  1. To determine the apparent proteolytic activity of normal urine from day to day.
  2. To determine the apparent proteolytic activity of a sample of 8-12 hours after emission.
  3. To determine whether the ether extracts of normal urine possess apparent proteolytic activity.
  4. To determine the effect of hyaluronidase on the viscosity of gelatin.

A Comparative Study Of Some Dehydrating And Infiltrating Agents, Albin A. Sheputa Jul 1948

A Comparative Study Of Some Dehydrating And Infiltrating Agents, Albin A. Sheputa

Bachelors’ Theses

During the past two decades methods in biological technique have been constantly improved and perfected. However, the choice of a universally satisfactory dehydrating and infiltrating agent has been much debated and various well known authorities in the field of biological technique have left this problem unsolved to the complete satisfaction of all concerned.

The Influence Of Certain Factors In Urine On The Viscosity Of Gelatin, Leonard Driss Jul 1948

The Influence Of Certain Factors In Urine On The Viscosity Of Gelatin, Leonard Driss

Bachelors’ Theses

After reading the Masters Thesis of Mr. Herman L. Karl, the writer became interested in this problem and then took · up the study of the proteolytic activity of normal urine. Mr. Karl worked on the urine of pregnant women. Using gelatin as a substrate, he hoped to find a difference in proteolytic activity between the urine of a woman pregnant with a male fetus and the urine of a woman pregnant with a female fetus. His results were not conclusive but suggested that the problem of proteolytic action of urine should be studied under normal conditions.

The Possibility Of A Land Bridge Across Nebraska In Mississippian Time, E. C. Reed Jul 1948

The Possibility Of A Land Bridge Across Nebraska In Mississippian Time, E. C. Reed

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The lithologic and paleontologic differences between the Mississippian sediments of the Mid-Continent region and those of the northern Rocky Mountain and Black Hills regions suggest either that the Mississippian seas were not directly continuous between these two regions or that sea connections were greatly restricted. The purpose of this paper is to present and analyze the available subsurface data in Nebraska and surrounding states in the light of this problem. The study is primarily lithologic. Mississippian sediments are known to be widely distributed in the subsurface of much of Iowa and Kansas, in southeastern and extreme southwestern Nebraska, and in …

Mississippian-Pennsylvanian Boundary Problems In The Rocky Mountain Region, James Steele Williams Jul 1948

Mississippian-Pennsylvanian Boundary Problems In The Rocky Mountain Region, James Steele Williams

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A variety of paleontologic and stratigraphic problems are presented by rocks near the Mississippian- Pennsylvanian boundary in the central and northern Rocky Mountains. Stratigraphic sections of these rocks show diverse interpretations of fundamental concepts of stratigraphy and paleontology. In many places where Upper Mississippian rocks directly underlie Pennsylvanian rocks it is difficult to determine the precise location of the boundary between these units. Formations that straddle the boundary are very useful and satisfactory over large areas. Most geologists use various types of lithologic criteria to distinguish formations, but some appear to rely mainly on faunal data, unconformities, or attempts to …

The secondary objective is to decipher stratigraphic correlations between wells. The wells, in San Juan County, are geologically located in the San Juan Basin, a structural basin in the Colorado Plateau. The formations range in age from Paleozoic Cambrian (?) to Cenozoic Recent. The boundaries of the Basin are ill-defined and have shifted throughout the history of the area.

Geology And Geological Structure Of The Alberta And Saskatchewan Plains, William E. Topley Jun 1948

Geology And Geological Structure Of The Alberta And Saskatchewan Plains, William E. Topley

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Alberta, responsible for ninety per cent of Canada's output, had, by 1947 entered into her fifth year of production decline. Only ten per cent of Canada's oil requirements were secured from home fields. Ninety per cent had to be imported, mainly from the United States. How long could imports be maintained on present levels? During the year, the United States had started rationing; in one sector of its domain. Would this become general? If so, what was the answer for Canada?

