The Development Of A Solar Radiation Extinction Correction For Satellite Data, Widad I. Mohamed Jan 1993

The Development Of A Solar Radiation Extinction Correction For Satellite Data, Widad I. Mohamed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main objectives of this thesis are the following: 1) Remove the haze using water surfaces in Landsat satellite imagery of the visible and near-infrared regions for their properties of high absorption of solar radiation and weak reflection of it. The scattered solar radiation is most obvious in dark weakly reflecting regions such as water. The haze removal technique depends on subtraction of scattered light from picture elements within the satellite imagery. 2) Derive a formula and techniques for a given image to correct for extinction by transforming the observed intensity of the signal transmitted to the Landsat detector to …

Measurements Of Recoil Ion Longitudinal Momentum Transfer In Multiply Ionizing Collisions Of Fast Heavy Ions With Multielectron Targets, V. Frohne, S. Cheng, R. Ali, M. Raphaelian, C. L. Cocke, R. (Ronald) E. Olson Jan 1993

Measurements Of Recoil Ion Longitudinal Momentum Transfer In Multiply Ionizing Collisions Of Fast Heavy Ions With Multielectron Targets, V. Frohne, S. Cheng, R. Ali, M. Raphaelian, C. L. Cocke, R. (Ronald) E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The longitudinal momentum transfer to the recoil ion in collisions of 1 MeV/amu bare F ions with Ne are resolved for final charge states of both projectile and recoil ions. We observe the recoil to be thrown backwards in electron-capture events, reflecting the physical impact of the electron translation factor. The size of the momentum transfer is in agreement with classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations for low charge state recoil ions but not for high charge state recoil ions. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

Generation Of Surface Shape From Variable-Resolution Video Moire Contours, Joel H. Blatt, Scott C. Cahall, Bernard Gilbert, Jeffrey A. Hooker, Gary L. Wallace Jan 1993

Generation Of Surface Shape From Variable-Resolution Video Moire Contours, Joel H. Blatt, Scott C. Cahall, Bernard Gilbert, Jeffrey A. Hooker, Gary L. Wallace

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Several methods for generation of three dimensional surface shapes from variable resolution video moire contours are described. In a classical moire system, a physical grating is projected on a target and also used to view the target. The moire contours are generated in the plane of the viewing grating. An unambiguous surface shape can then be computed by processing a set of moire images where the grating, target, or both are moved. By using an interferometer to generate and project variable pitch gratings and video technology to generate the moire contours, a 3-D surface can be scanned at different resolutions …

Real-Time Generation Of Intersection Of Surfaces For Welding By Video Moire, Scott Christian Cahall, Jeffery A. Hooker, Joel H. Blatt Jan 1993

Real-Time Generation Of Intersection Of Surfaces For Welding By Video Moire, Scott Christian Cahall, Jeffery A. Hooker, Joel H. Blatt

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A common problem in fabrication and welding of complex structures is that there is no simple way to determine where to cut one part so that it will fit another part unless both parts designed and built on a CAD/CAM system. Particularly in prototype or retrofit work, cutting and fitting parts for welding is more of an art than a science. We have developed a unique video moire system that generates the intersection contour in near real time with the contour superimposed on a video image of the part, allowing the cut line to be marked while following the contour …

Velocity Dependence Of One- And Two-Electron Processes In Intermediate-Velocity Ar16++He Collisions, W. Wu, J. P. Giese, I. Ben-Itzhak, C. L. Cocke, P. Richard, M. Stockli, R. Ali, H. Schöne, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1993

Velocity Dependence Of One- And Two-Electron Processes In Intermediate-Velocity Ar16++He Collisions, W. Wu, J. P. Giese, I. Ben-Itzhak, C. L. Cocke, P. Richard, M. Stockli, R. Ali, H. Schöne, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report investigations of one- and two-electron processes in the collisions of 0.9-keV/u to 60-keV/u (vp=0.19-1.55 a.u.) Ar16+ ions with He targets. The cross sections for these processes were measured by observing the final charges of the Ar ions and the recoiling target ions in coincidence. The average Q values for the capture channels were determined by measuring the longitudinal momenta of the recoiling target ions. Single capture (SC) is the dominant process and is relatively independent of the projectile energy. The two-electron transfer-ionization (TI) process is the next largest and slowly increases with projectile energy. The Q values …

