatures, we find strong deviations from simple …

Review: 'Optical Fiber Communications' (2nd Edition), By Gerd Keiser, Bradley D. Duncan
Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications
If first impressions are worth anything (and they usually are), I would have to admit that my first impression of the second edition of Gerd Keiser's now popular text Optical Fiber Communications was quite good. My compliments are hereby extended to the publisher for choosing a rather handsome cover and dust jacket. It stands in strong contrast to the text's first edition, which still ranks as probably the ugliest book I own, with color choices ranging from dull cream and "baby" blue to pale pink! I am now happy to say that this older version has been discretely·retired to the …
Automated Seebeck Measurements Applied To Conducting Ceramics, J. S. Shapiro
Automated Seebeck Measurements Applied To Conducting Ceramics, J. S. Shapiro
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
The Seebeck coefficient (also known as thermopower) is important in the characterization of conducting ceramics because it is very sensitive to the electronic structure. An apparatus was built during the Fall of 1990 and Spring of 1991 which was designed to measure the Seebeck coefficient in small high-resistivity samples in the temperature range from 80 K to 450 K. A reproducible thermocouple-to-sample electrical and thermal contact technique was found to be important to data accuracy but difficult to achieve. The goals of this project were to improve the thermocouple block design to give better thermal and electrical contact with the …

Photoemission data from (110) films of Li, Na, and Rb, in which the signal from the first atomic layer is well resolved, show that the core-hole-screening singularity index is ∼40% larger at the surface than in the bulk for all three metals. This result, which is indicative of the more atomiclike character of metal surface atoms, in general, is particularly large for the alkali metals because their conduction-electron screening is mainly s-like. In addition to quantifying the difference in screening at the surface, the data provide bulk singularity indices of 0.22, 0.16, and 0.14 for Li, Na, and Rb, respectively. …
Anomalous Dipolar Flexoelectric Effect In A Nematic Main-Chain Polymer, Rolfe G. Petschek, Eugene M. Terentjev
Anomalous Dipolar Flexoelectric Effect In A Nematic Main-Chain Polymer, Rolfe G. Petschek, Eugene M. Terentjev
Faculty Scholarship
An anomalously large flexoelectric effect is predicted in the nematic phase of thermotropic main-chain polymers, which have a defined orientation of subsequent monomers bonded on the chain. We identify two different ranges of order parameters. When the persistence length of the chain in the direction parallel to the order parameters is larger than a monomer length but not too long (small order parameter), the longitudinal flexoelectric coefficient f is proportional to this exponentially large persistence length, assuming that the polymers are many persistence lengths long. This result corresponds to the simple estimation that relates flexoelectric coefficients to the Frank elastic …

All known data on the energy distribution of secondary electrons from collisions of protons with atoms and molecules have been reviewed and differential cross sections have been collected. The two experimental methods used to obtain the data are discussed and possible sources of error pointed out. Theoretical treatments are reviewed and several methods of checking the consistency of the data are discussed. Two semiempirical models have been chosen to represent the differential cross sections, and parameters for these models are given which fit the average of the experimental data, subject to known constraints. Recommended values of differential cross sections are …

Scaling Dynamics Of Aerosol Coagulation, B. J. Olivier, C. M. Sorensen, Thomas W. Taylor
Physics Faculty Publications
A combination of static and quasielastic light scattering and the theory of scaling solutions to Smoluchowski's equation was used to determine the absolute coagulation rate K'0 and kernel homogeneity lambda of a coagulating liquid-drop aerosol. Droplet sizes ranged from 0.23 to 0.42-mu-m, implying Knudsen numbers in the range 0.26 and 0.14. The temporal evolution of the number concentration M0 and the modal radius r(M) of an assumed zeroth-order log-normal distribution showed near-power-law behavior similar to that predicted by the scaling theory. From the temporal scaling behavior of M0(t) and r(M)(t), the absolute coagulation rate was calculated. The coagulation rates from …

