Observation Of Possible Supercondictivity At 230 K, C. Y. Huang, L. J. Dries, P. H. Hor, R. L. Meng, C. W. Chu, Richard B. Frankel Jul 1987

Observation Of Possible Supercondictivity At 230 K, C. Y. Huang, L. J. Dries, P. H. Hor, R. L. Meng, C. W. Chu, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

Recently, Chu announced the observation of sharp drops of up to two orders of magnitude in the resistance of several Y-, Sc- and La-based multi-phase Ba–Cu oxide samples at temperatures as high as 240 K. The resistance drops reported did not survive the thermal cyclings for magnetic measurements. Later, M. H. Cohen (personal communication) reported similar anomalies in some Y-based oxides. In the absence of zero resistivity and evidence for the Meissner effect, the sharp resistance drops have been taken only as an indication of the possible existence of superconductivity at these unusually high temperatures. More recently, Chen et al. …

Software Tools For Performance Evaluation Of Concurrent Processing, Rodrogo A. Obando Jul 1987

Software Tools For Performance Evaluation Of Concurrent Processing, Rodrogo A. Obando

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The development and use of software tools for performance evaluation of concurrent processing is presented in this thesis. The particular concurrent processing architecture proposed by Stoughton and Mielke is investigated. The modelling of this architecture is based on Petri net theory and it can be studied making use of circuit theory. Computation of lower bounds for Time Between Outputs (TBO) and Time Between Input and Output (TBIO) can be accomplished by using principles of circuit theory, among others. This new modelling needs to be deeply evaluated and studied. This evaluation and study is accomplished with the tools developed and presented …

Reliability And Throughput Analysis Of A Concatenated Coding System, Robert H. Deng, Daniel J. Costello Jul 1987

Reliability And Throughput Analysis Of A Concatenated Coding System, Robert H. Deng, Daniel J. Costello

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The performance of a concatenated coding scheme for error control in ARQ systems is analyzed for both random error and burst-error channels. In particular, the probability of undetected error and the system throughput are calculated. In this scheme, the inner code is used for both error correction and error detection, and the outer code is used for error detection only. Interleaving/deinterleaving of the outer code is assumed. A retransmission is requested if either the inner code or the outer code detects the Presence of errors. Various coding examples are considered. The results show that concatenated coding can provide extremely high …

United States Military Bases In The Philippines: Their Strategic Importance And Options For Relocation, William D. Barker

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The role of the Philippine bases in augmenting the Maritime Strategy of the United States Navy's regional mission of deterrence and sea lane protection is being closely scrutinized due to a leadership change in the Philippines and possible military budget cuts at home. This study evaluates the assets of the Subic Bay Naval Station, Cubi Point Naval Air Station, and Clark Air Force Base and the support provided by these bases to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean/Persian Gulf. In the event of a peace-time loss of the bases, options for relocation of forces are evaluated. Historical development …

Gresham's Law: Algorithm Drives Out Thought, Sherman K. Stein Jun 1987

Gresham's Law: Algorithm Drives Out Thought, Sherman K. Stein

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

Gresham's law in economics states, "Bad money drives good money out of circulation." An application of this law in mathematical pedagogy states that "Algorithm drives out thought." While universities are ideally places where classes are meant to develop students' independence and critical thinking skills, often mathematics courses reflect this altered version of Gresham's law. This paper demonstrates the ways traditional mathematical pedagogy has held up Gresham's law and presents several suggestions for ways to change this approach to mathematical education to focus more on critical thinking without sacrificing the necessity of algorithm.

Chemical Properties Of Soils And Streams In Natural And Disturbed Forest Ecosystems In The Ouachita Mountains, R. S. Beasley, E. L. Miller, E. R. Lawson Jun 1987

Chemical Properties Of Soils And Streams In Natural And Disturbed Forest Ecosystems In The Ouachita Mountains, R. S. Beasley, E. L. Miller, E. R. Lawson

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

One year of pre-harvest and five years of post-harvest water chemistry data were collected and analyzed for N03-N, TKN, TP, OP, K and Ca on nine small watersheds in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas. Gross exports of all nutrients except TKN were significantly increased by cl earcutting followed by mechanical site preparation and broadcast burning of slash. Discharge-weighted nutrient concentrations were increased only for OP, K and Ca. The treatment effect was brief, lasting only one year. The first harvest of a selection system regime had no measurable effect on gross losses or concentrations of nutrients. Precipitation chemistry measurements …

Land Use Effects On Ground Water Quality In Carbonate Rock Terrain, Kenneth F. Steele, James C. Adamski Jun 1987

Land Use Effects On Ground Water Quality In Carbonate Rock Terrain, Kenneth F. Steele, James C. Adamski

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

A control site with a natural setting and an experimental site with significant agriculture land use were studied in the Ozark Region of Arkansas in order to determine the effect of land use on water quality in a carbonate rock terrain. The vast majority of the two sites have the Boone Limestone exposed which combined with the underlying St. Joe is the major aquifer for drinking water in the area. The sites also are similar in terms of lineament patterns (number, length and orientation), soil, slope and vegetation. Ground water samples were collected primarily from springs during three seasons (late …

The Evolution Of Text Formatting Languages, Dirk Herr-Hoyman Jun 1987

The Evolution Of Text Formatting Languages, Dirk Herr-Hoyman

Masters Theses

Text, as seen in books and magazines, can take on three forms: string, graphic (two-dimensional), and image (digitized pictures). Text formatting processes text into a representation suitable for printing. Since a printer is really a computer, this representation is machine code for the printer. ASCII is one such code.

