Proof And Intuition, Michael Detlefsen
Proof And Intuition, Michael Detlefsen
ACMS Journal 2004
This paper aims to give a clear exposition of two critiques of logicism. The intuitionist, Brouwer, is best known for rejecting the law of the excluded middle (his "special critique.") The paper argues that Brouwer's "general critique" is deeper and more extensive than this. That is, Brouwer is arguing that mathematical knowledge requires a kind of direct mathematical experience, analogous to sensory experience and this cannot be attained simply by linguistic operations independently of experience. It also discusses Poincare's critiques - that there is a huge difference between genuine mathematical insight and an ability to logically manipulate mathematical truths and …

Isotope Content And Temperature Of Precipitation In Southern Nevada, August 1983-August 1986, W. K. Milne, Larry Benson, P. W. Mckinley
United States Geological Survey: Publications
From August 1983 through August 1986, 429 precipitation samples of 112 precipitation events were collected at 12 stations in southern Nevada. Some of these samples were analyzed for oxygen-18, deuterium, and tritium. The results of these analyses as well as the air temperature and the precipitation measured at the collection sites are tabulated in this report. The sampling program provides a data base for future interpretive studies on the timing and origin of ground-water recharge in the Yucca Mountain region, of southern Nevada.
The stable-isotope composition of precipitation is the result of fractionation processes that occur in the atmosphere. Isotopic …

Determination Of Dissociation Energies And Thermal Functions Of Hydrogen‐Bond Formation Using High Resolution Ftir Spectroscopy, B. A. Wofford, M. E. Eliades, Shannon Lieb, J. W. Bevan
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
A technique which employs high resolution Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is demonstrated for evaluation of hydrogen bonddissociation energiesD 0 and D e . Results for HCN‐‐HF give a D 0=20.77(22) and D e =28.77(45) kJ/mol which are compared with previously determined values obtained from microwave absolute intensity measurements and a b i n i t i o molecular orbital calculations. Rovibrational band information available for HCN‐‐HF also permits evaluation of thermal functions of dimer formation in kJ/mol: ΔU ○ 298.2 =20.1(2), ΔH ○ 298.2 =22.6(2), ΔG ○ 298.2 =59.4(2), ΔS ○ 298.2 =−0.1235.

Molecular Dynamics In Hydrogen‐Bonded Interactions: A Preliminary Experimentally Determined Harmonic Stretching Force Field For Hcn‐‐‐Hf, B. A. Wofford, Shannon Lieb, J. W. Bevan
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Observation of the 2ν1 overtone band in the hydrogen‐bonded complex HCN‐‐‐HF permits evaluation of the anharmonicity constant X 1 1=−116.9(1) cm− 1 and determination of the anharmonicity corrected fundamental frequency ω1. This information, and available data from previous rovibrational analyses in the common and perdeuterated isotopic species of HCN‐‐‐HF, offer an opportunity for calculation of an approximate stretching harmonic force field. With the assumptions f 1 2=f 2 4=0.0, the remaining force constants (in mdyn/Å) are evaluated as: f 1 1=8.600(20), f 2 2=6.228(9), f 3 3=19.115(40), f 4 …

45. Clay Mineralogy Of The Lower Cretaceous Deep-Sea Fan, Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 603, Lower Continental Rise Off North Carolina, Mary Anne Holmes
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The clay mineralogy of Lower Cretaceous deep-sea fan sediment in the western North Atlantic is dominated by smectite in most intervals, and by illite in samples from intervals of high sand input. Different intervals of high sand input are enriched in kaolinite. Kaolinite and illite levels do not correlate in this sediment, indicating that the input of each clay type was independent and represents either a different provenance or a different depositional mode. The latter hypothesis is preferred because equivalent, continental strata have clay mineral suites dominated in most cases by kaolinite, and in other cases by illite. Only marine …

