Radar System Classification Using Neural Networks, David M. Cameron

This study investigated methods of improving the accuracy of neural networks in the classification of large numbers of classes. A literature search revealed that neural networks have been successful in the radar classification problem, and that many complex problems have been solved using systems of multiple neural networks. The experiments conducted were based on 32 classes of radar system data. The neural networks were modelled using a program called the Neural Graphics Analysis System. It was found that the accuracy of the individual neural networks could be increased by controlling the number of hidden nodes, the relative numbers of training …

One of the most cost effective ways to learn and home the skills necessary to conduct and win a war is through the use of realistic computer simulations of conflict, or wargames. The Saber wargame was developed for just this purpose. Saber is a multisided, theater-level simulation developed by the Air Force Institute of Technology for the Air Force Wargaming Center. It models conventional, nuclear, and chemical warfare between aggregated air and ground forces. To aid in the realism, the effects of logistics, satellites, weather, and intelligence are represented. A Hybrid Approach To Battlefield Parallel Discrete Event Simulation, Steven R. Soderholm

This thesis describes a method of parallelizing a battlefield discrete event simulation. The method combines elements of conservative time synchronization together with elements of optimistic computation and local rollback on a message passing hardware architecture. The battle simulation features aircraft moving in a battle area and launching missiles at enemy aircraft. Aircraft are randomly grouped into logical process (LPs), and a single LP is assigned to each processor. Aircraft state information is replicated across all LPs. Only the LP with the minimum next event time can execute safely. While one LP is executing safely all other LPs are precomputing their …

Transfer Of 4gl Application From Ingres To Oracle, Adnan Altunisik

This paper documents the transfer of 4GL applications from INGRES to ORACLE. As a result of a fast and conceptual change in computer languages, 4GLs were developed and evolved. These are programming support tools whose goal is, basically, to make the programs more efficient by reducing the number of instructions. Both ORACLE and INGRES database systems use 4GLs to develop applications. Their 4GL environments and their facilities for application development are investigated and explained in depth in this effort. The Theater Warfare Exercise (TWX) is a two-sided, theater-level, decision-making exercise created, maintained and used by the personnel at the Air Force Wargaming Center. It is used to allow military officers to practice the decision-making process needed for the wartime employment of air power. An automated player was designed and a prototype implemented for the red (enemy) player using an expert system shell. The automated red player uses the TWX database that contains the data on the different units used in exercise. The 1982 Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III) has given states jurisdiction over unprecedented scopes of ocean space. Marine scientific research is among the activities under coastal state control. This thesis examines five possible areas of impact of coastal state control on United States research programs. These are: 1. research which was denied outright, 2. reasons for denials, 3. research which was delayed, 4. the extent to which researchers avoid requests in the waters of restrictive states, and 5. the level of interest among UNOLS institutions in cooperative arrangements with foreign governments. Real-Time Flight Simulation And The Head-Mounted Display - An Inexpensive Approach To Military Pilot Training, Philip A. Platt

The integration of the low-cost head-mounted display (HMD), an inexpensive graphics workstation-based flight simulator, and a communications network was investigated to determine if the prototype of an inexpensive multi- aircraft Virtual Flight Simulator could be built. Previous research efforts have coupled HMD technology and flight simulation; however, the cost of these systems has been high. This thesis effort emphasized the use of joystick devices to emulate pilot control, the implementation of a fully enclosed virtual flight simulator, and the utilization of low-cost NTSC-based television technology to produce a prototype. Oxidation of heavy metal sulfides is a thermodynamically spontaneous process. Because of this, metal sulfides in the presence of oxygen are not stable. Currently there are over 100 streams and rivers, within the U.S., contaminated with heavy metal mine drainage; therefore an approved method of restoration is necessary. Precipitation of heavy metals as sulfides using H₂S as a reductant has been favorably reviewed as a restorative technique to clean up mining areas. However, using this technique on the laboratory scale does not prove to be a viable answer and shows strong pH dependence.

North Carolina's development in colonial times and in the early stages of statehood was greatly affected by her coastline. An abundant coastline did not translate into an abundance of good ports, in fact, difficult coastal and inland navigation hampered early commercial development. North Carolina's barrier islands and numerous inlets served as a haven for pirates in colonial days, for privateers during the Revolution, and later defied the North's blockade during the Civil War. There were several attempts by individuals to encourage maritime trade in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Shortly after World War II the state mobilized to …

The aim of this paper is to identify the geographical constraints to Soviet marine power, assess their impact and explore alternatives that may be considered to reduce their detrimental effects. The paper will provide a background by addressing the recent history, status and current missions of the Soviet Navy, which is the vehicle for maritime power. The nature of the geographical constraints will then be discussed before assessing individually the impacts on the four Soviet Fleets: Northern, Baltic, Black Sea, and Pacific.
