Definition Of The Concept Of ''Humane Treatment" In Relation To Food And Laboratory Animals, Bernard E. Rollin
Definition Of The Concept Of ''Humane Treatment" In Relation To Food And Laboratory Animals, Bernard E. Rollin
International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems
The very title of this talk makes a suggestion which must be forestalled, namely the idea that laboratory and food animals enjoy some exceptional moral status by virtue of the fact that we use them. In fact, it is extremely difficult to find any morally relevant grounds for distinguishing between food and laboratory animals and other animals and, far more dramatically, between animals and humans. The same conditions which require that we apply moral categories to humans rationally require that we apply them to animals as well. While it is obviously pragmatically impossible in our current sociocultural setting to expect …

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The word "politics" generally conjures up images of smokefilled, back rooms where unscrupulous men in shirt sleeves chew their cigars and make shady deals that serve partisan interests. But politics is neither inherently shady nor specific to back rooms. In fact, as long as society is differentiated along ethnic, sex and social class lines, politics pervades all of social life. You are involved in politics and so is your mother.

Justification, Discovery And The Naturalizing Of Epistemology, Harvey Siegel
Justification, Discovery And The Naturalizing Of Epistemology, Harvey Siegel
Philosophy Articles and Papers
Reichenbach's well-known distinction between the context of discovery and the context of justification has recently come under attack from several quarters. In this paper I attempt to reconsider the distinction and evaluate various recent criticisms of it. These criticisms fall into two main groups: those which directly challenge Reichenbach's distinction; and those which (I argue) indirectly but no less seriously challenge that distinction by rejecting the related distinction between psychology and epistemology, and defending the "naturalizing" of epistemology. I argue that these recent criticisms fail, and that the distinction remains an important conceptual tool necessary for an adequate understanding of …

Papers In Language And Literature Delivered At The 1979 Meeting Of The Association, John Boni
Papers In Language And Literature Delivered At The 1979 Meeting Of The Association, John Boni
Quidditas
The papers in language and literature covered, as might be expected, a broad range of interests: from Beowulf to Paradise Lost, from paleography to cultural change. The following is an attempt too summarize the content of each paper, staying as close as possible to the author's pattern of argument, and following the author's own words, directly or by paraphrase; the order here follows that of the program. Where only an abstract was available as a source of summary, this has been noted.

3. Sources And References For Suki, Matthew Lipman
Secondary School Curriculum
This sequential bibliography matches the 1978 edition of Suki page by page. It contains both sources—works that influenced Matthew Lipman in writing the novel, references to philosophical works he and Ann Margaret Sharp recommend to explore the novels’ philosophical themes, and brief commentary on them by Lipman.

5. Social Inquiry: Instructional Manual To Accompany 'Mark', Matthew Lipman, Ann Margaret Sharp
Secondary School Curriculum
The task of social studies as a discipline is to focus students’ already developed thinking skills upon the conceptual foundation of the social sciences. Students will think about these underlying concepts if they can talk about them, and they will talk about what they perceive as controversial or problematic. This, then, is what Mark and Social Inquiry aim to do: to identify selected root issues in the social sciences and expose to students the conflicting concepts at the heart of each issue.

An Examination Of Scholarly Perspective, Religiosity And Factors Which Lead To Religious Change, Paul Fehrmann
An Examination Of Scholarly Perspective, Religiosity And Factors Which Lead To Religious Change, Paul Fehrmann
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
As a replication and expansion of work done by Alsdurf (1977), the relations between religiosity, commitment to scholarly openness and reasons for religious change were examined through a survey of 146 students attending a South-central university. A discussion of logical and empirical studies was presented to help clarify the theses under examination, and it was maintained that this study was primarily concerned with empirical relationships. A negative correlation was obtained between scholarly openness and religiosity for the total population studied, but the correlation was weak. In contrast to expectations, a significant negative correlation between scholarly openness and religiosity was not …

Doctrine And Dramatic Dates Of Plato's Dialogues, Robert S. Brumbaugh

My purpose in this paper is to raise - without expecting to finally resolve - the question of the doctrinal significance of the several internal cross-references of Plato's dialogues, and particularly his indications of their proper sequence for the reader.

Aesthetics, Video Art And Television, Curtis L. Carter
Aesthetics, Video Art And Television, Curtis L. Carter
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
The author reviews two symposia: 'The Video Arts: Demonstration and Discussion', The American Society for Aesthetics, New York City, 28 Oct. 1978, and 'The Aestheticians Look at Television', National Association of Education Broadcasters, Washington, D.C., 30 Oct. 1978. He also presents an evaluation of the current state of video art in terms of philosophical aesthetics. Furthermore, he attempts to make a clear distinction between television and video art. The differences cited include corporate studio efforts vs efforts of individual artists, commercial vs artistic purpose and the substantial differences between production methods. Other issues considered are style, intimacy and narcissism.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
in this issue. . .
TWENTY YEARS AGO, Dudley T. Cornish launched The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought. Since that time, we have published nearly five hundred articles on art, biology, drama, economics, fiction, government, history, law, pedagogy, philosophy, poetry, politics, psychology, rhetoric, sociology, and even thermodynamics. Since 1960, MQ also has published poetry, at which a later issue will glance back. To the editors, "contemporary thought" never has meant primarily "thought on contemporary events," and our contributors have been concerned not only with the contemporary world but also with classicial antiquity and the Middle Ages; nevertheless, it …
The Socratic Problem: Some Second Thoughts, Eric A. Havelock
The Socratic Problem: Some Second Thoughts, Eric A. Havelock
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
In this paper, Havelock argues that the distinction between "early" "middle" and "late" dialogues makes little sense. All of the dialogues are Plato's construction; there is no reason to accept any of them as intended to be accurate representations of the historical Socrates. The Apology, often taken as a faithful representation of the historical Socrates, is rather a genre piece, in the tradition of Gorgias' Palamedes. Compare Isocrates' Antidosis. Havelock takes the movement from the orality of Socrates to the literacy of Plato as critical movement in the Athenian thought.

Philosophy And The Environmental Crisis: Foundation For A New Technological Paradigm, David M. Rice
Philosophy And The Environmental Crisis: Foundation For A New Technological Paradigm, David M. Rice
Senior Scholar Papers
This work is meant to provide an analysis of some of the basic philosophical considerations which will have to be made in order to effect the favorable resolution of an environmental crisis. I begin by defining what I mean by "environmental crisis" and what the evidence for the existence of such a crisis seems to be, though I draw no conclusions here. I examine also the concept of the "technological myth," that is, the belief that all human problems can be solved by increased technology alone. The main thesis of the work is the need for a new "technological paradigm." …

One of the more neglected chapters of Hegel's Phenomenology, which contains neither the obvious drama of the master and slave dialectic nor the deep enigmas of the final pages on absolute knowledge, carries the somewhat puzzling title Das geistige Tierrefrh und der Bertrug oder die Sache selbst. Of the major commentators on Hegel only Lukács has suggested its central place in the design of the whole: Kojéve and Lowenberg (following Royce) have suggested vivid readings of it as an analysis of the conflicts and jealousies of intellectual, artistic, and professional work. What follows is a series of remarks and variations …

Tom Robbins' Chink: A Posthumous Zarathustra, Charles Taylor
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This essay examines the ideas of one of the central characters in Tom Robbins’ 1977 novel, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues/ in relation to the thinking of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Zarathustra. It makes no argument for any influence of Nietzsche upon Robbins but rather considers similarities in thought as such.