A Comparison Of The Relative Sediment Transport Of Quartz And Aragonite Sand For Use As Beach Renourishment Materials In South Florida, Brian Lewis Lipsitz
A Comparison Of The Relative Sediment Transport Of Quartz And Aragonite Sand For Use As Beach Renourishment Materials In South Florida, Brian Lewis Lipsitz
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
An evaluation of the relative rates of sediment transport of an oolitic aragonite sand and a quartz quarry sand as possible beach renourishment materials has been conducted. When comparing equal volumes, the aragonite experienced less transport than the quartz in both the longshore and in the onshore-offshore directions. When comparing equal size fractions, in sizes 0.35mm and smaller, aragonite was less transportable. The quartz was less transportable in the sizes greater than 0.35mm. This trend was observed in two separate experiments and is attributed to the effective density ratio of aragonite to quartz, dissimilarities in roundness and sphericity, and to …
The Gradient Model Load Balancing Method, Frank C. H. Lin, Robert M. Keller
The Gradient Model Load Balancing Method, Frank C. H. Lin, Robert M. Keller
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
A dynamic load balancing method is proposed for a class of large-diameter multiprocessor systems. The method is based on the "gradient model," which entails transferring backlogged tasks to nearby idle processors according to a pressure gradient indirectly established by requests from idle processors. The algorithm is fully distributed and asynchronous. Global balance is achieved by successive refinements of many localized balances. The gradient model is formulated so as to be independent of system topology.

A Theoretical Investigation Of Some Low-Lying Singlet States Of 1,3-Butadiene, Robert J. Cave, Ernest R. Davidson
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Results are presented from extensive ab initio calculations on several low-lying singlet states of cis- and trans-1,3-butadiene. The results indicate a qualitative difference between the cis and trans isomers for the lowest π → π* transition. For the cis isomer, the first excited singlet state of the same symmetry as the ground state is found to lie above the lowest π → π* transition, and we estimate that this is also the case for the trans isomer.

Zeros Of Bouligand-Nagumo Fields, Flow-Invariance And The Bouwer Fixed Point Theorem, Nicolae H. Pavel
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Mainly, in this paper we prove that if D is a convex compact of Rn, then the Brouwer fixed point property of D is equivalent to the fact that every Bouligand-Nagums vector field on D, has a zero in D. Using a version of this result on a normed space, as well as the Day [9] and Dugundji [10] theorems, we give a new proof to the fact that in every infinite dimensional Banach space X, there exists a continuous function from the closed unit ball B (of X) into B, without fixed points in B. We also show that …
Habitat Use By Beaver Along The Big Sioux River, Charles D. Dieter
Habitat Use By Beaver Along The Big Sioux River, Charles D. Dieter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Habitat utilization and lodge site selection by beaver (Castor canadensis) were investigated during 1985 and 1986 along the Big Sioux River in eastern South Dakota. Because livestock grazing has affected the number and size of trees available for beaver use, the study area was portioned into grazed, ungrazed, and farmed habitat. Diameter at breast height (DBH) of trees in grazed areas was greater (p < 0.01) than in ungrazed or farmed areas. Almost half (48%) of the trees in ungrazed areas were small (DBH < 7.5 cm), while a majority (58%) of the trees in grazed areas had large diameters (DBH > 30 cm). Beaver activity was evident on 286 of 2410 (11.8%) trees (DBH > 2.5 cm) and 756 of 7,794 (9.7%) stems (DBH < 2.5cm) sampled. A greater proportion (p < 0.01) of trees were cut by beavers in ungrazed than in grazed areas. Beaver did not select tree species for cutting according to availability (p < 0.01). Green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) was selected for cutting while both boxelder (Acer negundo) and hawthorn (Crataegus mollis) were selected against. Sandbar willow (Salix exigua) stems were important for food and building materials. Trees cut by beaver were significantly smaller in diameter (p < 0.01) than uncut trees. Mean distance from water of cut trees was also less (p < 0.01) than for uncut trees. Over half (52%) of the trees damaged by beaver were not killed and either resprouted or remained alive and standing. Of 8 variables examined at lodge sites, analysis indicated that the 2 most important factors in beaver lodge site selection were riverbank slope and horizontal cover density between 0.9 m and 1.8 m above ground (read from 10 m). Mean slope of the riverbank at lodge sites (40.7 degrees) was greater (p < 0.01) than at control sites (26.7 degrees), while mean horizontal cover density between 0.9 m and 1.8 m (read from 10 m) was also greater (p < 0.01) at lodge sites (53%) than at control sites (28%). Ungrazed habitat was selected by beaver for lodge sites, and grazed areas were selected against. Although 40% of the study area was ungrazed, 27 of 33 (82%) active lodges were located in these areas. Ungrazed areas along the Big Sioux River are important for beaver populations and selection for these areas by beaver reflects habitat quality.
Rainbow Trout Cage Culture Utilizing Different Strains, Stocking Densities, And Feeding Methods In Eastern South Dakota Dugout Ponds, Jay Patrick Maher
Rainbow Trout Cage Culture Utilizing Different Strains, Stocking Densities, And Feeding Methods In Eastern South Dakota Dugout Ponds, Jay Patrick Maher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) cage culture techniques were investigated in dugouts as part of a continuing program to evaluate the potential of small-scale, landowner-based aquaculture operations. Trout raised in the study did not reach a marketable size (200 g) due to the short growing season and small size at stocking. No significant (P >0.05) differences in growth were detected between stocking densities of 60, 80, 100, and 120 fish/m³. Demand feeding resulted in significantly greater length (P≤0.01), weight (P≤0.01), and relative weight (P≤0.05) than hand feeding in both years tested. Rainbow trout of the Hildebrand strain reached a significantly greater …

