Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study Of Antigen-Antibody Complexes, Including Sequence Specific Assignments And Structural Analysis Of Neurophysin As An Antigen Model, Elisar Jamil Barbar Jan 1993

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study Of Antigen-Antibody Complexes, Including Sequence Specific Assignments And Structural Analysis Of Neurophysin As An Antigen Model, Elisar Jamil Barbar

Dissertations and Theses

The interaction between molecules is essential in a wide range of biological processes. A detailed knowledge of these interactions is necessary for understanding these processes. Among the systems that involve important interactions is the immune system. NMR spectroscopy has a large number of spectral parameters that were used in this work to study antibody-antigen interactions. These same parameters were also used to begin a structural analysis of a medium-sized protein, neurophysin, that has important interactions with neurohormones, and served here as a model antigen. A set of ligands differing in size and charge was designed and used to probe the …

Age, Growth, And Reproduction Of Tautog Tautoga Onitis (Labridae: Perciformes) From Coastal Waters Of Virginia, E. Brian Hostetter, Thomas A. Munroe Jan 1993

Age, Growth, And Reproduction Of Tautog Tautoga Onitis (Labridae: Perciformes) From Coastal Waters Of Virginia, E. Brian Hostetter, Thomas A. Munroe

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Tautog Tautoga onitis are gaining popularity in Virginia's coastal waters as a recreational and food fish. Adult tautog are seasonally abundant on inshore hard-bottom habitats (1-10 m) and inhabit offshore areas (10-75 m) year-round. Juveniles, especially newly-settled recruits, inhabit vegetated areas in shallow water (usually < 1 m). From March 1979 to July 1986, tautog were collected in lower Chesapeake Bay and nearby coastal waters to examine age, growth, and sexual maturation. Age estimates were determined from annular marks on opercle bones: 82% of the fish were age-10 or younger, 18% exceeded age-10, and 1% were age-20 or older. Marginal increment analysis revealed that annuli formed concurrent with a protracted spawning season (April-July). The von Bertalanffy growth equation, derived from back-calculated mean lengths-at-age, was l(t) = 742 [1-e-0.085 (t-1.816)]. Tautog are long-lived (25+ yr) and attain relatively large sizes (672 mm TL) slowly (K for sexes combined = 0.085). Growth rates of both sexes are similar, although males grow slightly faster (K = 0.090 vs. 0.085 for females). Maturity occurs at age-3 in both sexes. Growth rates for tautog from Virginia are similar to those reported nearly 25 years ago for tautog in Rhode Island. Growth rates for tautog are similar to those of other reef fishes, such as snappers and groupers. Habitat restriction, slow growth, great longevity, and increasing popularity by user groups may contribute to over-exploitation of this species in Virginia waters.

Phytoplankton Relationships To Water Quality In Lake Drummond And Two Drainage Ditches, Christine G. Phillips, Harold G. Marshall Jan 1993

Phytoplankton Relationships To Water Quality In Lake Drummond And Two Drainage Ditches, Christine G. Phillips, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A twelve-month phytoplankton study was conducted in Lake Drummond and Washington and Jericho Ditches from December 1988 to November 1989. Four dominant phytoplankton groups were identified at these sites. These were the Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Cryptophyceae and an autotrophic picoplankton component. Over the past 20 years there has been a decrease in the mean pH levels of Lake Drummond and the replacement of one its former major components, the Chlorophyceae, by the Cyanophyceae. Based on water quality analysis results and species diversity indices, Lake Drummond is classified as in an early eutrophic stage of development.

Lake Level Changes Within The Yellagonga Regional Park: A Historic Perspective, Jennifer A. Hamann Jan 1993

Lake Level Changes Within The Yellagonga Regional Park: A Historic Perspective, Jennifer A. Hamann

Theses : Honours

The Yellagonga Regional Park is located approximately 20 km north of Perth and 6km east of the coast, in the City of Wanneroo. The park is comprised of Lake Joondalup, Beenyup Swamp, Wallubuenup Swamp and Lake Goollelal, a largely directly-linked wetland system and their surrounds. The importance of wetlands within the Perth Metropolitan area is widely documented with only 20% of the pre-European settlement wetlands remaining. (Godfrey, 1988; Davis, 1988) By comparison wetlands in the Yellagonga Regional Park are relatively natural in their state. (LeProvost, 1987) The park is of significance due to its conservation value, providing a varied array …

