Mineral Composition In Relation To Particle Size For A Missouri Plastic Fire Clay, John Edward May Jan 1951

Mineral Composition In Relation To Particle Size For A Missouri Plastic Fire Clay, John Edward May

Masters Theses

"From the rather modest beginning of the refractory industry in Missouri prior to the Civil War, the industry has grown to challenge those of other states as the third largest producer of refractory clays and products in the United States. As Roberts (1950) points out, the development of the metallurgical and glass industries increased the demand for high grade refractory materials. A prominent factor in the development of the fire clays of Missouri was the discovery that flint clay could be mixed with the plastic or semi-plastic refractory clays to yield an excellent product. Perhaps the most important reason many …

Radiolaria From The Porters Creek Formation (Paleocene, Midway Group) Of Stoddard County, Missouri, Eldridge Sellers Middour

Masters Theses

"Fossil Radiolaria are described and figured from the Porters Creek formation (Paleocene) of Ardeola, Stoddard County Missouri. This is the first detailed treatment of fossil radiolarians from the Gulf Coast area. Thirty-one species are described and figured, all believed to be new, belonging to twenty-four genera. Fifteen families are represented, ten referable to the Legion Spumellaria, five to the Legion Nassellaria. Stratigraphic descriptions or the section at Ardeola is presented, and a discussion of laboratory techniques is included"--Abstract, page 3.

Square Wave Modulation, Richard Henry Duncan Jan 1951

Square Wave Modulation, Richard Henry Duncan

Masters Theses

"Modulation of a radio frequency carrier can be defined as the variation of some wave parameter such as amplitude, frequency, or phase, in accordance with intelligence to be transmitted. An unmodulated carrier is simply a continuous sine wave and contains no information other than the fact that the transmitter has been turned on. The spectrum of an unmodulated signal consists of a single frequency. Any type of modulation is characterized by the appearance of additional frequencies, known as sidebands. One of the fundamental problems in radio engineering is to reduce the number of sidebands to a minimum and still adequately …

Intermediate Compounds In The Synthesis Of Lignin, Paul Spencer Gakle Jan 1951

Intermediate Compounds In The Synthesis Of Lignin, Paul Spencer Gakle

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis of a keto-aldehyde from salicylaldehyde and benzaldehyde was attempted. The first step was to protect the carbonyl with a non-reactive group.

The bisulfite addition product and the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone of salicylaldehyde were prepared. The methyl acetal, the sodium bisulfite addition product, and the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone of benzaldehyde were also prepared.

The bisulfite addition of both aldehydes was found to be too unstable in the presence of aldehyde was recovered in each case. The methyl acetyl chloride also decomposed. This necessitated finding a more stable group to protect the aldehyde.

The 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone was unaffected by treatment with anhydrous aluminum chloride in …

The Pleistocene Geology Of The Middle ·Portion Of The Elkhorn River Valley, W. D. Frankforter Jul 1950

The Pleistocene Geology Of The Middle ·Portion Of The Elkhorn River Valley, W. D. Frankforter

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The present report is a physiographic and paleontologic approach to the Pleistocene history of a portion of the Elkhorn River Valley in parts of Dodge, Cuming and Stanton counties in northeastern Nebraska. The area is important for correlation of deposits between the glacial and periglacial regions. Some of the critical stratigraphic units used for correlation in the Pleistocene of these regions are present in close association with the tills and contain fossils which make possible reliable statements on contemporaneity of deposits. The subsequent geologic history and present physiographic expression of this area have been greatly controlled and influenced by the …

Certain Coordination Compound Of The Element Thallium, David Albert Hill Roethel Jun 1950

Certain Coordination Compound Of The Element Thallium, David Albert Hill Roethel

Bachelors’ Theses

While pursuing courses at Marquette University, my curiosity was constantly piqued by that group of elements classified as the rarer elements. Because of its somewhat unusual properties, thallium in particular aroused my interest and I decided that I should like to investigate the element further to my own satisfaction. While thallium in all its ramifications has been studied at one time or another, comparatively little work has been done upon the coordination compounds that the element forms. In 1909 a German chemist, Gewecke, did a limited amount of work with these coordination compounds but since then very little has been …

Physiographic Surfaces And Weathering Near Butte, Gordon B. Brox

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Three cycles of erosion have modified the Boulder batholith. The earliest cycle produced a peneplaination that has been largely obliterated by a partially completed intermediate cycle, and the recent cycle now in progress.

An Investigation Of The Gallium-Indium Binary System, Allen D. Kennedy May 1950

An Investigation Of The Gallium-Indium Binary System, Allen D. Kennedy

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Twenty-four alloys, at 5 weight per cent or smaller intervals, were investigated by the thermal method. Very low temperatures had to be attained, because most of the alloy melts supercooled remarkably. Analysis showed only a liquidus and solidus line, and the solidus temperature was the same for each alloy.

The Renova "Syenite" Porphyry Madison County, Montana, James H. Clement May 1950

The Renova "Syenite" Porphyry Madison County, Montana, James H. Clement

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Unique feldspar porphyries, syenitic in appearance, and granitic in composition, form an unusually thick sill intruding pre-Cambrian Belt graywacke about eight miles south of Whitehall in southwestern Montana. Commercial deposits of gold and silver ores occur nearby, and may possibly be genetically related to the porphyry, although direct association is not evident. The geologic age is believed to be late Cretaceous or early Tertiary, and the sill may be related to the Tobacco Root batholith.

