The Design And Construction Of An Electrolytic Cell For Aluminum Reduction, Thomas H. Melrose

The purpose of this investigation was to design and construct a laboratory size electrolytic cell in which to reduce alumina, using the same basic materials that are used in a commercial size cell. The cell was designed to have a capacity of approxi­mately 100 grams of metallic aluminum produced every 8 hours. The cell was constructed so it could be operated continuously.

This paper deals with a theorem of Gelfand and Kolmogoroff concerning the ring C= C(X, R) of all continuous real-valued functions on a completely regular topological space X, and the subring C* = C*(X, R) consisting of all bounded functions in C. The theorem in question yields a one-one correspondence between the maximal ideals of C and those of C*; it is stated without proof in [2]. Here we supply a proof (§2), and we apply the theorem to three problems previously considered by Hewitt in [5].

This study investigates the chemical and physical properties of various soil types in St. Charles County, Missouri, with a primary focus on their cation exchange capacities. The author examines how plants obtain essential nutrients through an exchange process where root hairs release hydrogen ions in trade for metallic cations like calcium, magnesium, and potassium held on the surface of clay and humus colloids. To provide a comprehensive assessment of soil productivity, the research utilizes a photoelectric colorimeter to measure seven key components: organic matter, extractable phosphorus, pH, and exchangeable hydrogen, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

It is generally accepted that soil structure is very important in keeping productivity at a high level. When soils are loose and friable, mechanical impedance to root growth and seedling emergence is greatly reduced. Such soils infiltrate greater quantities of precipitation, are better aerated, and possess a more favorable temperature than puddled soils. "The type locality of the Archusa marl member of the Wautubbee formation is situated south of Quitman, Clarke County, Mississippi. Stratigraphically, the unit falls within the middle Eocene Claiborne group, being roughly equivalent to the upper part of the Lisbon formation of Alabama and the lower part of the Cook Mountain. The marl falls within the Ostrea sellaefonnis zone and the zone of "Ceratobulimina eximia.” The type section consists of 48 feet of sandy marls, with a thin oyster bed near the middle.

The radiations from Sm¹⁵³ and Eu¹⁵⁵ have been studied by means of a 180-degree, magnetic-focusing, variable-field beta-ray spectrometer-spectrograph using enriched materials. In the disintegration of 47.0-hr Sm¹⁵³, conversion electrons of three gamma rays of energy, 0.0691, 0.1027, 0.548 Mev, and three beta-ray spectra whose end-point energy and relative intensity were 0.255 Mev, 9 percent; 0.685 Mev, 70 percent; 0.795 Mev, 21 percent, respectively, were observed. A fourth beta-ray spectrum of end-point energy 0.62 Mev and intensity less than 6 percent is postulated. A decay scheme in good agreement with these data and with nuclear shell theory …