Larval Chironomids Of The St. Francis Sunken Lands In Northeast Arkansas, Betty G. Cochran, Edmond J. Bacon Jr., George L. Harp

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Sixty semi-annual collections (August 1987-July 1988) were made from 30 stations by sampling each station twice for 1.5 man-hours with an aquatic dipnet. Larval chironomids were mounted on slides and identified at 400-1000 magnifications using a Leitz Dialux 20 EB microscope. A survey of the aquatic macroinvertebrates of the St. Francis Sunken Lands in northeast Arkansas revealed 36 taxa of Order Diptera, Family Chironomidae. The taxa were used to evaluate the general health of the aquatic environment. Stations that were located within the least disturbed areas, which were old river channels and oxbows, contained the highest number of organisms and …

Pairwise And Many-Body Contributions To Interaction Potentials In He(N) Clusters, Carol A. Parish, Clifford E. Dykstra Jan 1993

Pairwise And Many-Body Contributions To Interaction Potentials In He(N) Clusters, Carol A. Parish, Clifford E. Dykstra

Chemistry Faculty Publications

High level ab initio calculations have been carried out to assess the pairwise additivity of potentials in the attractive or well regions of the potential surfaces of clusters of helium atoms. A large basis set was employed and calculations were done at the Brueckner orbital coupled cluster level. Differences between calculated potentials for several interacting atoms and the corresponding summed pair potentials reveal the three‐body and certain higher order contributions to the interaction strengths. Attraction between rare gas atoms develops from dispersion, and so helium clusters provide the most workable systems for analyzing nonadditivity of dispersion. The results indicate that …

A Comparative 2-Dimensional Gel Protein Database Of The Intact And Regenerating Newt Limbs, Panagiotis A. Tsonis Jan 1993

A Comparative 2-Dimensional Gel Protein Database Of The Intact And Regenerating Newt Limbs, Panagiotis A. Tsonis

Biology Faculty Publications

In this paper we describe a two-dimensional gel database of the regenerating newt limb. Protein synthesis was compared in the intact limb, in the 1-week regenerating limb, representing the dedifferentiation stage, and in the 2-week regenerating limb, representing the formation of the blastema. This comparative database provided data on differential expression of about 800 proteins during the process of limb regeneration. In addition, a map has been generated for these proteins for future guidance in characterizing further new, unknown proteins. The overall expression patterns of the proteins indicated that the dedifferentiation stage was marked by down-regulation of most proteins, while …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We report the ratio of double-to-single photoionization of He at several photon energies from 2 to 12 keV. By time-of-Aight methods, we find a ratio consistent with an asymptote at 1.5%±0.2%, essentially reached by h v≈4 keV. Fair agreement is obtained with older shake calculations of Byron and Joachain [Phys. Rev. 164, 1 (1967)], of Aberg [Phys. Rev. A 2, 1726 (1970)], and with recent many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) of Ishihara, Hino, and McGuire [Phys. Rev. A 44, 6980 (1991)]. The result lies below earlier MPBT calculations by Amusia et al. [J. Phys. B 8 …

Bulletin 4274 - Tree Planting On The High Rainfall Coastal Plain, Don Bennett, Richard George Jan 1993

Bulletin 4274 - Tree Planting On The High Rainfall Coastal Plain, Don Bennett, Richard George

Bulletins 4000 -

Careful planning can mean the difference between the success or failure of a tree planting program . Healthy , well-e stablished trees stand a better chance of survival, grow faster and are more resistant to insect attack. The need for time-consuming watering in summer is also eliminated.

The high rainfall coastal plain extends from Perth to Busselton and inland to the Darling Scarp. It receives about 800 to 1000 mm annual rainfall.