Direct Measurements Of The Transport Of Nonequilibrium Electrons In Gold Films With Different Crystal Structures, T. Juhasz, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, G. O. Smith, C. Suárez, W. E. Bron Jan 1993

Direct Measurements Of The Transport Of Nonequilibrium Electrons In Gold Films With Different Crystal Structures, T. Juhasz, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, G. O. Smith, C. Suárez, W. E. Bron

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The transport of femtosecond-laser-excited nonequilibrium electrons across polycrystalline and single-crystalline gold films has been investigated through time-of-flight measurements. The thicknesses of the films range from 25 to 400 nm. Ballistic electrons as well as electrons interacting with other electrons and/or with the lattice have been observed. The ballistic component dominates the transport in the thinner films, whereas the interactive transport mechanism is dominant at the upper end of the thickness range. A slower effective velocity of the interactive component is observed in the polycrystalline samples, and is assumed to arise from the presence of grain boundaries. The reflection coefficient of …

Sign Correlations And The Mechanism For Parity Violation, Vladimir Gudkov Jan 1993

Sign Correlations And The Mechanism For Parity Violation, Vladimir Gudkov

Faculty Publications

The problem of possible sign correlations of P-odd effects due to parity mixing on the compound nuclear stage is discussed. For an unambiguous test of the conventional model of parity violation on the compound nuclear stage, it is not enough only to measure the sign correlation of P-odd effects on some resonances, but it is necessary also to know the neutron decay amplitudes for each resonance.

A Model Of Cell Damage In Space Flight, Robert Katz, F. A. Cucinotta, J. W. Wilson, J. L. Shinn, Duc M. Ngo Jan 1993

A Model Of Cell Damage In Space Flight, Robert Katz, F. A. Cucinotta, J. W. Wilson, J. L. Shinn, Duc M. Ngo

Robert Katz Publications

Cell damage by high LET radiations has been described by a phenomenological model (track theory) for 20 years and more. Molecules of biological significance (dry enzymes and viruses) act as 1 hit detectors. Recent additions to the class of I-hit detectors are E. Coli B, and the creation of both single and double strand breaks in SV-40 virus in EO buffer, where indirect effects predominate. The response of cells (survival, transformation, chromosome aberration) to these radiations is typically described by a 4-parameter model whose numerical values are determined by fitting the equations of the theory to experimental data at high …

Absolute-Convective Instabilities And Their Associated Wave Packets In A Compressible Reacting Mixing Layer, F. Q. Hu, T. L. Jackson, D. G. Lasseigne, C. E. Grosch

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper the transition from convective to absolute instability in a reacting compressible mixing layer with finite rate chemistry is examined. The reaction is assumed to be one step, irreversible, and of Arrhenius type. It is shown that absolute instability can exist for moderate heat release without backflow. The effects of the temperature ratio, heat release parameter, Zeldovich number, equivalence ratio, direction of propagation of the disturbances, and the Mach number on the transition value of the velocity ratio are given. The present results are compared to those obtained from the flame sheet model for the temperature using the …

Hysteresis And Anchoring Energy In Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals, Yuri Panarin Jan 1993

Hysteresis And Anchoring Energy In Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals, Yuri Panarin

Articles

The frequency dispersion of the coercive force of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals (FLC) cells has been detected and examined in the range of infralow (lower than 0.1 Hz) frequencies. To clarify the low-frequency dispersion, the model has been suggested, based on the arrangement of free charges and well describing the experimental curves. The method for determination of the energy of FLC anchoring at the surface, developed on the basis of the static hysteresis loop, has been proposed. The dependence of bistability and the anchoring energy upon the orientant layer thickness has experimentally been investigated.

