It is based on the official records of the Academy (committee reports, Board minutes, correspondence) as well as the recollections, impressions and thoughts of the author.
Honey Production In Western Australia, Rob Manning
Honey Production In Western Australia, Rob Manning
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
the first ever survey of the potential production and value of apiary products from the south-west of Western Australia has shown beekeepers are collecting only 10 per cent of the potential honey crop.
The biggeest losses in honey production are caused by the enviroment, such as protracted drought, and extreme temperatures, heavy rain and cyclones during flowering. Fire, apiary sites leased but not used, and logging of forests also reduce the availability of apiary sites for honey production.

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: V. S-Triazine Resistant Setaria Faberi Herrm, R. Thornhill, J. Dekker
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
S-triazine resistance in giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.) has been reported previously, but not in the midwestern U.S. corn belt or Iowa. A study was conducted using a chlorophyll fluorescence assay to confirm the presence of resistance in one S. faberi population in Iowa. Variable chlorophyll fluorescence assays confirmed that a population of this species with this type of resistance exists in Iowa. This is the first report of s-triazine resistance in S. faberi, and the fourth species with this type of herbicide resistance, found in an Iowa agroecosystem.

Preparation Of Functionalized Polymers Utilizng A Soluble Highly Reactive Form Of Calcium, Reuben D. Rieke
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Calcium-substituted polymeric reagents are provided. These reagents can be prepared via the oxidative addition of a soluble highly reactive calcium species to organic and inorganic polymers containing alkyl, aryl, or alkylaryl pendent groups substituted with halide atoms, cyanide molecules, 1,3-dienes, or any conjugated poly unsaturated system. Preferably, the polymer is a cross linked p-bromopolystyrene, p-chloropolystyrene, p fluoropolystyrene, or chloromethylated polystyrene. Preferably, the soluble highly reactive calcium species is prepared from the reduction of Ca(II) salts with an alkali metal arene, such as lithium biphenylide. These calcium-substituted polymeric reagents react with a variety of electrophiles to yield functionalized polymers. Reaction with …

An Empirical Model Of Gastric Evacuation Rates For Fish And An Analysis Of Digestion In Piscivorous Brown Trout, E. He, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
The gastric evacuation rates of brown trout Salmo trutta (0.9–1.6 kg) feeding on fingerling rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (3.5–7.6 g) were measured in the laboratory at five temperatures (4.5, 9.0, 14.0, 19.0, and 22.5°C). Instantaneous gut evacuation rates (Re) increased exponentially with temperature (T): Re = 0.053se^0.073T, r^2 = 0.98; they varyied from 7%sh^–1 at 4.5°C to 29%sh^–1 at 22.5°C. Linear regressions described the relationship between time and qualitative measures of fish digestion, thus allowing investigators to determine how long an ingested fish would be identifiable at different temperatures. An analysis of published evacuation rates (N = 121) of 22 …

Quality Of Private Ground-Water Supplies In Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey, James S. Dinger, O. Barton Davidson, Richard E. Sergeant, Joseph L. Taraba, Thomas W. Ilvento, Steve Coleman, Rayetta Boone, Laura M. Knoth
Information Circular--KGS
About 3.7 million people live in Kentucky, of which 1.9 million (52 percent) live in urban areas (roughly defined as any community with 2,500 or more people) and 1.8 million (48 percent) live in rural areas (University of Kentucky, 1993). Figure 1 summarizes sources of drinking water for Kentucky residents. About 70 percent of Kentuckians get their daily supply of water from surface-water sources - lakes and streams; about 25 percent get their water from ground-water wells; and about 5 percent get their water from other sources - springs, cisterns, ponds, or hauled water.
A Preliminary Study Using The Willow Cutting Method To Reduce Lake Shoreline Erosion, Jeffrey L. Bushur
A Preliminary Study Using The Willow Cutting Method To Reduce Lake Shoreline Erosion, Jeffrey L. Bushur
Masters Theses
The Charleston Side-Channel Reservoir has been experiencing extensive shoreline erosion since its completion in 1982. A diagnostic/feasibility study of the reservoir in 1992 rated shoreline erosion as the second largest source of sedimentation. Sedimentation reduces the reservoir volume, increases nutrient loading, and increases water turbidity.
As a part of Clean Lakes Program Phase II, the use of willow cuttings for bank stabilization was proposed as a possible treatment for shoreline erosion. While the use of willows for streambank stabilization has been extensively reported, lake documentation is rare. This experiment determined the feasibility of such action for the Charleston Side-Channel Reservoir …
Inhibition Of Total Gas And Methane Production In Anaerobic Digestion By Various Toxicants, Steven H. Malehorn
Inhibition Of Total Gas And Methane Production In Anaerobic Digestion By Various Toxicants, Steven H. Malehorn
Masters Theses
Heavy metal inhibition of anaerobic digestion of municipal sewage sludge has been investigated over the past 50 years. Many assays began with steady-state conditions and observed the rate at which total gas or methane production decreased due to toxicant inhibition. These methods required considerable time and labor. Modified Warburg respirometers and serum bottle assays reduced much of the effort, but each method has limitations in terms of complexity, cost, and accuracy.
This series of experiments had two objectives: 1) develop a quick, inexpensive, and easy method to measure methanogenic activity in anaerobic digesters, and 2) determine median inhibitory concentrations (IC …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Transition Metal Polypyridyl Complexes With A Novel 1,10-Phenanthropteridinedione Ligand, Huakai Huang
Masters Theses
A new alloxazine ligand (1; "Pptd"), produced by the condensation of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione with 5,6-diamino-1,3-dimethyluracil, and several transition metal complexes containing this ligand, have been synthesized. The Pptd ligands attach to Ru(II), Co(II), or Re(I) metal centers through the phenanthroline linkage to form stable polypyridyl complexes. The spectral and the electrochemical characterization of Pptd complexes of Ru(II), Co(II), and Re(I) is presented.
Pptd is capable of being reduced (across the pyrazine nitrogens) by two H-atoms. When coordinated to Ru(II), Pptd forms stable complexes which retain the robust characteristics and electrochemical activity of other Ru(II) polypyridyl species. In addition, Ru(II) complexes of …
A-Helical Polypeptide Monolayers, Erwin P. Enriquez
A-Helical Polypeptide Monolayers, Erwin P. Enriquez
Chemistry Faculty Publications
In efforts to utilize the a-helical structural motif as a basic building block in the formation of supramolecular assemblies, a study of the self-assembly of a-helical poly(glutamate)s from dilute solution onto a solid support was initiated. In particular, poly(y-benzyl-L-glutamate) [PBLG], which has an unusually robust a-helical conformation, was functionalized at the amino terminus with a disulfide-containing moiety (lipoic acid), which in turn has a specific and strong chemisorptive interaction with gold surfaces. The same end group functionalization was used with the /i-alkyl side chain analogs of PBLG. The resulting self-assembled monolayers were characterized by grazing angle reflection infrared (GIR-IR) spectroscopy, …

