The Early Career Of James Mark Baldwin, 1881-1893 A Bibliography And An Introduction, Karin E. Wetmore
The Early Career Of James Mark Baldwin, 1881-1893 A Bibliography And An Introduction, Karin E. Wetmore
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will be an historical project dealing with the early career of James Mark Baldwin, a very important figure in the development of modern experimental psychology out of the older philosophical psychology in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The paper will focus on clarifying the specific details of Baldwin's early career and psychological work. This aim addresses the current need in the work of the history of psychology to establish an accurate picture of the historical events. This recovery and reconstruction of the historical data is pre-requisite to the more complete historical task. Gathering the raw historical …

Nietzsche's Graffito: A Reading Of The Antichrist, Gary Shapiro
Nietzsche's Graffito: A Reading Of The Antichrist, Gary Shapiro
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Even those writers who have good things to say about Nietzsche usually do not have good things to say abut his penultimate book, The Antichrist. Like Ecce Homo it is often described as at least prefiguring Nietzsche's madness if not (as is sometimes the case) said to be part of that desperate glide itself. Those inclined to reject the book may be encouraged in this view by Nietzsche's statement to Brandes, in November 1888, that The Antichrist is the whole of The Transvaluation of All Values (originally announced as a series of four books) and that Ecce Homo is its …

Agnosticism: Kant, W. David Beck
Agnosticism: Kant, W. David Beck
SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations
This chapter identifies the results of Kant's philosophical system on the contemporary discussion concerning an inerrant revelation. Knowledge, for Kant, is possible only as the forms and categories of the mind organize the raw data of the senses. Beyond this phenomenal world, the mind can only postulate what must or ought to be. It cannot know what is. The first postulate of this practical reasoning is freedom. The individual is autonomous, knows the good, and is capable of willing and doing as he ought.
Within such an epistemological framework, revelation becomes unnecessary, useless, and unverifiable. Inerrancy is not only false …

Vision And Experience In Machaut's Fonteinne Amoureuse, R. Barton Palmer
Vision And Experience In Machaut's Fonteinne Amoureuse, R. Barton Palmer
Quidditas
Guillaume de Machaut's narrative verse, much honored and imitated by his peers, has met with a generally indifferent reception from modern critics. There are, it seems to me, two reasons for this. First, Machaut's heavy indebtedness to Guillaume de Lorris has made inevitable a comparison between the two which leaves the imitator, though exploring the form for a different purpose, at a disadvantage. Unlike his model, Machaut does not infuse allegorical narrative with either a sharp reading of psychology or his own quite genuine joy in experience. Allegory is for him a two-dimensional device to serve a didactic end: the …
The Role Of Language In The Theory Of Communication Of Nicolas Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
The Role Of Language In The Theory Of Communication Of Nicolas Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
Nicolas Malebranche (1638–1715) is perhaps the most important French philosopher between Descartes and the Revolution of 1789. His synthesis of Cartesian elements and Augustinianism in the last quarter of the seventeenth century had great influence on several generations of thinkers before the rationalism he represented was replaced by the new Lockian sensualism. There has been a European revival of interest in Malebranche in the last twenty years, centering around the first critical edition of his complete works, a task headed by the Belgian historian of philosophy André Robinet, and there are signs that American interest is growing as well with …

Estrangement: Marx's Conception Of Human Nature And The Division Of Labor, Isidor Wallimann
Books
Estrangement: Marx's conception of human nature and the division of labor, examines the idea of estrangement in philosophy and the social sciences through an analysis of Marx's works. This book elucidates a functional meaning for the term estrangement and explores Marx's views on the division of labor and human nature.
Medieval Studies In America And American Medievalism, Herwig Wolfram
Medieval Studies In America And American Medievalism, Herwig Wolfram
Quidditas
As far as one can tell, Ernst Robert Curtius appears to have been the first Central European so fascinated by American interest in the Middle Ages that he promised a study on the subject. He called this particular interplay oof academic, amateur, and popular interest "American Medievalism." According to his bibliography, the projected work never appeared, but a lecture he was asked to present to an American audience in 1949 was published in both the North American and Hispano-American editions of his famous book European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages.
Catharsis In Aristotle, The Renaissance, And Elsewhere, Thomas Clayton
Catharsis In Aristotle, The Renaissance, And Elsewhere, Thomas Clayton
Quidditas
In an essay on "Shakespeare and the Kinds of Drama," Stephen Orgel presents an appealing and sympathetic view of Renaissance dramatic-generic theory and practice as original, capacious, and flexible, concluding that, "like Scaliger, Shakespeare thought of genres not as sets of rules but as sets of expectations and possibilities." In relation to this finding, we should perhaps be content to be "unclear about tragic catharsis," because "at least we know it is there, convincing us that tragedy works—even if we do not know how or on whom" (p.120). As the Renaissance read Aristotle, "tragedy achieved its end by purging …
Justified Belief And The Infinite Regress Argument, John N. Williams
Justified Belief And The Infinite Regress Argument, John N. Williams
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The background to this paper is the question of how rational belief is possible in the light of the commonly presented infinite regress in reasons. The paper investigates the neglected question of whether this regress is vicious. I argue that given the genuine requirements of rational belief, the regress would require the rational believer to hold an infinity of beliefs, which is impossible. The regress would not entail the rational believer holding an infinitely complex belief, which, admittedly, would be logically impossible.

Authority And Consent, Joseph Raz
Authority And Consent, Joseph Raz
Faculty Scholarship
My starting point is the assumption that there is no general obligation to obey the law, not even a prima facie obligation and not even in a just society. This assumption is perhaps becoming more popular. In recent years it has been defended by several writers. There is more that needs to be said in its support, but I will not attempt to do so here. Instead, I will reflect on a problem posed by accepting it, a problem concerning the relations between an individual citizen and the state. It is common to think that the state has authority over …
Did Aristotle 'Develop'? Reflections On Werner Jaeger's Thesis, David R. Lachterman
Did Aristotle 'Develop'? Reflections On Werner Jaeger's Thesis, David R. Lachterman
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Jaeger was combating the previous monolithic interpretation of Aristotle with an organic model of psychological growth. Disproving details in Jaeger's account do not ultimately demonstrate that Aristotle did not develop in some way, or present his ideas in different ways in different places. (Preus)

Socrates And Hedonism: Protagoras 351b-358d, Donald J. Zeyl
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
The weight of the evidence is heavily in favor of the antihedonist reading of the Protagoras. It is thoroughly compatible with the text of the Protagoras; it is intelligible in the light of a plausible account of Socrates' aims; and it can meet objections to it, whereas the prohedonist account creates more problems than it solves.
History And Development Of Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, Pierre A. Chaloux, Max B. Heppner
History And Development Of Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, Pierre A. Chaloux, Max B. Heppner
International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems
In recent years, Congress has passed a number of laws that direct various government agencies to safeguard animal welfare. Our own agency has been involved principally in enforcing the Animal Welfare Act and the Horse Protection Act, and therefore we will limit this discussion to these two laws.
The Animal Welfare Act was passed in 1966 and amended in 1970 and 1976. The Act uses a system of licensing and registration to regulate a number of non-farm businesses and organizations. These groups are required to provide humane care and treatment to regulated animals, which include hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, …