Hydrodynamic Theory Of Multicomponent Diffusion And Thermal Diffusion In Multitemperature Gas Mixtures, John D. Ramshaw Jan 1993

Hydrodynamic Theory Of Multicomponent Diffusion And Thermal Diffusion In Multitemperature Gas Mixtures, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A phenomenological theory is developed for multicomponent diffusion, including thermal diffusion, in gas mixtures in which the components may have different temperatures. The theory is based on the hydrodynamic approach of Maxwell and Stefan, as extended and elaborated by Furry [1] and Williams [2]. The present development further extends these earlier treatments to multiple temperatures and multicomponent thermal diffusion. The resulting diffusion fluxes obey generalized Stefan-Maxwell relations which include the effects of ordinary, forced, pressure, and thermal diffusion. When thermal diffusion is neglected, these relations have the same form as the usual single-temperature ones, except that mole fractions are replaced …

Long Chain Molecules In The Molten State: Surface Adsorption, Near Surface Structure, And Mutual-Diffusion, Xiaofeng Zhao Jan 1993

Long Chain Molecules In The Molten State: Surface Adsorption, Near Surface Structure, And Mutual-Diffusion, Xiaofeng Zhao

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The surface segregation in a binary mixture of polymer due to surface energy difference or end-grafting is studied. The surface energy difference induced segregation is compared with the mean-field theory. The end-labeling of chains strengthens the ability of the chain to bind to the surface, and the stretching of the end grafted chains is proved to be a controlling fact limiting the brush density. The structure of a chain near a surface needs to be known in order to make more quantitative analysis. Such knowledge is currently not available although a reflecting surface model is proposed.

We also studied the …

²H (D,Γ) ⁴He Polarization Observables At 20, 30, And 50 Mev, R. M. Whitton, H. R. Weller, E. Hayward, W. R. Dodge, S. E. Kuhn

Physics Faculty Publications

Tensor and vector analyzing powers for the ²H (d,γ) ⁴He reaction have been obtained as a function of angle at Ed(lab) = 20, 30, and 50 MeV. Differential cross sections were extracted at 30 and 50 MeV. Data for Ayy(θ) and Ay(θ) were obtained at all three energies, while T20(θ) was also measured at Ed(lab) = 50 MeV. A direct capture calculation was performed and compared to the data. This calculation assumes point deuterons and that the reaction proceeds primarily via E2 radiation in this energy region. A value of …

Azimuthal Angular Dependence Of Recoil-Ion And Electron Emission In 0.5-Mev P + He Collisions, R. Dörner, J. Ullrich, Ronald E. Olson, O. Jagutzki, H. Schmidt-Böcking Jan 1993

Azimuthal Angular Dependence Of Recoil-Ion And Electron Emission In 0.5-Mev P + He Collisions, R. Dörner, J. Ullrich, Ronald E. Olson, O. Jagutzki, H. Schmidt-Böcking

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements and n-body classical-trajectory Monte Carlo calculations are presented for the dependence of recoil-ion emission on the azimuthal angle between a projectile and a recoil ion. From the measured momenta of the projectile and the recoil ion, the dependence of the electron emission on the azimuthal angle between projectile and electron is deduced. The recoil ions are found to be emitted to the opposite direction of the scattered projectile only for scattering angles larger than 1 mrad, while for smaller scattering angles, the momentum of the emitted electron results in a broad azimuthal angular distribution of the recoil ions. For …

The spin structure function of the neutron g1n has been determined over the range 0.03 < x < 0.6 at an average Q2 of 2 (GeV/c)2 by measuring the asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized 3He target at energies between 19 and 26 GeV. The integral of the neutron spin structure function is found to be f-10 gn1(x)dx = -0.022 ± 0.011. Earlier reported proton results together with the Bjorken sum rule predict f-10 gn1(x)dx = -0.059 ± 0.019.

Giraud-Héraud, Eugene E. Haller, Andrew E. Lange, Ron R. Ross, J. Rich, Bernard Sadoulet, G. Smith, W. Stockwell, C. Stubbs, N. Wang, S. White, Betty A. Young, D. Yvon

Physics

We report on the first measurement of the absolute phonon energy and the amount of ionization produced by the recoil of nuclei and electrons in a 60 g germanium cyrstal at a temperature of ≊25 mK. We find good agreement between our results and previous measurements of ionization yield from nuclear recoils in germanium. Our device achieves 10:1 discrimination between neutrons and photons in the few keV energy range, demonstrating the feasibility of this technique for large reductions of background in searches for direct interactions of weakly interacting massive particle dark matter.

Physics

We demonstrate simultaneous high energy resolution (rms≊800 eV) measurements of ionization and phonons created by particle interactions in a semiconductor crystal of macroscopic size (60 g germanium) at 25 mK. We present first studies of charge collection at biases below 1 V/cm, and find that, contrary to commonly held opinion, the full recoil energy of particle interactions is recovered as phonons when charge trapping is negligible. We also report an unanticipated correlation between charge collection and phonon energy at very low bias, and discuss this effect in terms of charge trapping.

