The Lure Crop Alternative, Steven D. Fairaizl, William K. Pfeifer Apr 1987

The Lure Crop Alternative, Steven D. Fairaizl, William K. Pfeifer

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Lure crops are proposed as an alternative to scaring waterfowl. The lure crop works on the principle of permitting waterfowl to feed undisturbed for the duration of the damage season in an unharvested field of their choice thereby utilizing trampled grain. Waterfowl from adjacent areas are encouraged to use the lure crop through the use of scaring devices placed in protected fields. General criteria for implementation of a lure crop project and specific criteria for lure crop purchases are presented. Factors contributing to a successful lure crop and problems which reduced lure crop effectiveness are identified. Benefit/cost analysis of lure …

Rheologic Properties And Kinematics Of Emplacement Of The Chaos Jumbles Rockfall Avalanche, Lassen Volcanic National Park, California, Dean B. Eppler, Jonathan H. Fink, Raymond Fletcher Apr 1987

Rheologic Properties And Kinematics Of Emplacement Of The Chaos Jumbles Rockfall Avalanche, Lassen Volcanic National Park, California, Dean B. Eppler, Jonathan H. Fink, Raymond Fletcher

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Chaos Jumbles is a rockfall avalanche deposit that was emplaced by three separate events ~ 300 years ago. Deposits from each event are distinguishable on the basis of morphology, size variation of large dacitic surface clasts, and by the color of both the matrix and entrained dacitic blocks. Steep lateral and distal deposit margins and surface features such as folds and apparent strike-slip faults indicate that each rockfall avalanche had a finite yield strength and was being actively deformed and sheared throughout the body of the moving deposit, rather than strictly along a basal surface. Kinematic analysis of the …

The Military Sealift Command: Their Potential Role In Providing Military Logistic Support To The Persian Gulf, Kevin W. Nicholas Apr 1987

The Military Sealift Command: Their Potential Role In Providing Military Logistic Support To The Persian Gulf, Kevin W. Nicholas

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The ultimate goal of the U.S. Maritime Strategy is to project power into all the oceans of the world. By projecting power over this vast a geographic area, the U.S. is able to provide a deterrent force that will inhibit the development of a significant hostile military action, anywhere in the world. The ability to support this global peacekeeping force hinges on the capability of the U.S. to provide a strong logistic support organization. From a waterborne perspective, the Indian Ocean is the one geographic area of the world that presents the greatest logistic challenge. The U.S. Navy and the …

Duck Nest Success On South Dakota Game Production Areas, S. Gay Simpson Apr 1987

Duck Nest Success On South Dakota Game Production Areas, S. Gay Simpson

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Duck nesting success was studied on South Dakota Game Production Areas in 1985 and 1986. Mayfield success rates for all species combined were 28.0 and 28.4 percent, respectively. Predators were responsible for nearly 90 percent of nest failures. Results from lake Albert Island and Hogsback served to demonstrate potential for intensive management to increase duck nesting success.

Duck Nest Success And Predators In North Dakota, South Dakota, And Montana: The Central Flyway Study, Michael A. Johnson, Thomas C. Hinz, Thomas L. Kuck

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Data on duck nest success and the distribution and abundance of nest predators were obtained from nine study areas in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. Success rates were extremely low due to predation and duck production over much of the region may be insufficient to maintain populations.

Structural Geology And Geothermal Investigation Of The White Sulphur Springs Area, Montana, William G. Gierke Apr 1987

Structural Geology And Geothermal Investigation Of The White Sulphur Springs Area, Montana, William G. Gierke

Masters Theses

Sevier thrusting in the White Sulphur Springs area was associated with left-lateral movement along the Lewis and Clark line . During Middle Miocene time, the Lewis and Clark line exhibited right-lateral movement, forming extensional features that either truncated Sevier structures or followed preexisting Sevier zones of weakness.

The Smith River Valley is a pull-apart basin that is filled with Tertiary volcanic ash and clay-rich sediments that are thermally nonconductive relative to surrounding rocks.