An Improved Confirmatory Test For Arsenic, Mary Ellen Mckennan Jun 1948

An Improved Confirmatory Test For Arsenic, Mary Ellen Mckennan

Bachelors’ Theses

As any student in freshman chemistry can tell you, many of the tests in qualitative analysis do not work as well as they should. Of course, for a particular student, this may be more his fault than the fault of the test, but in some cases the test itself is to blame. One of these cases is the confirmatory test for arsenic. There is a combination of difficulties which make it hard to detect arsenic by the present method used in qualitative analysis so it is the hope of the author to determine exactly what these difficulties are, find some …

The Synthesis And Physical Properties Of A Few Unsymmetrically Substituted Ethanes, Gerald R. Aldrich Jun 1948

The Synthesis And Physical Properties Of A Few Unsymmetrically Substituted Ethanes, Gerald R. Aldrich

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer's interest was aroused in the synthesis of organic fluorides while taking a course in Organic Preparations. The fact that fluorine chemistry was something relatively recent made the topic especially appealing. While the chloro, bromo, and iodo derivatives of most of the homologous series had been prepared, many of the fluorine compounds had not. Previous research had disclosed the asymmetrical diaryl ethanes possessed peculiar properties - to mention one, fluorescence. It was proposed that a few of the asymmetrical diaryl ethanes having fluorine and chlorine substituted on the ring in various positions with respect to one another be prepared …

The Identification Of Various Alkyl Halides Through Formation Of Quaternary Ammonium Salts, John L. Canning Jun 1948

The Identification Of Various Alkyl Halides Through Formation Of Quaternary Ammonium Salts, John L. Canning

Bachelors’ Theses

Within the field of the characterization of organic compounds the preparation of suitable derivatives of the compound to be identified is the final process of the laboratory analysis. When the unknown is of such chemical nature that the preparation of derivatives is difficult or impossible the identification is not too satisfactory. This is often the case when the unknown is an alkyl halide. At present the identification of many of these compounds depends exclusively upon an examination of the physical constants.

It is the purpose of this paper to investigate the possibility of preparing quaternary ammonium compounds by treating the …

An Investigation Of Sundry Reactions For Application As Confirmatory Tests In Qualitative Analysis, Patricia Ann Lillis Jun 1948

An Investigation Of Sundry Reactions For Application As Confirmatory Tests In Qualitative Analysis, Patricia Ann Lillis

Bachelors’ Theses

Is the present "scheme" of Qualitative analysis satisfactory? For many years the answer has been, No ! In the present ”scheme” it has frequently been necessary to strike a compromise between accuracy and simplicity. One solution to the problem can be found in the availability of a number of specific reagents, one for each substance to be identified, giving unmistakable tests and positive results. It would greater simplify the situation if a single inorganic salt could be used as a reagent for all the metallic ions.

One of the most successful reagents used was potassium mercuric thiocyanate. The water soluble …

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford Jun 1948

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford

Theses and Dissertations

Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner Jun 1948

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this investigation was to determine whether or not a certain sample of raw resin, collected by Mr. Adriaan Nagelvoort from coal from Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, could be separated into more than one fraction with each fraction having distinctly different properties. Three methods of separation were attempted: (l) Separation of specific gravity fractions, (2) separation by use of solvents, and (3) chromatographic separation. Properties determined as a means of establishing any differences in the resins were: solubility, softening points, acid numbers, and iodine numbers.

Physical Properties Of Ellis County Adobe, William G. Read May 1948

Physical Properties Of Ellis County Adobe, William G. Read

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Houses made of soil have been built for centuries, but until recently the trend had been away from soil to some other building material. Now, however, adobe is again beginning to be recognized as a satisfactory, reliable building material for our time. Recently, especially in the southwestern part of the United States, a surprising number of dwellers have turned again to earth for their building material. They are following in the footsteps of the early settlers, who constructed many missions and other buildings from sun-dried earth. Many of these buildings, although aged, are still in use or may be viewed …
