Reactions are constantly taking place all around us. They are the basis of chemistry. Without reactions, there could be no change, and, therefore, no chemistry. Most reactions can be easily visualized; as, for instance, when two liquids are mixed together, or two gases, or a gas and a liquid. When reactions between these substances take place, we take it as a matter of course. There is another type of reaction, however, which does take place, but which is not easily visualized. My interest in liquid potassium soaps began a number of years ago. At this time I was employed at a company that manufactured various cleaning preparations, one of these being a liquid soap prepared by the interaction of potassium hydroxide and cocoanut oil. It was there that I first became acquainted with techniques and problems encountered in the soap industry.

The aim of this research is as follows:
- To determine the feasibility of using gelatin as a substrate for hyaluronidase.
- To determine the optimum pH for the enzyme acting upon a gelatin substrate.
- To determine qualitatively and quantitatively if reducing sugars are present in the substrate after action by the enzyme.
The work on hyaluronidase is relatively new. However it is the most extensively studies mucolytic enzyme.

Leonard Driss reported that urine contained an ether soluble factor capable of reducing the viscosity of a gelatin solution.
This thesis intends to further investigate-this point · and to determine the nature of the viscosity reducing factor. Also, to further investigate the phenomena reported by Driss that male urines obtained soon after emission had a greater amount of this viscosity reducing factor than normal urine.

In this investigation, attention is directed to the phases covered by a 28 per cent tin alloy. When the investigation was started, consideration was given to the possibility of making a Time - Temperature - Transformation curve for this particular alloy. As the work progressed and further research was carried on, this phase of the work was abandoned.

In the field of copper metallurgy, the major changes effected in the original metallurgical scheme have been based largely upon the lowering in grade of copper ores, and the more particular demands of the fabricators of the metal. The use of foraminifera in the determination of geologic age, and in the correlation of strata, is one of the most important techniques in oil field stratigraphic studies. The petroleum industry in many regions relies on these microscopic life forms to determine the positions of oil-bearing horizons and to determine the tops of beds. In northern Montana the Colorado group of strata, a series of about 2,000 feet of dense, dark similar shales, is known to contain foraminifers.

Many important industrial applications for fatty acids and their derivatives are based on the ability of the unsaturated members of a series to combine with other molecules through the reactivity of their double bonds.
Investigators for quite some time have sought means and methods for determining the number and the position of these double bonds and correlating the results as a means of identification for the unsaturation in fats and oils. For some time there has been a noticeable trend toward a more strictly quantitative outlook in paleontology. In view of many special circumstances encountered in dealing with fossil material, there is a rather extended consideration here given to the theoretical background of the quantitative method as applied to fossil invertebrates. First there is a consideration of the relations between sampling theory and paleontology. This is followed by a discussion of variability in populations and the problem of inference from sample to population. After reading the Masters Thesis of Mr. Herman L. Karl, the writer became interested in this problem and then took · up the study of the proteolytic activity of normal urine. Mr. Karl worked on the urine of pregnant women. Using gelatin as a substrate, he hoped to find a difference in proteolytic activity between the urine of a woman pregnant with a male fetus and the urine of a woman pregnant with a female fetus. His results were not conclusive but suggested that the problem of proteolytic action of urine should be studied under normal conditions.

A variety of paleontologic and stratigraphic problems are presented by rocks near the Mississippian- Pennsylvanian boundary in the central and northern Rocky Mountains. Stratigraphic sections of these rocks show diverse interpretations of fundamental concepts of stratigraphy and paleontology. In many places where Upper Mississippian rocks directly underlie Pennsylvanian rocks it is difficult to determine the precise location of the boundary between these units. Formations that straddle the boundary are very useful and satisfactory over large areas. Most geologists use various types of lithologic criteria to distinguish formations, but some appear to rely mainly on faunal data, unconformities, or attempts to …

Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the soils of Ellis County could be used to form waterproof soil blocks that might be used for construction. In the investigation eight soils found in the county were employed and several stabilizers added to each in varying amounts to determine if the specific soils could be rendered waterproof. Several types of paint finishes were tested. The work was divided into three main parts: (1) Survey of Ellis County Soils; (2) Selection of soil material with respect to shrinkage; and (3) Treatment of soils with respect to waterproofing.

Imports of manganese ore probably supply a major proportion of the needs of the United States. Domestic production is reported to be higher than pre-war levels, but does not equal that of the peak production year of 1943. In 1946, the Anaconda Copper Mining Company accounted for 90 percent of the total shipments of manganese nodules, and this company is the largest producer of domestic metallurgical ore in the United States.

The term diffusion means an equalization or homogenization of diverse materials. Specifically applied to metals, diffusion is the interchange of atoms. Even though there are many practical applications using the conductance of fused salts, such as the commercial preparation of aluminum, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, there is very little in the literature on such conductance.
Because organic compounds as a class do not conduct as well as acids, bases, and salts, even less attention has been paid to the conductance of organic compounds in the fused state. Since the author has had some experience with organic preparations, it seemed worth while to prepare certain types of related heterocyclic organic compounds and to test their conductance in the fused state.

To materially aid in the identification of a series of organic compounds one must develop a new system of derivatives or suggest better methods for preparing known derivatives. The problem of characterizing alkyl halides is one in which there is room for improvement, for the best derivatives of these compounds are now prepared by means of the Grignard reaction which may often fail to give satisfactory results. Utah's thousands of square miles of mountains, plateaus, and i ~ desert basins exhibit a wide variety of geological features and offer the student of geology an endless series of challenging problems.
