Reconnaissance Of The Bedrock Aquifers And Groundwater Chemistry Of Crawford, Franklin, And Sebastian Counties, Arkansas, Samuel R. Rothermel, Wyndal M. Robison, Julie L. Wanslow, James R. Musgrove, Daryll Saulsberry, Albert E. Ogden

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A ground water reconnaissance of Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian counties was performed utilizing 122 wells having drillers' logs from bedrock aquifers. North of the Arkansas River, essentially all bedrock wells produce from the Atoka Formation. There are many low producing aquifers within the Atoka with a range in yield of 0.1 to 55 gpm, but having a median yield of only 2 gpm. Well depths range from 18 to 248 feet with a median of 122 feet. More water is generally obtained from the shale/siltstone aquifers than the sandstones due to more bedding-plane partings and more closely spaced fractures. Greater …

Rainbow Trout Production And Water Quality In Eastern South Dakota Dugouts, William Lee Vodehnal Jan 1982

Rainbow Trout Production And Water Quality In Eastern South Dakota Dugouts, William Lee Vodehnal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nine-hundred-fifty-four rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were stocked into 18 eastern South Dakota dugouts in April 1980 to determine the feasibility of dugouts for raising annual fish crops. Trout growth was compared between dugouts by stocking rate (1977/ha, 1483/ha, 988/ha, and 494/ha) and feeding combination [fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and supplemental feed, supplmental feed, and trout alone]. Chemical physical properties were also monitored in an old and new unstocked dugouts from July 1980 to July 1981. Growth was greater for 988/ha rainbow trout than the other stocking densities during the April 1980 to July 1980 sampling period. Mean total length increased …

Growth, Food Habits, And The Relative Effectiveness Of Stocking Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) In South-Central South Dakota, Kenneth C. Clodfelter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effectiveness of stocking rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) in 47 selected stock ponds in south-central South Dakota was analyzed in 1977 and 1978. Rainbow trout were captured in 31 (66.0%) ponds during the study. Twenty-five of the 31 ponds (80.6%) appeared to have excellent rainbow trout populations. Rainbow trout stocked in ponds with a resident largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) population had poor survival. The growth rates and condition factors for 93 and 463 rainbow trout in 1977 and 1978, respectively, were excellent. The average total length for age-groups I and II rainbow trout in 1977 was 195 and 224 mm, …

Organic N-Chloramines: Chemistry And Toxicology, Frank E. Scully, Jr., Maxwell A. Bempong Jan 1982

Organic N-Chloramines: Chemistry And Toxicology, Frank E. Scully, Jr., Maxwell A. Bempong

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The stability of aqueous solutions of organic N-chloramines, suspected of contaminating chlorinated water, has been studied. Two factors influence the decomposition of solutions of N-chloropiperidine and N-chlorodiethylamine: a spontaneous decomposition and photodecomposition. Since solutions of these compounds are relatively long-lived, a need for an analytical method for their identification is discussed. A new method is described which involves reaction of organic N-chloramines with arenesulfinic acid salts. The method gives high yields of stable arenesulfonamides. Several toxicological studies of N-chloropiperidine are described. The compound is mutagenic by Ames assay in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA 100 and does not require metabolic activation …

Benthic Resting Cysts Of Gonyaulax Monilata Howell And Their Relationship To Red Tides In The Indian River, Florida, Kevin C. Owen, Dean R. Norris

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Gonyaulax monilata cysts were found in the sediments from 13 of 37 stations sampled in the Indian River, Florida. The distribution of cysts appears to be the result of 2 unrelated phenomena. In areas where blooms have occurred in the past, the lack of circulation in the lagoon allows the cysts to accumulate. South of Turkey Creek, cysts are found associated with shellfish beds where no blooms have been reported. It is suggested these cysts have been introduced into shellfish regions with oysters which are annually rafted from areas where G. monilata blooms occur. Blooms of this toxic dinoflagellate can …

Protein Synthesis In Rabbit Reticulocytes: Characteristics Of The Protein Factor Rf That Reverses Inhibition Of Protein Synthesis In Heme-Deficient Reticulocyte Lysates, Michael Grace, Robert O. Ralston, Ambica C. Banerjee, Naba K. Gupta Jan 1982

Protein Synthesis In Rabbit Reticulocytes: Characteristics Of The Protein Factor Rf That Reverses Inhibition Of Protein Synthesis In Heme-Deficient Reticulocyte Lysates, Michael Grace, Robert O. Ralston, Ambica C. Banerjee, Naba K. Gupta

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

During heme deficiency in reticulocyte lysates, the heme-regulated translational inhibitor of protein synthesis (HRI) is activated and shuts off protein synthesis. In partial reactions, HRI phosphorylates the Mr 38,000 subunit (α subunit) of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF-2), which forms a ternary complex, Met-tRNAf•eIF-2•GTP. The eIF-2α(P) thus formed is not recognized by two eIF-2 ancillary factors, Co-eIF-2B (which promotes the dissociation of the ternary complex at high Mg2+) and Co-eIF-2C (which reverses the inhibition of ternary complex formation), and thus, is presumably inactive in peptide chain initiation. A protein factor, designated RF, which reverses inhibition …