Site preparation is ideally started in summer. For a winter planting, decide before March where to plant, which varieties and how many trees to plant. Early planning allows …

Neural Network Diagnosis Of Malignant Melanoma From Color Images, Fikret ErçAl, C. Chawla, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss Jan 1993

Neural Network Diagnosis Of Malignant Melanoma From Color Images, Fikret ErçAl, C. Chawla, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss

Computer Science Technical Reports

Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of all skin cancers. Approximately 32,000 new cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed in 1991, with approximately 80 percent of patients expected to survive five years [1]. Fortunately, if detected early, even malignant melanoma may be treated successfully. Thus, in recent years, there has been a rising interest in the automated detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, particularly malignant melanoma [2]. In this paper, we present a novel neural network approach for the automated separation of melanoma from three other benign categories of tumors which exhibit melanoma-like characteristics. Our approach is based on devising …

The Dynamics Of Growth-Factor-Modified Immune-Response To Cancer Growth: One-Dimensional Models, J. A. Adam Jan 1993

The Dynamics Of Growth-Factor-Modified Immune-Response To Cancer Growth: One-Dimensional Models, J. A. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

By characterizing the effect of tumor growth factors as deviations from normal logistic-type growth rates, the spatio-temporal dynamics for a one-dimensional model of cancer growth incorporating immune response are studied. The growth rates considered are classified respectively as normal, activated, inhibited and delay activated. The homogeneous steady states are defined by relative extrema of a ''free energy'' function V(x) for each of the above four cases. This function is of particular importance in studying the coexistence of tumoral and cancer-free steady states, and in identifying the nature (progressive or regressive) of travelling wave solutions to the nonlinear partial differential equation …

Impacts, Tillites, And The Breakup Of Gondwanaland, Verne R. Oberbeck, John R. Marshall, Hans Aggarwal Jan 1993

Impacts, Tillites, And The Breakup Of Gondwanaland, Verne R. Oberbeck, John R. Marshall, Hans Aggarwal

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Mathematical analysis demonstrates that substantial impact crater deposits should have been produced during the last 2 Gy of Earth's history. Textures of impact deposits are shown to resemble textures of tillites and diamictites of Precambrian and younger ages. The calculated thickness distribution for impact crater deposits produced during 2 Gy is similar to that of tillites and diamictites ≤2 Ga. We suggest, therefore, that some tillites/diamictites could be of impact origin. Extensive tillite/diamictite deposits predated continental flood basalts on the interior of Gondwa- naland. Significantly, other investigators have already associated impact cratering with flood basalt volcanism and continental rifting. Thus, …

A Model Of Cell Damage In Space Flight, Robert Katz, F. A. Cucinotta, J. W. Wilson, J. L. Shinn, Duc M. Ngo Jan 1993

A Model Of Cell Damage In Space Flight, Robert Katz, F. A. Cucinotta, J. W. Wilson, J. L. Shinn, Duc M. Ngo

Robert Katz Publications

Cell damage by high LET radiations has been described by a phenomenological model (track theory) for 20 years and more. Molecules of biological significance (dry enzymes and viruses) act as 1 hit detectors. Recent additions to the class of I-hit detectors are E. Coli B, and the creation of both single and double strand breaks in SV-40 virus in EO buffer, where indirect effects predominate. The response of cells (survival, transformation, chromosome aberration) to these radiations is typically described by a 4-parameter model whose numerical values are determined by fitting the equations of the theory to experimental data at high …

Telomere Processing In Euplotes, Joris Robert Vermeesch, Dewight Williams, Carolyn M. Price Jan 1993

Telomere Processing In Euplotes, Joris Robert Vermeesch, Dewight Williams, Carolyn M. Price

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

In Euplotes crassus millions of telomeres are synthesized during the sexual phase of the life cycle. Since these newly synthesized telomeres are longer than normal macronuclear telomeres, they must be trimmed to the mature size. We have examined the timing and mechanism of this trimming step. We have shown that a sudden decrease in telomere length takes place at a specific time during macronuclear development. The decrease in telomere length is not caused by incomplete replication of the most terminal DNA sequences; rather it is the result of an active processing event that occurs independently of DNA replication. The developmentally …

Preparation Of Functionalized Polymers Utilizing A Soluble Highly Reactive Form Of Calcium, Reuben D. Rieke Jan 1993