Translational Correlations In The Vortex Array At The Surface Of A Type-Ii Superconductor, M. Cristina Marchetti, David R. Nelson Dec 1992

Translational Correlations In The Vortex Array At The Surface Of A Type-Ii Superconductor, M. Cristina Marchetti, David R. Nelson

Physics - All Scholarship

We discuss the statistical mechanics of magnetic flux lines in a finite-thickness slab of type-II superconductor. The long wavelength properties of a flux-line liquid in a slab geometry are described by a hydrodynamic free energy that incorporates the boundary conditions on the flux lines at the sample's surface as a surface contribution to the free energy. Bulk and surface weak disorder are modeled via Gaussian impurity potentials. This free energy is used to evaluate the two-dimensional structure factor of the flux-line tips at the sample surface. We find that surface interaction always dominates in determining the decay of translational correlations …

Mott Electron Polarimetry, Timothy James Gay, F. B. Dunning Dec 1992

Mott Electron Polarimetry, Timothy James Gay, F. B. Dunning

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electron polarimeters based on Mott scattering are extensively used in atomic and molecular, solid state, nuclear, and high-energy physics. This use stems from the increasing realization that much additional information concerning many physical processes can be obtained through spin-dependent measurements. In this review we discuss the basic physics and application of Mott polarimetry. A number of different Mott polarimeter designs are described that illustrate the wide range of operating energies (10 eV-1 MeV) and geometries that can be used in such instruments. The calibration of Mott polarimeters is discussed together with the potential sources of systematic error that can arise …

Optical Haar Wavelet Transforms Using Computer Generated Holography, Peter G. Block Dec 1992

Optical Haar Wavelet Transforms Using Computer Generated Holography, Peter G. Block

Theses and Dissertations

This research introduces an optical implementation of the continuous wavelet transform to filter images. The wavelet transform is modeled as a correlation process and is implemented with a Vander Lugt correlator. The orthonormal basis set used is composed of two one-dimensional Haar functions and a two-dimensional Haar function. Each wavelet, as well as its first two dyadic scalings, is implemented with computer generated holography. The Interferogram method, which represents a function only in terms of its phase, is used to encode the wavelet functions. The results are imaged onto a CCD array and captured using a framegrabber. The optical results …

Cathodoluminescence Spectroscopy Of Zinc Germanium Phosphide Zngep2, Michael R. Gregg Dec 1992

Cathodoluminescence Spectroscopy Of Zinc Germanium Phosphide Zngep2, Michael R. Gregg

Theses and Dissertations

Zinc Germanium Phosphide (ZnGeP2) is a nonlinear semiconductor suitable for use as a laser tuning element over the two to six micron wavelength range. Although this crystal has been studied in the past, its luminescent properties are not yet well understood. In this present study, ZnGeP2 has been examined using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (CL). Specifically, the spectral dependence of the CL was obtained as a function of electron beam energy, beam current and temperature. The resulting CL was found to be polarized with a peak structure that was dependent on the polarization. This peak structure observed by CL …

Increasing The Corrected Field Of View Of An Adaptive Optical Telescope, Dustin C. Johnston Dec 1992

Increasing The Corrected Field Of View Of An Adaptive Optical Telescope, Dustin C. Johnston

Theses and Dissertations

Current adaptive optical telescope designs use a single deformable mirror (DM) to compensate for atmospheric distortion. The corrected field of view (FOV) of an adaptive optics system could be increased through the use of multiple DMs optically conjugated to corresponding planes which sample the turbulence region in altitude. Often, the atmospheric turbulence responsible for the degradation of telescope images is concentrated in several layers. Each DM would correct for the component of the total wavefront in the pupil contributed by one or more layers. If the atmosphere does not possess a layered structure, the best fit of the turbulence profile …

Extrapolation Procedures In Mott Electron Polarimetry, Timothy James Gay, M. A. Khakoo, J. A. Brand, J. E. Furst, W. V. Meyer, W. M.K.P. Wijayaratna, F. B. Dunning Dec 1992

