Very little work has been done with vanillic acid and its derivatives since the time when the acid was first synthesized. There are usually good reasons why compounds showing such important properties as food preservatives have lain idle for over seventy-five years. It is of great. interest to know the reasons behind this idleness and also to attempt to prepare some of the derivatives heretofore unreported.

However, work on ester hydrolysis soon took the stage in preference as the reaction most favorable to the study of reaction rates. The California Quail is native to the coastal and semi-arid regions of California extending north into Oregon. Two subspecies are commonly recognized. the California Quail (Lophortyx californica brunnescens Ridgway), and the Valley Quail (Lophortyx californica californica Shaw). The two forms are very similar in coloration and habits and, for the purpose of this study, no effort is made to distinguish the two.

Until rather recently little has been known of the Drosophila species of Nebraska. Sturtevant (1921) lists Nebraska as one of seven states from which no Drosophila had been reported. Patterson and Wagner (1943) show that collections of Drosophila pseudoobscura had been made in the vicinities of Scottsbluff and Kearney, but no other Drosophila species are reported from Nebraska in their publication.

The moisture content is, of critical importance in the production of active dry yeast. The problem grew out of an explosive evaluation project that was conducted by the Mining Department, Missouri School of Mines. A very valuable reagent in organic characterization work is benzoyl chloride. By interacting benzoyl chloride with any one of the general classes of compounds termed phenols, alcohols, and amines, solid and very satisfactory derivatives are usually produced. However, the action of this compound occurs rather slowly and the operator, unless especially careful, suffers from the lachrimatory effects of the reagent, benzoyl chloride. A sample was submitted to my major professor, Dr. C. R. Haymaker, by Gene LaFave who claimed that it was benzoyl acid sulfate. Measurements of reflectivity of opaque ore minerals can be made with the common photographic light meter and a standard reflecting microscope, both of which are available to most Geology laboratories. During the course of the investigation, approximately 30 minerals were examined, of which 10 were duplicates. Comparable results, for the most part within 3% of previously determined valued, were obtained.

The oldest system in which identifiable invertebrate fossils have been found is the Cambrian. The basal Cambrian formation found in Montana is the Flathead sandstone and quartzite of Middle Cambrian age. No fossils have been reported from this formation. Above the Flathead is the Wolsey formation composed of green fissile shale with sandy and limy members. This fossiliferous member of the Middle Cambrian is known in Northwestern Montana as Gordon, and in the Philipsburg quadrangle as the Silver Hill formation.

A preparative investigation was made by Mr. Robert Johnson of alkyl chlorobenzoates, by substitution of benzoyl chlorides on aloohols, since various benzoyl chlorides are now available com­mercially.