Preparation Of Functionalized Polymers Utilizing A Soluble Highly Reactive Form Of Calcium, Reuben D. Rieke

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Calcium-substituted polymeric reagents are provided. These reagents can be prepared via the oxidative addition of a soluble highly reactive calcium species to organic and inorganic polymers containing alkyl, aryl, or alkylaryl pendent groups substituted with halide atoms, cyanide molecules, 1,3-dienes, or any conjugated poly unsaturated system. Preferably, the polymer is a cross linked p-bromopolystyrene, p-chloropolystyrene, p-fluoropolystyrene, or chloromethylated polystyrene. Preferably, the soluble highly reactive calcium species is prepared from the reduction of Ca(II) salts with an alkali metal arene, such as lithium biphenylide. These calcium-substituted polymeric reagents react with a variety of electrophiles to yield functionalized polymers. Reaction with Cu(I) …

Time-Stratigraphic Reconstruction And Integration Of Paleopedologic, Sedimentologic, And Biotic Events (Willwood Formation, Lower Eocene, Northwest Wyoming, U.S.A.), Thomas M. Bown, Mary J. Kraus Jan 1993

Time-Stratigraphic Reconstruction And Integration Of Paleopedologic, Sedimentologic, And Biotic Events (Willwood Formation, Lower Eocene, Northwest Wyoming, U.S.A.), Thomas M. Bown, Mary J. Kraus

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Relative paleosol maturities are inversely proportional to the accumulation rates of the sediment upon which they formed, and are therefore excellent relative indicators of how much geologic time elapsed between any two horizons. An empirically-based model is advanced using paleosol maturities to estimate the relative geologic time separating any stratigraphic levels within the lower Eocene Willwood Formation. The revised Willwood time stratigraphy from this analysis helps evaluate the nature, tempo, and possible causes of three major episodes of mammalian appearance and disappearance. These faunal events are directly correlated with certain aspects of paleosol evolution in the Willwood Formation. That evolution …

Seasonal Relationships Between Phytoplankton Composition, Abundance, And Primary Productivity In Three Tidal Rivers Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Harold G. Marshall, Kneeland K. Nesius Jan 1993

Seasonal Relationships Between Phytoplankton Composition, Abundance, And Primary Productivity In Three Tidal Rivers Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Harold G. Marshall, Kneeland K. Nesius

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The seasonal abundance and successional patterns of phytoplankton, including autotrophic picoplankton, are compared to spring, summer, and fall primary production maxima that occurred in three tidal rivers. The tidal freshwaters were dominated by diatoms, chlorophytes, and cyanobacteria during a late spring through early fall period of maximum growth. In contrast, downstream assemblages were dominated by estuarine diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cryptomonads which developed spring pulses and a protracted summer-fall maximum. Autotrophic picoplankton produced a major summer pulse at all river stations with reduced abundance during other seasons. The mean annual productivity rates for the tidal James, Rappahannock, and York rivers were …

Microzooplankton In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, And The Tidal Elizabeth, James, And York Rivers, Gyung-Soo Park, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Results of a one year study in the lower Chesapeake Bay and three tidal rivers indicate an abundant microzooplankton population, with a mean concentration of 4,231.1/Liter. The most abundant components are the non-loricate ciliates (2,518.2L, 59.5% of the annual total) and tintinnids (1,400.1/L 33.1%). In lesser abundance were the rotifers (191.4/L) and nauplii larvae (121.7/L). Seasonal abundance maxima were highest in summer, followed by fall, spring and winter.

Ecology Of The State Endangered Yellow Mud Turtle, Kinosternon Flavescens In Henry Co., Illinois, Michael W. Tuma

Masters Theses

Illinois populations of the state endangered yellow mud turtle (Kinosternon flavescens) persist in scattered locations on sand prairies. The largest population occurs on a remnant sand prairie of the former Green River Marsh in Henry Co. A study was conducted during 1992 to determine important criteria for preserve design. These criteria included extent of turtle movements within the site and habitat use. Turtles were captured by aquatic hoop traps, drift fence, and by hand from May 11 to August 31. A total of 16 adults, four juveniles, and eight hatchlings were captured. Population size was estimated at 44.80 adults using …
