Removal Of Nitric Oxide From Flue Gas With Ferrous Cysteine Solutions, Chun-Chiao Chou May 1990

Removal Of Nitric Oxide From Flue Gas With Ferrous Cysteine Solutions, Chun-Chiao Chou

Theses

The removal of NO from flue gas with aqueous ferrous cysteine solution as the reducing agent was discovered by S. G. Chang et al. (1988), at University of California, Berkeley. The purpose of this research is to extend the experimental works done by Chang et al., and to find methods to minimize the problems associated with the sensitivity of the medium to oxygen gas and emission of nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas. The main objective was to determine the feasibility of using ferrous cysteine in the treatment of NOx emissions from incinerators. In the present study, it was found that …

Mars And Beyond: The Solar System Beckons, Frank J. Redd

Faculty Honor Lectures

To space zealots, 1989 was the year the drought ended. The space shuttle was operational again; Voyager's grand reconnaissance of the Solar System climaxed with the glorious encounter with the planet Neptune and its startling moon, Triton; the launches of the Magellan spacecraft to Venus and the Gallileo to Jupiter broke a decade long hiatus in the launch of U.S. planetary missions; and, for the first time in over twenty years, a U.S. president announced a daring new initiative in human exploration with the goal of first returning humans to the Moon, then going on to Mars.

Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoretic Analysis Of Cellular Proteins From Escherichia Coli In The Presence Of Mutated And Homologous Genes For 4.5s Rna, Michael O'Loughlin May 1990

Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoretic Analysis Of Cellular Proteins From Escherichia Coli In The Presence Of Mutated And Homologous Genes For 4.5s Rna, Michael O'Loughlin

Senior Scholar Papers

4.5S RNA is a small. stable, required molecule in Escherichia coli whose precise function is not known. Previous evidence suggests an involvement with the ribosome during translation. In this study, four base insertion and four base deletion mutations were constructed in a plasmid borne copy of the 4.55 RN A gene. These copies and two homologous genes from Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Thermus thermophilus were transformed into an E. coli strain which then had its only wild-type 4.5S RNA gene inactivated. In order to assess the effect of the alternative gene copies. the patterns of proteins synthesized in the presence of …

A Direct Access Method Using A Neural Network Model, John William Meyer, George Winston Zobrist May 1990

A Direct Access Method Using A Neural Network Model, John William Meyer, George Winston Zobrist

Computer Science Technical Reports

One of the concerns in computer science involves optimizing usage of machines to make them more efficient and cost effective. One item of particular concern is the use of secondary storage devices, devices that store data other than in the main memory of the computer to which it is attached. The times for searching for data on these devices consistently proves to be a contributing factor in inefficient computer usage.

One data access method that avoids searching when possible is the hashing method. A function is defined to return the record number of a record based on its key field. …

Input Data Pattern Encoding For Neural Net Algorithms, Hyeoncheol Kim, George Winston Zobrist May 1990

Input Data Pattern Encoding For Neural Net Algorithms, Hyeoncheol Kim, George Winston Zobrist

Computer Science Technical Reports

First, a brief overview of neural networks and their applications are described, including the BAM (Bidirectional Associative Memory) model.

A bucket-weight-matrix scheme is proposed, which is a data pattern encoding method that is necessary to transform a set of real-world numbers into neural network state numbers without losing the pattern property the set has. The scheme is designed as a neural net so that it can be combined with other data processing neural nets. The net itself can be used as a bucket-sorting net also. This shows that traditional data structure problems can be an area that neural networks may …

Slippery Near-Surface Layer Of The Ocean Arising Due To Daytime Solar Heating, Vladimir N. Kudryavtsev, Alexander Soloviev May 1990

Slippery Near-Surface Layer Of The Ocean Arising Due To Daytime Solar Heating, Vladimir N. Kudryavtsev, Alexander Soloviev

