The Philosophy Of Sri Ramana Maharshi, David Benjamin White Jan 1960

The Philosophy Of Sri Ramana Maharshi, David Benjamin White

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was threefold (1) to derive the philosophy of the contemporary Indian sage who was known for the greater part of his life as Sri Ramana Maharshi; (2) to present this philosophy in English an accurately as possible; and (3) to explain it as clearly as possible in terms understandable to those not familiar with the Indian philosophical tradition.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

Even before Vice President Richard M. Nixon had announced his mission to Russia, the editors of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY had been fortunate in securing the manuscript of the lead article in this issue. With interest in the U.S. S. R. as high as it currently is, this rather charming autobiographical report of the life and hard times of a Russian peasant seems extremely appropriate for publication. In plain, unvarnished language it gives a painfully detailed picture of the grim problems its author encountered as his country passed from revolution to world war and into the …

Plato's Hypothesis And The Upward Path, Thomas G. Rosenmeyer Nov 1958

Plato's Hypothesis And The Upward Path, Thomas G. Rosenmeyer

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

In this paper I shall attempt to show that Aristotle's logical terminology, ontologically conditioned or determined as it obviously is, contrasts with that of Plato, who, on the whole, with perhaps one exception, was very careful not to introduce unwarranted ontological perspectives into matters of logic.

Xxii. Philosophical Meaning, Robert L. Bloom, Basil L. Crapster, Harold L. Dunkelberger, Charles H. Glatfelter, Richard T. Mara, Norman E. Richardson, W. Richard Schubart Jan 1958

Xxii. Philosophical Meaning, Robert L. Bloom, Basil L. Crapster, Harold L. Dunkelberger, Charles H. Glatfelter, Richard T. Mara, Norman E. Richardson, W. Richard Schubart

Section XXII: Philosophical Meaning

As we have seen, philosophy was one of the major contributions of Greek Civilization. It was the Greeks who gave it its first major impetus as well as its name, "the love of learning." This very phrase embodies the most important aspects of their contribution to the West: the love of the best or most excellent; the search for something beyond a description of immediate experience; and the attempt to grasp, in some comprehensive fashion, both the actual and the ideal, both the given and the possible. In order to accomplish this task philosophy has, as we have seen, traditionally …

1. The Logical Atomism Of Bertrand Russell, Robert L. Bloom, Basil L. Crapster, Harold L. Dunkelberger, Charles H. Glatfelter, Richard T. Mara, Norman E. Richardson, W. Richard Schubart

Section XXII: Philosophical Meaning

As can easily be seen, the impact of these three schools of contemporary philosophy — the linguistic, the logical analytical, and the logical empiricist — has been largely negative, critical, and destructive, especially with regard to theological beliefs, metaphysical systems, and value judgment. Thus the particular growing edges of contemporary philosophy have contributed their full share to the shaking of the foundations of Western Civilization. But, during the last few decades they have presented less of a united front than before. The differences which have appeared have come largely from a rethinking of the status and role of value, and …

Conceptions Of Formative Processes In Western Science And Eastern Philosophy, Glenn E. Kaufmann Jan 1958

Conceptions Of Formative Processes In Western Science And Eastern Philosophy, Glenn E. Kaufmann

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The central theme of this paper concerns the way Eastern and Western (sometimes termed Oriental and Occidental) thought view the formation of the world; the means of arriving at these conclusions and the concepts or pre-conceived ideas upon which they are based. Western thought has been limited to views that have developed out of modern science, post-1500; they are mechanistic science, evolution, Whitehead's philosophy pertaining to God and modern physics. For the purpose of this paper, the emphasis in Eastern thought is placed on Mahayana Buddhism, especially the Madhyamika school of philosophy. In India it developed in contact with many …

Metaphysic And Distorted Analogies, Pierre Grimes Jan 1955

Metaphysic And Distorted Analogies, Pierre Grimes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A philosophical analysis of the thesis of the metaphysic of the non-dual that "the world we are confronted with is nothing but words, words, words" is a difficult one upon which to embark. The difficulty does not lie in assuming this argument, but in examining it from the opponent's position. It is equivalent to an evaluation of the New York Giants in Brooklyn. If we assume the thesis of the metaphysic of the non-dual, finding the proper arguments and quotations to substantiate its claims, all that we would be doing is claiming a victory for "our side” when, indeed, no …

Logics: Subverbal, Verbal, And Superverbal: An Approach To Evolutionary Psychology, Selden Smyser Jan 1938

Logics: Subverbal, Verbal, And Superverbal: An Approach To Evolutionary Psychology, Selden Smyser

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Let us attempt in thirty minutes to trace the million-year history of man's blundering yet ever more successful efforts to learn to think, to solve problems, to cooperate, construct and create. If we can trace the important steps by which the man-animal has become man and has developed thought patterns for the discovery of the truth he needs to guide his action and to solve his problems, we shall in so doing indicate the essential nature of a phylogenetic psycho-logic of importance for a fundamental science of education, i.e. a science of the evolution of human intelligence.

Philosophical Mysticism As Epistemological Method, Glenn Negley Jan 1934

Philosophical Mysticism As Epistemological Method, Glenn Negley

Graduate Thesis Collection

The general problem of the definition of mysticism may be approached in either of two ways.  We might assemble the elements of all types and method of mysticism, and, by the use of the critical method, arrive thereby at a description and definition of the mystical experience in its most general sense; or we might develop a restricted, specific definition by ignoring certain aspects of that type of experience which might, in a broad, general sense, be called mystical.

Mission San Juan Bautista California: The Causes And Effects Of Its Rise And Decline, John E. Martin Apr 1933

Mission San Juan Bautista California: The Causes And Effects Of Its Rise And Decline, John E. Martin

Philosophy Doctoral

The immutable law of Cause and Effect affords an interesting gauge for the study of one of California's renowned missions. To compile all of the available data concerning a particular mission, to examine its buildings and grounds minutely and then to seek the Why and the Wherefore, provides an instructive undertaking.

Mission San Juan Bautista, California, the largest of the mission edifices, is a splendid subject for such a study. Why was it built, what was the purpose of its strange closed-off side aisles, why did it decline, what were the results achieved in its history? These are questions which …

(2000) Discovering Our Voice: A Manual To Accompany 'Geraldo', Ann Margaret Sharp, Laurance J. Splitter Dec 199

(2000) Discovering Our Voice: A Manual To Accompany 'Geraldo', Ann Margaret Sharp, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

Geraldo is a story about what an immigrant undergoes when he leaves one culture and tries to 'join' another culture. An immigrant suffers a triple disruption: he loses his sense of place, he enters into an alien language, and he finds himself surrounded by beings whose social behavior, norms and traditions are very unlike, and sometimes even offensive to his own. The explanation of the leading ideas in this manual help students and teachers explore the philosophical themes in Geraldo. The discussion plans, exercises, and activities are designed to foster and cultivate the process of philosophical dialogue in the classroom. …
