Frequency Diverse Array Radar: Signal Characterization And Measurement Accuracy, Steven H. Brady Mar 2010

Frequency Diverse Array Radar: Signal Characterization And Measurement Accuracy, Steven H. Brady

Theses and Dissertations

Radar systems provide an important remote sensing capability, and are crucial to the layered sensing vision; a concept of operation that aims to apply the right number of the right types of sensors, in the right places, at the right times for superior battle space situational awareness. The layered sensing vision poses a range of technical challenges, including radar, that are yet to be addressed. To address the radar-specific design challenges, the research community responded with waveform diversity; a relatively new field of study which aims reduce the cost of remote sensing while improving performance. Early work suggests that the …

Cyanide is a toxic chemical that may be introduced into living organisms as a result of natural processes and/or anthropogenic uses (legal or illicit). Exposure to cyanide can be verified by analysis of cyanide or one of its breakdown products from biological samples. This verification may be important for medical, law-enforcement, military, forensic, research, or veterinary purposes. This review will discuss current bioanalytical techniques used for the verification of cyanide exposure, identify common problems associated with the analysis of cyanide and its biological breakdown products, and briefly address the metabolism and toxicokinetics of cyanide and its breakdown products in biological …

Towards Context-Aware Real-Time Information Dissemination, Kyoung-Don Kang, Greg Vert Jan 2010

Towards Context-Aware Real-Time Information Dissemination, Kyoung-Don Kang, Greg Vert

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

Real-time information dissemination is essential for the success of key applications such as transportation management and battlefield monitoring. In these applications, relevant information should be disseminated to interested users in a timely fashion. However, it is challenging to support timely information dissemination due to the limited and even time-varying network bandwidth. Thus, a naive approach disseminating every data with no consideration of the context that describes where and when the data is acquired and how it can satisfy users may only provide poor performance and user perceived quality of service (QoS). To address the problem, we design a novel context-aware …

The 2010 Personal Firewall Robustness Evaluation, Satnam Singh Bhamra

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

With the advent of cheaper Internet connections, the number of Internet connections among home users is on the rise. Generally, home users have little understanding of the security concerns associated with Internet connectivity. To protect against computer attacks, generally a home user may install a personal firewall on his/her computer. To determine the effectiveness of personal firewalls, evaluation tests were performed against the ten firewall products available to users at local electronic stores and listed on popular firewall security websites. The firewalls were tested in their default and maximum security mode. The investigation was carried out by performing a port …

Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Biological Fluids : A Study Of Liquid Chromatography Coupled To Analytical Atomic Spectrometric Instrumentation, Kanna Ito Jan 2010

Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Biological Fluids : A Study Of Liquid Chromatography Coupled To Analytical Atomic Spectrometric Instrumentation, Kanna Ito

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Arsenic exists as many different chemical forms including inorganic, methylated and dietary species. The toxicity of these species varies: some are highly toxic and can cause adverse health effects in many parts of the body; others are considered relatively non-toxic. Monitoring arsenic exposure is usually accomplished by its direct measurement in biological fluids. Urine is the specimen of choice for assessing arsenic exposure, because of its short biological half-life in blood. There have been very few studies of arsenic species in blood, yet such research can provide valuable information on arsenic distribution and its metabolism in the body.

The 2009 Analysis Of Information Remaining On Disks Offered For Sale On The Second Hand Market, Andy Jones, Craig Valli, Glenn S. Dardick, Iain Sutherland, G. Dabibi, Gareth Davies

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The ever increasing use and reliance upon computers in both the public and private sector has led to enormous numbers of computers being disposed of at the end of their useful life within an organisation. As the cost of computers has dropped, their use in the home has also continued to increase. In most organisations, computers have a relatively short life and are replaced on a regular basis with the result that, if not properly cleansed of data, they are released into the public domain containing data that can be relatively up to date. This problem is exacerbated by the …

Hydrolysis Of P-Nitrophenyl Esters Promoted By Semi-Fluorinated Quaternary Ammonium Polymer Latexes And Films, Baljinder Kaur, Sean P. Mcbride, Warren T. Ford Jan 2010

Hydrolysis Of P-Nitrophenyl Esters Promoted By Semi-Fluorinated Quaternary Ammonium Polymer Latexes And Films, Baljinder Kaur, Sean P. Mcbride, Warren T. Ford

Physics Faculty Research

Semifluorinated polymer latexes were prepared by emulsion polymerization of 2.5-25% of a fluoroalkyl methacrylate, 25% chloromethylstyrene, 1% styrylmethyl(trimethyl)ammonium chloride, and the remainder 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate under surfactant-free conditions. The chloromethylstyrene units were converted to quaternary ammonium ions with trimethylamine. In aqueous dispersions at particle concentrations of less than 1 mg mL-1 the quaternary ammonium ion latexes promoted hydrolyses of p-nitrophenyl hexanoate (PNPH) in pH 9.4 borate buffer and of diethyl p-nitrophenyl phosphate (Paraoxon) in 0.1 M NaOH at 30 oC with half-lives of less than 10 minutes. Thin 0.7-2 μm films of the latexes on glass promoted fast …

