Charge Transfer Between Oˉ Ions And O₂ Molecules In The Ground State And Singlet Delta Excited State, Ronald Floyd Mathis Jan 1973

Charge Transfer Between Oˉ Ions And O₂ Molecules In The Ground State And Singlet Delta Excited State, Ronald Floyd Mathis

Doctoral Dissertations

"A crossed-beam apparatus has been built and used to study charge transfer between O⁻ ions and O₂ molecules in the ground state and in the metastable, singlet delta, excited state. The energy of the incident ions ranged from 10 to 10,000 eV.

The cross section for charge transfer between O⁻ and ground state O₂ was found to peak at about 5 keV, as predicted on the basis of the Rapp and Francis theory. At the lower energies there is good agreement with the previous measurements of Snow et al., and Rutherford and Turner, who also used crossed beam techniques. The …

Anionic Polymerization Of A Series Of 5-Membered Cyclocarbosiloxanes, Balaraman Suryanarayanan Jan 1973

Anionic Polymerization Of A Series Of 5-Membered Cyclocarbosiloxanes, Balaraman Suryanarayanan

Doctoral Dissertations

"A study has been made on the anionic polymerization of a series of 5-membered cyclocarbosiloxanes with methyl and/or phenyl substituents. The polymerization was initiated by lithium n-butyldiphenylsilanolate in the presence of tetrahydrofuran. Six 5-membered cyclocarbosiloxanes (2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2,2,5- trimethyl-5-phenyl-1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-diphenyl- 1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2,2-dimethyl-5 ·,5-diphenyl-1-oxa- 2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2-methyl-2,5,5-triphenyl-1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2,2,5,5-tetraphenyl-1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane) were synthesized. Since the chemical shifts of the protons of the cyclic monomers and the polymers formed were different, the rate of polymerization of the cyclic monomers was measured utilizing an NMR spectrometer. The effects of tetrahydrofuran concentration, initiator concentration and water concentration on the rate of polymer formation and on the molecular weight of …

Auger Satellites Of The L₂₃ Auger Emission Bands Of Al, Si, And P, John Junior Melles Jan 1973

Auger Satellites Of The L₂₃ Auger Emission Bands Of Al, Si, And P, John Junior Melles

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this study a detailed investigation of the high energy satellites of the L23 Auger emission bands of Al, Si, and P was made. The satellites are interpreted as arising from double ionization of the L23 shell rather than from a plasmon gain process. The parent-satellite energy separations, ΔE, between like structures were determined and were found to be consistently smaller than the volume plasmon energies measured for the same samples. A comparison of Si and SiO revealed no evidence that ΔE for Si is dependent on the volume plasmon energy of the sample.

The satellite threshold excitation …

Tchebycheff Approximation On A Discrete Point Set: Algorithms Old And New, William Edward Mcbride Jan 1973

Tchebycheff Approximation On A Discrete Point Set: Algorithms Old And New, William Edward Mcbride

Doctoral Dissertations

"Several linear and nonlinear algorithms for solving the discrete Tchebycheff problem are compared in this study. The Lawson algorithm is compared with two more well-known methods of linear Tchebycheff approximation. A new acceleration scheme for the Lawson algorithm is introduced and its performance is tested with an already existing acceleration technique. The new version is found to be better than the previous one but not as effective as the traditional Exchange method.

A nonlinear version of Lawson's algorithm is proposed for the solution of problems having approximating functions which are varisolvent. Some linear theorems of Lawson are extended to the …

Petrography, Chemical Composition, And Stratigraphic Setting Of The Coals Of North-Central Missouri, William Keith Wedge

Doctoral Dissertations

"Under a grant from the National Air Pollution Control Administration, the Missouri Geological Survey undertook a core drilling program to learn more about the coals in north-central Missouri. The stratigraphic setting and chemical and petrographic characteristics of 43 complete samples of coal recovered from 13 diamond drill holes in the exploration program in north-central Missouri are major contributions of this study. These samples represent twelve different coal beds of the Atokan and Desmoinesian Series of the Pennsylvanian System of Missouri and range in thickness from 9.6 to 44.4 inches. They have an average thickness of 20.4 inches and a combined …

The Synthesis And Spectroscopic Properties Of Vanadium(Iii) Squarate Trihydrate, S. M. Condren, Hector O. Mcdonald Jan 1973

