Changes In Bait Acceptance By Rabbits In Australia And New Zealand, A.J. Oliver, S.H. Wheeler, C.D. Gooding, J. Bell
Changes In Bait Acceptance By Rabbits In Australia And New Zealand, A.J. Oliver, S.H. Wheeler, C.D. Gooding, J. Bell
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
Control of rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus, by poisoned bait has been widely practiced in Australia and New Zealand for many years. Since the 1950s, Compound 1080 has been the active ingredient and yielded good results (ca 90% kills) when first used. Recent trails (1973-74) in New Zealand showed that the main reason for poor results obtained nowadays is the failure of many rabbits to eat bait. Recent trials in Western Australia showed that there has been a significant decline in effectiveness of rabbit control by baiting during the period 1958-1975. Shortcomings in operational technique and increased resistance to the poison 1080 …

Vertebrate Pest Management And Changing Times, Donald A. Spencer
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
Everywhere one turns today there are problems. The gristmills of doom and disaster are experiencing a heyday marketing this situation as one of crisis and extinction. An advantage of being an oldster in this society is that one has the perspective to recognize that these are only problems, some simple, some complex, presenting a challenge for solution to all who will lay aside their emotions and face reality. In presenting this overview of vertebrate pest management programs, I find I must dwell too frequently on "problems." This should not be interpreted as a pessimistic outlook. Sound data with professional guidance …
Dispersal And Some Implications For Control Of The California Ground Squirrel, Dennis C. Stroud
Dispersal And Some Implications For Control Of The California Ground Squirrel, Dennis C. Stroud
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
Data from current research and from the literature indicate that a knowledge of dispersal of the California ground squirrel can help to develop control strategy. An understanding of the rate and extent of dispersal may help reduce poor results due to patchy control. A knowledge of dispersal distance can help to determine the size of a buffer zone of control which may reduce the rate of reinvasion. The seasonal timing of dispersal is predictable in the California ground squirrel, and this can help to establish follow-up control.

A Comparison Of Selected Rodenticides For The Control Of The Common Valley Pocket Gopher (Thomomys Bottae), Barry R. Tickes, Lloyd K. Cheathem, John L. Stair
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
The common valley pocket gopher (Thomomys bottae) has become a serious agricultural pest in certain regions of the Lower Colorado River Basin. The mechanical burrow-builder is the most economical and effective method of controlling this pest although many growers and some researchers have reported less-than-satisfactory results when using this technique with currently available rodenticides. Six formulations of three toxicants including strychnine, zinc phosphide and diphacinone were applied with the burrow-builder to assess their efficacy. Results indicated that negligible control is achieved with 0.35 and 0.5% strychnine although these are the most commonly used formulations in Arizona. Diphacinone also produced negligible …

Teaching Vertebrate Pest Control: A Challenge To Wildlife Professionals, Robert M. Timm
Teaching Vertebrate Pest Control: A Challenge To Wildlife Professionals, Robert M. Timm
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Vertebrate pest control deals with wild animals that create health hazards, damage resources, or become a general nuisance. Some people prefer the terms "wildlife damage control" or "animal damage control" because they focus on controlling damage rather than controlling animals. This is an important principle. Vertebrate animals that cause damage often have many positive values. In dealing with these situations our objective should always be to reduce or prevent damage; this does not necessarily require the killing of animals. I use the term "vertebrate pest control" because I believe it is less ambiguous than "damage control." When I call an …

A Search For Ddt Residues In The Juneau Icefield, Alaska, Jon Edwin Barber, Russell S. Adams Jr.
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine if DDT residues occurred in the ice of the Juneau Icefield, and 2) to devise a simple, inexpensive method of sampling glacial ice for pesticide residues. No DDT was found in the samples of ice collected strata spanning the 1963 to 1970 period. However, phthalate plasticizers were found in all samples and were assumed to be· due to contamination during collection. The elution time of the phthalate by gas chromatography was identical to that of p, p-DDT. Conversion of DDT to DDD by ultraviolet light was found to remove the phthalate. …

Traditional Small Craft: Motivations For Renewed Interest, Ruth Ann Boragine
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The revival of interest in traditional small craft during the past decade is evidenced in the growth of related associations, museums, and publications and is shown to be reflective of much broader socio-cultural trends. No study has yet been done, however, to determine what motivates the interest of small craft enthusiasts. Are they athletes, retired people, cruising boat owners, or craftsmen? Can they be defined by income level or occupation?
These questions, among others, are addressed through analysis of an interest survey which was distributed randomly to members of two Newport, Rhode Island, yacht clubs, and also to attendants at …

A Preliminary Assessment Of Nutrient Loading Into Narragansett Bay Due To Urban Runoff, Lynne Carter Hanson
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This study is a component of a more comprehensive investigation at the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory, (MERL), University of Rhode Island, that was undertaken in order to assess the potential for eutrophication in both its meanings as a natural and man-induced process occurring in the upper portions of Narragansett Bay and its watershed. This assessment required identification and quantification of the various inputs in order to establish the annual loading and eventual effects of the four important nutrients; ammonia, nitrate-nitrite, silicate and phosphate.

In situ testing was conducted in the Gibson Dome No. 1 (GD-1) borehole in southeastern Utah at depths ranging from 954 to 1,507 m (3,130 to 4,945 feet). These tests were made in a number of salt strata to measure (1) stress-strain behavior of the borehole (hole "squeeze"); (2) short-term borehole creep; and (3) in situ stresses in salt strata. Laboratory triaxial strength and creep tests were conducted on core removed from GD-1 to provide engineering data under a variety of test conditions (stress state, strain rate, and temperature). Results of in situ and laboratory tests will be used to …

Fisheries Research Reports
The results of catching Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) by gillnet and troll lines during a survey extending from June 16 to October 16 1981 are presented.
The catch rate of mackerel obtained by trolling with six lines was found to be 14.35 times greater than that by gillnet, measuring 0.75 miles in length.
From the results presented, a professional fisherman should be able to assess the economic viability of fishing commercially for Spanish mackerel.
Analysis of biometrial and biological data on fish caught allowed determination of (a) length/weight relationship of (i) Spanish mackerel (ii) wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri); (b) sex ratios …

Møller-Plesset Treatment Of Electron Correlation In (Hohoh)-, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The effects of electron correlation on the calculated properties of the (HOHOH)− anion are studied using Møller–Plesset (MP) perturbation theory. With this technique, inclusion of corrections up to third order are shown to provide results quite similar to those obtained with an extensive CI approach when equivalent basis sets are used. Barriers to proton transfer between the two oxygen atoms at a fixed R(OO) distance are computed with a number of basis sets ranging from split‐valence 4–31G to triple‐valence with polarization functions on all atoms, 6–311G∗∗. Each successive enlargement of the basis set leads to a greater barrier. …

Interactions Of Northern Fur Seals And Commercial Fisheries, Charles W. Fowler
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Under international agreement, the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is managed with the objective of obtaining a maximum sustainable yield. Currently the harvest is restricted to subadult males; however, between 1956 and 1968 the fur seal population of the Pribilof Islands was subjected to a harvest of females. This harvest was justified, in part, as an attempt to stimulate the production of greater quantities of harvestable animals (Chapman 1981). A reduction in the population occurred during this period as can be seen in Figure 1. As described in York and Hartley (1981), the female harvest itself provides an …
