Transport Of The Fluorescent Substrate Asp+ By Organic Cation Transporter-3 In Human Corneal Epithelial Cells, Jeremy Laws Jun 2024

Transport Of The Fluorescent Substrate Asp+ By Organic Cation Transporter-3 In Human Corneal Epithelial Cells, Jeremy Laws

Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Organic cation transporter-3 (OCT3) is expressed abundantly throughout the body, but little is known about the presence of these transporters within the eye and, more specifically, the cornea epithelium. An extensive library of compounds interacts with OCT3, including the fluorescent molecule ASP+ and metformin. Metformin is an OCT3 substrate and antidiabetic medication that can lower the risk of eye-related diseases like keratopathy and retinopathy linked to hyperglycemia. Utilizing high throughput microplate assays in a human cornea epithelial cell line (HCE-S), the time-dependent saturation of ASP+ uptake and the competition of ASP+ uptake by corticosterone (CORT), a …

The Impact Of Concussion History On Balance Performance In Collegiate Football Players, Cade R. Montgomery, Evan Braesch Jun 2024

The Impact Of Concussion History On Balance Performance In Collegiate Football Players, Cade R. Montgomery, Evan Braesch

Applied Health Sciences Student Works

This study aims to investigate the enduring impact of prior sport-related concussions on static and dynamic balance performance among collegiate football players. Twenty-six players (n=26), half with a history of diagnosed concussions (n=13). underwent balance testing using the Biosway Balance Error Scoring Scale test (BESS) for static balance, and the Y-Balance test (YBT) for dynamic balance. The Biosway test revealed notable statistical discrepancies in BESS composite scores between groups (p=0.010) and individual test items such as single leg stance with eyes closed (p=0.034) and tandem stance with eyes closed (p=0.030). No significant difference in the YBT composite scores between groups, …

Engineering An Injectable Hydrogel With Self-Assembling 3d Vasculature, Kendyl Cohn Jun 2024

Engineering An Injectable Hydrogel With Self-Assembling 3d Vasculature, Kendyl Cohn

Master's Theses

This research developed methods for culturing self-assembling capillaries in an injectable gel as a potential method for vascularizing tissue-on-a-chip models to mimic physiological drug delivery. Additionally, a mathematical model was developed as a tool for understanding nutrient delivery and comparison of potential delivery systems. Organs-on-a-chip provide novel platforms for studying biology and physiology in 3D, allow exploration of tissue engineering on a manageable scale, and serve as models for drug screening and drug-delivery testing.

Methods were first developed for co-culture of endothelial cells and fibroblasts (3T3s or HDFs) in 2D, evaluating culture time, seeding density and ratio of HUVECs and …

Half Dawn, Catherine Ashley Jun 2024

Half Dawn, Catherine Ashley

Masters Theses

By presenting these words on paper, I have given entry into a microcosm of recent research, questions, and creative explorations. There is potential for disconnection when trying to turn your head inside out and present it in a way that feels beautiful for other people. I’m trusting the moments of authenticity I’ve found in my wandering. Segue. Relationship. Gesture. Illusion. My musings all stem from notions of temporality. Time dances on the farthest ends of both immensity and desolation. I’ve spent stretches of time asking the people, texts, and experiments around me to define time in a way that I …

Postural Control In Adults With Age-Related Hearing Loss, Elizabeth Tobener Jun 2024

Postural Control In Adults With Age-Related Hearing Loss, Elizabeth Tobener

Alternative Theses and Dissertations (AETDs)

The present study investigated postural control measures in adults with age-related hearing loss (ARHL). Individuals between the age of 50 and 70 were recruited (10 with normal hearing, 32 with ARHL) and evaluated using pure-tone audiometry, vestibular function assessments, and postural control measures. Results of this study revealed significant correlations between ARHL and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMPs) and ocular VEMPs. As ARHL increased, amplitude of cervical VEMPs and ocular VEMPs decreased. There were no significant correlations for ARHL and video head impulse test (vHIT) gain. Single leg stance with head tilt was significantly associated with ARHL. As ARHL …

Evaluation Of Sphingolipid Biosynthetic Inhibitor L-Cycloserine To Prevent Retinal Degeneration, Faiza Tahia Jun 2024

Evaluation Of Sphingolipid Biosynthetic Inhibitor L-Cycloserine To Prevent Retinal Degeneration, Faiza Tahia

Alternative Theses and Dissertations (AETDs)

Retinal degenerative diseases, affecting millions worldwide, are caused by irreversible photoreceptor cell death. These conditions lead to irreversible vision loss or blindness, presenting significant economic challenges. Retinal degenerative diseases result from a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors, such as light exposure and oxidative stress. Effective treatments are currently limited, which underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions. Ceramide, a bioactive sphingolipid, has emerged as a pivotal mediator in the apoptotic cascade associated with retinal degeneration, presenting a promising target for therapeutic intervention. This research explores the therapeutic potential of L-Cycloserine, a small molecule inhibitor of de novo ceramide …

The Role Of Skeletal Muscle Ampk/Mtorc1 Signaling In Disrupted Metabolism During Chemotherapy Treatment And Recovery, Jessica L. Halle Jun 2024

The Role Of Skeletal Muscle Ampk/Mtorc1 Signaling In Disrupted Metabolism During Chemotherapy Treatment And Recovery, Jessica L. Halle

Alternative Theses and Dissertations (AETDs)

Colorectal cancer patient survival rate has increased over the past decade due to improved screening and treatment options. The clinically relevant FOLFOX (5-fluorouracil [5-FU], oxaliplatin, leucovorin) chemotherapy regimen is a mainstay treatment option, despite the development of severe side-effects that can occur acutely or develop as a late effect after treatment cessation. Cancer and chemotherapy can promote systemic metabolic dysfunction; consequently, patients will likely experience debilitating weakness and fatigue, and these symptoms are often accompanied by excessive fat and muscle loss. Although studies have established chemotherapy effects on the tumor, few have investigated mechanisms underlying the metabolic complications associated with …

In-Vitro Hydrogel Blood Clots, Ethan Evans, Khoi-Austin Ngo

Bioengineering Senior Theses

Creating a sustainable, ethical, and affordable substitute for animal blood in balloon catheter testing for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is important to take into consideration. This research utilizes agarose and dextran to develop hydrogel-based artificial blood clots. These hydro gels replicate the mechanical characteristics of human thrombi across acute, subacute, and chronic stages through their elastic and viscous moduli (G' and G") and phase angles. This project addresses extant testing protocols, including temperature regulation, agarose processing, and well plate size, and suggests efficient approaches to encounter these problems.

The hydrogels were characterized by means of a thorough literature review and …

Subsidiarity And The Best Interests Of The Child, Lindsay Saligman Jun 2024

Subsidiarity And The Best Interests Of The Child, Lindsay Saligman

Chicago Journal of International Law

In the context of adoption, subsidiarity is the principle that children should remain with their birth families whenever possible, and whenever not possible, that in-country placements should take precedence over intercountry adoption. This Comment looks at the specific meaning of subsidiarity in the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. It highlights that the convention does not require intercountry adoption be a last resort, but rather that “due consideration” be given to placements “within the State of origin.” Then, the Comment looks at the domestic law of India, Colombia, and South Korea, three of …
