Base-Induced Reactions Of P-Nitrobenzyl Compounds, Paul Henry Ruehle
Base-Induced Reactions Of P-Nitrobenzyl Compounds, Paul Henry Ruehle
Doctoral Dissertations
"The base-induced reactions of several p-nitrobenzyl compounds were studied. The products varied with changes in the leaving groups. With relatively poor leaving groups (Cl, S⁺(Me)₂), p,p'- dinitrostilbene was produced in good yield. The products of the reaction of p-nitrobenzyl chloride and hydroxide ion in 50% aqueous dioxane were 52.0% p,p'-dinitrostilbene, 43.9% cis- and trans-p,p'-dinitrostilbene oxides, 3.2% p-nitrobenzyl alcohol, and traces of other compounds. With dissolved oxygen, no stilbene was produced; the main product was 88% cis- and trans-p,p'-dinitrostilbene oxides. The addition of small amounts of di-t-butyl nitroxide caused a decrease in both the rate of the reaction and the amount …

Surface Electromagnetic Waves With Damping I. Isotropic Media Ii. Anisotropic Media, Gary Shannon Kovener
Doctoral Dissertations
Paper 1: “Surface electromagnetic wave (SEW) dispersion curves are usually calculated using a simple equation derived from Maxwell’s equations and boundary conditions. When complex dielectric functions are used for the two media, the component of the propagation vector along the surface kx becomes infinite as the frequency ω approaches the surface polariton frequency ωs if ω is considered complex and kx real. On the other hand, if kx is considered complex and ω real, the dispersion curves bend back toward smaller kx as ω approaches ωs. We have previously demonstrated that both types …
Models For Molecular Vibration, Allan Bruce Capps
Models For Molecular Vibration, Allan Bruce Capps
Masters Theses
“The purpose of the investigation is to determine if a classical model can be used to characterize molecular vibrational and librational (restricted rotation) frequencies. In general, the model treats a molecule as asymmetrical and rigid and simulates the intermolecular forces by springs along the bonds. Molecules constrained to a plane and molecules free to move in three dimensions are analyzed. The frequencies of water molecules are investigated, in particular. The model and analytic components are found to function well. Within the limits set for the model, the water molecule simulation is not successful as the motion becomes anharmonic for energy …
Comparison Of Scatter Storage Techniques Using An Analysis Of Variance Model, Robert Lee Kitsch
Comparison Of Scatter Storage Techniques Using An Analysis Of Variance Model, Robert Lee Kitsch
Masters Theses
"An analysis of variance model is developed to determine if a significant difference exists between various scatter storage techniques. The model is a two-factor hierarchical mixed design with each combination of transformation and search method considered as a treatment. The data used in the analysis is obtained from a computer program which provides statistics on the number of probes needed to load the (k+l)st item into a table for the different treatments. An ANOVA table was then computed for various load factors.
A significant difference among the treatments was detected for load factors above .4. Comparison of individual treatments using …
Interpretation Of Imagery Lineations, Logan Creek Area, Southeast Missouri, Gregory Paul Smith
Interpretation Of Imagery Lineations, Logan Creek Area, Southeast Missouri, Gregory Paul Smith
Masters Theses
"Depletion of ore in Missouri's old lead districts and the opening of the state's new lead district adds impetus to understanding and delineating geologic structure in and adjacent to the new lead district. Image and geomorphic analysis, hydrologic data, and subsurface structural contour mapping are used in interpretation of geologic structure in Dent, Shannon, Reynolds, and Carter counties, Missouri. Unlike the time consuming surface geologic mapping, the modes of investigation used in this study enabled the writer to make a larger, regional-scale study with results comparable to those attainable by surface mapping. The area is covered by thick residual soils …
Coexisting Actinolite And Hornblende From West-Central New Hampshire, John B. Brady
Coexisting Actinolite And Hornblende From West-Central New Hampshire, John B. Brady
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
The coexistence of actinolite and hornblende and of cummingtonite and hornblende has been observed in garnet-zone and staurolite-kyanite-zone amphibolites of the Ammonoosuc Volcanics near Hanover, New Hampshire. The amphibole pairs occur both as separate grains and as intergrowths with boundaries that are optically and chemically sharp, but geometrically irregular; no exsolution lamellae were observed.Electron microprobe analyses of the amphibole pairs show that: (1) hornblende is richer in Al, Na, K, Ti, and Fea+,and has a lower Mg/(Me f Fe) ratio than the coexisting actinolite; (2) hornblende is enriched in Al, Na, and Ca, but has a similar Mel(Mg f Fe) …

