An Artificial Neural Approach To The Decomposition Problem, Chandrashekar L. Masti Jul 1990

An Artificial Neural Approach To The Decomposition Problem, Chandrashekar L. Masti

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to develop an artificial neural approach toward addressing the intractability involved with the decomposition problem. The search for the lattice of substitution property (s. p.) partitions essential to decompositions is cast into the framework of constraint satisfaction. An artificial neural network is developed to provide solutions by performing optimization of a mathematically derived objective function over the problem space. The issue of transitivity is verified to belong to a class of problems beyond the scope of solvability for conventional quadratic-order constraint satisfaction neural networks. A theorem is stated and proved establishing that third-order correlations …

Phytoplankton In Lake Drummond And Two Drainage Ditches In The Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia, Christine Gregory Phillips Jul 1990

Phytoplankton In Lake Drummond And Two Drainage Ditches In The Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia, Christine Gregory Phillips

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A twelve month study was conducted on the phytoplankton of Lake Drummond and Washington and Jericho Ditches from December 1988 to November 1989. Surface water samples were collected for nutrient and chlorophyll analysis from June 1989 to November 1989. The dominant phytoplankton component was the pico-nanoplankton (< 3 micron) category. A total of 57 species were identified from Lake Drummond, 51 species from Washington Ditch, and 31 species from the Jericho Ditch. Three major phytoplankton groups were identified at these sites: bacillariophyceans, cyanophyceans and cryptophyceans. The dominant species was the diatom Asterionella formosa. Nutrient and chlorophyll concentrations increased from summer to fall. Based on nutrient and chlorophyll g concentrations and species diversity indices, Lake Drummond is classified as eutrophic.

Seasonal And Diel Patterns Of Abundance And Productivity Of Phototrophic Picoplankton In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Lewis Francis Affronti Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

This study was performed to evaluate phototrophic pico-plankton (0.2 to 2.0 μm) dynamics within the lower Chesapeake Bay. A 15 month study of phototrophic picoplankton abundance and productivity was made from June 1988 to October 1989. Annual picoplankton abundance using epifluorescence microscopy ranged from 7.26 x 106 cells/1 in the winter to 9.28 x 108 cells/1 during late summer.

In situ incubations of natural picoplankton populations over the 15 month study were used to test the applicability of the frequency of dividing cells technique in estimating phototrophic picoplankton growth rates. The regression equation o fμ = 2.37 x …

Metal Mobilization From A Near-Shore Lake Sediment Under Simulated Acidic Groundwater Inputs, Raveendra V. Ika Jul 1990

Metal Mobilization From A Near-Shore Lake Sediment Under Simulated Acidic Groundwater Inputs, Raveendra V. Ika

OES Theses and Dissertations

Simulation of acidic groundwater passing through lake sediments was conducted under controlled conditions in a laboratory. Three sediment cores collected intact from the near-shore region of an acidic lake were subjected to simulated groundwater inputs of initially identical chemistry for a seven day period. Following this period water being used in the simulation for two of the sediment cores was acidified by hydrochloric acid (HC1) addition to examine the ability of these sediments to neutralize acidic groundwater with varying H+ concentration.

Simulated acidic water passing through the sediment cores mobilized significant amounts of metals. The sediment acted as a …

The Fokker-Planck And Related Equations In Theoretical Population Dynamics, George Derise Jul 1990

The Fokker-Planck And Related Equations In Theoretical Population Dynamics, George Derise

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The population growth of a single species is modeled by a differential equation with initial condition(s) so that the number of organisms in the population is derived using some mechanism of growth, i.e. a growth rate function. However, such deterministic models are often highly unrealistic in population dynamics because population growth is basically a random event. There are a large number of chance factors influencing growth that might not be taken into account by deterministic models. The effect of other species (for example, in the chance meeting of a predator), population fluctuations due to weather changes that would alter food …

Oscillations In Lotka-Volterra Systems Of Chemical Reactions, Roger H. Hering Jun 1990

Oscillations In Lotka-Volterra Systems Of Chemical Reactions, Roger H. Hering

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

For a chemical reaction system modeled by x =k1Ax -k2x2 -k3xy +k4y2, y =k3xy -k4y2 -k5y +k6B, it is shown that for each positive choice of parameters k1A, B there exists a unique stationary state which is globally asymptotically stable in the positive quadrant. A criterion for the non-existence of periodic solutions is given for the generalized Lotka-Volterra system:x = f(x)h(x, y), y. © 1990 J.C. Baltzer AG, Scientific Publishing Company.

Using Management Techniques To Solve Environmental Problems, Patrick D. Kelly Jun 1990

Using Management Techniques To Solve Environmental Problems, Patrick D. Kelly

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Arguing that little effective progress is being made in solving problems of varying urgency, this paper suggests a leadership role for science and engineering societies. It proposes that such societies attempt to prioritize problems and attempt to focus public awareness (and calls to action) in a more systematic way.

