Development Of Selected Mathematical Instruments Representing Angular, Logarithmic And Arithmetic Computation, Lillian L. Troxell
Development Of Selected Mathematical Instruments Representing Angular, Logarithmic And Arithmetic Computation, Lillian L. Troxell
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The Sextant in its earliest known form consisted of divided circles and compasses with simply sights. An early Creek astronomer of the second century after Christ, Claudius Ptolemaeus, or more commonly called Ptolemy, wrote a book entitled Megale Syntaxis tes Astron- omias, also known by the Arabic title Almagest. The instrument described in this book was called the Astrolable and was used to measure the angular distance between stars. It was made of two concentric vertical circles, the largest and outer circle was about sixteen inches in diameter with graduated arc; the central ring was movable and carried the two …
A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Binary Mixtures Of Waxes, George John Hable
A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Binary Mixtures Of Waxes, George John Hable
Bachelors’ Theses
Waxes, chemically speaking, are a class of esters which consist of mono- or di-hidric alcohols united with the higher fatty acids. These waxes contain free fatty acids, free alcohols and hydrocarbons. A considerable quantity of free cerotic acid (C26H52O2) myricyl palmitate (C16H31O2. C31H63), and high melting point hydrocarbons are found in beeswax. The acids that occur in waxes appear to have an even number of carbon atoms. Paraffine, ceresine, and ozokerite are really not waxes at all according to the chemical conception. The latter two are esters of glycerine united with higher fatty acids.
Summable Types Of Series, Dorothea Maria Baumann
Summable Types Of Series, Dorothea Maria Baumann
Bachelors’ Theses
By an infinite series we mean a polynomial, or a sequence of terms, each of which derives from its predecessor according to a fixed formula or process; there is a one to one correspondence, consequently between the terms of the series and the set of positive integers 1,2,----,n,----. Summation means the finding of a finite expression equivalent numerically to the given series; known functions only may occur, connected by a fixed number of steps; such a closed expression is called the "sum" of the series.

The Evaporation Of Pyroxylin Solvents And Non-Solvents And The Effect Of Dissolved Pyroxylin On Various Types Of Evaporation Curves, Herbert Heinrich
Bachelors’ Theses
In 1833 Braconnot described a body which he called Xyloidine. This material was obtained by the action of nitric acid on starch. In 1838 Pelonze produced a similar body by treating paper with nitric acid. Although these experiments were conducted several years before those of Soh8nbein, yet we give Schonbein the honor of priority because of bis extensive studies on the new compound "explosive cotton wool". The material was produced by the combined action of nitric and sulphuric acids on cellulose. A patent was granted to him in the United States December 5, 1846, but little attention was paid to …
A Study Of The Preparation And Properties Of Some Metallic Soaps, Charley George Hagan
A Study Of The Preparation And Properties Of Some Metallic Soaps, Charley George Hagan
Bachelors’ Theses
Soap may be defined as the sodium or potassium salt of the acids that are found in fats. The metallic soaps are those soaps or salts of the metallic bases other than sodium or potassium. The Study of the preparation, properties and uses of metallic soaps is rather an old one, most of the research along that line being done during the last quartile of the nineteenth century. Nothing of any importance has been done of late years in this field of research. Nearly all the work has been done by foreign investigators. The metallic soaps of oleic acid are …

March 16, 1926: The First Liquid-Propellant Rocket Launch
Robert Goddard's entry for March 17, 1926, from a newly digitized scan of Goddard's 1926 diary. This entry covers the events of the previous day, March 16, in which he achieved the world's first liquid-fuel rocket launch. Goddard kept one diary for each year, from 1898 until his death in 1945.
This entry is included towards the back of the diary, in the 'Memoranda' section, in order to have the space to fit his recounting of the day. The diary was a daily one and only left a few lines for each day. The transcription is as follows:

Directory Of Certain Alumni The Department Of Geology And Geography The University Of Nebraska, E. F. Schramm
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
In the Department of Geology and Geography, The University of Nebraska, there have been over 10,000 registrants between the years 1891 and 1926. So many inquiries have been received concerning alumni and their addresses that it seems advisable to publish this directory. The list is necessarily incomplete since many of the alumni have not informed the Department respecting their addresses and change of positions. Out of the total number of those who have pursued professional vocations the following have kept in close touch with the Department.
Archidiskodon Maibeni, Erwin H. Barbour
Archidiskodon Maibeni, Erwin H. Barbour
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
Archidiskodon maibeni was first described in Bulletin 10 of the Nebraska State Museum under the title" Skeletal Parts of the Columbian Mammoth, Elephas Maibeni." * Dr. Henry Fairfield Osborn finds it expedient to found a new genus, Archidiskodon, to include the earlier and more primitive mammoths. Hence the change in the generic name. t'Mammoths and modern elephants have long been grouped together under 'the genus Elephas. Subdividing the genus does not necessarily do away with this convenient and rather familiar old arrangement.

An Approximation To The Least Root Of A Cubic Equation With Application To The Determination Of Units In Pure Cubic Fields, T. A. Pierce
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Approximation to the Least Root of a Cubic Bernoulli's method of approximating the largest root of an equation
(1) x3 = ax2 + bx + c,
with real coefficients, is to use (1) as a scale of relation for the recursion formula An = aAn-1 + bAn-2 + cAn-3. Successive A’s are calculated starting from any initial values. Then An+i/An for increasing values of n approximates that root of (1) which has the greatest absolute value if that root is real. The method here given for …