Hydrothermal activity in the area is associated with a structurally controlled circulation system accompanied by a high thermal gradient. Thermal discharge is constrained along the north-trending White …

Search For An Instability On A Quenched-Liquid Interface, Steven N. Rauseo, Nalini Easwar, James V. Maher Apr 1987

Search For An Instability On A Quenched-Liquid Interface, Steven N. Rauseo, Nalini Easwar, James V. Maher

Physics: Faculty Publications

We searched for signs of an instability on the interface between the two phases of a binary-liquid mixture, isobutyric acid and water, after the mixture was quenched further into the two-phase region. Such an instability would be the liquid-liquid analog of the Mullins-Sekerka instability seen in quenched alloys. Never is any dramatic growth observed, but under conditions of small dimensionless quench depth (theta<1.5×10−3), the intensity of light scattered from the interface grows for small values of the momentum transfer k.

The Stratigraphy Of Late Quaternary Deposits In The Payan Mining District, Narino, Colombia, South America, Richard Alan Barringer Apr 1987

The Stratigraphy Of Late Quaternary Deposits In The Payan Mining District, Narino, Colombia, South America, Richard Alan Barringer

OES Theses and Dissertations

Late Quaternary terrace deposits along the Rio Magui consist of cobble or pebble gravels with thick volcanic ash caps. These gravel terrace deposits unconformably overlie a cemented volcanic tuff (Ananias Formation), and are subdivided into two formations (Antigua and Panambi formations) based on the cobble lithology and size, depth of weathering, geomorphic relationships, and heavy mineral assemblages. Carbon-14 dates from wood suggest that the Antigua fan deposits are older (greater than 40,000 YBP) than the lower Panambi alluvium (less tahn 25,000 YBP) which is restricted to lower terraces within the modern river valleys.

Two separate ash units identified by differences …

Predator Management To Increase Duck Nest Success, Harold A. Doty, Anthony J. Rondeau

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Operational programs of seasonal predator management to increase duck production may be economically feasible. Mammalian predators of nesting ducks and their eggs were reduced in numbers on selected areas of west central Minnesota during the nesting seasons 1982-86. Where predators were removed, nest success averaged 30% while nest success on nearby untreated habitat was 10%.

Multicritical Susceptibility Sum Rules, Miron Kaufman, Michael Ma Mar 1987

Multicritical Susceptibility Sum Rules, Miron Kaufman, Michael Ma

Physics Faculty Publications

Asymptotically close to the Nth-order multicritical point of an N-phase system, there are N-1 sum rules involving the mean-field susceptibilities measured in each of the coexisting phases. These sum rules provide the experimentalist a convenient and stringent test of the theory. In particular, they facilitate the detection of nonclassical effects, especially valuable for N>3 where the fluctuation effect is dominated by the classical contribution for three-dimensional systems.

Marketing Kentucky Hay — An Update, J. Kenneth Evans Feb 1987

Marketing Kentucky Hay — An Update, J. Kenneth Evans

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Based on soil capabilities, Kentucky could grow 2-million acres of alfalfa while increasing the acreage of corn and soybeans. Even more than 2-million acres could be grown if Kentucky grown alfalfa should show market demands making it economically competitive with corn and soybeans. Marketing is the key to developing demand which could make hay a $1-billion Kentucky crop.

Many of you have heard or read my comments on marketing hay. In this presentation, I will present a brief review of what I have previously said and then bring you up to date on hay marketing activities since the alfalfa conference …

Optically Phased Laser Transmitter, Janet S. Fender, Salvatore J. Cusumano, Robert R. Butts, Christopher R. Dehainaut

AFIT Patents

An apparatus and technique are described for phasing the outputs of a multiplier telescope array used as a laser transmitter. The technique uses samples of the transmitted beams to control optical path lengths through the separate telescopes so that the beams add coherently at the receiver. The phasing concept is applicable both to systems which provide inputs to the multiple telescopes by dividing a single laser beam and to systems in which the inputs to the telescopes and multiple, phase-locked laser beams. The approach is also compatible with single line and multi-line lasers, and it does not entail stringent alignment …
