In the study of many electrochemical processes, such as, surface adsorption on electrodes, a simple, rapid, and relatively accurate coulometer that will measure .01 to 1.0 coulombs, would be extremely useful. This project was commenced to investigate the feasibility of an entirely different approach for coulometric analysis for application in this range.

This new type of coulometer utilizes a colorimeter for determining the amount of coulombs passed through coulometer cell. Consequently, any electrode process which of its own nature is color-producing, or a process which, in turn, can actuate a color indicator, is a potential reaction for this colorimetric couloumeter.

Adsorption of cations by clays has been a subject of investigation for many years. Many proposals have been advanced to explain this process of adsorption. Two proposals have been prominent in recent years. The Marshall "charged lattice" theory attributes adsorption of cations by clays to an electrostatic attration of the clay particles for cations. This charge on the clay particles is attributed to various isomorphic substitutions in the lattice of the clay which result in an unbalanced charge on the particle. It is well known that the root of an algebraic equation is a continuous multiple-valued function of its coefficients [5, p. 3]. However, it is not necessarily true that a root can be given by a continuous single-valued function. A complete solution of this problem has long been known in the case where the coefficients are themselves polynomials in a complex variable [3, chap. V]. It was the purpose of this study to construct a universal mount, to construct a protective lead shield, to operate the instrument, and to provide a pole figure using the transmission method of Schulz and Decker. There are at present several lengthy x-ray methods of determining the grain orientation of metals. These methods are mainly photographic. In order to provide a rapid means of obtaining the necessary information concerning the grain orientation of a metal, a universal mount was constructed.

The area first came into prominence with the discovery of gold at the Mayflower Mine in 1896. In this work an attempt is made to develop a new method for estimating the zeros of the Ultraspherical Polynomials. This method presupposes knowledge of the differential equation that these polynomials satisfy. The field investigation for this report was initiated in October 1952 and was continued intermittently until February 1953. The area was mapped on the scale of 1/31680 with the aid of aerial photographs and Soil Conservation Service planimeteric base map 173. This scale was later enlargened to 1/15840. Rock and mineral specimens were studied with the aid of a hand lens, and the oil immersion method was used to identify some minerals. No thin sections were made. X-ray diffraction methods were used to determine the cell constants and structure of CeNi. The unit cell is orthohombic. The spcae group is probably Cmcm with a_O=3.77 +/- 0.01, b_O=10.46 +/- 0.02, c_O=4.37+/- 0.01 A. The cell formula is Ce₄Ni_4. The observed density if 7.51 grams/cm³ and the calculated density is 7.65 grams/cm³, a deviation of 1.8%.

Recent work by Castle and Kruse (16) has partially elucidated the range of reactivity of the chlorine atom in the compounds 4-chlorocinnoline and 4-chloro-6,7-dimethoxycinnoline. Condensations between the chlorinated cinnolines and certain phenylacetonitriles were found to proceed readily; however, condensations with compounds of the malonic ester type were unsuccessful. It was found that hydrolysis of the condensation product obtained from 4-chlorocinnoline and phenylacetontrile by hot 60% sulfuric acid caused decarboxylation of the intermediate acid, the final product being 4-benzylcinnoline. This compound has a formal resemblance to the basic ring structure of papaverine.

The area covered in this report lies between Mt. Taylor and the Rio Puerco, and embraces approximately 675 square miles. Much of it is readily accessible by either paved highways or improved roads. The general region is a land of numerous mesas, the largest of which is Mesa Chivato. Sandstones form prominent ridges while shales and alluvium form the valleys. Many volcanic plugs stand out as landmarks.

Stratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Carboniferous Rocks Of The Cedro Canyon Area, Manzanita Mountains, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Ernest Szabo

The discovery of an extension into the Cedro Canyon area, in the northern Manzanita Mountains, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, of strata similar in lithology and stratigraphic position to known pre-Pennsylvanian rocks of nearby areas is included in this report. No diagnostic fossils have been found in these newly discovered strata and therefore definite age assignment can not be made.

The Pennsylvanian strata are dominantly marine and exhibit unusual lighologic variations. These variations are attributed to the environment of a transgressing sea on an unstable shelf.

Measured sections indicate that it is possible to subdivide these strata according to series on …