A Study Of The Adsorption Of Some Atmospheric Gases On Soils Of The Willamette Valley River Basin, Thomas R. Quale
A Study Of The Adsorption Of Some Atmospheric Gases On Soils Of The Willamette Valley River Basin, Thomas R. Quale
Dissertations and Theses
Recent work indicates that microorganisms present in soils can remove carbon monoxide from the atmosphere and as such constitutes a major sink. B.E.T. adsorption studies were carried out on representative soils from the Willamette Valley River Basin in order to determine their adsorptive characteristics for carbon monoxide and other gases. Attempts were made to isolate, through a non-soildestructive sterilization, the adsorptive characteristics of the soil microorganisms as well as of the test soil.
The carbon monoxide studies show physical adsorption equivalent to the coverage of a few per cent of the surface area at 25.0° and 76 cm-Hg. Adsorption studies …

A Direct Measurement Of The Ratio Of The Reaction Cross Sections For Two-Photon And Three-Photon Positron Annihilation In Aluminum And Silver, Robert Maurice Heavenrich
Masters Theses
The probability of annihilation of a positron with its antiparticle, an electron, is spin dependent. Since both particles have spin component one -half, there are two possible relative orientations of their spins they can either be aligned (parallel) in the 3S, triplet, state with total spin component │Sz│= ½ n - ½ n = 1 n or they can be opposite (antiparallel) in the 1S; singlet, state with│Sz│= ½ n - ½ n = 0. To conserve energy and angular momentum, annihilation from the triplet state must result in the creation of an odd …

Mathematical Simulation Of Temperatures In Deep Impoundments: Verification Tests Of The Water Resources Engineers, Inc. Model - Horsetooth And Flaming Gorge Reservoirs, Engineering And Research Center, Bureau Of Reclamation
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Successful use of predictive mathematical models requires verification of the accuracy of the models by applying them to existing situations where the prediction can be compared with reality. A Corps of Engineers' modification of a deep reservoir thermal stratification model developed by Water Resources Engineers, Inc., was applied to two existing Bureau of Reclamation reservoirs for verification. Diffusion coefficients used for the Corps' Detroit Reservoir were found to apply to Horsetooth Reservoir in Colorado, for which very good computer input data were available. The Detroit diffusion coefficients gave a reasonable simulation of Flaming Gorge Reservoir in Wyoming and Utah, which …

Application Of An Avian Bioenergetics Simulation Model To Red-Winged Blackbird - Crop Relations, John A. Wiens, Melvin I. Dyer
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The impact of bird populations upon the properties or processes of ecosystems is mediated through patterns and magnitudes of energy flow. This impact may be either direct, by processing of large quantities of energy or nutrients, or indirect, through feedback control of other ecosystem rate processes or components. In either case, however, the impact is a result of the population dynamics and the pattern and magnitude of food consumption of the birds. Recent research by several groups points to a relatively small direct impact on birds on most natural ecosystems (Wiens 1973). Impact through feedback control, a more difficult relationship …

Plant-Animal Interactions: The Effects Of Redwinged Blackbirds On Corn Growth, Melvin I. Dyer
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) in agricultural crops likely create the worst possible images in the minds of various segments of our society today. To some there is only repulsion, which results in desire for total annihilation of Red-wings (by many agriculturists); while to others there is only attraction, which results in desire to leave the situation absolutely alone (by conservancy minded purists). The great middle ground includes those who vascillate back and forth, between these extremes, those who are not cognizant of the problems, and those that do not care. This picture apparently is a common problem for our wildlife …

Originally we had the old Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) which involved Health, Education and Welfare, Interior, Food and Drug Administration but was administered by USDA. This has been changed by the passage of the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act (FEPCA). Now in certain cases you will find that EPA is working through the States under the FEPCA law to develop policy. You will find EPA and the amended FIFRA will play a very important role in your business for several years.

Sociocultural Impact Of Reservoirs On Local Government Institutions, Philip Drucker, Jerry Eugene Clark, Lesker Dianne Smith
KWRRI Research Reports
This study of the probable sociocultural impact of a proposed reservoir in central Kentucky on the institutions of local governments of a community adjacent to the reservoir utilizes anthropological concepts of social values and cultural and social change as well as anthropological research techniques. Data on observed impact on the same institutions in communities adjacent to two recently completed Kentucky reservoirs permit inferences as to probable directions and extent of reservoir-related change. Specific aspects of impact considered include: effects of reduction of the county tax base due to Federal acquisition of lands, including necessity for increased severity of taxes and …

Evolution Of Platt Shoals Northern North Carolina Shelf: Inferences From Areal Geology, Philip C. Sears
OES Theses and Dissertations
The evolution of Platt Shoals, a complex ridge and trough system on the south side of the Albemarle Shelf Valley, was determined and the modern hydraulic regime was inferred. The methods used were surficial grain size, 11 vibracores, seismic profiling and bathymetric maps. Platt Shoals developed in a three step process. The first, step was the formation of a substrate of late Pleistocene regressive deposits from 15,000 to 30,000 yr B. P. The second step, occurring approximately 11,000 yr B. P., was the formation of estuary mouth shoals of the ancestral Albemarle River. Between 4,4.00 to 5,000 yr B. P., …