Collapse Of The Maya: Could Deforestation Have Contributed?, Robert J. Oglesby, Thomas L. Sever, William Saturno, David J. Erickson Iii, Jayanthi Srikishen

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The collapse of the Maya civilization during the ninth century A.D. is a major conundrum in the history of mankind. This civilization reached a spectacular peak but then almost completely collapsed in the space of a few decades. While numerous explanations have been put forth to explain this collapse, in recent years, drought has gained favor. This is because water resources were a key for the Maya, especially to ensure their survival during the lengthy dry season that occurs where they lived. Natural drought is a known, recurring feature of this region, as evidenced by observational data, reconstructions of past …

Vulnerability Analysis Of Rfid Protocols For Tag Ownership Transfer, Pedro Peris-Lopez, Julio Hernandez-Castro, Juan Tapiador, Tieyan Li, Yingjiu Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In RFIDSec’08, Song proposed an ownership transfer scheme, which consists of an ownership transfer protocol and a secret update protocol [7]. The ownership transfer protocol is completely based on a mutual authentication protocol proposed in WiSec’08 [8]. In Rizomiliotis et al. (2009) [6], van Deursen and Radomirovic (2008), the first weaknesses to be identified (tag and server impersonation) were addressed and this paper completes the consideration of them all. We find that the mutual authentication protocol, and therefore the ownership transfer protocol, possesses certain weaknesses related to most of the security properties initially required in protocol design: tag information leakage, …

Redtnet: A Network Model For Strategy Games, Philip Hingston, Mike Preuss, Daniel Spierling

Research outputs pre 2011

In this work, we develop a simple, graph-based framework, RedTNet, for computational modeling of strategy games and simulations. The framework applies the concept of red teaming as a means by which to explore alternative strategies. We show how the model supports computer-based red teaming in several applications: realtime strategy games and critical infrastructure protection, using an evolutionary algorithm to automatically detect good and often surprising strategies.

The Adsl Router Forensics Process, Patryk Szewczyk Jan 2010

The Adsl Router Forensics Process, Patryk Szewczyk

Research outputs pre 2011

In 2010 the number of threats targeting ADSL routers is continually increasing. New and emergent threats have been developed to bypass authentication processes and obtain admin privileges directly to the device. As a result many malicious attempts are being made to alter the configuration data and make the device subsequently vulnerable. This paper discusses the non-invasive digital forensics approach into extracting evidence from ADSL routers. Specifically it validates an identified digital forensic process of acquisition. The paper then discusses how the approach may be utilised to extract configuration data ever after a device has been compromised to the point where …

Caretakers Of The Garden Of Delight And Discontent: Adirondack Narrative, Conflict, And Environmental Virtue, Eric Richard Holmlund Jan 2010

Caretakers Of The Garden Of Delight And Discontent: Adirondack Narrative, Conflict, And Environmental Virtue, Eric Richard Holmlund

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation concerns a widely recognized natural area, New York's Adirondack Park, that serves both as an international model for conservation and as a context for persistent conflict over natural resources, space, wealth and esthetics. It employs narrative inquiry as a method to examine the sources and the function of narratives or stories explaining the history and the present status of social groups in the Park. Narrative theorists maintain that we borrow from such socially circulating narratives to craft our own identities, and then repeat them until we believe them, almost without regard for the factual basis in history or …

A New Multi-Tier Adaptive Military Manet Security Protocol Using Hybrid Cryptography And Signcryption, Atti̇la A. Yavuz, Fati̇h Alagöz, Emi̇n Anarim

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs) are expected to play an important role in tactical military networks by providing infrastructureless communication. However, maintaining secure and instant information sharing is a difficult task especially for highly dynamic military MANETs. To address this requirement, we propose a new multi-tier adaptive military MANET security protocol using hybrid cryptography and signcryption. In our protocol, we bring novelties to secure military MANET communication for three main points: Cryptographic methods used in MANETs, hybrid key management protocols and structural organization of the military MANETs. As a new approach, we use hybrid cryptography mechanisms and Elliptic Curve Pintsov-Vanstone Signature …

Remote Sensing Applications Of Hf Skywave Radar: The Australian Experience, Stuart Anderson Jan 2010

Remote Sensing Applications Of Hf Skywave Radar: The Australian Experience, Stuart Anderson

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Australia has conducted research into over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) for almost sixty years. Early programs focused exclusively on military capabilities, such as the detection of aircraft, missiles and ships, but in 1974 a team was formed to design a new OTHR for which a remote sensing mission was proposed. Oceanic wind mapping experiments in 1977-78 yielded promising results so remote sensing became a recognised mission assigned to the new radar, known as Jindalee Stage B. This capability was progressively expanded over the period 1982-87 to include mapping of wave height and other oceanographic variables. A real-time data link to the Australian …