The Fayum Primate Forest Revisited, Thomas M. Bown, Mary Kraus, Scott Wing, John Fleagle, Bruce H. Tiffney, Elwyn Simons, Carl F. Vondra Jan 1982

The Fayum Primate Forest Revisited, Thomas M. Bown, Mary Kraus, Scott Wing, John Fleagle, Bruce H. Tiffney, Elwyn Simons, Carl F. Vondra

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In Oligocene times, the Fayum area of northern Egypt was a subtropical to tropical lowland coastal plain with damp soils and seasonal rainfall that supported an abundance and variety of vegetation, including lianes (large vines), tall trees, and possibly mangroves, and a large and varied vertebrate fauna. The Oligocene marine strandline was close by and principal Jebel Qatrani Formation streams were probably brackish several kilometers inland due to tidal incursions. Sediments of the Jebel Qatrani Formation were deposited by several large meandering streams, associated with minor but sometimes extensive flood basin ponds. These rocks provide no evidence for the former …

Evaluation Of A Power Plant Reservoir As A Holding Area For Paddlefish Brood Stock, Terry L. Margenau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Twenty paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) released into the Big Stone Power Plant boiler make-up reservoir were monitored to determine growth, condition, and food habits. In addition, fish and zooplankton populations were sampled and chemical and physical parameters measured to determine the potential of the reservoir as a holding area for paddlefish brood stock. Paddlefish captured during the first year after their release into the boiler make-up reservoir averaged 2.2 kg body weight increases and 59 mm eye-fork length increases. Condition factors of captured paddlefish also increased during this period from 1.26 to 1.49. Paddlefish food in the reservoir consisted almost entirely …

A Methodology For Siting Coal Fired Thermoelectric Generating Facilities In Puerto Rico, David J. Mcmahon Ii Jan 1982

A Methodology For Siting Coal Fired Thermoelectric Generating Facilities In Puerto Rico, David J. Mcmahon Ii

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In the past, energy facilities on the Island of Puerto Rico have not been located in the best practicable sites. This is attributable to the absence of mandatory site selection procedures. This thesis has developed and tested procedures for siting 900 MWe coal fired thermoelectric generation plants. The procedures developed here permit the placement of these facilities within the existing legal regime, with a minimum of adverse ecological and socioeconomic impact. The process has been designed to consider the entire Island of Puerto Rico for the suitability of siting a 900 MWe coal fired facility. This is accomplished through the …

Influence Of The Termite Macrotermes Michaelseni (Sjöst) On Soil Fertility And Vegetation In A Semi-Arid Savannah Ecosystem, M. A. Arshad Jan 1982

Influence Of The Termite Macrotermes Michaelseni (Sjöst) On Soil Fertility And Vegetation In A Semi-Arid Savannah Ecosystem, M. A. Arshad

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The growth and species structure of vegetation in relation to the proximity of termite (M. michaelseni) mounds was studied in a semi-arid savannah ecosystem during 1978-1980. The dry matter yield in the termite-modified area at 1-10 m distance from mounds was significantly greater (P < 0.01) than that in the area beyond 22 m which is relatively unaffected by the termites. Themeda triandra and Digitaria scalarum, dominant grass species of the area, were totally absent in the 1-10 m zone around the mound. The major species in the immediate vicinity of the mound were Pennisetum stramineum and Cynodon dactylon, the latter was a dominant species (over 90%) within the 0-10 m zone and entirely absent beyond 15 m from the mound. The number of grass species increased from 2-3 species around the mound to 6-7 species in the area apparently beyond the influence of the mound. High concentration of nutrients and favourable water availability, together with good drainage, appeared to be the major causes of increased biomass and different species composition of vegetation around the mound. © 1982.

Interfacial Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C And Myoglobin, Edmond F. Bowden Jan 1982

Interfacial Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C And Myoglobin, Edmond F. Bowden

Theses and Dissertations

The interfacial electrochemistry of horse heart cytochrome c was studied at metal and metal oxide electrodes. Sperm whale myoglobin reactions at metal oxide and surface modified electrodes were also investigated. Emphasis was on the measurement and mechanistic interpretation of the heterogeneous electron transfer kinetic parameters for these electrode reactions.

The motivation for this study stems from the fact that some electron transfer proteins, e.g., cytochrome c, transfer electrons heterogeneously in physiological systems. Specific electrodes may, therefore, serve as suitable models for physiological surfaces. Electrode and membrane interfaces are both electrically charged and both have oriented hydration water layers.

