Fiona’S Bee (1975) By Beverly Keller, Gareth B. Matthews Jan 1995

Fiona’S Bee (1975) By Beverly Keller, Gareth B. Matthews

Chapter Books

Young Fiona saves her money to buy a dog dish, which she puts on her front porch and fills with water every day, hoping to make friends with a dog who might stop by for a drink, and with its human walker. But when a bee lands in the water and nearly drowns, Fiona's rescue results in her making a whole group of new friends in an unexpected way. Beverly Keller's delightfully offbeat story nudges us to think about what kind of respect we owe to creatures like bees, what kinds of animals can be pets, and what the limits …

ucian Humanism" in 1989, the objective of which was "to explore Confucian ethics as a common intellectual discourse in East Asia from a multidisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective" (p. vii), this volume offers a summary of the three-day event. If one were looking for "essays" on Confucian ethics, one would not find them here. With one exception where a participant sent in a written clarification, the report is based on recordings of the wide-ranging discussions that transpired at the workshop. What one will find are serious and often provocative reflections on a complex phenomenon by a group of eminent scholars from …

The Parts Of Definitions, Unity, And Sameness In Aristotle's Metaphysics, Mark R. Wheeler Dec 1994

The Parts Of Definitions, Unity, And Sameness In Aristotle's Metaphysics, Mark R. Wheeler

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

First principles (ἀρχάι) are crucial to Aristotle's conception of scientific knowledge (επιστήμη). In the Posterior Analytics, Aristotle teaches us that all scientific knowledge is either knowledge arrived at through demonstration from first principles or knowledge of the first principles themselves. The first principles of a given science are the primary premises (τὰ πρώτα) of that science (Pst. An., 72a7); they express the essential characteristics of the substance about which the given science is concerned; and all other scientific knowledge is derived from the first principles through syllogistic inference.

The first principles of the various sciences are expressed through definition (ὁρισμός). …

Being According To Aristotle's Metaphysics Delta, Richard Bodeus Dec 1994

Being According To Aristotle's Metaphysics Delta, Richard Bodeus

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

In ordinary language, what is said 'being' is so-called in several different ways. In his attempt to clarify this important point, Aristotle introduces distinctions that are not as easily grasped as one might at first believe. Commentators are particular troubled by what 'being per se' means, especially in relation to the 'categories'. Some of them are also surprised to see that Aristotle leaves no room for what one might call 'existential being.' And other aspects of Aristotle's account raise additional problems. I hope to contribute to a more successful understanding of Aristotle's general aim in this text.

The Many Ways Of Justice, Seamus Murphy S.J. Mar 1994

The Many Ways Of Justice, Seamus Murphy S.J.

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Much of my background lies in social ministry, but after ordination the provincial decreed that I was to work in philosophy also. It seemed an odd mix at the time: philosophers tend to be squeamish about the rough-and-tumble of social action, while some social activists give the impression that garlic should be worn to ward off the anemia-inducing influence of philosophers. The combination has given a certain Janus-like quality to my life; but it has worked, and I have felt no need to look back.

Justice is the theme of my essay. Many of those in ministries such as education …

Language And Materialism, Christina Crosby Mar 1994

Language And Materialism, Christina Crosby

Cardozo Law Review

A report issued by the United Nations recently predicted that "[i]t will take nearly 1,000 years for women to gain the same economic and political clout as men if current trends continue." Indeed, when one reflects on the wrongs done worldwide to women-the silent violence of exploitation and indifference, the pervasive violence of disgust and contempt, the brutal violence of murder and mutilationone wonders, first, whether even a millennium will bring "equal representation in 'the higher echelons of political and economic power,' and second, whether anything would really be changed if women one day come to exercise the same "clout" …

The Patrilineal Discourse Of Enlightenment: Reading Foucault Reading Kant, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio Jan 1994

The Patrilineal Discourse Of Enlightenment: Reading Foucault Reading Kant, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

The English translation of Foucault's unpublished French manuscript addressing Kant's statement on enlightenment appeared in 1984, 200 years after the publication of Kant's essay. Foucault meant to entitle his essay as Kant did, but instead he gave it the interested and partially correspondent title What is Enlightenment? This is only a partial correspondence, because the full title of Kant's essay is Beantwortung der Frage: Was ist Aufklärung? Foucault's title suppresses the fact that Kant's essay is not framed as a question, but as a definitive answer. This is present in the perfectiveness of the initial substantive; it is not an …

(1994) The Five Communities, David K. Kennedy Jan 1994

(1994) The Five Communities, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

Those of us who have experienced the joy and terror of the intensive formation of a philosophical community of inquiry (COI) over an extended period, understand intuitively that it is a process of development which has certain characteristic structures and patterns. These can be glossed in a number of ways, all of which will be metaphors, if only because any given moment in the life of the COI is an instant of vertiginous freedom. The five structural dimensions of the COI which I am identifying are gesture, language, mind, love, and interest. I want to call them "communities" because each …

Some Consequences Of Semantic Externalism, Consuelo Preti Jan 1994

Some Consequences Of Semantic Externalism, Consuelo Preti

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Semantic externalism is the view that meaning and mental content are determined by relations to the world of objects and properties outside the physical boundaries of the subject of mental states. What you mean by your words–what you're thinking when you're thinking about something–is essentially constituted by the world at large. It has become customary to formulate externalism in terms of so-called twin earth cases–cases where (some kinds of) content do not supervene on inner states, but this formulation can be shown to be too limited to be of any great use in characterizing a theory of mind. A more …

Kant On Obligation And Motivation In Law And Ethics, Nelson T. Potter Jr. Jan 1994

Kant On Obligation And Motivation In Law And Ethics, Nelson T. Potter Jr.

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

It is quite clear that a positive law must have some motivation connected with it, as specified in a penalty, at least a criminal law must, as opposed to a law appropriating funds or a law authorizing persons to make use of certain legal possibilities, such as a will, a limited liability corporation, or marriage. Some ten years ago Nebraska's state legislature passed a law requiring the wearing of a motorcycle helmet while riding a motorcycle on the state's roads, and the Governor signed it into law. Only some time after this process had been completed was the defect of …

The Place Of Religious Argument In A Free And Democratic Society, Robert Audi Nov 1993

The Place Of Religious Argument In A Free And Democratic Society, Robert Audi

San Diego Law Review

This Article provides an account of the notion of a religious argument, distinguishes several roles of religious arguments in a liberal democracy, and defends a set of principles for their proper use in such a society. The author argues that it is appropriate that citizens apply a kind of separation of church and state in their public use of religious arguments, especially in advocating laws or public policies that restrict liberty. More specifically, the author contends that whatever religious arguments one may have in such cases, one should also be willing to offer, and be to a certain extent motivated …
