Contour furrows increase pasture growth

Good pastures on steep slopes will give profitable returns from grazing, and will also reduce erosion risks. Water needed for pasture growth on such slopes must not be allowed to run off and erode lower slopes. The use of contour furrows is a readily applied erosion control measure which can be very effective in increasing the amount of water held and absorbed on steep slopes.

This paper presents evidence for the post-Price River and pre-North Horn orogeny, in the Gunnison Plateau of central Utah (Fig. 1), and shows its magnitude. The first definite evidence of such a movement was found by C. T. Hardy in 1951, although it had been suggested previously, without definite evidence, by Gilliland (1949, 1951).

Montana has long been known to have very large resources of coal and oil, and undetermined amounts of oil shale. The reserves of coal and oil have been proven, in part, and have been produced commercially, but not much is known about the extent and apparent value of the oil shales. Under present .conditions, and according to standards set by the United States Bureau of Mines, the shales are not of commercial value. They are, however, a potentially valuable mineral resource, and portions of them will possibly be utilized, although not in the near future.

Riding Mountain National Park is located in southwestern Manitoba within easy reach of important centres of population. From park headquarters at Wasagaming, it is only 140 miles southeast to Winnipeg, 57 miles south to Brandon, 35 miles north to Dauphin, and 102 miles to the International Boundary. Most of the surrounding country is devoted to agriculture.

The total park area approximates 1,148 square miles. Except for restricted tourist areas, it remains in a primitive condition, with unspoiled forests, prairies, streams, and lakes.

Let R be the ring of entire functions, and let K be the complex field. In an earlier paper [6], the author investigated the ideal structure of R, particular attention being paid to the maximal ideals. In 1946, Schilling [9, Lemma 5] stated that every prime ideal of R is maximal. Recently, I. Kaplansky pointed out to the author (in conversation) that this statement is false, and constructed a non maximal prime ideal of R (see Theorem 1(a), below). This document, submitted by Ann Frazier in 1953, presents a comprehensive study of petroleum resources, production, and consumption within the United States and foreign countries, specifically examining their relationship to national welfare and security. The research highlights that while the United States was the world's leading consumer and producer at the time, accounting for over half of global oil production and roughly sixty percent of consumption, its domestic reserves were a waning asset that could not be renewed. In an earlier paper, the author showed that if M is any maximal ideal of R, the residue class field R/M is isomorphic with the complex field K. In this paper, under some restrictions, this theorem is extended to the ring R_λ of all entire functions of order no greater than λ, and hence to R*.

In the year 1946, two townships of 36 square miles each were selected for experimental work in aerial censusing. The primary objective was to devise a technique for obtaining complete counts of upland game birds on limited areas during the winter months.

The aerial survey proved to be very satisfactory when snow conditions are right. All available cover must be well filled with snow, with very few bare spots in fields or other parts of the area. The birds tend to congregate on such bare places where it is very difficult to see them from the plane.

Thie work was begun with the intention of studying the adsorption of organic compounds upon the hydrogen electrode. The fact that certain substances, even when present in extremely low concentration, will poison the electrode with which they are in contact shows clearly that these substances must be strongly adsorbed on the electrode surface. The problem or determining the amount absorbed at various concentration, temperatures, and pressures, however, required a method capable of detecting quantities of adsorbate in the ordor of 10^-11 moles.

Measuring Waterfowl Habitat- Population Changes From Aerial Photos, Harvey W. Miller

A survey was conducted in 1953 to determine the feasibility of using aerial photography to measure the trends in available waterfowl habitat in the Nebraska Sandhills. This pilot survey included 96 one-square-mile sections systematically distributed over the area to give a 0.49 percent sampling rate.

The basic waterfo\o1l habitat types apparent on the aerial photos of these sections were identified and measured with a planimeter and map measure. These ascertained totals were then projected to obtain the estimated total of each habitat type in the study area.

As we have mentioned before, an important item from the winter counts is the ratio of cock pheasants to hen pheasants after the season has ended. Your winter records showed 88 cocks per 100 hens for the state as a whole. In extreme southeastern Nebraska (where pheasants are scarce), and for central and western Nebraska, you recorded more cocks than hens. For most of the eastern third of the state (where most of the pheasant hunting is done) you recorded two cocks for every three hens. This reflects the removal of more cocks by …

A magnetometer survey in respect to oil exploration is a regional reconnaissance tool and, therefore, it is customary to check an interesting magnetic anomaly with a seismograph or gravimeter. An exception to this is found in micro magnetic surveys which, because of their detailed nature 28 nature, may serve as a cheek on the other types of geophysical surveying.