"All The Crises Reached A Concerted Crescendo" - The Arab Oil Embargo And Why The United States Was Unprepared For It, Jonathan D. Chilcote

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

During the 2008 spike in oil prices, oil companies and government officials were brought under close scrutiny as many Americans began to question why prices were able to rise so quickly. Americans had become accustomed to living in an economy where cheap oil was the norm, and demanded answers when that situation changed. What most of them did not know is that they were repeating history and mimicking the response to the 1973 oil embargo. Just as in 2008, the United States faced a crisis in 1973 with which it was unprepared to effectively cope. This thesis analyzes the reasons …

Therefore, the overall aim of this paper is to identify issues and factors that assist the implementation and the adoption of IS culture and practices within the Saudi environment. The goal of this paper is to identify the important conditions for creating an information …

Statistical Tools For Linking Engine-Generated Malware To Its Engine, Edna Chelangat Milgo Dec 2009

Statistical Tools For Linking Engine-Generated Malware To Its Engine, Edna Chelangat Milgo

Theses and Dissertations

Malware-generating engines challenge typical malware analysts by requiring them to quickly extract and upload to their customers' machines, a signature for each of a possibly vast number of never-before-seen malware instances that an engine can generate in a short amount of time In this thesis we propose and evaluate two methods for linking variants of engine-generated malware to its engine. The proposed methods use the w-gram frequency vector (NFV) of the opcode mnemonics of an engine-generated malware in- stance as a feature vector for the instance. An NFV is a tuple that maps «-grams with their frequencies. The in-formation contained …

Tactical Analysis Of Attack In Physical And Digital Security Incidents:Towards A Model Of Asymmetry, Atif Ahmad Dec 2009

Tactical Analysis Of Attack In Physical And Digital Security Incidents:Towards A Model Of Asymmetry, Atif Ahmad

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Asymmetric warfare is frequently described as a conflict where ‘weaker’ parties aim to offset their relatively inadequate resources by using particular strategies and tactics to their advantage. This research-in-progress paper develops a concept model of asymmetric warfare that represents the leverage available to the ‘weaker’ party over the ‘stronger’ party simply because the former is attacking rather than defending. Points of leverage include choice of timing, location, method of attack, best use of limited resources and time to prepare. The resulting concept model is used to discuss generic defensive strategies that can be applied by ‘stronger’ parties in the physical …

Ascent Of Asymmetric Risk In Information Security: An Initial Evaluation., Tobias Ruighaver, Matthew Warren, Atif Ahmad

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Dramatic changes in the information security risk landscape over several decades have not yet been matched by similar changes in organizational information security, which is still mainly based on a mindset that security is achieved through extensive preventive controls. As a result, maintenance cost of information security is increasing rapidly, but this increased expenditure has not really made an attack more difficult. The opposite seems to be true, information security attacks have become easier to perpetrate and appear more like information warfare tactics. At the same time, the damage caused by a successful attack has increased significantly and may sometimes …

Exploring The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And Information Security Culture, Joo S. Lim, Shanton Chang, Sean Maynard, Atif Ahmad

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Managing Information Security is becoming more challenging in today’s business because people are both a cause of information security incidents as well as a key part of the protection from them. As the impact of organizational culture (OC) on employees is significant, many researchers have called for the creation of information security culture (ISC) in organizations to influence the actions and behaviour of employees towards better organizational information security. Although researchers have called for the creation of ISC to be embedded in organizations, nonetheless, literature suggests that little past research examining the relationship between the nature of OC and ISC. …

Evaluation Of Windows Servers Security Under Icmp And Tcp Denial Of Service Attacks, Hari Krishnea Vallalacheruvu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Securing server from Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks is a challenging task for network operators. DDOS attacks are known to reduce the performance of web based applications and reduce the number of legitimate client connections. In this thesis, we evaluate performance of a Windows server 2003 under these attacks. In this thesis, we also evaluate and compare effectiveness of three different protection mechanisms, namely SYN Cache, SYN Cookie and SYN proxy protection methods, to protect against TCP SYN DDoS attacks. It is found that the SYN attack protection at the server is more effective at lower loads of SYN …

A new kind of Internet threat has emerged. Hacking is increasingly being used as a weapon by individuals to promote their political ideologies by engaging in distributed citizen-based warfare. Their aim is to disrupt communications using internet enabled networks and organisations. Examples of these online assaults during 2009 were evident during the Iranian protests and the Melbourne International Film Festival. Such attacks use denial of service techniques and utilised social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and You Tube to post links to access hacking instructions. Posts on social networking websites and news stories from a variety of sources online, …