Public Accountability Of Advisory Committees, Sidney A. Shapiro Jun 1990

Public Accountability Of Advisory Committees, Sidney A. Shapiro

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

The final paper from the symposium on public participation in Risk management discusses existing procedures for ensuring the integrity of advisory committee recommendations. It concludes that they are inadequate and argues that accountability would be better served if nonexperts were included. It also suggests that, in any event, measures need to be taken to indicate, e.g., the bases for committee conclusions.

Correlation-Dimension Calculations For Broadband Intensity Fluctuations In Emission From A Heavily Saturated Source Of Amplified Spontaneous Emission, B. Das, Alfonso M. Albano, N. B. Abraham Jun 1990

Correlation-Dimension Calculations For Broadband Intensity Fluctuations In Emission From A Heavily Saturated Source Of Amplified Spontaneous Emission, B. Das, Alfonso M. Albano, N. B. Abraham

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Broadband intensity fluctuations from a heavily saturated source of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) operating on the 3.51-μm transition of xenon show no evidence of a dynamical origin represented by a low-dimensional underlying chaotic attractor. The broadband coupled-mode fluctuations in ASE thus seem to be stochastic when contrasted with the recently reported deterministic nature of similar broadband fluctuations of single-mode lasers operating on the same transition.

Fisheries Research Report No. 89 - Relationships Among Partial And Whole Lengths And Weights For Western Australian Pink Snapper Chrysophrys Auratus (Sparidae), M. J. Moran, C. Burton Jun 1990

Fisheries Research Report No. 89 - Relationships Among Partial And Whole Lengths And Weights For Western Australian Pink Snapper Chrysophrys Auratus (Sparidae), M. J. Moran, C. Burton

Fisheries Research Reports

Pink snapper, Chrysophrysauratus (Sparidae) is one of the major commercial and recreational fish in Western Australian inshore waters. This report presents a number of equations and conversion factors for management and scientific study of the species. Equations to calculate total lengths from partial lengths will facilitate enforcement of minimum legal lengths when snapper are landed in a "head-off" condition. For fisheries science purposes, there are equations to convert among total length, standard length and length to caudal fork; and to convert lengths and weights of processed fish to whole lengths and weights. Length-weight relationships are presented and compared with those …

Photoinduced Electron Transfer In Self-Associated Complexes Of Several Uroporphyrins And Cytochrome C, J. S. Zhou, E. S. V. Granada, Neocles B. Leontis, M. A. J. Rodgers Jun 1990

Photoinduced Electron Transfer In Self-Associated Complexes Of Several Uroporphyrins And Cytochrome C, J. S. Zhou, E. S. V. Granada, Neocles B. Leontis, M. A. J. Rodgers

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Photoinduced electron transfer between cytochrome c and free base and metallouroporphyrin (Up, MUp) has been studied. Difference absorption spectrophotometry showed that the electrostatic interactions between Up and cytc(II1) result in their forming a self-associated 1:l complex in the ground state with a binding constant that depends upon the ionic strength. In the complex, the photoexcited uroporphyrin singlet state was quenched through a static interaction with the protein. Even under the most favorable quenching conditions, Le., when all porphyrin was complexed, residual fluorescence was noted. More significantly the excited singlet state of the complex was shown to undergo small, but significant, …

Geology And Economic Potential Of The Muddy Ranch Inlier, North-Central Oregon, Mustafa Kamal Jun 1990

Geology And Economic Potential Of The Muddy Ranch Inlier, North-Central Oregon, Mustafa Kamal

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

There has been confusion for many years regarding the lithology and age of the rocks exposed in the Muddy Ranch Inlier in north-central Oregon. Taylor (1960) referred to these rocks as metasediments and informally named them the "Muddy Ranch phyllite". My studies indicate the inlier consists of weakly metamorphosed siltstone, mudstone, and less abundant sandstone.

Due to the absence of fossil evidence, it was not possible to determine the age of these rocks. However, from the stratigraphic setting and correlation with similar rocks exposed along structural trend to both the northeast and southwest, rocks of the Muddy Ranch Inlier may …

A Modified Nance Unilateral Molar Distalizer, Tracy J. Reiner Jun 1990

A Modified Nance Unilateral Molar Distalizer, Tracy J. Reiner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This clinical study evaluated a modified Nance appliance designed by the author to distalize molars unilaterally for Class II correction. This fixed appliance did not rely upon extraoral traction or intraoral elastics. Twelve unilateral Class II patients aged 13 to 17 were treated nonextraction with the appliance. Pretreatment and posttreatment photographs were taken of the palatal soft tissue and did not reveal any untoward changes as a result of the Nance acrylic button. All molars were corrected to an Angle's Class I relationship. Molar correction was evaluated visually and molar distalization was measured using an acrylic jig fitted to the …

Trends Of Metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Mn, Fe, Hg And Ni) Concentration In The New Jersey Air Environment, Shobha R. Boddu May 1990

Trends Of Metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Mn, Fe, Hg And Ni) Concentration In The New Jersey Air Environment, Shobha R. Boddu