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Measurements made in the Equatorial Atlantic during the 35th cruise of the R/V Akademic Vernadsky using a free-rising profiler and drifters revealed a near-surface slippery layer of the ocean arising due to daytime solar heating. The solar heating warms and stabilizes the surface layer of the ocean. This suppresses turbulent exchange and limits the penetration depth of the wind-induced turbulent mixing. The heated near-surface layer is then slipping over the underlying water practically without friction. At daytime warming of 1°C the resistance coefficient in the upper 5-m ocean, Cu = (U*/ΔUs)2 became …

Enhancement And Monitoring Of The Procambarus Clarkii Population In Lake Mead, Mikell Beth Hager May 1990

Enhancement And Monitoring Of The Procambarus Clarkii Population In Lake Mead, Mikell Beth Hager

Publications (WR)

Procambarus clarkii are found in extremely low numbers throughout Lake Mead, AZ-NV. The crayfish are an important dietary component for game fish. Enhancement of the crayfish population would broaden the fishery forage base. Crayfish were stocked and monitored in a study cove on Saddle Island to determine if the Procambarus clarkii population could be enhanced. A trapping survey of the area after the following reproductive season yielded low numbers of crayfish. A comparison of pre-stocking and post-stocking catch per trap day (CPTD) values revealed no significant increase in the population. Procambarus clarkii growth is limited by environmental factors in Lake …

The Effect Of Seasonal Cattle Grazing On California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use, Melanie J. Steinkamp May 1990

The Effect Of Seasonal Cattle Grazing On California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use, Melanie J. Steinkamp

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effect of seasonal cattle grazing on a newly reintroduced population of California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Idaho, was studied. The hypothesis that bighorn sheep avoid cattle was tested. The issue of avoidance between bighorn sheep and livestock is arguable. Some studies have found that bighorn sheep avoid cattle while others have found no response of bighorn sheep to cattle.

Evidence was found to document the avoidance of cattle by bighorn sheep. The size of the bighorn's home range and core area decreased with the movement of cattle into areas of high bighorn …

Irrigation Management Considering Soil Variability And Climatic Uncertainty, Dani Or May 1990

Irrigation Management Considering Soil Variability And Climatic Uncertainty, Dani Or

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The increase in multipurpose use of water resources, dwindling xii water supplies, and a decline in the economic viability of many agricultural operations make efficient irrigation management imperative. Soil variability and climatic uncertainty are major obstacles to efficient irrigation management due to a lack of reliable information for decision making. This study was aimed at identifying sources of uncertainty and examining methods for reducing the effects of uncertainty on irrigation scheduling schemes.

A method for spatial-temporal estimation that combines spatial information from few measurements with a physically based model of the system dynamics is proposed. The spatial phase of the …

The Effects Of Disease, Prey Fluctuation, And Clear-Cutting On American Marten In Newfoundland, Canada, Richard J. Fredrickson May 1990

The Effects Of Disease, Prey Fluctuation, And Clear-Cutting On American Marten In Newfoundland, Canada, Richard J. Fredrickson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Individual variation in survival and behavior of American marten (Martes americana) was studied in relation to disease, prey fluctuation, and clear-cutting from 10 January 1986 through 20 August 1987 in Newfoundland, Canada. Thirty-seven of forty marten captured on the study area were telemetered and monitored for part or all of the study.

Marten mortality was concentrated in two intervals, fall 1986 and late winter 1987. Mortality during fall 1986 was attributable to encephalitis, while marten deaths during late winter 1987 resulted from predation and starvation attributable to the prey decline. Nonsuppurative encephalitis was first detected 7 October 1986; …

A Prostaglandin Synthase Inhibition Assay With Detection By Elisa, Patricia Scott Apr 1990

A Prostaglandin Synthase Inhibition Assay With Detection By Elisa, Patricia Scott

Theses & Honors Papers

A simple, reliable method is described for the routine measurement of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as inhibitors of prostaglandin synthase. Appropriate concentrations of inhibitor are incubated with ram seminal vesical prostaglandin synthase, sodium arachidonate and reduced glutathione. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production is then quantitated by and enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA), in which anti-PGE2 antibody is utilized in a binding competition between test sample and adsorbed conjugate of PGE2-BSA. The antibody which remains bound to the solid phase is quantitatively determined colorimetrically by incubation with horse radish peroxidase labeled goat anti-rabbit IgG followed by …