Extrapolation Procedures In Mott Electron Polarimetry, Timothy James Gay, M. A. Khakoo, J. A. Brand, J. E. Furst, W. V. Meyer, W. M.K.P. Wijayaratna, F. B. Dunning

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In standard Mott electron polarimetry using thin gold film targets, extrapolation procedures must be used to reduce the experimentally measured asymmetries A to the values they would have for scattering from single atoms. These extrapolations involve the dependence of A on either the gold film thickness t or the maximum detected electron energy loss in the target ΔE. Using a concentric cylindrical-electrode Mott polarimeter, we have studied and compared these two types of extrapolations over the electron energy range 20-100 keV. The potential systematic errors which can result from such procedures are analyzed in detail, particularly with regard to the …

Correction Of Chromatic Aberration With An Electron Mirror, Michael Stewart Mauck Dec 1992

Correction Of Chromatic Aberration With An Electron Mirror, Michael Stewart Mauck

Dissertations and Theses

The theoretical basis for using electron mirrors as correctors of chromatic aberration is presented and an experimental verification of correction of chromatic aberration is demonstrated. A hyperbolic electrostatic electron mirror operating in its converging range and at unity magnification was used as a corrector. A novel separating system with deflections taking place at image planes was developed to implement the mirror without impairing the resolution. Correction was demonstrated in an electron optical probe system. The chromatic aberration was measured by means of the shadows cast by a fine mesh placed near the final image. The experimental method and equipment are …

Design And Characterization Of Optically Pumped Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers, Richard J. Bagnell Dec 1992

Design And Characterization Of Optically Pumped Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers, Richard J. Bagnell

Theses and Dissertations

Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are a form of semiconductor laser which have their cavity oriented orthogonally to the plane of the wafer. The orientation necessitates short cavities, highly reflective mirrors and a relatively high gain/loss ratio. Even so, the resultant superior exit beam characteristics and the tight packing density of the finished lasers provide strong motivation for pursuing the growth of these structures. This thesis details the design of an optically pumped InGaAs multiple quantum well periodic gain structure VCSEL with a 950 nm lasing wavelength. These growths were to be a first attempt at VCSEL construction, so …

Remote Sensing Of Turbulence And Transverse Atmospheric Wind Profiles Using Optical Reference Sources, Steven C. Koeffler Dec 1992

Remote Sensing Of Turbulence And Transverse Atmospheric Wind Profiles Using Optical Reference Sources, Steven C. Koeffler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines a remote sensing technique for measuring the atmospheric structure constant and the transverse atmospheric wind velocity as a function of altitude by performing temporal and spatial correlations of band pass filtered wave front slope sensor measurements. Two point sources are used to illuminate two pairs-of cc>-located wave front slope sensors. The sources and sensors are arranged to give rise to crossed optical paths. For each pair of wave front slope sensors, the output of the larger sensor is subtracted from the output of the smaller sensor. This band pass filters the smaller sensor's output. The filtered …

The Effect Of An Adaptive Optical System's Spatio-Temporal Response On Imaging Performance, Patrick M. Harrington Dec 1992

The Effect Of An Adaptive Optical System's Spatio-Temporal Response On Imaging Performance, Patrick M. Harrington

Theses and Dissertations

Ideally, an adaptive optical control system would have instantaneous temporal response and infinite spatial bandwidth. In real systems, the response time of the adaptive optical control system is limited by the integration time of the wave front sensor, the computational time of the control algorithm, and the actuator response time. Additionally, finite inter actuator spacing limits the deformable mirror's ability to reproduce spatial frequencies having a period less than twice this spacing. Although analyses general enough to account for both the temporal and spatial characteristics of the adaptive optical system exist, they are complex and require detailed information regarding the …

Object Tracking Through Adaptive Correlation, Dennis A. Montera Dec 1992

Object Tracking Through Adaptive Correlation, Dennis A. Montera

Theses and Dissertations

This paper discusses the use of a correlation based system to track, an object through a series of images based on templates derived from previous image frames. The ability to track is extended to sequences which include multiple objects of interest within the field of view. This is accomplishes by comparing the height and shape of the template autocorrelation to the peaks in the correlation of the template with the next scene. The result is to identify the region in the next scene which best matches the designated target. In addition to correlation plane postprocessing, an adaptive window is used …