A Review Of The Biology Of Giant Salvinia, J. Douglas Oliver
A Review Of The Biology Of Giant Salvinia, J. Douglas Oliver
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Giant salvinia (Salviniaceae) is a potentially serious aquatic weed that is native to Brazil. It has been reported in more than 20 countries, but is not established in the U.S. at this time. Mitchell and Tur (1975) reported that three years after the formation of the Kariba Reservoir in Africa, giant salvinia blanketed 21.5% or 1003 km2 of the reservoir surface area. Creagh (199111992) wrote, "A single small plant may grow to form a thick mat covering more than 100 sq. km. in just three months - choking lakes and waterways, reducing populations of aquatic plants and animals and in …

Advances In Biomolecule Analysis: Ftms Of Macromolecules, Curtiss D. Hanson, Ira M. Simet, Suzanne R. Smith
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The development of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) as an analytical technique has opened new avenues to the analysis of high molecular weight biomolecules. Because mass analysis is based on a detection of a frequency, it is possible to obtain high resolution mass measurements without sacrificing sensitivity. The unique ability to analyze high mass ions is based in the design of a passive ExB ion trap. Although in the past, field inhomogeneities have limited this technique, recent developments in both trap designs and excitation techniques have resulted in major improvements in both sensitivity and resolution.

The parameter of recent injury was used to provide preliminary information on buoy effectiveness.
Results were as follows: approximately 6% of the study area was covered by stony corals, with an average of 3 colonies per square meter. Diversity based on abundance (H'n) was 1 .7, and diversity based on relative coverage …
Identifying Key Variables Associated With The Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Prolific Marine Petroleum Source Rock (Mpsr) Units And Its Application To The Taconic Foreland Basin, Eastern New York, C. Mark Achong
Geology Theses and Dissertations
Correctly identifying key variables associated with the temporal and spatial distribution of prolific marine petroleum source rock (MPSR) units is of critical importance towards the future development of models accurately predicting their existence and effective exploitation. The geographic positioning and prevailing paleoclimatic conditions on paleocontinental reconstructions, in combination with the processes controlling the drowning of continental margins and parameters associated with the establishment of high biologic productivity and long term anoxic conditions within the water column, have been pursued as first-order constraints controlling the development of some prolific marine petroleum source rock (MPSR) deposits. From this, a model has been …

Optimal Greedy Algorithms For Indifference Graphs, Peter J. Looges, Stephan Olariu
Optimal Greedy Algorithms For Indifference Graphs, Peter J. Looges, Stephan Olariu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
A fundamental problem in social sciences and management is understanding and predicting decisions made by individuals, various groups, or the society as a whole. In this context, one important concept is the notion of indifference. We characterize the class of indifference graphs, that is, graphs which arise in the process of quantifying indifference relations. In particular, we show that these graphs are characterized by the existence of a special ordering of their vertices. As it turns out, this ordering leads naturally to optimal greedy algorithms for a number of computational problems, including coloring, finding a shortest path between two vertices, …
Global Snow Cover Monitoring: An Update, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey, Richard R. Heim Jr.
Global Snow Cover Monitoring: An Update, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey, Richard R. Heim Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Accurate monitoring of the large-scale dimensions of global snow cover is essential for understanding details of climate dynamics and climate change. Presently, such information is gathered individually from ground station networks and satellite platforms. Efforts are in progress to consolidate and analyze long-term station records from a number of countries. To gain truly global coverage, however, satellite-based monitoring techniques must be employed. A 27-year record of Northern Hemisphere continental snow cover produced by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is the longest such environmental record available. Records of Southern Hemisphere continental cover and snow on top of …

Integrating Multiple Programming Paradigms On Connection Machine Cm5 In A Dataflow-Based Software Environment, Gang Cheng, Geoffrey C. Fox, Kim Mills
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
By viewing different parallel programming paradigms as essential heterogeneous approaches in mapping "real-world" problems to parallel systems, we discuss methodologies in integrating multiple programming models on a Connection Machine CM5. In a data flow based integration model built in a visualization software AVS, we demonstrate a simple, effective and modular way to couple sequential, data-parallel and explicit message-passing modules into an integrated programming environment on the CM5.