The Synthesis And Spectroscopic Properties Of Vanadium(Iii) Squarate Trihydrate, S. M. Condren, Hector O. Mcdonald

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vanadium(III) squarate trihydrate has been prepared; and the infrared, X-ray diffraction, and electronic spectra of the complex indicate that the central metal atom is in a slightly distorted octahedral field. A thermogravimetric study has shown that the complex loses three water molecules upon heating. A hydroxy-bridged, dimeric structure has been proposed from these data. © 1973, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

Three new localities of Niphadobota (=Chionea) alpina in the French southern Jura allow the author to state that this insect’s climatic requirements explain the biogeography of the species; the origin of the colonization of caves by this dipteran is considered.

Beobachtungen An Markierten Und Unmarkierten Köcherfliegen (Trichoptera) In Der Bärenhöhle Im Lonetal (Schwäbischer Jura), Klaus Dobat Jan 1973

Beobachtungen An Markierten Und Unmarkierten Köcherfliegen (Trichoptera) In Der Bärenhöhle Im Lonetal (Schwäbischer Jura), Klaus Dobat

International Journal of Speleology

1.The Bärenhöhle, one of the ten caves situated in the episodically water-bearing valley of the Lone (Swabian Jura), serves as summer quarters for the total of ten species of Trichoptera, most of which are Micropterna nycterobia and Stenophylax permistus. 2.Counts carried out in this cave from 1967-1972 and observations of flood and dry-periods of the Lone during the same years make evident that the number of Trichoptera flying into the cave seems to depend in a large measure on the seasonal activity of the creek: a steady flow of water makes the undisturbed development of larvae possible and results …

Description of three eyeless and apigmented new species of Trichoniscidae which have been found in Su Mannau cave in Sardinia. Two of them belong to the genus Catalauniscus Vandel: Catalauniscus hirundinella n.sp. offering few relationships with the spanish species C. espanoli Vandel, and Catalauniscus puddui n.sp. which has also similar features to an iberian form, C. bolivari Arcangeli. The third (Scotoniscus janas n.sp.) belongs to the endemic genus Scotoniscus Racovitza, until now monospecific and represented by a series of subspecies from the Northern Pyrenees, all nearly related to the specific form S. macromelos Racovitza. The discovery of those three …

Fluorescent Dye Determination Of Groundwater Movement And Contamination In Permeable Rock Strata, Charles P. Giammona Jan 1973

Fluorescent Dye Determination Of Groundwater Movement And Contamination In Permeable Rock Strata, Charles P. Giammona

International Journal of Speleology

A preliminary inquiry to the extent and boundaries of subterranean waterways within the Mystery Cave System was explored. Rhodamine WT dye in 500 ml quantities was used in fluormetry determinations of surface flow to ground water basins. A Turner Model 111 fluorometer was utilized for detection purposes powered by a portable 12 volt, 220 amp hour battery-inverter system. It was shown that water entered underground passageways through sinkholes or highly creviced limestone/dolomite rock strata and reappeared several kilometres downstream. The outflow appears in the form of “springs”. The possibility exists that contaminated surface water may seep through the soil for …

Note Sulla Distribuzione Dei Trichoniscidae In Sardegna (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscoidea), Roberto Argano, Mauro Rampini

International Journal of Speleology

The study of the biogeography of the eight species of Isopoda Trichoniscidae from Sardegna brings to consider the faunistic relationships happened in the past between the island and the Pyrenees. Two of the species are eutroglophilous and rather widespread; the other six are troglobic and endemic to Sardinia. Five of the latter show strong affinity to Pyrenees forms. A detailed description is given of the distribution of the various species. This distribution makes possible some observations on the history of the fauna of the island.

