"This study originally was undertaken to describe the witherite identified in specimens collected at the Minerva Oil Company Mine No. 1, Hardin County, Illinois. The original specimens of witherite were collected on October 25, 1948, by Charles E. Tothill, while on a senior trip through the fluorspar mine. The witherite was identified by Dr. O. R. Grawe, Chairman of the Geology Department, Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Missouri, to whom the specimens were presented. Dr. Grawe suggested that the writer visit the southern Illinois fluorspar area to determine the occurrence and distribution of the witherite. This mineral had been described …

"The section of a Geiger Counter is characterized by the so-called plateau curve. In this curve the counting rate of a given counter is plotted as a function of voltage, when the gas which it contains and the radiation to which it is exposed are both kept the same. These curves are characterized by a rapid rise beyond the starting potential (potential at which the counter begins to respond) until a more or less flat region is reached. Information on metals in the solid state is needed in pure physics to test theories of cohesion and in physical metallurgy to explain sintering. The common approach to the problem of surface tension in the solid state is to hang a weight on a thin wire or leaf of metal and then heat this weighted sample to a temperature at which flow is appreciable. Colgrove Butte is a flat-topped erosional remnant with a cap of rock area of approximately 0.845 square miles, rising about 200 feet above the surrounding Missouri Plateau in northwestern Hettinger County, North Dakota. Its upper portion consists of flat lying fresh water deposits of White River (Oligocene) age, containing beds of hard limestone, marls, argillaceous limestones, calcareous clays, clays and sands. It is everywhere covered by a mantle of top soil 6 inches to 3 feet 6 inches thick. Below this topsoil, extending over approximately two-thirds of the caprock area of the butte, is a bed of hard limestone averaging …

Multivariate analysis is the simultaneous comparison of three or more variables in order to determine the significance of their likenesses and differences. The technique has been in use for some thirteen years, but no simple account of the method has hitherto been available. An illustrative example from invertebrate paleontology is here used, but the method is applicable to any problem in geology involving several quantitatively known variables.

In student laboratory experiments in dynamics, as, for example, Newton's second law of motion or the conservation of momentum, it is, of course, highly desirable to allow motion with the least possible constraint and to observe the displacements of moving parts without using perturbing markers. This circumstance has led us to use motion pictures in the student laboratory for quantitative observation of rapid dynamic processes, a technique which is used in a well-known textbook.' The photographic method combines maximum freedom of movement with accurate observation of position as a function of time, if the camera frame speed is sufficiently high. …

This circular summarizes the results of recent studies of Lake Mead and its environs. Area-capacity tables, prepared on the basis of a hydrographic survey of the lake in 1948-49, show that the capacity of the reservoir was reduced 4. 9 percent during the first 14 years after Hoover Dam was completed, but the usable capacity was reduced only 3.2 percent. Practically all of this reduction was caused by accumulation of sediment in the reservoir. Studies of inflow and outflow indicate that the reservoir has a total storage capacity about 12 percent greater than that shown by the area-capacity table, because …

PALEONTOLOGICAL and archaeological discoveries were made near Cambridge, Nebraska, by the University of Nebraska State Museum field party in the spring of 1947 (Schultz and Frankforter, 1948, pp. 279-280) . Fossils and artifacts were found in situ at the base of a fifty-foot terrace on Lime Creek (University of Nebraska State Museum Localities Ft-41 and Ft-42) and on Medicine Creek just below the mouth of Lime Creek (Ft-50). In view of many special circumstances encountered in dealing with fossil material, there is a rather extended consideration here given to the theoretical background of the quantitative method as applied to fossil invertebrates. First there is a consideration of the relations between sampling theory and paleontology.