Theses

The atmospheric concentrations and relative trends of ten trace elements (Co, Cd, Fe, Hg, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cr and Mn) were studied at Elizabeth and Carteret, New Jersey from July 1987 to September 1989. The specific sites are Industrial and Residential Interface areas. The analytical procedure involved collection of the airborne particulates on a quartz microfiber filter using a high volume sampler. The samples were digested and then analyzed using the atomic absorption spectrometer. Elizabeth usually showed lower values for the metals than Carteret. Average concentrations (ng/m3) for the respective metals over the entire project are: Metal: Co Cd …

A Comparative Study Of Cadmium Uptake By Cells Of Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Shubhangi Rajan Bhende May 1990

A Comparative Study Of Cadmium Uptake By Cells Of Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Shubhangi Rajan Bhende

Theses

Cadmium uptake by cells of Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacteria was studied. Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacterial cells were separated from activated sludge collected from the Parsippany Troy Hills Water Pollution Control Plant (NJ) by isolating them on agar plates. These were grown separately and used for uptake experiments.

Gram-positive bacterial cells showed 17% more uptake of cadmium as compared to Gram-negative cells at 30°C and pH 6.6. More than 95% of the total cadmium removal from the solution was observed during first 5 min. of cell-metal contact time. In case of Gram-positive bacteria cadmium uptake decreased by 5-10% after …

Biodegradation Of Polymers And Isolation And Crude Characterization Of Proteins From These Studies, Sunil S. Godbole May 1990

Biodegradation Of Polymers And Isolation And Crude Characterization Of Proteins From These Studies, Sunil S. Godbole

Theses

The performance of immobilized and free microorganisms in the biodegradation of polymers was investigated using a recirculation flow reactor and an air-sparged reactor respectively. The bio-oxidation ability of these microbes towards polyamide emulsion was studied.

Extracellular protein cuts isolated were checked for oxidative activity in a microassay reactor. These fractions were compared from various biodegradation studies.

Microassay tests and monitoring of the oxygen consumption in recirculation flow confirmed substrate dependent oxygen consumption, polyamide being provided as the sole carbon source. Increases in extracellular protein buildup were a positive indication of biodegradation.

The protein cut greater than 500,000 daltons was found …

Thermal Desorption Of Contaminated Soils, Chengdi Dong May 1990

Thermal Desorption Of Contaminated Soils, Chengdi Dong

Theses

The objectives of this research are of twofold, namely, to investigate the desorption behaviors of hazardous constituents evolved from several types of contaminated soils, and to evaluate the in-situ thermal treatment of organic chemical contaminated soil.

Two clay soil minerals and a silty sand with five organic compounds, dichlorophenol, trichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene (TCE) were used in this study. The desorption behaviors were evaluated by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and a simulator of in situ desorption by heating probes. The results of TGA analysis revealed that a completely removal of organic contaminants can be achieved in a moderate temperature. They …

Chemical Degradation Of Pcp And Polychlorophenols, Kon-Tsu Kin May 1990

Chemical Degradation Of Pcp And Polychlorophenols, Kon-Tsu Kin

Theses

There are generally two ways of removing PCP and polychlorophenols from the environment: biodegradation and photodecomposition. However, no convenient way has yet been available to destroy PCP wastes which exist in a concentrated form which may result from some cases of emergency spills. In this thesis, a chemical oxidation procedure is proposed for the destruction of PCP and polychlorophenols.

In a water medium and in the presence of base and oxidant, the PCP and model polychlorophenols destruction percentage obtained is higher than 99.8%. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) are utilized as the bases, and sodium hypochlorite …

The Kinetic Study Of Degradation Of The Azo Dyes By Photolytic Ozonation And Photolytic Hydorgen Peroxide Oxidation, Hung-Yee Shu May 1990

The Kinetic Study Of Degradation Of The Azo Dyes By Photolytic Ozonation And Photolytic Hydorgen Peroxide Oxidation, Hung-Yee Shu

Theses

The experiments which study the decomposition of azo dyes such as acid red 1 and acid yellow 23 by using ozonation, photolytic ozonation and photolytic hydrogen peroxide oxidation have been studied in laboratory sized reactor and pilot scale reactor to determine the reaction rate constants.

The rate constants and mass transfer coefficients were obtained by a series of experiments of varying complexity. A reaction kinetic model which describes the contemplated experiments was developed and exercised using the Rosenbrock Hillclimb Optimization Algorithm with the Forth-Order Runge-Kutta method. The effects between different hydrogen peroxide dosages and pH level were also analyzed.

Impacts Of Treated Municipal Waste-Waters On Development And Growth Of Hudson-Raritan Estuary Fishes, Chien-Min Chen May 1990

Impacts Of Treated Municipal Waste-Waters On Development And Growth Of Hudson-Raritan Estuary Fishes, Chien-Min Chen

Theses

The Hudson—Raritan Estuary, known as one of the worst polluted estuaries in the world, receives pollutants from many point sources. Treated municipal wastewater (TMW) counts for 13% of its total freshwater input and more than 98% of the chemicals classified as priority pollutants been infused. Because of the complexity of the input, treatment facilities cannot remove toxicants efficiently. In addition, generation of new compounds by water treatment such as chlorination occurs. Batch-to-batch variability in the chemistry of this effluent was reflected in the early life stage toxicity bioassays using mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) and winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) embryos.

TMW has …
