Introduction

The term "fatty acids" was first applied principally to saturated, monobasic carboxylic acids and especially to long chain acids derived from animal and vegetable oils. As time passed and the knowledge of natural fats increased, polyunsaturated, hydroxy, keto and branched chain acids were also found as constituents of these fats and oils and these also came under the heading of fatty acids. Even acids containing alicyclic substituents were found.

It was the purpose of this survey to determine what constitutes effective and ineffective clinical instruction from the student's viewpoint, and to make the findings available. The descriptive survey method using the critical incident technique was used as the method of research. A critical incident report form was constructed as a tool for gathering the data. There were 117 students of nursing who submitted 166 incidents; 52 per cent were of effective instruction and 48 per cent of ineffective instruction.

In soil science we shall always be confronted with reactions in soils that involve Ca. Early recognition of this led to experimentation in this area. Due to the fact that Ca deficiency is most common in acid soils, the majority of the experimentation has in the past been largely confined to acid soils and their soil-Ca-plant relationships. There has been relatively little research done with Ca and its availability problems associated with alkaline or sodic soils.

In this article Heelan argues that the return to the concrete and empirical implied in Heisenberg's insight on the importance of observables in physics was not, however, in Heisenberg's case, accompanied by a thorough re-thinking of the rationalist presuppositions of classical physics. From theoretical consideration involving a rationalized dimensional analysis of the rainfall-runoff phenomena, dimensionless products of the pertinent variables are derived. These dimensionless products guided the design and construction of a rainstorm simulator and topographic model. The design and construction of these two basic elements of the physical hydrologic model are described. A description of the instrumentation and several relevant calibration tests is followed by a discussion of two preliminary verification test sets. The tests indicated that some necessary refinements in equipment and instrumentation were needed before more precise experimental data could be obtained. In this chapter Heelan discusses how Heisenberg's insight of 1925, that physics should concern itself henceforth only with relations between observables, changed the intentionality-structure of physics. This insight led Heisenberg to the construction of a quantum mechanics of observables. Three caves of the central part of the Bulgarian Balkan (Stara planina, close to the village of Etropolé) host cavernicolous beetles of the subfamily Bathysciinae (family of Catopidae) that constitute a new genus of the Brachyscapes group. In this paper the diagnosis of this new troglobe genus together with the description of the type species Balcanobius etropolensis, gen.n., sp.n. are given. The new genus is then inserted in the dichotomic table as defined by R. Jeannel, placing it close to the other two Yugoslavian genus Parapropus and Spelaeodromus.

"The fungus, Hygrophorous conicus, produces the enzyme, indole acetic acid oxidase, when grown in the presence of indole acetic acid (IAA) or tryptamine. The IAA acts both as an inducer and a substrate for this intracellular enzyme. The product of the oxidation catalyzed by the IAA oxidase is oxindole acetic acid (OIAA). Since the IAA and OIAA absorb maximally at two different wavelengths the use of spectrophotometric analysis was possible for assaying for the IAA oxidase activity. "An inverted torsion pendulum for measuring the internal friction and dynamic shear modulus of glass fibers over an extended temperature range has been constructed and calibrated. The calibration consists of the determination of the moment of inertia. Extraneous damping losses were investigated and primary sources were found to be (1) the suspension thread, (2) the method of securing the fiber and (3) air damping. "The 'Old Workings Area,' so called for its early mining by the Incas, is located 4 1/2 miles northeast of the El Salvador Porphyry copper deposit, the third largest copper producer in Chile. The area mapped in this study is shown to consist of rhyolite pebble conglomerate, two volcanic flows, andesite and rhyolite porphyry, and two intrusions. Quartz porphyry and tourmaline-bearing breccia. Petrographic study of surface and drill core rock samples confirms the field nomenclature used for the five rock types. All of the rock types are altered, but the quartz porphyry and andesite are the most intensely altered. Both …

