A new sophisticated electromagnetic current meter was laboratory and field tested in a wide variety of applications, ranging from measurement of net bottom currents (primarily tidal origin) on the continental shelf, to horizontal and vertical components of wave induced orbital motion of waves with periods as small as one second.

These tests indicate that this instrument is capable of performing to at least the following specifications, subject to the comments which follow:

The uncertainties of technology, financing, nature, politics, law and institutionalism must be evaluated by corporate and government planners to find long-run solutions. The evaluation of the sensitivity of planning recommendations to the uncertainty involved in this multi-variate problem, along with national economic shifts caused by alternative abatement funding programs is critical in formulating the “best” plan to ensure success of the national program.

The Convention on the Continental Shelf has come under attack because it does not establish a precise outer boundary for the "legal" continental shelf. It is the author's opinion that the United States should propose or support a revision of the Convention which would rectify this situation. A suitable delimitation proposal must have considerable domestic support and should represent the best compromise between opposing domestic views. A proposed revision of the Convention must, also, have strong international support if it is to be adopted. Environmental factors which have impeded activity in the Arctic, in the past, remain significant barriers to the development of the Northwest Passage. Consequently, enormous capital as well as bilateral planning and cooperation between United States and Canadian public and private agencies will be required if significant progress is to be achieved. The resource wealth of the Arctic promises the economic incentives essential to the eventual development of a transportation system to permit exploitation of these resources. Development of a commercially feasible Northwest Passage is both economically and strategically desirable. However, immense physical and engineering problems remain to be solved.

Where human populations are involved, however, a host of social changes occur, many of which fundamentally alter the way of life of a people.

"Sound velocity models currently in use by the U. S. Navy require difficult data sampling at great expense. This study is to investigate the feasibility of a sound velocity model dependent only upon position that would be valid for a selected, reasonably large, near homogeneous area of the ocean. The most important position parameters are latitude, longitude, and depth. To accomplish this objective a critical depth of 2500 meters was established for an 8° by 20° rectangle of the Sargasso Sea which lies within the North Atlantic Ocean. "This study is an investigation of the environmental conditions which affect cross country movement for tracked military vehicles on a major portion of the Fort Leonard Wood Military Reservation.

The terrain has been mapped from the trafficability standpoint by an investigation of the geology, topography, pedology and restrictive vegetation characteristics of the Bloodland seven and one-half minute quadrangle. The terrain analysis was accomplished by a combination of map study, laboratory investigation, photo interpretation, and direct field study of representative soil and vegetation types. "Geologic mapping has been completed for the northern half of the Ellington Quadrangle, Missouri. Rocks exposed in the thesis area are Precambrian and Paleozoic in age. The Precambrian rocks are granites and felsite. The Paleozoic rocks include the Potosi and Eminence Formations, of Upper Cambrian age, and the Gasconade Formation of Ordovician age. Distinction between the Potosi and Eminence Formations is difficult because of conformable and transitional relationships. In the thesis area sufficient evidence was available to separate the dolomites of the Potosi and Eminence as mappable units. This mapping should be useful as a basis for more detailed geologic …