A New Cavernicolous Species Of The Pseudoscorpion Genus Roncus L. Koch, 1873 (Neobisiidae, Pseudoscorpiones) From The Balkan Peninsula, Božidar P. M. Ćurčić Jan 1973

A New Cavernicolous Species Of The Pseudoscorpion Genus Roncus L. Koch, 1873 (Neobisiidae, Pseudoscorpiones) From The Balkan Peninsula, Božidar P. M. Ćurčić

International Journal of Speleology

Roncus (Parablothrus) pljakici, a new species of cave living pseudoscorpions, is described from the cave ‘Pecina u selu Vrelo’ on Mt. Stara Planina, East Serbia. The problem of its taxonomic position in the subgenus is discussed. The new species is the first representative of Parablothrus to be found in Serbia. It seems possible that R. (P.) pljakici represents an endemic species, specialized for a cavernicolous way of living. The analogies of this and other species of the subgenus point to some similar phenomena which occur in other genera of Balkan false scorpions (Ćurčić 1972). In all these cases, a …

Description of the male of the Mexican cavernicolous Stenasellid Mexistenasellus parzefalli Magniez, 1972, from Huizache Cave, San-Luis Potosi State, Mexico. In the female with a brood pouch, the coxopodit of the maxilliped contains two provisional, oostegit-like plates, whereas the ovigerous female of european Stenasellids have only the inner one. This temporary sexual female character is known in other Isopods, such as the cavernicolous Caecosphaeroma burgundum Dollfus.

Les Populations Naturelles De Stanasellus Virei Dollfus (Crustacé Asellote Troglobie), Guy Magniez Jan 1973

Les Populations Naturelles De Stanasellus Virei Dollfus (Crustacé Asellote Troglobie), Guy Magniez

International Journal of Speleology

Many cavernicolous and phreatic localities are known for the species Stenasellus virei. Some of these, which harbor a rather abundant population have been studied for several years. The endemic populations from permanent waters of some fossil karstic systems seem to have an abnormal composition. They include especially large individuals (juvenile stages being rare). They differ from the phreatic populations, which exhibit a normal distribution in size groups with a normal percentage of juveniles. These differences in the structure of populations may result from physical differences between the habitat in free waters of caves and in phreatic water, and from …

Fourteen of these boluses contained food, demonstrating success in at least 67% of the feeding attempts.

Stratigraphic Comparison Of The Precambrian Wyman And Johnnie Formations In The Western Great Basin, California, Johnnie Nathan Moore Jan 1973

Stratigraphic Comparison Of The Precambrian Wyman And Johnnie Formations In The Western Great Basin, California, Johnnie Nathan Moore

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Precambrian Johnnie Formation in the Death Valley area and to the south is separable into two facies. The southern facies contains six distinct members: the transitional, quartzite, lower carbonate-bearing, siltstone, upper carbonate-bearing, and Rainstorm members. Dolomite, quartzite, and mudstone characterize the southern facies, as does the presence of the Johnnie oolite. To the north the Johnnie oolite pinches out and the amount of mudstone in the formation increases. The dominantly mudstone northern facies contains local gray limestone lenses closely similar to limestone in the Wyman Formation in the White-Inyo Mountains. Generally outcrops of the northern facies of the Johnnie …

A Study Of The Pulse-Height Response Of Silicon Surface-Barrier Detectors To High-Energy Heavy Ions, Gregory Dan Smith Jan 1973

A Study Of The Pulse-Height Response Of Silicon Surface-Barrier Detectors To High-Energy Heavy Ions, Gregory Dan Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

"The pulse-height defect (PHD) of high-energy heavy ions in silicon surface-barrier detectors can be divided into three components: (1) energy loss in the gold-surface layer, (2) a nuclear-stopping defect, and (3) a defect due to recombination of electron-hole pairs in the plasma created by the heavy ion. The plasma recombination portion of the PHD was the subject of this study using the variation of the PHD with (1) the angle of incidence of incoming heavy ions, and (2) changes in the detector bias. The Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory was used to produce scattered beam ions …

Laser Scattering Measurements Of Droplet Growth In Binary Mixtures. Ii. H2o And Argon H2o And Helium, M. A. Viettit, Burton Schuster Jan 1973

Laser Scattering Measurements Of Droplet Growth In Binary Mixtures. Ii. H2o And Argon H2o And Helium, M. A. Viettit, Burton Schuster

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Water droplet growth rates in a Wilson cloud chamber were measured in Ar-H2O and He-H2O media. These rates were determined in the size range 0.45-10.0 u.m by detection of oscillations in the intensity of polarized light from a He-Ne laser source scattered at 30° by the droplet population. Pressure and initial temperature were measured in the chamber for use in the computation of three droplet growth theories for comparison to experiment. Experiments were conducted in supersaturations ranging from 1.04 to 3.45.
