The familiar x ² test is ordinarily used to compare percentage distributions of categorical data for two or more independent samples. A more accurate com parison of the percentages is sometimes obtained if the samples consist of matched individuals. The NcNemar test is generally used when comparing only two related samples. Where there are three or more samples the Cochran Q test is used. Both of these tests apply only to the case of dichotomized responses. This thesis extends the Cochran Q test to the case where the responses are multinomial. A generalized statistic corresponding to Cochran's result is obtained. …

The rapid deposition of energy by means of a pulsed ruby laser to degrade organic and inorganic materials is investigated as an analytical tool. Advantages and disadvantages of using a laser are discussed and compared to current conventional pyrolysis methods. The interaction of laser radiation with matter is briefly discussed. A number of different organic compounds including saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic compounds, and polymers have been studied. The degradation products were separated and identified by use of a gas chromatograph. Degradation studies have also been done on a series of inorganic salts including nitrates, sulfates, thiosulfates, and oxalates. The …

Impoundment of the Caddo River near Arkadelphia, Arkansas began in August, 1969. Detailed patterns of the dissolved oxygen distribution in this reservoir are presented for the period September, 1969 through April, 1971. Although the reservoir had not reached normal pool elevation, thermal stratification accompanied by severe hypolimnic oxygen depletion has been observed. The dissolved oxygen data show that an under flow occurs in the fall of the year and carries dissolved oxygen into the hypolimnic zone. The gradients of dissolved oxygen concentration observed during the winter indicate that the reservoir does not undergo complete mixing. A short summary of the …

An investigation of the rate of littoral transport by an analysis of wave energy for the area from Cape Henry, Virginia to the Virginia, North Carolina border is made. Wave refraction diagrams are done by digital computer. Total upcoast (northerly) transport is determined to be 2.05 x 10⁶ yds³/year. Total downcoast (southerly) transport is determined to be 1.07 x 10⁶ yds³/year. Net transport is determined to be 9.8 x 10⁵ yds³/year in an upcoast (northerly) direction. The need for new antimicrobial and antifungal agents as well as medicinals possessing antiprotozoal activity against special strains of malaria resistant to most synthetic antimalarials prompted the synthesis of new compounds that may have the desired antimetabolite properties. The structural similarities of the 1,2,5-thiadiazolo[3,4-d] pyridazines and the v-triazolo[4,5-d]pyridazines with the biologically important purines prompted the synthesis of members of these ring systems. The 1,2,5-thiadiazoles synthesized as intermediates ware also screened as potential chemotherapeutic agents. Similarly, the pyridazine N-oxides and the 5-nitro substituted pyrimidines are structurally similar to the pyrazine N-oxides and the pyridine N-oxides, which are known to possess a …

The Alyeska Pipeline Service Company has the responsibility for the first step in this transportation—to design and construct the Trans Alaska Pipeline System. We will pipe the oil from the discovery areas near Prudhoe Bay to an ice-free, deep-sea tanker loading terminal at Valdez of the South Coast of Alaska. The purpose of this study was to apply the "uniqueness concept" to the quantification of the intangible values of natural streams. The methodology is based on procedures developed by Luna B. Leopold and Maria O. Marchand of the U.S. Geological Survey. It involves the evaluation of a set of characteristics or factors for selected stream sites. Each factor is rated for each site on a numerical scale indicative of the range of possible "values" for that factor. An "uniqueness ratio" (the reciprocal of the number of stream sites sharing a given category rating) is then computed for each stream for …

Analytical and other applications of some quaternary ammonium compounds were studied. Conditions are described for the quantitative determination of perchlorate by precipitation as tetra-n-pentylammonium perchlorate. Results of qualitative studies of interferences from other anions and quantitative studies on the separation and determination of perchlorate in the presence of chlorate are presented. With careful work, relative errors of ± 0.2% can be expected in the range of 50-100 mg of perchlorate, ± 1.0% in the 10-50 mg range, and ± 5.0% in the range from 2-10 mg of perchlorate. It is difficult at best to evaluate the biological and chemical damages of oil pollution, but the physical effects are graphically evident in the blackened beaches and coastlines around the world and in the floating "tar-balls" found in mid-ocean. It is this dramatically visible effect that has stirred public concern. Thus, prevention of such damage is high on the list of priorities for both national and international concern. In the face of the ever increasing potential for pollution, President Nixon has pledged that federal agencies will take the lead in pollution abatement programs.