Polar-Liquid, Derivatized Cyclodextrin Stationary Phases For The Capillary Gas Chromatography Separation Of Enantiomers, Daniel W. Armstrong, Weiyong Li, Chau Dung Chang, Josef Pitha

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new class of hydrophilic, relatively polar liquid, cyclodextrin (CD) derivatives have been used as highly selective chiral stationary phases (CSPs) for capillary gas chromatography (GC). Several possible requirements for liquidity In CD derivatives are discussed. O-(S)-2-Hydroxypropyl derivatives of α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrlns were synthesized, exclusively characterized, permethylated, and evaluated for enantloselectlvity. Seventy pairs of enantiomers were resolved. They represent a wide variety of structural types and classes of compounds including chlral alkyl amines, amino alcohols, epoxides, pyrans, furans, sugars, dlols, esters, ketones, bicyclic compounds, alcohols, and so on. Many of these compounds were not aromatic and cannot be resolved …

Thermodynamic Data From Drug-Dna Footprinting Experiments, James C. Dabrowiak, Jerry Goodisman, Koren Kissinger Apr 1990

Thermodynamic Data From Drug-Dna Footprinting Experiments, James C. Dabrowiak, Jerry Goodisman, Koren Kissinger

Chemistry - All Scholarship

Sequence-dependent thermodynamic quantities for the antiviral agent netropsin and a related bis(N-methylimidazole) dipeptide, lexitropsin, have been determined by DNase I footprinting techniques. The primary data are autoradiographic spot intensities derived from 10 footprinting experiments carried out in the temperature range 0-45 OC. After exclusion effects due to overlapped drug sites on DNA and redistribution phenomena associated with the enzyme were accounted for, sequence-dependent binding constants for the two ligands were calculated. Our approach does not require an independent determination of the free drug concentration, which is calculated, with individual site binding constants, by using only footprinting data. The temperature dependence …

Stromatolites Of The Lower Cambrian Deep Spring Formation; Mount Dunfee, Esmeralda County, Nevada, Lynn Oliver Apr 1990

Stromatolites Of The Lower Cambrian Deep Spring Formation; Mount Dunfee, Esmeralda County, Nevada, Lynn Oliver

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Middle Member of the Lower Cambrian Deep Spring Formation at Mount Dunfee, Nevada contains a diverse assemblage of stromatolites that formed on a tide- and storm-dominated, siliciclastic-influenced, carbonate shelf. The stromatolites formed in a shallow subtidal environment within and near active oolite shoals under strongly focused currents. The stromatolites occur in four different lithofacies: (1) bioherms of digitate stromatolites, (2) bioherms and biostromes of inclined stromatolites, (3) isolated forms of massive and hemispheroidal stromatolites, and (4) a biostrome of cryptomicrobial boundstones. The first three lithofacies are interpreted as microbial reefs. They had topographic relief, formed in active agitated waters, …

Chloroplast And Mitochondrial: Dna Polymerases From Cultured Soybean Cells, Sabine Heinhorst, Gordon C. Cannon, Arthur Weissbach Apr 1990

Chloroplast And Mitochondrial: Dna Polymerases From Cultured Soybean Cells, Sabine Heinhorst, Gordon C. Cannon, Arthur Weissbach

Faculty Publications

DNA polymerases were purified from chloroplasts and mitochondria of cultured Glycine max cells. The chloroplast enzyme exists in two forms which are indistinguishable from each other biochemically. All three organellar enzymes have an estimated molecular weight of 85,000 to 90,000 and prefer poly(rA)dT12-18 over activated DNA as a template in vitro. Maximum activity of the chloroplast and mitochondrial DNA polymerases requires KCI and a reducing agent, and the enzymes are completely resistant to inhibitors of DNA polymerase a. Taken together, these properties classify the soybean organellar enzymes as DNA polymerases y. A unique feature that distinguishes the plant enzymes from …
