Food and energy transformation in an aquatic system must be understood in order to develop a simulation approach. This report provides a comprehensive study of an aquatic ecosystem. The objectives of this report are to show: (1) the biological relationships in an aquatic system (2) the role of nutrients in the biological cycle (3) the role of abiotic factors in a limnetic environment (4) the status of the art of "Eutrophication modeling".

Radiation detection and damage data from several physical, chemical, and biological systems have been analyzed by a unified track theory, in which observed effects are attributed to the interaction of secondary electrons with the medium. Gamma-ray dose-response curves are combined with calculations of the spatial dose distribution about an ion's path to yield dose-response curves (survival curves) for heavy ion bombardment, through appropriately defined parameters. Perplexing phenomena associated with high LET radiation are sorted out according to track regime (grain-count or track-width), inactivation mode (gamma-kill or ion-kill), structural complexity (elementary, cellular, multicellular), and end-point. The generic rev1s1on of the Pterodectinae, new subfamily of the Proctophyllodidae, is based on 88 named and over 160 new species. Included are morphology, host-parasite relationships, diagnoses of four named and eight new genera, and illustrations of each type species. The named genera are:

Anisodiscus Gaud and Mouchet, 1957; Montesauria Oudemans, 1905; Proterothrix Gaud, 1968; Pterodectes Robin, 1877. Micrographs of energetic particles in nuclear emulsion are simulated by computing the spatial distribution of developed grains with the δ-ray theory of track structure, and representing the developed grains by points of light on an IBM 2250 visual display unit. A theoretical and experimental investigation of a number of transition-metal complexes was conducted. The compounds of primary interest were six-coordinated complexes containing group VIII metal ions belonging to the second and third transition series. The investigation involved the synthesis and purification of the compounds, the measurement of absorption and emission spectra and luminescent lifetimes, and the analysis of the observed spectral properties using a crystal-field model based on solutions of large secular determinants. The primary productivity of a small gravel pit lake in the Platte River Valley of Nebraska was studied for a 2-year period. Daily production rates were estimated from near weekly samples, with calculations done by computer. Emphasis was placed on production under ice during winter conditions. Annual production was estimated and is compared with several other lakes in North America.

Grain Sorghum In The Ord Valley : Three Crops A Year?, P J. May

High temperatures and ample irrigation water allow grain sorghum to be grown throughout the year on the Ord River Irrigation Area, and observations in 1969-70 indicated that it may be possible in this area to produce three crops in one year from one planting, by ratoon cropping.

This article describes the technique and discusses its possibilities on the Ord.

The sorghum midge, one of the worst pests of sorghum, could well make ratoon cropping impossible, but the midge has not yet been seen in this area.

Water qualities of two natural streams (Buffalo and Kings Rivers), one new coId-tailwater (Beaver), and two old coId-tailwaters (Norfork and Bull Shoals) in northwestern Arkansas were studied from July 1965 through October 1968. The essential difference between the old cold-tailwaters and natural streams is a change in water quality which allows the development of a new productive ecological environment. Features which typify the old tailwaters are as follows: (1) relatively homioithermal temperatures; (2) stream beds scoured by strong hydoelectric power generation currents; (3) abundant phytoplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates; and (4) absence of warm water game fishes. Our aquatic environments are rapidly becoming useless as natural resources through pollution from various sources. It is therefore necessary for us to further understand the various means which relate to this process. The interrelationships between the physico-chemical and biological water qualities undergo marked changes during the ageing of a reservoir. Eutrophication of these impoundments render them rela-tively useless as natural resources. It thus becomes apparent that we must gain further knowledge of these processes if we are to devise methods for proper reservoir management.

Millstream has long been recognised as an unique and outstanding area, both scenically and from a biological aspect. The area of prime interest consists of a series of deep pools in the bed of the Fortescue River (about 15 miles long including Gregory Gorge) and the springs and streams which feed them. Most of the springs are in the sides of the river bed but one of the largest is about 1% miles to the south. This feeds a swift flowing stream running north into the river bed.
