While the management of resources in computer systems can greatly impact the usefulness and integrity of the system, finding an optimal solution to the management problem is unfortunately NP hard. Adding to the complexity, today's 'modern' systems - such as in multimedia, medical, and military systems - may be, and often are, comprised of interacting real and non-real-time components. In addition, these systems can be driven by a host of non-functional objectives – often differing not only in nature, importance, and form, but also in dimensional units and range, and themselves interacting in complex ways. Agent-based collaborative decision support is a methodology of utilizing domain specific intelligent systems, interacting in a common environment, to partner with one or more human decision makers to reach a consensus solution to a complex problem. An example is the recently developed Collaborative Infrastructure Assessment Tool (CIAT) that provides a collaborative planning facility management tool in support of military pier and port management. In late August 1991 scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML) and Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) began a pilot study to investigate the capability of hydrophones from the US. Navy’s fixed array system to detect large whales in the North Pacific by passive reception of their calls. PMEL had previously established a direct data link from five bottom-mounted arrays of the Navy SOSUS (Sound Surveillance System), via the Naval Oceanographic Processing Facility (NOPF) at Whidbey Island, Washington, to study low-level seafloor seismicity (Fox et al. 1994). The one-line numerical model GENESIS has been calibrated to evaluate its performance as a tool in providing insights into the physical components to manage the coastal environment. To calibrate the model, physical environmental data, literature research, and computer modeling methodologies were utilized in addressing the objectives of this thesis. The model was applied at three beaches of the Virginia Beach City with different man-made structures by using the actual field wave data for wave year J 997. Waves are the main environmental component affecting the coastal system; however, additional environmental data and the best engineering decision were used as model …

The primary objective of this research is to develop an inexpensive and reliable method to generate vapor pulses of explosives using 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene TNTl for proof of concept. A secondary objective is to demonstrate the use of the vapor generator in various applications keeping in mind potential field scenarios involving explosives. A vapor generator/collector system was developed which gives reproducible pulses of TNT vapors at nanogram levels. The use of this technology was demonstrated in evaluating different surfaces for vapor adsorption of TNT in conjunction with ion mobility spectrometry as the primary analytical tool. Chlorpyrifos is a member of the organophosphorus class of insecticides. This class of insecticides has become one of the most widely under groups of pest control chemicals. Early organophosphorus compounds that were found to be efficacious for insect control and thus brought into widespread use, e.g. Chlorpyrifos, Parathion and Malathion. The broad-spectrum insecticidal properties of Chlorpyrifos indicated that it possessed substantial commercial potential to use against a wide variety of important arthropod pest via a number of commercialized products. The dinucleating ligand N,N‘-(2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-xylylene)bis(N-(carboxymethyl)glycine) (CH₃HXTA) has been used to synthesize the dinuclear Cu(II) bis(pyridine) complex Na[Cu₂(CH₃HXTA)(Py)₂]·1.5(1,4-dioxane) (Na(1)):  triclinic space group P1̄ (a = 12.550(3) Å, b = 13.413(3) Å, c = 13.540(4) Å, α = 117.12(2)°, β = 104.70 (2)°, and γ = 92.13(2)°). The structure shows two distinct distorted square pyramidal Cu(II) centers with each Cu(II) ion bound by two carboxylate oxygen atoms, one amine nitrogen atom, a phenolate oxygen atom, and one pyridine nitrogen atom. Wastewater reuse has a positive and negative environmental impacts and possibly it can have an important role to play in water resources management, as a substituent for freshwater in irrigation. However, the presence of the toxic heavy metals in domestic sewage and in industrial effluents discharge to sewers, wastewater can create unacceptable health and environmental risks. Therefore, the present work includes the determination of the toxic heavy metals in some treated wastewater samples collected from Abu-Dhabi area using polarographic and voltammetric techniques. The vocal behavior of ziphiid whales is very poorly known. Free-swimming northern bottlenose whales, Hyperoodon ampullatus, have been recorded producing 3-16 kHz whistles and chirps (Winn et al. 1970; linear equipment frequency response 500 Hz-14 kHz) and 20-30 kHz ultrasonic clicks (Fauchner and Whitehead, unpublished data; equipment response to 35 kHz). A free-swimming mesoplodont beaked whale (probably Mesoplodon hertori) produced ultrasonic clicks (Ljungblad, unpublished data; equipment frequency response to 32 kHz). The AEGIS Weapons System (AWS), part of the AEGIS Combat System (ACS), is an integral part of the defense system on U.S. Navy AEGIS-class ships. AEGIS Data Analysis and Reduction (ADAR) has been developed to assist in the evaluation of the AWS data. ADAR, along with the AWS and ACS, has evolved through the years to accommodate advances in technology and computer programming languages. Additionally, ADAR has evolved so that users located at sites other than the Naval Surface Warfare System Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD), Dahlgren, Virginia, can reduce tactical system data and perform data analysis using the reduced data.

Numerous Tertiary to recent volcanoes are located in East Africa. Thus, much of the region is made up volcanic rock, which hosts the largest and greatest variety of East Africas caves. Exploration of volcanic caves has preoccupied members of Cave Exploration Group of East Africa (CEGEA) for the past 30 years. The various publications edited by CEGEA are in this respect a treasure troves of speleological information. In the present paper an overview on the most important volcanic caves and areas are shortly reported.

Current computer generated forces (CGFs) in the 'synthetic battlespace', a training arena used by the military, exhibit several deficiencies. Human actors within the battlespace rapidly identify these CGFs and defeat them using unrealistic and potentially fatal tactics, reducing the overall effectiveness of this training arena. Simulators attached to the synthetic battlespace host local threat systems, leading to training inconsistencies when different simulators display the same threat at different levels of fidelity. Finally, current CGFs are engineered 'from the ground up', often without exploiting commonalities with other existing CGFs, increasing development (and ultimately training) costs. Niobrara State Park is located in northwestern Knox County, Nebraska, just west of the town of Niobrara and on the west side of the Niobrara River. The present park was opened in the summer of 1987. Mostly north of Nebraska Highway 12, the site is hilly with bluffs overlooking the Missouri and Niobrara rivers. Excellent facilities include paved roads, cabins, an outdoor swimming pooi, hiking trails, picnic and camping sites, horseback riding trails, playgrounds, restrooms, a group lodge, and an interpretive shelter. This research develops theoretical methods for parameter estimation of filtered, pulsed sinusoids in noise and demonstrates their effectiveness for Electronic Warfare EW applications. Within the context of stochastic modeling, a new linear model, parameterized by a set of Linear Prediction LP coefficients, is derived for estimating the frequencies of filtered sinusoids. This model is an improvement over previous modeling techniques since the effects of the filter and the coefficients upon the noise statistics are properly accounted for during model development. From this linear model, a relationship between LP coefficient estimation and Maximum Likelihood ML frequency estimation is derived and several …