Single And Double Ionization Of Helium By Highly Charged Sulfur Ions, Karen M. Lifrieri
Single And Double Ionization Of Helium By Highly Charged Sulfur Ions, Karen M. Lifrieri
Masters Theses
Single and double ionization of helium by highly charged sulfur projectiles is investigated over an energy range of 0.16 to 1.6 MeV/u. Absolute cross sections for the processes of pure ionization, ionization associated with single capture, and ionization associated with single loss by S6,13+ projectiles were experimentally determined and compared with previous results and theories. Ratios of double-tosingle ionization for each outgoing projectile charge state were also determined and compared with theory. The pure ionization ratios for S6+ at the highest energies investigated show the q2/E dependence predicted by Knudsen et al. (1984). For S13+ …

The purpose of this chapter is to review the use of the adiabatic hyperspherical approximation for the quantitative calculation of single- and multiphoton cross sections of two-electron systems. In Section 2 we provide a brief general orientation to the hyperspherical coordinate representation, the adiabatic approximation, and a diabatic approximation for treating strongly avoided crossings between adiabatic potential curves. In Section 3 we review applications to photoionization and photodetachment processes in He, Be, H–, and Ps–. In Section 4 we review applications to multiphoton processes in H–. Finally, in Section 5 we assess the adiabatic …

High-resolution photoemission spectra from the shallow core levels of alkali metals and of In have been obtained between 78 K and room temperature. The data yield values for the alkali-metal surface-atom core-level shift and show thermal shifts of comparable size for bulk and surface. The positive surface shifts are due to the spill-out of conduction-electron charge, which is responsible for the surface dipole layer. The surface shifts are in good agreement with values obtained from a Born-Haber cycle expressed in terms of surface energies. The thermal shifts are proportional to the lattice expansion, and arise from both initial-state and final-state …

Results are presented from ab initio calculations on the ground and several low‐lying excited states of the butadiene radical cation. In particular, we have calculated geometries for the ground and several excited states at the multiconfiguration self‐consistent field level and characterized the planar stationary points. The vertical ionization potentials from the neutral molecule ground state and vertical excitation energies at the computed equilibrium geometry of the cation were also examined. A variety of methods were tested for the calculation of ionization potentials and excitation energies, including multiconfiguration self‐consistent field, multireference singles and doubles configuration interaction (with and without size‐consistency correction), …

Shock Tube Simulation By The Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic (Sph) Method, Luke A. Lorang
Theses and Dissertations
A smooth particle hydrodynamic code (SPHC) is evaluated for performing shock wave simulations by application to 1-D shock tube problems. Results of a shock tube test case with a compression ratio of 10 are compared against a Riemann shock tube problem and theoretical predictions of shock tube behavior to validate the SPH code. A Lagrangian hydrodynamic code is validated in a similar fashion. The resolution capabilities of both codes are compared using 100, 200 and 500 particles for SPHC and 100, 400 and 800 cells for the Lagrangian code. The SPH code exhibits a sharp spike in density at the …

Numerical Analysis Of Plasma Transport In Tandem Volume Magnetic Multicusp Ion Sources, Todd R. Vitko
Theses and Dissertations
A one-dimensional fluid model of plasma transport in tandem volume magnetic multicusp ion sources is explored. The model, the positive ion source code pos, by Glasser and Smith, calculates plasma density, drift velocity, electron temperature, and ion temperature in an ion source. The usefulness of the model is limited: (1) The plasma density trend runs opposite to experimental results, and electron temperatures are an order of magnitude higher than experimentally observed. (2) simplification of the reaction chemistry leads to a plasma balance between ionization and outflow instead of the correct balance between ionization and recombination. (3) Wall losses are …

The development of efficient high speed techniques to recognize, locate, and quantify damage is vitally important for successful automated inspection systems such as ones used for the inspection of undersea pipelines. Two critical problems must be solved to achieve these goals: the reduction of nonuseful information present in the video image and automatic recognition and quantification of extent and location of damage. Artificial neural network processed moire profilometry appears to be a promising technique to accomplish this. Real time video moire techniques have been developed which clearly distinguish damaged and undamaged areas on structures, thus reducing the amount of extraneous …