A Revision Of The Feather Mite Genus Brephosceles (Proctophyllodidae: Alloptinae), Paul C. Peterson

A systematic revision is presented for the genus Brephosceles. Data on external morphology, zoogeography, and host-parasite relationships are included. Thirteen named and thirty new species are recognized and described. Spawning time and habitat of largemouth bass, survival of embryos, and growth and food habits of fingerlings were studied in 1968 and 1969 at Wahweap Bay, Lake Powell. Spawning began in mid- to late-April, when mean daily water temperature at nesting depths was 14.4-15.0 Centigrade (58-59 Fahreheit), and continued until mid-June. Most spawning took place on the northeast shore of the bay. Sandstone rubble was the most commonly used bottom type for nesting, either at the base of ledges or around large sandstone boulders. Mean nest depth increased from 1.63 meter to 4.54 meters (5.36 feet to 14.90 feet) in …

The complexation properties of the two isomers of the cyclic polyether dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 are examined in aqueous solution for a series of metal ions at various reaction temperatures. The results are discussed in terms of size relationships and salvation characteristics of both polyether and metal ions. ΔCp° values are determined from the temperature dependence of the ΔH° values. A discussion of the errors involved in the determination of ΔH° from the temperature dependence of log K values is also included. An estimate was made to determine the amount of nitrate and phosphate entering Utah Lake in 1968. To make this estimate, the flow data for 1968 and the nitrate and phosphate concentrations for 1970 were used. This was done because of the lack of information. The results show that the total nitrate added to Utah Lake in 1968 was 7,638,000 pounds. The total phosphate added was 1,740,200 pounds. Of this amount, 12,4 per cent of the nitrate and 18.0 per cent of the phosphate was released from the lake through the Jordan River. The rest remained in the lake to …

Maximal amounts of prodigiosin were synthesized in either minimal or complete medium after incubation of cultures at 27 C for 7 days. Biosynthesis of prodigiosin began earlier and the range of temperature for formation was greater in complete medium. No prodigiosin was formed in either medium when cultures were incubated at 38 C; however, after a shift to 27 C, pigmentation ensued, provided the period of incubation at 38 C was not longer than 36 hr for minimal medium or 48 hr for complete medium. Washed, nonpigmented cells grown in either medium at 38 C for 72 hr could synthesize …

The effect of the time and rate of application of nitrogen on the yield of high yielding varieties of wheat was studied under the semiarid conditions of Northern Tunisia.

Analysis of the experimental data showed that nitrogen increased the yield of wheat in most locations which were chosen for this experiment.

In high rainfall areas, late application of nitrogen (tillering, jointing stages) was more effective than early applications. The optimum yield was obtained by applying 90 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare.

In the medium to low rainfall area, early applications (seeding time) were more effective than the late ones. The …

Investigations were carried out to study the effect of alternate wetting and drying cycles on the mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification of soil nitrogen in two soils, in the presence or absence of added ammonium and nitrite. Soils were analyzed at the end of each drying cycle for total inorganic nitrogen, ammonium, and nitrite nitrogen. Gaseous products, i.e., ammonia, and the oxides of nitrogen (NO and NO₂) were collected in the course of drying for determination.

The drying cycles accelerated the rate of nitrogen mineralization in both soils and further increased the oxidation of applied and available ammonium. The …

Iron and copper increased the decomposition of nitrite significantly during the first two hours of reaction when 150 parts per million (ppm) of nitrite and nitrogen was added to an acidic soil. Manganese was found to have a slight effect. There was no additional effect of the added metals after two hours reaction time.

The higher concentration of metals was not effective in catalyzing the decomposition of the added nitrite in nitrogen. All the added nitrite nitrogen was not recovered and the deficit could be due to the formation of nitrogen gas.

Approaches to the preparation of echinodithianic acid (5) from 2,5-dicarbomethoxy-1,4-dithiane (1) were not successful, due to the inability to carboxylate or carboalkoxylate 1 at carbons 2 and 5. Studies toward the synthesis of 5 utilizing methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate (8) have been investigated. The electrophilic addition of sulfur dichloride to 8 yielded bis-(2-acetamido-2-carbo-methoxyvin-1-yl) sulfide, while the addition of thiocyanogen chloride to 8 produced methyl 2-acetamido-3-thiocyanato-acrylate.

As electrophilic additions of unsymmetrical dipolar reagents to methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate (8) are not reported in the literature, the addition of hydrogen bromide to 8 was studied to determine the orientation effect of the acetamido group.

A preliminary study of the feasibility of using categorical variables in discriminant function analysis was performed. Data including both continuous and categorical variables were used and predictive results examined.

The discriminant function techniques were found to be robust enough to include the use of categorical variables.

Some problems were encountered with using the trace criterion for selecting the most discriminating variables when these variables are categorical. No monotonic relationship was found to exist between the trace and the number of correct predictions.