"Otoliths are calcareous structures occurring in the auditory labyrinths of teleost (bony) fishes. Three pairs of these earstones normally are found: the sagitta, in the sacculus; the asteriscus, in the lagena; and the lapillus in the utriculus. In fishes other than the Order cypriniformes (carp, catfishes, and related forms), the sagitta is the largest otolith, and it may be used in taxonomic and other studies. Fossil earstones of cuskeels (Family Ophidiiae-Brotulidae), constituting the Preophidion complex, occur in relative abundance at various levels in the Claiborne, Jackson, and Vicksburg groups of the Lower Tertiary on the Gulf Coast. Algological investigations carried out in the Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, revealed the presence of twenty-seven taxa representing all divisions of the Algae except the Pyrrhophyta and Phaeophyta; diatoms although observed in the samples were not dealt with in the present paper. One species, Oscillitoria clausiana spec. nov. and a form Lyngbya pusilla fa. tenuior fa. nov., both belonging to the Cyanophyta are new to science. A 13-month study of a hard-water lake in northeast Ohio has provided a quantitative and qualitative record of the seasonal changes of the phytoplankton. Maximum production occurred during the summer and winter periods. The summer pulse was dominated by the cyanophyte species: Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena spiroides, A. circinalis, and Aphanizomenon flosaquae. The dominants of the winter pulse were the diatoms Fragilaria crotomensis and Asterionella formosa, which formed separate peaks under an ice cover in December and January, respectively. The geomorphology and glacial geology of the north half of Barnes County in east central North Dakota is described and interpreted. The area comprised a portion of the Western Lake section of the Central Lowland province and was informally designated the Middle Sheyenne River area without defining its boundaries. The chenistry of diamino dicarboxylic acids together with that of monoamino dicarboxylie and monocarboxylic acids in of great importance to the chemist because of the rolation- ship of these compounds to the biochemistry of cancer.

Diamino dicarboxylic acids in general, contain two asymmetric carbon atoms and may exist in one optically inactive and two optically active forma. Alpha-omoga diamino pinolic acid is the only member of the alpha-omoga diamino dicarboxylic acids thus far known to occur naturally.

V. Fock studied the hydrogen atom problem in momentum space by projecting the space onto a 4-dimensional hyper-sphere. He found that as a consequence of the symmetry of the problem in this space the eigen-functions are the R₄ spherical harmonics and that the eigenvalues are determined only by the principal quantum number n. In this chapter we note that if his method is applied to the 2-dimensional Kepler problem in momentum space, the eigenfunctions are the R₃ spherical harmonics, Y_1m, and the eigenvalues are determined only by the quantum number 1. The independent interconversion of alpha-N-carbobenzoxy-D-glucosaminide to the beta- form, and vice versa, suggests that the proper treatment of the rate data must involve a system of opposing reactions. It is evident from the data cited in the preceding chapter that such opposing rates must necessarily involve the HCl which is included in the reaction mixture. Thus, as the first approach to the analyzed data, it is reasonable to suppose that the rate law for opposing second-order rates will apply. The problem taken for investigation was discovered when a cryostat needed for use in polarography in liquid ammonia (the original problem) was found broken. For experience it was decided to turn to another form of nonaqueous polarography while the parts were on order. Materials remaining from a previous diamine investigation by Foss (21) were found in the laboratory. After reading the dissertation in which they had been used, it was decided to reproduce some of the results that had been previously obtained. "The purpose of this thesis was to study the amount and distribution of gold in the minerals of the Marysville quartz diorite stock, Montana. Twenty-eight rock samples were collected from various parts of the Marysville Stock, using a NS-EW grid sample pattern. Thirty additional samples were collected from selected localities and from the vicinity of the gold mines which occur around the periphery of the stock. By use of a hand magnet and a Frantz isodynamic separator, the magnetite, biotite, hornblende, and quartz-feldspar portions of the various rock samples were isolated and purified to between 90-99 percent purity.