The cyclic …

The Influence Of Salinity On Larval Development And Population Dynamics Of Anopheles Merus Dönitz (Diptera: Culicidae), F. W. Mosha, C. M. Mutero Jan 1982

The Influence Of Salinity On Larval Development And Population Dynamics Of Anopheles Merus Dönitz (Diptera: Culicidae), F. W. Mosha, C. M. Mutero

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Variations in density of adults of Anopheles merus Dön. in Jimbo Village on the Kenya Coast were found to be correlated both with rainfall and with salinity at their breeding sites. Densities started to increase at the beginning of the rains when several breeding sites were formed. This was followed by a decline in numbers resulting mainly from the decrease in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites. A second rise occurred after the end of the rains, corresponding with an increase in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites due to evaporation. Peak density coincided with salinities of 30–50% sea water …

Extensions, Generalizations, Characterizations And Testing For Independence Through Infinite Divisibility, Edward Joul Danial Jan 1982

Extensions, Generalizations, Characterizations And Testing For Independence Through Infinite Divisibility, Edward Joul Danial

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates various related topics around the exciting concept: "Infinite Divisibility." First, two intricate distributions, namely, the univariate generalized Waring and the hyper-Poisson are proved to be infinitely and noninfinitely divisible, respectively. Analysis and computer approaches are employed. This itself extends the use of some results introduced by Katti, Steutel and Warde. Secondly, generalizations to Warde, Katti and Steutel's sufficient conditions and related results are achieved. Then, numerical application is presented. Thirdly, characterizations through infinite and finite divisibility are obtained. The Poisson, negative binomial, geometric, Bernoulli and uniform c haracterizations in terms of infinite divisibility are deduced. Some of …

Reports

The effectiveness of a sloped rock-grass filtration system in treating municipal wastewater was tested on a 24 m by 36 m (80 ft by 120 ft) slope on a 2.5 percent grade sown with a mixture of rye grass, fescue grass, and bluegrass. The field was divided into six plots, each approximately 3.5 m wide and 36 m long. Three of the plots (slope-rock) were constructed with 9 m of gravel, 7.6 cm deep, on the upper reaches of the slope. Raw (screened, degritted) municipal wastewater from Hyrum, Utah, was applied to the slope-rock sections at application rates of 13 …

Catalytic Oxidation Of Sulfur Dioxide In Wastewater, Ernest J. Upton, V. Dean Adams Jan 1982

Catalytic Oxidation Of Sulfur Dioxide In Wastewater, Ernest J. Upton, V. Dean Adams

Reports

Sulfur dioxide has been shown to be an effective wastewater disinfectant. The aqueous sulfur dioxide creates and oxygen demand in the effulent which must be removed prior to discharge. Oxidation to sulfate is one means of accomplishing this task. Experiments were carried out to determine the effectiveness of transition metals and activated carbon as catalysts for the oxidation of S+IV species in wastewater. Both the metals and carbon are known catalysis, but what inhibitory effect the wastewater might have was unknown. Effectiveness was defined as a combination of catalyst life, effluent quality, and cost. Tradition metals were eliminated as potential …

Impacts Of Western Coal, Oil Shale, And Tar Sands Development On Aquatic Environmental Quality: A Technical Information Matrix; Volume 1 Introduction And Instructions, Jay J. Messer, Charles I. Liff, Kurt Gernerd, Frederick J. Post Jan 1982

Impacts Of Western Coal, Oil Shale, And Tar Sands Development On Aquatic Environmental Quality: A Technical Information Matrix; Volume 1 Introduction And Instructions, Jay J. Messer, Charles I. Liff, Kurt Gernerd, Frederick J. Post

Reports

Introduction: The Upper Colorado River Basin contains vast deposits of coal, oil shale, and tar sands, which could undergo extensive development should oil prices rise or an international situation restrict oil imports. Naturally, the prospect of development of these alternative fossil fuels resources has led to concern over how extraction and conversion activities will impact environmental quality. A thorough understanding of the nature and magnitude of the resulting envionemental impacts is a necessary prerequisite, if the costs and risks of such activites are to be weighed against the economic benefits. When we set out to evaluated these costs and risks, …

A Multivariate Water Quality Index For Use In Management Of A Wildland Watershed, Ramzi Mahmood, Jay J. Messer, Frank J. Nemanich, Charles I. Liff, Dennis B. George Jan 1982

A Multivariate Water Quality Index For Use In Management Of A Wildland Watershed, Ramzi Mahmood, Jay J. Messer, Frank J. Nemanich, Charles I. Liff, Dennis B. George

Reports

Executive Summary: Summary: Multivariate statistical techniques were used to define a method for establishing a water quality index (WQI) for use in protecting the stream environment in a high mountain watershed. The purpose of the WQI was to aggregate water quality parameters in such a way that the effects of low level increments in mining, grazing, logging and other activities could be related to a change in the value of a single entity, aquatic environmental aquality, in a linear programming (LP) management model. Several data aggregation methods were explored, using water quality data collected over 5 years (1975-1979) by the …

Optimum Yield And The Fcma: Uneven Distribution Of Management Burden, Herrick J. Johnson Dec 1981

Optimum Yield And The Fcma: Uneven Distribution Of Management Burden, Herrick J. Johnson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Until the establishment of the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976 (FCMA), fish outside the United States' twelve mile fishery zone were, according to international law, common property and belonged to the nation or individual that caught them. This common property law was based on the concept that fish resources were so large that no amount of fishing would interfere with the right of others to catch fish. Modern technology, however, has created equipment that enabled foreign and domestic fishermen to over-fish the resource. A reduced domestic catch led coastal fishermen to support a bill that unilaterally extended the …