Six historically significant text formatting languages are surveyed: Runoff, Troff, TeX, Bravo, Scribe, and Postscript. The emphasis is on the text types available and the code generated. The main evolutionary forces are the changes in printers. Comparisons are made with programming languages.

Each of the six languages has ASCII as its …

Paleoenvironments Of The Eocene Green River Formation (Laney Member) In The Anvil Wash Area, Southwestern Wyoming, M. Elaine Graham-Kennedy Jun 1987

Paleoenvironments Of The Eocene Green River Formation (Laney Member) In The Anvil Wash Area, Southwestern Wyoming, M. Elaine Graham-Kennedy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study of abundant conchostracans in the Laney Member of the Green River Formation, Wyoming, has contributed to the resolution of the controversy over the depositional environment of finely laminated sediments. Conchostracans that typically live in ephemeral pools, pulmonate gastropods that require oxygenated water and freshwater ostracods indicate deposition of finely laminated sediments in a well oxygenated, shallow, freshwater lake. Mineralogical evidence indicating that Lake Gosiute was primarily fresh during deposition of the upper portion of the Laney Member includes predominance of calcite over dolomite and the clay composition of diagenetically altered tuffs. The minor amount of dolomite is detrital …

Social Traps And Environmental Policy, Robert Costanza

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

In recent years, scientific understanding and public awareness of environmental problems have increased tremendously. Yet our ability to manage these problems effectively has in too many cases gotten worse, not better. By studying real-world social traps and laboratory examples, we can learn effective escapes.

Simulation Of Normal Rb2Zncl4 Near The Incommensurate Transition, P. J. Edwardson, V. Katkanant, John R. Hardy, L. L. Boyer Jun 1987

Simulation Of Normal Rb2Zncl4 Near The Incommensurate Transition, P. J. Edwardson, V. Katkanant, John R. Hardy, L. L. Boyer

John R. Hardy Papers

The purposes of the reported computer simulation of the normal (high-temperature) phase of rubidium tetrachlorozincate are to understand the disordered structure in that phase and to investigate the possibility that the transition, upon cooling, from the normal phase to one with an incommensurate modulation is associated with a change from the disordered structure to an ordered one. The simulation of the dynamics of 168 ions in a periodic structure begins from a slight perturbation of a structure that is determined by minimization of the potential energy within the constraints of the experimentally determined average symmetry. Rigid ions with short-range interactions …

Implementation Of Case (Common Application Service Element) And Application Interface For Manufacturing Automation Protocol, Amit Limaye May 1987

Implementation Of Case (Common Application Service Element) And Application Interface For Manufacturing Automation Protocol, Amit Limaye

Theses

In 1980 General Motors formed a task force committee to explore solution to incompatibility of computer network on machine floor which control programmable devices, Robots etc. After receiving the various existing standards, the committee came up with first draft of Manufacturing & Automation Protocol (MAP 1.0) in April 1984. Further reviews resulted in different versions of MAP standards and presently, efforts are being made to come up with MAP 3.0.

MAP enables information to be readily transferred between computers, people and equipment and thus truely interconnecting open systems. The ultimate goal of these efforts is to be able to produce …

Analysis Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (Pah) In Stack Sample Particulates Formed During Waste Combustion ; Substituent Effects On The Strain Molecules, Ping Chiang Lyu

Theses

PART A: The total thirty samples came from wastes incineration of five industry companies in New Jersey have been examined. The EOM levels showed, especially for the less polar substances, lower than if they were collected at room temperature in the manner of ambient sampling. HPLC analyses of PAH, nitro-PAH and Quinone-PAH have been performed. Brief comparison is made with previous study.

PART B: Ab initio Molecular orbital calculations using the 3-21G basis set provide good approximations to the experimental geometries of substituted strained organic molecules. A series of disubstituted prismanes have been calculated at this level and the effects …

Upwind And Symmetric Shock- Capturing Schemes, H.C. Yee May 1987

Upwind And Symmetric Shock- Capturing Schemes, H.C. Yee

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

The development of numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws has been a rapidly growing area for the last ten years. Many of the fundamental concepts and state-of-the-art developments can only be found in meeting proceedings or internal reports. This review paper attempts to give an overview and a unified formulation of a class of shock-capturing methods. Special emphasis will be on the construction of the basic nonlinear scalar second-order schemes and the methods of extending these nonlinear scalar schemes to nonlinear systems via the exact Riemann solver, approximate Riemann solvers, and flux-vector splitting approaches. Generalization of these methods to efficiently …