Impact Of Grazing Systems On Rodent And Cottontail Rabbit Populations In South Texas, Meenakshi Nagendran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Study sites were established at Rob and Bessie Welder Refuge and Encino Division of the King Ranch in south Texas to monitor the impact of Short-duration cell grazing (SDG) and Continuous grazing on small mammal and cottontail rabbit populations. Small mammals were live trapped (With occasional snap trapping) and cottontails were spotlighted. Vertical and horizontal components of vegetative structure were measured in terms of percent cover. There was paucity of rodents on the Welder Refuge – 8 captures for 9705 trap nights. In 1984 127 cottontails/km) and in 1985-1986 64 cottontails were seen along 436.8 km of road transects (.14 …
On A Multi-Channel Transportation Loss System With Controlled Input And Controlled Service, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow
On A Multi-Channel Transportation Loss System With Controlled Input And Controlled Service, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
A multi-channel loss queueing system is investigated. The input stream is a controlled point process. The service in each of m parallel channels depends on the state of the system at certain moments of time when input and service may be controlled. To obtain explicitly the limiting distribution of the main process (Zt) (the number of busy channels) in equilibrium, an auxiliary three dimensional process with two additional components (one of them is a semi-Markov process) is treated as semi-regenerative process. An optimization problem is discussed. Simple expressions for an objective function are derived.

Forest Conservation In Nepal: Encouraging Women's Participation, Augusta Molnar
Forest Conservation In Nepal: Encouraging Women's Participation, Augusta Molnar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDS focuses on ways in which women have been involved in a government forest conservation and restoration program in Nepal. As is common with many large-scale projects with a general impact, women were not a direct focus of the project's original design. As activities got underway, however, both the Nepali staff and their expatriate colleagues quickly realized that the direct involvement of women was crucial to the success of the project's participatory strategy. Over the initial five years, 1980 to 1985, a number of approaches to addressing women's needs and generating their active participation were tried. The …

Mpj: A Proposed Java Message Passing Api And Environment For High Performance Computing, Mark Baker, Bryan Carpenter
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
In this paper we sketch out a proposed reference implementation for message passing in Java (MPJ), an MPI-like API from the Message-Passing Working Group of the Java Grande Forum [1,2]. The proposal relies heavily on RMI and Jini for finding computational resources, creating slave processes, and handling failures. User-level communication is implemented efficiently directly on top of Java sockets.
Statistical Analysis Of A Compound Power-Law Model For Repairable Systems, Max Engelhardt, Lee J. Bain
Statistical Analysis Of A Compound Power-Law Model For Repairable Systems, Max Engelhardt, Lee J. Bain
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Conclusions - A compound (mixed) Poisson distribution is sometimes used as an alternative to the Poisson distribution for count data. Such a compound distribution, which has a negative binomial form, occurs when the population consists of Poisson distributed individuals, but with intensities which have a gamma distribution. A similar situation can occur with a repairable system when failure intensities of each system are different. A more general situation is considered where the system failures are distributed according to nonhomogeneous Poisson processes having Power Law intensity functions with gamma distributed intensity parameter. If the failures of each system in a population …
Organization For Collection Development In Medium-Sized Academic Libraries, Carol W. Cubberley
Organization For Collection Development In Medium-Sized Academic Libraries, Carol W. Cubberley
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
At the University of Central Florida Library, the librarians with collection development assignments, and the Head of Collection Development, were frustrated in their attempts to fulfill their responsibilities. Those librarians did not report to the Department Head, but to other departments, and only a small percentage of their time was set aside for collection development. This meant that collection development duties frequently were deferred to other duties. There also was uncertainty about what duties could be expected of these librarians. Some functioned only as liaisons to academic departments, while others did extensive selection of material, wrote collection development policies, and …