Geology Of Smoke Hollow Area 8 Miles Southeast Of Deerlodge, Powell County, Montana, Floyd C. Bossard May 1950

Geology Of Smoke Hollow Area 8 Miles Southeast Of Deerlodge, Powell County, Montana, Floyd C. Bossard

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This investigation was undertaken primarily as a problem in geologic mapping. The stratigraphy was studied as to the character, age, and sequence of the geologic formations that are exposed. The conclusions were based principally on the field relationships and lithology because no fossils were found.

Was Assimilation Important In The Formation Of The Boulder Batholith?, Richard Marvin May 1950

Was Assimilation Important In The Formation Of The Boulder Batholith?, Richard Marvin

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Examination of a rock suite from the northern end of the Boulder batholith reveals that four of the eight criteria for assimilation as given by Grout are present. Thus, in the opinion of the writer, there is evidence and trends to signify assimilation, but no indication of the importance that it played in the formation of the Boulder batholith.

Fluorescent Effects Produced By Rare Earth Elements, William J. Stekiel May 1950

Fluorescent Effects Produced By Rare Earth Elements, William J. Stekiel

Bachelors’ Theses

The subject matter of this thesis had its origin in a phenomena observed in the laboratory during a crystal analysis experiment by means of X-ray diffraction. While using crystals composed mainly of Neodynium and related rare earths as specimens, it was found that an unaccountable darkening of the film occurred in the region near the sample. This excessive darkening (over and above the normal amount produced by incident X-rays) was attributed to some type of back scattering of radiant energy produced by the crystalline elements composing the sample. Thus, the problem of this thesis was to carry out some simple …

Electrometric Microdetermination Of Water In Tungsten And Molybdenum Metal Powders By The Karl Fischer Reagent, Helen C. Efinger May 1950

Electrometric Microdetermination Of Water In Tungsten And Molybdenum Metal Powders By The Karl Fischer Reagent, Helen C. Efinger

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of the determination of the moisture content or metal powders has been suggested by the Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation, where I was formerly employed, as one which might prove of interest to them. I have been particularly interested in a topic of this nature since my only laboratory experience has been in metallurgical chemistry.

In this work I intend to make a comparison and evaluation of various methods of determining the moisture content of tungsten and molybdenum powders in order to show which would be the most applicable. Most of the common methods for determining the amount of moisture …

The Franklin Basin branch is the main contributing tributary while the Beaver Creek branch is nearly as large.

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla Mar 1950

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

SUMMARY

Laboratory tests were made to determine the effectiveness of different compounds and microbial groups in increasing the stability of Peorian loess lumps against the action of falling water drops. The influence of these on percolation tests in the laboratory was also determined.

Many organic substances-dextrose, sucrose, starch, peptone, cullulose, and gum arabic-did not themselves contribute directly to soil-structure stability, though these substances do furnish energy material for soil microorganisms, which can convert them readily into either microbial tissue or decomposition products that increase soil-structure stability. Lignin, proteins, oils, fats, waxes, resin, and paraffin increased the stability of lumps of …

A Study Of Alcoholysis Using Methyl Esters And Tall Oil, Raymond Martin Frey Jan 1950

A Study Of Alcoholysis Using Methyl Esters And Tall Oil, Raymond Martin Frey

Bachelors’ Theses

One of the Easiest ways of preparing new esters is by heating an ester with another alcohol which frequently permits transfer of the acid radical from the original ester to the added alcohol, thous forming a new ester and liberating the other alcohol. Preparation of triglycerides of unsaturated fatty acids of 18 carbon atoms is hampered by the fact that prolonged heating in the usual ester formation methods causes both polymerization and condensation among acid radicals unless oxygen is carefully excluded from the reaction atmosphere. Consequently a method of acid interchange might afford the triglycerides at a faster rate and …

An Ecological Study Of The Foraminifera Of Mason Inlet, North Carolina, Daniel N. Miller Jr. Jan 1950

An Ecological Study Of The Foraminifera Of Mason Inlet, North Carolina, Daniel N. Miller Jr.

Masters Theses

"Mason Inlet. North Carolina is a lagoonal marsh area with warm-temperate water, the salinity ranging from fresh to salt water. Nine collecting stations comprise an ecological gradient across the environment.

Forty-two species of foraminifera are recorded from the inlet, ranging in their affinities from brackish water to open-sea facies. Several extensions of range are recorded both northward and southward.

Substratum conditions apparently control the distribution of foraminifera within the inlet. Clean, fine sand provided the largest faunal populations. A depauperate assemblage was found in an inorganic, argillaceous substratum. The largest population of arenaceous forms was found at the channel through …

Geology Of The Crystal Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, John Amsden Emery Jan 1950

Geology Of The Crystal Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, John Amsden Emery

Masters Theses

"The study of the geology and mineralization of the Crystal Mine was undertaken at the suggestion of Mr. Dodson G. Gibson of the Crystal Fluorspar Company, who allowed access to the mine and its records for this purpose. The problem was to develop a system of prospecting the so-called bedded-replacement fluorspar deposits of Hardin County, Illinois. It is believed that an economically feasible method has been developed. This method involves not only the actual finding of fluorspar, but also serves as a guide in revealing structural trends suggestive of mineralization.

The fluorspar deposits of the Crystal Mine are representative of …
